Photojournalist Weegee, born Usher Fellig in what is now Ukraine in 1899, liked to be known as Weegee the Famous, but his fame has increased since his death from a brain tumour in 1968. Weegee, who had moved to New York, NY, with his family in 1910, was known for photographing scenes of crime and horror. He estimated in 1946 that he had photographed around 5,000 murders in five years. However Weegee's fame derives from the legend of his life, romanticized in the 1992 film 'Public Eye.' Weegee had a sixth sense for crime and worked at night, mostly in the rundown area of New York in which he had grown up.
