In the current study, we investigated whether how the VA healthcare system for mental health and/or SUD treatment predicted program enrollment into vocational rehabilitation, simultaneous mental health and/or SUD treatment while enrolled in vocational rehabilitation predicted employment at discharge, and mental health and/or SUD treatment continues and employment remain 60-days-post-vocational-rehabilitation discharge.Methods: An outcome-based, summative program evaluation design to measure quality assurance of vocational rehabilitation services provided to 402 veteran patients enrolled in a VA healthcare located within the Great Lakes Health Care System – Veterans Integrated Services Network.Results: Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed psychological empowerment (confidence in one’s ability to work or find work) is a significant factor determining whether a veteran is enrolled in the vocational rehabilitation program, prior mental health treatment (yes/no) and frequency of mental health treatment did not predict program enrollment, and frequency of SUD VA system treatment 60 days prior did not predict program enrollment. Other findings showed that simultaneous mental health and/or SUD treatment while enrolled in vocational rehabilitation did not predict employment at discharge, and employment at discharge did not predict continued mental health and/or SUD treatment post-discharge from vocational rehabilitation. However, veterans with both SUD and mental health and continued mental health treatment were less likely to be employed.Conclusion: Utilization of real-world program evaluation data from an actual VHA vocational rehabilitation program enhances the study’s ecological validity, offering practical implications for policymakers and practitioners in the field. The findings support the importance of veterans enrolling in mental health and/or SUD treatment simultaneously while enrolled in vocational rehabilitation services, as integrating vocational rehabilitation with mental health and SUD treatment services can lead to improved vocational and health outcomes for veterans (eg, development of targeted interventions to support veterans’ successful reintegration into the workforce and society).Keywords: substance use disorders, mental health, veterans affairs, health administration, veterans, vocational rehabilitation, treatment access

Assessing personality traits may help clinicians address the complexity of patients’ experiences and design treatments that target these vulnerabilities. This study aimed to identify the distinguishing personality traits of a cohort of patients with disabling chronic low back pain and to determine associations between those traits and fear-avoidance beliefs, depressive, and anxious moods.Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 102 chronic low back pain patients (57% male), who failed standard management and were referred to a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program. All patients completed the five domains of the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI)–Revised (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to experience, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness), the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). One-sample t-test was used to compare sample personality means with average population norms. Association between the five personality domains with TSK and HADS was assessed using Pearson’s correlation, adjusted for patient demographics and pain-related variables. Linear regression was used to estimate associations adjusted for covariates.Results: Both men and women had significantly lower scores in the Openness to experience domain and significantly higher scores in the Conscientiousness domain than the general population norms. After adjusting for covariates, Neuroticism was associated with higher fear-avoidance, depression and anxiety scores. Conversely, Extraversion and Openness to experience negatively correlated with depression scores. Extraversion also inversely correlated with fear-avoidance. Conscientiousness negatively correlated with depression and anxiety after adjustment.Conclusion: Patients with disabling chronic low back pain show personality characteristics that deviate significantly from the normal population norms but do not reach maladaptive forms of personality disorders. Clinicians would benefit from assessing patients’ personality traits to address protective and risk factors for psychological distress, particularly in difficult-to-treat, highly disabled low back pain patients.Keywords: NEO PI, anxiety, depression, kinesiophobia, chronic low back pain, personality

The focus of this work is on the nano-scale characterization of transition metal oxides employed as carrier selective contacts in crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells using crosssectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both electronselective (titanium dioxide, TiO 2 ) and hole-selective (molybdenum oxide, MoO x ; tungsten oxide, WO x textbf) contacts were investigated. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) images were obtained with a FEI Tecnai F30 TEM.

Flow cytometry is a versatile and high throughput technique for rapid and efficient biological testing. It requires a high level of conceptual, technical, and analytical skills to properly design experiments, effectively operate flow cytometry machines, and analyze the data. A lack of training and development of any of these three skills can result in underutilization and improper use of flow cytometric machines that can impede research progress. Often students develop these conceptual, technical, and analysis skills from trial and error, but many students either do not use this powerful flow cytometry technology, use it improperly or ineffectively, or give up using it without proper training and support. Here we report on a course which teaches flow cytometry skills to undergraduate and graduate students. The design of this course is unique in that it teaches conceptual, technical, and analytical skills related to flow cytometry in a full semester format. Undergraduate and graduate students reported significant increases in their confidence levels over the course of the semester. Here we provide our findings and resources for others who may want to implement a similar course.

One of the most central tenets of chemistry education is developing an understanding of the processes that involve the Transformation of Matter. Current German curricula postulate content-related abilities ("Kompetenzen") that are expected to be achieved by secondary students when graduating from the lower secondary level at grade 10. These abilities can further be differentiated as relating to either structural aspects of matter or to aspects of chemical reaction. Little is known of how "Kompetenzen" in these two fields develop over time on the lower secondary level. This study aims at elucidating this development by suggesting a hypothetical learning progression for the lower secondary level. This learning progression is visualised as a Strand Map and is investigated using methods from three statistical approaches: Rasch-analyses, Classical Test Theory, and Bayesian Networks. Concurrent data from all three strands of analyses inform the evaluation of the learning progression and support the notion that an understanding of the Transformation of Matter relies on interrelated "Kompetenzen" to conceptualize Structure of Matter and Chemical Reaction. Moreover, Bayesian networks underline that there is more than one progression when learning about chemistry on the lower secondary level. Contains notes and references.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using re-reading as a consequence for failing to read passages rapidly with zero errors using the "Direct Instruction approach with Corrective Reading, Skills Applications: Decoding C" (Engelmann, Meyer, Johnson, & Carnine, 1988). The participant was a 16-year-old high school student who read at a 7.2 grade level at the beginning of the study. During reading, he read slowly, made few errors and had close to perfect comprehension at the 7th grade level. The number of words read correctly, the number of errors made during an oral reading, and the number of times the student had to re-read the passage in order to correctly read the materials in 1 minute and 20 seconds was measured. An AB single case design was implemented to examine the effectiveness of Direct Instruction and the re-reading contingency. The results indicated that Direct Instruction and the re-reading contingency were effective in improving the rate of correct words read. The combined use of the re-reading and Direct Instruction is discussed.
