The full three-year WMAP results (WMAP3) reinforce the absence of large-angle correlations at scales greater than 60 degrees. The Poincare dodecahedral space (PDS) model model, which may naturally explain such features, thus remains a plausible cosmological model, despite recent controversy about whether matched circle searches would or would not push the topology beyond the horizon. Here, we have used new eigenmode calculations of the dodecahedral space to predict the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations in such models, with an improved angular resolution. We have simulated CMB maps and confirmed the expected presence of matching circles. For a set of plausible cosmological parameters, we have derived the angular power spectrum of the CMB up to large wavenumbers. Coarse-grained modeling of dynamics on vicinal surfaces concentrates on the diffusion of adatoms on terraces with boundary conditions at sharp steps, as first studied by Burton, Cabrera and Frank (BCF). Recent electromigration experiments on vicinal Si surfaces suggest the need for more general boundary conditions in a BCF approach. We study a discrete 1D hopping model that takes into account asymmetry in the hopping rates in the region around a step and the finite probability of incorporation into the solid at the step site. By expanding the continuous concentration field in a Taylor series evaluated at discrete sites near the step, we relate the kinetic coefficients and permeability rate in general sharp step models to the physically suggestive parameters of the hopping models. In particular we find that both the kinetic coefficients and permeability rate can be negative when diffusion is faster near the step than on terraces. These ideas are used to provide an understanding of recent electromigration experiment on Si(001) surfaces where step bunching is induced by an electric field directed at various angles to the steps., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We study current-induced step bunching and wandering instabilities with subsequent pattern formations on vicinal surfaces. A novel two-region diffusion model is developed, where we assume that there are different diffusion rates on terraces and in a small region around a step, generally arising from local differences in surface reconstruction. We determine the steady state solutions for a uniform train of straight steps, from which step bunching and in-phase wandering instabilities are deduced. The physically suggestive parameters of the two-region model are then mapped to the effective parameters in the usual sharp step models. Interestingly, a negative kinetic coefficient results when the diffusion in the step region is faster than on terraces. A consistent physical picture of current-induced instabilities on Si(111) is suggested based on the results of linear stability analysis. In this picture the step wandering instability is driven by step edge diffusion and is not of the Mullins-Sekerka type. Step bunching and wandering patterns at longer times are determined numerically by solving a set of coupled equations relating the velocity of a step to local properties of the step and its neighbors. We use a geometric representation of the step to derive a nonlinear evolution equation describing step wandering, which can explain experimental results where the peaks of the wandering steps align with the direction of the driving field., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Under constant applied force, the separation of double-stranded DNA into two single strands is known to proceed through a series of pauses and jumps. Given experimental traces of constant-force unzipping, we present a method whereby the locations of pause points can be extracted in the form of a pause point spectrum. A simple theoretical model of DNA constant-force unzipping is demonstrated to produce good agreement with the experimental pause point spectrum of lambda phage DNA. The locations of peaks in the experimental and theoretical pause point spectra are found to be nearly coincident below 6000 bp. The model only requires the sequence, temperature and a set of empirical base pair binding and stacking energy parameters, and the good agreement with experiment suggests that pause points are primarily determined by the DNA sequence. The model is also used to predict pause point spectra for the BacterioPhage PhiX174 genome. The algorithm for extracting the pause point spectrum might also be useful for studying related systems which exhibit pausing behavior such as molecular motors., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We separate double stranded lambda phage DNA by applying a fixed force at a constant temperature ranging from 15C to 50C, and measure the minimum force required to separate the two strands, providing the first experimental determination of the phase boundary between single stranded DNA and double stranded DNA in the temperature- force plane. The measurements also offer information on the free energy of dsDNA at temperatures where dsDNA does not thermally denature in the absence of force. While parts of the phase diagram can be explained using existing models and free energy parameters, others deviate significantly. Cosmology's standard model posits an infinite flat universe forever expanding under the pressure of dark energy. First-year data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) confirm this model to spectacular precision on all but the largest scales (Bennett {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Spergel {\it et al.}, 2003). Temperature correlations across the microwave sky match expectations on scales narrower than $60^{\circ}$, yet vanish on scales wider than $60^{\circ}$. Researchers are now seeking an explanation of the missing wide-angle correlations (Contaldi {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Cline {\it et al.}, 2003). One natural approach questions the underlying geometry of space, namely its curvature (Efstathiou, 2003) and its topology (Tegmark {\it et al.}, 2003). In an infinite flat space, waves from the big bang would fill the universe on all length scales. The observed lack of temperature correlations on scales beyond $60^{\circ}$ means the broadest waves are missing, perhaps because space itself is not big enough to support them. Here we present a simple geometrical model of a finite, positively curved space -- the Poincar\'e dodecahedral space -- which accounts for WMAP's observations with no fine-tuning required. Circle searching (Cornish, Spergel and Starkman, 1998) may confirm the model's topological predictions, while upcoming Planck Surveyor data may confirm its predicted density of $\Omega_0 \simeq 1.013 > 1$. If confirmed, the model will answer the ancient question of whether space is finite or infinite, while retaining the standard Friedmann-Lema\^\i{}tre foundation for local physics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.
