Abstract

The article reports on the healthy and Cronartium conigenum infected female strobili of "Pinus maximinoi," collected in Guatemala, which were histopathologically studied by light microscopy. Scales from infected cones were fused and fertile scales had aborted seeds. The cell walls of infected tissues in the ovules were darkly stained, while those of comparable healthy tissue were colorless under Pianeze's IIIB stain. The cells of each tissue type contained many haustoria and did not develop into female gametophyte and embryo.

13. Dermatoglyphic asymmetry as a measure of canalization

Abstract

Fluctuating asymmetry has been used frequently, especially in the experimental literature, as a measure of developmental stability. However, the relationship between asymmetry and the ability of the genotype to produce an adaptive phenotype is far from clear. In this paper we evaluate the relationship between asymmetry and the mean of a quantitative trait in humans. The trait used is the a-b ridge-count, the count between the a and b triradius in the second interdigital area of the palm. The extremes of both ends of the a-b count distribution exhibit greater asymmetry than values closer to the mean. This evidence suggests that dermatoglyphic asymmetry does reflect to some extent the degree to which the developing phenotype is controlled.

Abstract

A method for recovering dermatoglyphic data from tamarin cadavers is described. The method involves the complete removal of the palmar and plantar pads with no destruction to the underlying skeletal elements. Once recovered, the pads are stored in a formalin solution. The stored pads of 213 individuals have remained in a good state of preservation for dermatoglyphic analysis for over four years.

Abstract

A marketing approach, the process of controlling exchanges in order to accomplish objectives, should be a basic skill among those used by an occupational therapy manager. Departmental management can be greatly facilitated by using marketing techniques to identify, analyze, and improve relationships, developing them into successful exchanges. By avoiding a marketing attitude an occupational therapy manager may well be unresponsive to health care realities and changes. Accounts of two actual situations experienced by occupational therapy administrators are described. Each therapist is emoloyed in a different setting. Each achieved a successful solution to an aministrative problem using a well-planned marketing strategy. Each situation and resultt is unique, yet a similar thread can be traced from needs identification through enabling transactions to problem resolutions.
