Abstract

This paper investigates systemic risk measures for stochastic financial networks of explicitly modelled bilateral liabilities. We extend the notion of systemic risk measures from Biagini, Fouque, Fritelli and Meyer-Brandis (2019) to graph structured data. In particular, we focus on an aggregation function that is derived from a market clearing algorithm proposed by Eisenberg and Noe (2001). In this setting, we show the existence of an optimal random allocation that distributes the overall minimal bailout capital and secures the network. We study numerical methods for the approximation of systemic risk and optimal random allocations. We propose to use permutation equivariant architectures of neural networks like graph neural networks (GNNs) and a class that we name (extended) permutation equivariant neural networks ((X)PENNs). We compare their performance to several benchmark allocations. The main feature of GNNs and (X)PENNs is that they are permutation equivariant with respect to the underlying graph data. 4. Nanoscale friction controlled by top layer thickness in [LaMnO$_{3}$]$_{m}$/[SrMnO$_{3}$]$_{n}$ superlattices

Abstract

We conducted lateral force microscopy measurements on seven [LaMnO$_{3}$]$_{m}$/[SrMnO$_{3}$]$_{n}$ superlattices with varied layer thicknesses. We observe that the friction forces and the friction coefficients initially increase with increasing LaMnO3 top layer thickness, followed by saturation when the top layer thickness exceeds a few nanometers. These observations clearly demonstrate that sliding friction is affected by sub-surface material properties to a depth of several nanometers and is not just determined by dynamics in the contact interface. We argue that the sub-surface dissipated energy is governed by damping in the elastically strained volume below the AFM tip, an effect which we estimate via thermoelasticity. The absence of a correlation between friction and the thermal resistivity of our superlattices shows furthermore that high-frequency phonons and heat conduction do not play a role in determining friction. Abstract

Bandit algorithms are often used in the e-commerce industry to train Machine Learning (ML) systems when pre-labeled data is unavailable. However, the industry setting poses various challenges that make implementing bandit algorithms in practice non-trivial. In this paper, we elaborate on the challenges of off-policy optimisation, delayed reward, concept drift, reward design, and business rules constraints that practitioners at Booking.com encounter when applying bandit algorithms. Our main contributions is an extension to the Open Bandit Pipeline (OBP) framework. Abstract

We theoretically study the frictional damping of a small probe object on a coated planar surface, analyzing the resulting phonon modes via a theory of viscoelasticity. Three different types of excitations are found to contribute to friction in distinct ways: traveling (3D) spherical waves, traveling (2D) surface waves, and evanescent waves. While traveling waves transport energy away from the probe, determined by long range elastic properties (wavelength), evanescent waves transform energy into heat in a near-field range, characterized by the size of the probe. Abstract

Despite the huge importance of friction in regulating movement in all natural and technological processes, the mechanisms underlying dissipation at a sliding contact are still a matter of debate. Attempts to explain the dependence of measured frictional losses at nanoscale contacts on the electronic degrees of freedom of the surrounding materials have so far been controversial. Here, it is proposed that friction can be explained by considering damping of stick-slip pulses in a sliding contact. Based on friction force microscopy studies of La$_{(1-x)}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ films at the ferromagnetic-metallic to paramagnetic-polaronic conductor phase transition, it is confirmed that the sliding contact generates thermally-activated slip pulses in the nanoscale contact, and argued that these are damped by direct coupling into phonon bath. Electron-phonon coupling leads to the formation of Jahn-Teller polarons and a clear increase in friction in the high temperature phase. There is no evidence for direct electronic drag on the atomic force microscope tip nor any indication of contributions from electrostatic forces. This intuitive scenario, that friction is governed by the damping of surface vibrational excitations, provides a basis for reconciling controversies in literature studies as well as suggesting possible tactics for controlling friction.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze discrepancies between self‐ and proxy‐rated health‐related quality of life (HRQoL), measured with the EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level survey (EQ‐5D‐5L), in people living with dementia (PlwD) and their caregivers on an individual response level. METHODS: EQ‐5D‐5L, sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained from baseline data of n = 174 dyads of a cluster‐randomized, controlled intervention trial. Self‐ and proxy‐rated EQ‐5D‐5L health profiles were evaluated in terms of response distribution and agreement (weighted Kappa), and discrepancies in individual dimension level were analyzed using the Paretian Classification of Health Change (PCHC) as well as the presence and degree of inconsistencies between ratings. RESULTS: PlwD had a mean age of 80.1, nearly the half were female and 82.3% were mildly to moderately cognitively impaired. PlwD reported a higher utility index than caregiver proxies (mean 0.75 vs. 0.68, 83% of PlwD > 0.5). According to the PCHC and inconsistency approach, 95% of PlwD rated their health differently compared to proxies; 66% with divergent responses in at least three EQ‐5D‐5L dimensions. Nine dyads (5%) showed identical ratings. Discrepancies of one higher or lower EQ‐5D‐5L response represented the most frequent discrepancy (35.4%). Caregivers were two times more likely to report "moderate problems," representing the middle of the 5‐point Likert scale. Usual activities had the lowest agreement between ratings (weighted kappa = 0.23). In PlwD reporting no or some problems in EQ‐5D‐5L‐dimensions, proxies were more likely to report more problems and vice versa, especially in the more observable dimension usual activities and less likely in the less observable domains pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. DISCUSSION: The central tendency bias observed in proxy‐ratings could be associated with assessment uncertainties, resulting in an underestimation (overestimation) in PlwD reporting better (worse) health. This diverging trend extends the knowledge from previous studies and underlines the need for more methodological research in this area. Abstract

