3. Climate-change-driven ocean cooling on the west Antarctic continental shelves in a high-resolution coupled climate model

Abstract

The supply of warm circumpolar deep water to the west Antarctic continental shelves is a key driver of the rapid melting and retreat of the surrounding glaciers. Future changes in Antarctic glacial melt are the largest source of uncertainty in sea level rise projections, so are crucial to understand. Here, we use high-resolution coupled climate models to demonstrate that the ocean forcing of ice shelf melt can both increase and decrease under high-emission scenarios, revealing deep uncertainty about the sign of these changes. HadGEM3-HH, with a 1/12° ocean model, faithfully captures the circulation and hydrography of the Amundsen Sea in the present-day climate. However, under the HighRes-Future scenario, the model undergoes a sudden shift to cold conditions on the Amundsen Sea continental shelf during 2040-2046, with temperatures at 500 m depth decreasing by around 2 °C, despite steady warming at the surface. We demonstrate that this sudden shift can be traced back to increased sea ice melting driven by surface warming, especially in the Bellingshausen Sea. The resultant fresh anomalies are advected into the Amundsen Sea, where they disrupt the advection of warm deep water onto the continental shelf. This contrasts with HadGEM3-MM (1/4° ocean model), which exhibits substantial cold biases in the present day but substantial deep warming from 2070-2100. These simulations imply that there exists an alternative stable state for the west Antarctic continental shelves, with cold deep waters and low ice shelf melt rates, that could plausibly be reached under future climate change., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Ocean Science, 17(6), (2021): 1677–1751, https://doi.org/10.5194/os-17-1677-2021., Over the past decade, our understanding of the Indian Ocean has advanced through concerted efforts toward measuring the ocean circulation and air–sea exchanges, detecting changes in water masses, and linking physical processes to ecologically important variables. New circulation pathways and mechanisms have been discovered that control atmospheric and oceanic mean state and variability. This review brings together new understanding of the ocean–atmosphere system in the Indian Ocean since the last comprehensive review, describing the Indian Ocean circulation patterns, air–sea interactions, and climate variability. Coordinated international focus on the Indian Ocean has motivated the application of new technologies to deliver higher-resolution observations and models of Indian Ocean processes. As a result we are discovering the importance of small-scale processes in setting the large-scale gradients and circulation, interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes, interactions between boundary currents and the interior, and interactions between the surface and the deep ocean. A newly discovered regional climate mode in the southeast Indian Ocean, the Ningaloo Niño, has instigated more regional air–sea coupling and marine heatwave research in the global oceans. In the last decade, we have seen rapid warming of the Indian Ocean overlaid with extremes in the form of marine heatwaves. These events have motivated studies that have delivered new insight into the variability in ocean heat content and exchanges in the Indian Ocean and have highlighted the critical role of the Indian Ocean as a clearing house for anthropogenic heat. This synthesis paper reviews the advances in these areas in the last decade., Helen E. Abstract

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that \EURECA explored — from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation — are presented along with an overview \EURECA’s outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.

Abstract

Over the past decade, our understanding of the Indian Ocean has advanced through concerted efforts toward measuring the ocean circulation and its water properties, detecting changes in water masses, and linking physical processes to ecologically important variables. New circulation pathways and mechanisms have been discovered, which control atmospheric and oceanic mean state and variability. This review brings together new understanding of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Indian Ocean since the last comprehensive review, describing the Indian Ocean circulation patterns, air-sea interactions and climate variability. The second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2) and related efforts have motivated the application of new technologies to deliver higher-resolution observations and models of Indian Ocean processes. As a result we are discovering the importance of small scale processes in setting the large-scale gradients and circulation, interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes, interactions between boundary currents and the interior, and between the surface and the deep ocean. In the last decade we have seen rapid warming of the Indian Ocean overlaid with extremes in the form of marine heatwaves. These events have motivated studies that have delivered new insight into the variability in ocean heat content and exchanges in the Indian Ocean, and climate variability on interannual to decadal timescales.This synthesis paper reviews the advances in these areas in the last decade.

19. Eddy dynamics and filaments inject oxygenated, high-salinity Persian Gulf Water into the Bay of Bengal.

Abstract

Persian Gulf Water (PGW) is an oxygenated, high-salinity water mass that originates in thePersian Gulf. Injection of PGW into the Bay of Bengal (BoB) could act to ventilate the BoBoxygen minimum zone, but little is known about when, where and how PGW is transported tothe BoB. Using a combination of models and observations, we show that eddy-like featuresinject PGW into the BoB throughout the year, and we identify the pathways and time scalesfor transport of PGW from the Arabian Sea. Temperature, salinity and oxygen observationsfrom an autonomous ocean glider deployed at 85.5˚ E as part of the Bay of Bengal BoundaryLayer Experiment (BoBBLE) demonstrate the presence of PGW in the southwesternBay of Bengal (BoB); the glider observes an increase in salinity and oxygen at thepotential density of PGW (1026.5 kg m−3, approximately 250 m deep). Output froma NEMO 1/12th degree ocean reanalysis product show that this PGW signal isassociated with a northward-flowing filament of high-salinity water, and backwardparticle tracking experiments confirm that the origin of this water is in the northernArabian Sea. The particle tracking experiments identify two pathways along whichPGW travels from its outflow in the northern Arabian Sea to the southwestern BoB.One pathway follows the coast of India southward in the eastern Arabian Sea; thesecond follows the Omani and Somali coasts southward in the western Arabian Seaand connects to the BoB via the equatorial currents. The shorter, eastern pathwaytakes approximately 3.5 years; the longer, western pathway takes approximately4.5 years. We calculate the transient salinity flux, v′S′, into the BoB across 8˚ Nfrom 11 years of NEMO reanalysis to investigate the interannual and longitudinalvariability of the PGW flux into the BoB. The greatest influx of PGW into the BoB isto the east of Sri Lanka, in which region the time-mean salinity flux is directednorthwards. The PGW filament observed by the glider, however, is anomalous:it occurs in a region of limited salt flux and the filament does not occur as partof an eddy-like feature, which the majority of flux events appear to be.
