Abstract

This open access book offers a fully illustrated compendium of glossary terms and basic principles in the field of palynology, making it an indispensable tool for all palynologists. It is a revised and extended edition of “Pollen Terminology. An illustrated handbook,” published in 2009. This second edition, titled “Illustrated Pollen Terminology” shares additional insights into new and stunning aspects of palynology. In this context, the general chapters have been critically revised, expanded and restructured. The chapter “Misinterpretations in Palynology” has been extended with new research data and additional ambiguous terms, e.g., polyads vs. massulae; the chapter “Methods in Palynology” has been extensively enhanced with illustrated protocols showing the majority of the methods and techniques used when studying recent and fossil pollen with LM, SEM and TEM. Moreover, additional information about the description and publication of pollen data is provided in the chapter “How to Describe and Illustrate Pollen Grains.” Various other parts of the general chapters have now been updated and/or extended with more comprehensive textual passages and new illustrations. The chapter “Illustrated Pollen Terms” now features new and more appropriate examples of each term, including additional LM micrographs. Where necessary, the entries for selected pollen terms have been refined by rewording or adding definitions, illustrations, and new micrographs. Lastly, new terms are included, such as “suprasculpture” and the prefix “nano-“ for ornamentation features. The chapter “Illustrated Pollen Terms” is the main part of this book and comprises more than 300 widely used terms illustrated with over 1,000 high-quality images. It provides a detailed survey of the manifold ornamentation and structures of pollen, and offers essential insights into their stunning beauty.

25. Comparing the acetolysed and hydrated methods for the pollen analysis of honey.

Abstract

Melissopalynology is an integral part of honey analysis and indicates the honey's botanical and geographical origin. Two preparation methods for light microscopy are commonly and interchangeably used in laboratories: acetolysis and hydration of honey samples. In this study, an extended comparison of the two methods was performed. Eight honey samples from eight locations in central Europe were analysed according to both standard procedures. We identified the pollen grains with 1000× magnification to the lowest possible taxonomic rank and counted out the relative abundances of each pollen type in the sample. In addition, potential other biases that might affect the results were investigated by analysing one honey sample multiple times with each method, consecutively. Across all honey samples, more pollen types were identified with the hydrated method (136) compared to the acetolysed method (95). For the hydrated method, less washing steps were necessary and a higher amount of pollen grains remained. No taxa-specific loss could be observed, apart from Myosotis sp., which was present in significantly lesser amounts in acetolysed compared to hydrated samples. This study shows a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods, which are also highlighted in a side-by-side comparison box. Both methods are equally suitable to perform melissopalynological analysis of the most common pollen types and pollen type combinations in honey. Abstract

Many library professionals excel in supporting their clients in their research activities, yet not all of them are good at undertaking research to improve their own library management practices. But research to support effective library decision making should become part of daily practice: to help library managers learn more about their work, to develop better services and to share ideas about best practice. It helps us build a body of professional knowledge that can benefit the entire profession. The EBLIP-process aims at helping library professionals by working through the seperate stages of formulating the significant research questions, searching for the best available evidence to answer the questions, critically appraising the evidence, establishing the value of the anticipated benefits of the action plan that is developed, and reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of that action plan. The paper presents an introduction to the management approach of Evidence Based Library and Information Practice, its key concepts and principles. Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP) is emerging as a key topic of discussion amongst many professionals in the library and information services sector, especially in the US, UK and Australia. In countries like Germany and other European countries EBLIP is still fairly unknown. This paper paper is based on a workshop held by Prof. Gillian Hallam from Queensland Technology University (Brisbane, Australia) during the International Summer School at Stuttgart Media University in June 2008.

This thesis provides an assessment of the factors influencing the politics of the European social dimension. In recent years the debate on European social legislation has often assumed centre stage on the transnational and national policy agendas of many member states. However, compared with the rapid implementation of the measures aimed at bringing about the creation of the internal market, there has been little progress in the creation of a floor of European social rights which Jacques Delors had called for in 1989. This research seeks to highlight the determining factors behind the slow progress of the European social dimension. As the member state, through their representation at the European Council/Council of Ministers remain the prime decision-making powers, this study focused on the factors shaping decision-making in two member states, Britain and Germany. These two countries are held to represent different welfare state regime types (Esping-Andersen, 1990), divergent industrial relations systems and different styles of policy making. All the above factors have been held to shape policy outcomes in the social state and would therefore lead us to expect different approaches to the EC social dimension. The study equally seeks to assess claims that "trade union failure" is partly to blame for the lack of progress in European social policy making. Different authors have stressed their failure to adapt their organisational structures to the challenges of European integration. Different views represented between national affiliates and structural weakness of the trade unions were also considered to be important factors. Britain and Germany represent very different positions within the European Communities and towards the social dimension in particular. This is to some extent conditioned by their industrial relations and welfare state systems, but this cannot fully explain why certain positions are adopted in the Council. In Germany the economic challenges arising form the world recession and German unification have led to substantial changes in social policy making.

Abstract

We examine investor behavior on a leading peer-to-business lending platform and identify an investment mistake that we refer to as default shock bias. First, we find that investors stop investing in new loans and cease diversifying their portfolio after experiencing a loan default. The default shock significantly worsens the risk–return profile of investors’ loan portfolios. The defaults investors experience are often not beyond what would have been expected from the information that was provided by the platform ex ante. Second, investment experience on the platform is related to better investment decisions in general, but it does not reduce the default shock bias. These findings have important implications not only for the behavioral finance literature but also more generally for new forms of Internet-based finance.