Simulating a business process aims at analyzing the process’s dynamic behavior without having to execute the process. In research and practice of Business Process Management, simulating business processes has been a continuing focus since the 1990s – widely acknowledged as essential technique for quantitative process analysis. Despite its relevance, a differentiated understanding of requirements towards process modeling languages for creating simulation models and user requirements for simulation approaches and tools is missing at present. Based on a systematic and purposeful sampling of prior work combining different search strategies, the present study compiles and synthesizes 113 prior research contributions on business process simulation. Categorizing 56 language and user requirements results in an organizing overview that informs future design research on simulation approaches and tools that benefit (prospective) users of BPS. The annual student journal "Die junge Mommsen" publishes outstanding student theses and dissertations written at the History Department of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and makes them freely accessible. On the one hand, students should have free access to sample works, which they can use as orientation when writing their own theses. On the other hand, the journal gives the student authors of the journal the opportunity to gain their first experience in scientific publishing. Neither the journal nor the individual volumes focus on a specific topic. On the contrary, the aim is to achieve the greatest possible thematic diversity in the field of historical sciences in the spirit of exemplary character. In der jährlich erscheinenden studentischen Zeitschrift "Die junge Mommsen" werden hervorragende und am Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin verfasste studentische Haus- und Abschlussarbeiten publiziert und frei zugänglich gemacht. Zum einen sollen dadurch Studierende freien Zugriff auf Beispielarbeiten erhalten, an denen sie sich beim Schreiben der eigenen Arbeiten orientieren können. Zum anderen erhalten die studentischen Autoren der Beiträge mit der Zeitschrift die Möglichkeit, erste Erfahrungen im Wissenschaftlichen Publizieren zu sammeln. 36. Structure-Based Monomerization of Human Serine Protease HTRA1 towards Evolutive Engineering of Activity Modulators

Abstract

Human serine protease HTRA1 plays an important role in a plethora of physiological processes by recognition and conversion of numerous different substrates. Various studies suggested that HTRA1 is involved in several diseases, such as osteoarthritis, cancer, age-related macular degeneration or Alzheimer disease. The aim of this work was the generation of molecules that modulate HTRA1 activity, which could act as tools for validation of HTRA1 as a potential therapeutic target. An initial approach was the monomerization of multimeric HTRA1 that is composed of trimers as well as higher oligomers of unknown composition to get an easier to handle and more controllable target for evolutionary design of interacting molecules. Accordingly, structural data of the trimer was applied for the design of amino acid replacements that are supposedly important for trimerization, resulting in stable monomeric fractions of HTRA1 catalytic domain. Three different scaffold libraries were screened by yeast surface display towards binding of monomeric HTRA1. The miniprotein McoTI II-based library, which is a trypsin inhibitor from squash plant, delivered a single molecule that bound monomeric HTRA1 with nanomolar affinity, but not native trimeric HTRA1. Similarly, the two molecules isolated from an immunized VHH library, which is the variable domain of a single domain camelid immunoglobulin, also bind only monomeric HTRA1 with nanomolar affinities, but not native trimeric HTRA1. The third library was a vNAR library, which is the variable domain of a single domain shark immunoglobulin that was synthetically randomized in CDR3. Six independent molecules were isolated against monomeric HTRA1 and five of them were shown to bind native trimeric HTRA1 with micromolar affinities. By stepwise affinity maturation of CDR1 and HV2, affinities were improved to double digit nanomolar affinities. 38. Geschlechtersensibler Geschichtsunterricht mit österreichischen Geschichtsschulbüchern

