In this paper the authors discuss their experiences with ungrading at a small public university in the U.S. as well as a large public university in Germany. The courses described are Calculus 1, Mathematics for Liberal Arts, and courses for pre-service secondary teachers of mathematics. We outline and compare our approaches, discuss student performance and feedback and present some interesting patterns relating to gender. The famous 1960s Lumer-Phillips Theorem states that a closed and densely defined operator $A\colon D(A)\subseteq X\rightarrow X$ on a Banach space $X$ generates a strongly continuous contraction semigroup if and only if $(A,D(A))$ is dissipative and the range of $\lambda-A$ is surjective in $X$ for some $\lambda>0$. In this paper, we establish a version of this result for bi-continuous semigroups and apply the latter amongst other examples to the transport equation as well as to flows on infinite networks., Comment: 12 pages, correction of Example 3.9

We establish that the category of Silva spaces, aka LS-spaces, formed by countable inductive limits of Banach spaces with compact linking maps as objects and linear and continuous maps as morphisms, is not an integral category. The result carries over to the category of PLS-spaces, i.e., countable projective limits of LS-spaces -- which contains prominent spaces of analysis such as the space of distributions and the space of real analytic functions. As a consequence, we obtain that both categories neither have enough projective nor enough injective objects. All results hold true when 'compact' is replaced by 'weakly compact' or 'nuclear'. This leads to the categories of PLS-, PLS$_{\text{w}}$- and PLN-spaces, which are examples of 'inflation exact categories with admissible cokernels' as recently introduced by Henrard, Kvamme, van Roosmalen and the second-named author., Comment: 5 pages

Quasi-abelian categories are abundant in functional analysis and representation theory. It is known that a quasi-abelian category $\mathcal{E}$ is a cotilting torsionfree class of an abelian category. In fact, this property characterizes quasi-abelian categories. This ambient abelian category is derived equivalent to the category $\mathcal{E}$, and can be constructed as the heart $\mathcal{LH}(\mathcal{E})$ of a $\operatorname{t}$-structure on the bounded derived category $\operatorname{D^b}(\mathcal{E})$ or as the localization of the category of monomorphisms in $\mathcal{E}.$ However, there are natural examples of categories in functional analysis which are not quasi-abelian, but merely one-sided quasi-abelian or even weaker. Examples are the category of $\operatorname{LB}$-spaces or the category of complete Hausdorff locally convex spaces. In this paper, we consider additive regular categories as a generalization of quasi-abelian categories that covers the aforementioned examples. Additive regular categories can be characterized as those subcategories of abelian categories which are closed under subobjects. As for quasi-abelian categories, we show that such an ambient abelian category of an additive regular category $\mathcal{E}$ can be found as the heart of a $\operatorname{t}$-structure on the bounded derived category $\operatorname{D^b}(\mathcal{E})$, or as the localization of the category of monomorphisms of $\mathcal{E}$. In our proof of this last construction, we formulate and prove a version of Auslander's formula for additive regular categories. Whereas a quasi-abelian category is an exact category in a natural way, an additive regular category has a natural one-sided exact structure. Such a one-sided exact category can be 2-universally embedded into its exact hull. We show that the exact hull of an additive regular category is again an additive regular category.

These are lecture notes based on the first part of a course on 'Mathematical Data Science', which I taught to final year BSc students in the UK in 2019-2020. Integral categories form a sub-class of pre-abelian categories whose systematic study was initiated by Rump in 2001. In the first part of this article we determine whether several categories of topological and bornological vector spaces are integral. Moreover, we establish that the class of integral categories is not contained in the class of quasi-abelian categories, and that there exist semi-abelian categories that are neither integral nor quasi-abelian. In the last part of the article we show that a category is quasi-abelian if and only if it has admissible intersections, in the sense considered recently by Br{\"u}stle, Hassoun and Tattar. In this article we study port-Hamiltonian partial differential equations on certain one-dimensional manifolds. We classify those boundary conditions that give rise to contraction semigroups. As an application we study port-Hamiltonian operators on networks whose edges can have finite or infinite length. In particular, we discuss possibly infinite networks in which the edge lengths can accumulate zero and port-Hamiltonian operators with Hamiltonians that neither are bounded nor bounded away from zero. We achieve this, by first providing a new description for maximal dissipative extensions of skew-symmetric operators. The main technical tool used for this is the notion of boundary systems. The latter generalizes the classical notion of boundary triple(t)s and allows to treat skew-symmetric operators with unequal deficiency indices. In order to deal with fairly general variable coefficients, we develop a theory of possibly unbounded, non-negative, injective weights on an abstract Hilbert space., Comment: 34 pages; 4 figures

In this article we study a class of hyperbolic partial differential equations of order one on the semi-axis. The so-called port-Hamiltonian systems cover for instance the wave equation and the transport equation, but also networks of the aforementioned equations fit into this framework. Our main results firstly characterize the boundary conditions which turn the corresponding linear operator into the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup. Secondly, we equip the equation with inputs (control) and outputs (observation) at the boundary and prove that this leads to a well-posed boundary control system. We illustrate our results via an example of coupled transport equations on a network, that allows to model transport from and to infinity. Moreover, we study a vibrating string of infinite length with one endpoint. Here, we show that our results allow to treat cases where the physical constants of the string tend to zero at infinity., Comment: 26 pages
