1. The Self-Efficacy and Confidence of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Students in Understanding the Learning Needs of Children with Autism: Findings from a Focus Group Discussion

Abstract

This research explored influences on self-efficacy and confidence for ITE students when teaching children with autism. Self-efficacy, defined by Bandura (1997), is a person's perception of their capacity to carry out a course of action which will enable their attainment. The language of confidence was adopted when considering how ITE students experience self-efficacy. Qualitative data from interviews and a focus group discussion were analysed adopting an interpretative approach. Initial thematic analysis revealed the perceived importance of first-hand experience to develop knowledge and confidence, echoing Bandura's (2006) argument that self-efficacy is developed through mastery experiences. The interrelated influence of emotional competency was also identified as pervading the discourse (Bunaiasu, 2018). Interpretative analysis of the group discussion identified an increase in the perceived confidence of participants. Findings therefore support Bandura's claim that talking develops self-efficacy and confidence through vicarious and persuasive experiences (Bandura, 1997). The vicarious experience enabled through the focus group appears to have supported emotional competence. Consequently, confidence and self-efficacy appear to have increased, when reflecting on teaching children with autism. Further research is needed to explore whether such experiences in focus group discussion can potentially inform pedagogical approaches to develop self-efficacy, confidence and emotional competence.

Abstract

We previously identified associations with ovarian cancer outcome at five genetic loci. To identify putatively causal genetic variants and target genes, we prioritized two ovarian outcome loci (1q22 and 19p12) for further study. Bioinformatic and functional genetic analyses indicated that MEF2D and ZNF100 are targets of candidate outcome variants at 1q22 and 19p12, respectively. At 19p12, the chromatin interaction of a putative regulatory element with the ZNF100 promoter region correlated with candidate outcome variants. At 1q22, putative regulatory elements enhanced MEF2D promoter activity and haplotypes containing candidate outcome variants modulated these effects. In a public dataset, MEF2D and ZNF100 expression were both associated with ovarian cancer progression-free or overall survival time. In an extended set of 6,162 epithelial ovarian cancer patients, we found that functional candidates at the 1q22 and 19p12 loci, as well as other regional variants, were nominally associated with patient outcome; however, no associations reached our threshold for statistical significance (p

4. Hormonal and reproductive factors and incidence of basal cell carcinoma in a population-based cohort

Abstract

Estrogens have photosensitizing properties, but few prospective studies have examined the relationship between hormonal and reproductive factors and incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in women. Previous findings have been inconsistent, particularly in relation to parity and use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). Given the heterogeneity in the literature, we sought to examine the association between hormonal and reproductive factors and BCC risk in a cohort of women (n=23,879) enrolled in the QSkin Study in 2011. The baseline survey included questions about use of OCs and MHT, age at menarche, menopausal status, age at menopause and parity. We restricted our analysis to white women with no past history of treatments for skin cancer and less than 6 treatments for actinic keratoses (n=11,204) and used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the hazards ratio associated with each potential hormonal/reproductive factor and first histologically confirmed BCC, while taking account of the potentially confounding influence of sun exposure history, phenotypic characteristics, body mass index and smoking history. During a median follow-up duration of 2.95 years, 352 women developed BCC. In preliminary analyses, amongst post-menopausal women, ever use of MHT at baseline was associated with an increased risk of developing BCC compared to never users (adjusted HR1.4; 95%CI 1.1-1.9), but risk did not differ by duration of use. We found no association between parity, age at menarche, age at menopause or use of OCs and BCC incidence. Future work will examine whether MHT use is associated with an increased risk of a second primary BCC.

Abstract

Because both ovarian and breast cancer are hormone-related and are known to have some predisposition genes in common, we evaluated 11 of the most significant hits (six with confirmed associations with breast cancer) from the breast cancer genome-wide association study for association with invasive ovarian cancer. Eleven SNPs were initially genotyped in 2927 invasive ovarian cancer cases and 4143 controls from six ovarian cancer case-control studies. Genotype frequencies in cases and controls were compared using a likelihood ratio test in a logistic regression model stratified by study. Initially, three SNPs (rs2107425 in MRPL23, rs7313833 in PTHLH, rs3803662 in TNRC9) were weakly associated with ovarian cancer risk and one SNP (rs4954956 in NXPH2) was associated with serous ovarian cancer in non-Hispanic white subjects (P-trend < 0.1). These four SNPs were then genotyped in an additional 4060 cases and 6308 controls from eight independent studies. Only rs4954956 was significantly associated with ovarian cancer risk both in the replication study and in combined analyses. This association was stronger for the serous histological subtype [per minor allele odds ratio (OR) 1.07 95% CI 1.01-1.13, P-trend = 0.02 for all types of ovarian cancer and OR 1.14 95% CI 1.07-1.22, P-trend = 0.00017 for serous ovarian cancer]. In conclusion, we found that rs4954956 was associated with increased ovarian cancer risk, particularly for serous ovarian cancer. However, none of the six confirmed breast cancer susceptibility variants we tested was associated with ovarian cancer risk. Further work will be needed to identify the causal variant associated with rs4954956 or elucidate its function.

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers varies by genetic and familial factors. About 50 common variants have been shown to modify BC risk for mutation carriers. All but three, were identified in general population studies. Other mutation carrier-specific susceptibility variants may exist but studies of mutation carriers have so far been underpowered. We conduct a novel case-only genome-wide association study comparing genotype frequencies between 60,212 general population BC cases and 13,007 cases with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. We identify robust novel associations for 2 variants with BC for BRCA1 and 3 for BRCA2 mutation carriers, P, Breast cancer risk for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers varies depending on other genetic factors. Here, the authors perform a case-only genome-wide association study and highlight novel loci associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers.

Abstract

This paper explores how an actuated pin-based shape display may serve as a platform on which to build musical instruments and controllers. We designed and prototyped three new instruments that use the shape display not only as an input device, but also as a source of acoustic sound. These cover a range of interaction paradigms to generate ambient textures, polyrhythms, and melodies. This paper first presents existing work from which we drew interactions and metaphors for our designs. We then introduce each of our instruments and the back-end software we used to prototype them. Finally, we offer reflections on some central themes of NIME, including the relationship between musician and machine.

Abstract

A locus at 19p13 is associated with breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) risk. Here we analyse 438 SNPs in this region in 46,451 BC and 15,438 OC cases, 15,252 BRCA1 mutation carriers and 73,444 controls and identify 13 candidate causal SNPs associated with serous OC (P=9.2 × 10−20), ER-negative BC (P=1.1 × 10−13), BRCA1-associated BC (P=7.7 × 10−16) and triple negative BC (P-diff=2 × 10−5). Genotype-gene expression associations are identified for candidate target genes ANKLE1 (P=2 × 10−3) and ABHD8 (P, A region on chromosome 19p13 is associated with the risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer. Here, the authors genotyped SNPs in this region in thousands of breast and ovarian cancer patients and identified SNPs associated with three genes, which were analysed with functional studies.
