Abstract

The color X-ray camera (SLcam) is a full-field single photon imager. As stand-alone camera, it is applicable for energy and space-resolved X-ray detection measurements. The exchangeable poly-capillary optics in front of a beryllium entrance window conducts X-ray photons from the probe to distinguished energy dispersive pixels on a pnCCD. The dedicated software enables the acquisition and the online processing of the spectral data for all 69696 pixels, leading to a real-time visualization of the element distribution in a sample. No scanning system is employed. A first elemental composition image of the sample is visible within minutes while statistics is improving in the course of time. Straight poly-capillary optics allows for 1:1 imaging with a space resolution of 50 um and no limited depth of sharpness, ideal to map uneven objects. Using conically shaped optics, a magnification of 6 times was achieved with a space resolution of 10 um. Abstract

This paper describes an innovative X-ray fluorescence spectrometer designed to achieve high-energy resolution, position resolution, and detection rate in elemental mapping applications. The spectrometer is based on a ring-shaped monolithic array of silicon drift detectors (SDDs) with a hole cut in its center. A coaxial X-ray excitation beam is transported to the sample through this hole. In this way, the solid angle for the collection of the X-ray fluorescence is optimized. Moreover, the X-ray beam is collimated on the sample using capillary optics in order to obtain high photon density in a small excitation spot. Detector, optics, and generator are assembled in a compact vacuum tightened unit. The structure of the proposed spectrometer and the first experimental results of its characterization are presented. Abstract

In a color X-ray camera spatial resolution is achieved by means of a polycapillary optic conducting X-ray photons from small regions on a sample to distinct energy dispersive pixels on a CCD matrix. At present, the resolution limit of color X-ray camera systems can go down to several microns and is mainly restricted by pixel dimensions. The recent development of an efficient subpixel resolution algorithm allows a release from pixel size, limiting the resolution only to the quality of the optics. In this work polycapillary properties that influence the spatial resolution are systematized and assessed both theoretically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that with the current technological level reaching one micron resolution is challenging, but possible.

Abstract

SLcam® – a full-field energy dispersive portable X-ray camera [1,2], is a combination of a single photon counting CCD with a poly capillary optics objective. The standard CCD matrix consist of 48×48 μm2 pixels sensitive for photons from 3 to 18 keV and has an energy resolution of 156 eV (@Mn Kα). The polycapillary optics is used to achieve the spatial resolution guiding the fluorescence photons from the point of origin to the detection pixel. The device allows fast overview over a large detection area with first results visible almost immediately. A dedicated software enables steering the camera and online visualization of the hyper spectral data cube (x,y,E) by displaying regional spectra, element/line maps and overlay images. With the use of a sub-pixel resolution algorithm the SLcam® spatial resolution becomes limited by the end diameter of a single capillary channel. A one to one optics, with a field of view of 12 × 12 mm2, can reach a resolution of 20 μm. This optics has an unlimited depth of sharpness and is ideal to visualize uneven objects. With the use of a conical shaped optics allowing 8 times magnification and a field of view of 1.5 × 1.5 mm2 a resolution approaching 1 μm is possible also with laboratory X-ray sources. We will present recent developments for the SLcam® concerning the sub-pixel resolution, optics aperture, image processing software, and connection to new High-Speed PIXE beamline at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Abstract

Im Rahmen des BMBF-geförderten „MEGA-Projektes“ haben sich Partner aus der Montanindustrie, Aufbereitungs-Verfahrenstechnik, dem analytischen Gerä­tebau, der geologisch-mineralogischen Forschung und der Anwendungs­forschung im Bereich optischer Technologien zusammengefunden. Dieses Kon­sortium wird gemeinsam Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaufgaben zu analy­tischen und methodischen Möglichkeiten eines XRF-Mine-Spektrometers evaluieren und direkt auf die Anwendungsfälle in Geologie, Bergbau, Aufbe­reitung und Metallurgie ausrichten. Das Ziel ist eine Optimierung der Wert­schöpfungskette von der Erkundung über die Exploration zur Aufbereitung und Metallurgie. Als erster Schritt erfolgt die Konzeption des XRF-Mine-Spektro­meters als Forschungsgerät, welches optimal an die Lösung ressourcentech­nologischer Fragestellungen angepasst ist. Das anvisierte XRF-Mine-Spektrometer für die (ultra)schnelle Vorort Röntgen­fluoreszenzspektroskopie (XRF-Spektroskopie) wird ein Analysegerät zur Spurenelementanalyse metallischer und mineralischer Primär- und Sekun­därrohstoffe. Die Bestimmung der Spurenelemente sowie ihrer räumlichen Ver­teilung in verschiedenen Mineralen erfolgt dabei in stark inhomogenen Ma­trices. Dies gestattet neben der Bestimmung von Gesamtspurenelement­gehalten auch die Berechnung aufbereitungstechnologisch relevanter Para­meter wie Korngrößen, Verwachsungsverhältnisse und Liberalisierungsgrad. Anhand verschiedener technologisch relevanter Aufbereitungsschemata von Metallerzen und Industriemineralen wird das Optimierungspotential der ent­sprechenden Aufbereitungsprozesse durch den Einsatz des XRF-Mine-Spec­trometers aufgezeigt.

Abstract

The color X-ray camera SLcam® is a full-field, single photon detector providing scanning-free, energy and spatially resolved X-ray imaging. Spatial resolution is achieved with the use of polycapillary optics guiding Xray photons from small regions on a sample to distinct energy dispersive pixels on a charged-coupled device detector. Applying sub-pixel resolution, signals from individual capillary channels can be distinguished. Therefore, the SLcam® spatial resolution, which is normally limited to the pixel size of the charge-coupled device, can be improved to the size of individual polycapillary channels. In this work a new approach to a sub-pixel resolution algorithm comprising photon events also from the pixel centers is proposed. The details of the employed numerical method and several sub-pixel resolution examples are presented and discussed.

The Color X-ray Camera, type SLcam®, can detect X-ray radiation with spatial and energy resolution. The device is used as an X-ray detector in applications at synchrotrons and on PIXE beamlines. The unique properties of SLcam®, a combination of a single photon counting CCD with a polycapillary optics objective, allows a fast overview over a large detection area with first results visible almost immediately. The maximal field of view exceeds 1 cm² and the spatial resolution can Approach several microns when using a sub-pixel algorithm.