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, inwiefern geschlechtersensibler Unterricht im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema „Frauen im Ersten Weltkrieg“ durch österreichische Geschichtsschulbücher für die dritte Klasse AHS ermöglicht wird. Die Umsetzung von Geschlechtersensibilität im Bereich der Schulbildung ist seit bereits knapp zwanzig Jahren gesetzlich verankert. In der Geschichtsdidaktik gibt es aber erst seit rund zehn Jahren ernsthafte Bemühungen zu deren Implementierung. Eine zentrale Forderung ist, dass die Kategorie Geschlecht in Zusammenhang mit allen Themen berücksichtigt werden muss. Somit betrifft dies auch den Ersten Weltkrieg. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird zuerst ausführlich der Forschungsstand bezüglich der verschiedenartigen Lebenszusammenhänge von Frauen im Ersten Weltkrieg dargelegt. Es werden auch die Entwicklungen vor und nach dem Krieg berücksichtigt, wobei der Fokus auf Österreich liegt. Weiters wird auf die Prinzipien und Ziele der geschlechtersensiblen (Geschichts-)Didaktik eingegangen und der diesbezügliche gesetzliche Rahmen beschrieben. Beantwortet wird die grundlegende Fragestellung anhand einer vergleichenden Schulbuchanalyse. Für diese wurden die fünf derzeit auflagenstärksten Schulbücher für die dritte Klasse AHS herangezogen., This work deals with the question, how and to what extent gender-sensitive teaching concerning the topic “Women in the First World War” is supported by Austrian history textbooks for the seventh grade (third class AHS). The implementation of gender sensitivity in education has been established in law for almost twenty years. In the didactics of history, however, serious efforts for its implementation have been made only in the last ten years. A major requirement is that the category of gender must be considered in connection with all topics. Therefore, this also applies to the First World War. The present work deals intensively with the various contexts in which women lived during the First World War. It also takes into account the developments before and after the war, with a focus on Austria. Furthermore, the principles and goals of gendersensitive (history) didactics and the legal framework in this regard are discussed. A textbook analysis comparing the five most widely used current textbooks, for the third class AHS, answers the main question.

50. Discrepancies between self- and proxy-rated quality of life in people living with dementia.

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze discrepancies between self- and proxy-rated health-related quality of life (HRQoL), measured with the EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level survey (EQ-5D-5L), in people living with dementia (PlwD) and their caregivers on an individual response level., Methods: EQ-5D-5L, sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained from baseline data of n = 174 dyads of a cluster-randomized, controlled intervention trial. Self- and proxy-rated EQ-5D-5L health profiles were evaluated in terms of response distribution and agreement (weighted Kappa), and discrepancies in individual dimension level were analyzed using the Paretian Classification of Health Change (PCHC) as well as the presence and degree of inconsistencies between ratings., Results: PlwD had a mean age of 80.1, nearly the half were female and 82.3% were mildly to moderately cognitively impaired. PlwD reported a higher utility index than caregiver proxies (mean 0.75 vs. 0.68, 83% of PlwD > 0.5). According to the PCHC and inconsistency approach, 95% of PlwD rated their health differently compared to proxies; 66% with divergent responses in at least three EQ-5D-5L dimensions. Nine dyads (5%) showed identical ratings. Discrepancies of one higher or lower EQ-5D-5L response represented the most frequent discrepancy (35.4%). Caregivers were two times more likely to report "moderate problems," representing the middle of the 5-point Likert scale. Usual activities had the lowest agreement between ratings (weighted kappa = 0.23). In PlwD reporting no or some problems in EQ-5D-5L-dimensions, proxies were more likely to report more problems and vice versa, especially in the more observable dimension usual activities and less likely in the less observable domains pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression ., Discussion: The central tendency bias observed in proxy-ratings could be associated with assessment uncertainties, resulting in an underestimation (overestimation) in PlwD reporting better (worse) health.
