Abstract

Citizen science (CS) can foster transformative impact for science, citizen empowerment and socio-political processes. To unleash this impact, a clearer understanding of its current status and challenges for its development is needed. Using quantitative indicators developed in a collaborative stakeholder process, our study provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of CS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Our online survey with 340 responses focused on CS impact through (1) scientific practices, (2) participant learning and empowerment, and (3) socio-political processes. With regard to scientific impact, we found that data quality control is an established component of CS practice, while publication of CS data and results has not yet been achieved by all project coordinators (55%). Key benefits for citizen scientists were the experience of collective impact (“making a difference together with others”) as well as gaining new knowledge. For the citizen scientists’ learning outcomes, different forms of social learning, such as systematic feedback or personal mentoring, were essential. While the majority of respondents attributed an important value to CS for decision-making, only few were confident that CS data were indeed utilized as evidence by decision-makers. Based on these results, we recommend (1) that project coordinators and researchers strengthen scientific impact by fostering data management and publications, (2) that project coordinators and citizen scientists enhance participant impact by promoting social learning opportunities and (3) that project initiators and CS networks foster socio-political impact through early engagement with decision-makers and alignment with ongoing policy processes. In this way, CS can evolve its transformative impact.

Abstract

The introduction of fuel cell technology into the field of motor vehicle propulsionenables both a reduction in primary energy consumption and a reduction independence on the primary energy source mineral oil. A major advantage of thispropulsion technology is reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when renewableenergy is used for fuels as hydrogen [Robinius, 2019]. Moreover, fluctuations inelectricity energy supply from renewable sources can be dampened when electricityis efficiently converted and stored as hydrogen.For the competitive application of this technology of fuel cell technology in the field ofvehicle propulsion, however, considerable research is still required in some areas. Inaddition to the necessary cost and weight reduction, this also applies to the long-termstability and robustness of fuel cell stack itself.It is known that fuel cell stacks react to the admixture of harmful gases into the intakecathode air with performance losses, which primarily result from the poisoning of thecatalysts. The effect does not only depend on the total burden of pollutants but on theirpeak concentrations. With this regard there is a need for research into both the effectsof pollutants on fuel stacks and their distribution in the atmosphere.The work presented here was funded by BMWi in the period from December 2014 toNovember 2017 and describes the results of the subproject 03ET6036D, which wascarried out by Forschungszentrum Jülich

Abstract

The aim of the BMBF project "Stadtklima im Wandel" is the development, validationand application of a high-resolution urban climate model for entire cities. Theresearch tasks assigned to Module-B consist of processing existing observation dataand developing measurement strategies for new measurements. For this purpose,long-term observations as well as intensive measurement campaigns were carriedout with a high-precision and high-resolution instrumentation, which not only allows amodel evaluation of PALM-4U, but can also be used directly for applications such asair-quality control. Especially for the determination of spatial distributions of relevanttrace substances, a newly equipped mobile measuring laboratory was used insubproject 6 (TP6) in Module-B. With this task, time-resolved measurements ofseveral atmospheric trace gases including NO, NO$_{2}$ O$_{3}$, CO, CO$_{2}$ and NH$_{3}$, acomprehensive characterization of the particle phase (size and number distribution)as well as radiation measurements were performed in all four intensive measurementcampaigns in Berlin and Stuttgart

Abstract

Hydroxyl (OH) radical reactivity (kOH) has been measured for 18 years with different measurement techniques. In order to compare the performances of instruments deployed in the field, two campaigns were conducted performing experiments in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR at Forschungszentrum Jülich in October 2015 and April 2016. Chemical conditions were chosen either to be representative of the atmosphere or to test potential limitations of instruments. All types of instruments that are currently used for atmospheric measurements were used in one of the two campaigns. The results of these campaigns demonstrate that OH reactivity can be accurately measured for a wide range of atmospherically relevant chemical conditions (e.g. water vapour, nitrogen oxides, various organic compounds) by all instruments. The precision of the measurements (limit of detection −1 at a time resolution of 30 s to a few minutes) is higher for instruments directly detecting hydroxyl radicals, whereas the indirect comparative reactivity method (CRM) has a higher limit of detection of 2 s−1 at a time resolution of 10 to 15 min. The performances of the instruments were systematically tested by stepwise increasing, for example, the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), water vapour or nitric oxide (NO). In further experiments, mixtures of organic reactants were injected into the chamber to simulate urban and forested environments. Overall, the results show that the instruments are capable of measuring OH reactivity in the presence of CO, alkanes, alkenes and aromatic compounds. The transmission efficiency in Teflon inlet lines could have introduced systematic errors in measurements for low-volatile organic compounds in some instruments. CRM instruments exhibited a larger scatter in the data compared to the other instruments. The largest differences to reference measurements or to calculated reactivity were observed by CRM instruments in the presence of terpenes and oxygenated organic compounds (mixing ratio of OH reactants were up to 10 ppbv). In some of these experiments, only a small fraction of the reactivity is detected. The accuracy of CRM measurements is most likely limited by the corrections that need to be applied to account for known effects of, for example, deviations from pseudo first-order conditions, nitrogen oxides or water vapour on the measurement. Methods used to derive these corrections vary among the different CRM instruments. Abstract

Over the last years, there has been an increased interest in the combined use of natural language processing techniques and machine learning algorithms to automatically classify texts on the basis of wide range of features. One class of features that have been successfully employed for a wide range of classification tasks, including native language identification, readability assessment and text genre categorization pertain to the construct of ‘linguistic complexity’. This paper presents a novel approach to the use of linguistic complexity features in text categorization: Rather than representing text complexity ‘globally’ in terms of summary statistics, this approach assesses text complexity ‘locally’ and captures the progression of complexity within a text as a sequence of complexity scores, generating what is referred to here as ‘complexity contours’. We demonstrate the utility of the approach in an automatic text classification task for five genres – academic, newspaper, fiction, magazine and spoken – of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) [Davies, 2008] using a recurrent neural network.
