The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) is a global forum made by telecommunications providers to promote user-oriented mobile services and data businesses. Devised by OMTP, BONDI is a browser-based application or a mobile Web run-time platform to help widgets make good use of the functions of mobile devices in a secure way. BONDI enables applications programmed with Web standard technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and AJAX to reach the internal functions of mobile devices. Since BONDI, which is not just a simple network application, can reach the internal resources of devices in standard ways, it enables the application and widgets to be developed regardless of the operating system (OS) or platform. Web browser-based widgets are vulnerable to the network environment, and their execution speed can be slowed as the operations of the widgets or applications become heavy. Compared with the native widgets inside the device, however, those Web widgets will be continuously used thanks to the user-friendly simple interface and the faster speed in using Web resources. This study deals with a method to effectively operate and manage the resources of OMTP BONDI Web widget and provides improved results based on running performance evaluation experiments. The experiments were carried out to improve the entire operating time by enhancing the module-loading speed. In this regard, only indispensable modules were allowed to be loaded while the BONDI widget was underway. For this purpose, the widget resource list, which can make the operating speed of the BONDI widget faster, was redefined while a widget cache was employed. In addition, the widget box, a management tool for removed widgets, was devised to store temporarily idle widgets.

The use of web widgets on desktop and mobile devices has been increasing rapidly. Web widgets provide access to activities and information from various sources across the web. As the number of supported widgets increases, managing widgets and finding relevant or interesting widgets becomes more complex. In addition, interacting with widgets in web service systems can be difficult, especially for novice users. Up to this point, there has been little research on web widget usability. This paper performs an experimental study regarding user interfaces of web widgets based on the mouse tracking and work-flow analysis. In the experiment, four sites providing widget services are chosen - iGoogle, Netvibes, My yahoo, and Wizard. The experiment participants perform three assigned tasks in the chosen sites, and their mouse operations are recorded using Camtasia, a screen casting software. Mouse tracking analysis is performed based on the recorded data in order to analyze common user behaviors. In addition, work-flow diagrams representing the operational flows to carry out the given tasks in each web site are constructed so as to visually and systematically analyze detailed usage patterns. The experimental study results presented in this paper can contribute to developing guidelines for highly usable and accessible interface design of web widgets.

Human computation, a term introduced by Luis von Ahn ( 1 ), refers to distributed systems that combine the strengths of humans and computers to accomplish tasks that neither can do alone ( 2 ). The seminal example is reCAPTCHA, a Web widget used by 100 million people a day when they transcribe distorted text into a box to prove they are human. This free cognitive labor provides users with access to Web content and keeps websites safe from spam attacks, while feeding into a massive, crowd-powered transcription engine that has digitized 13 million articles from The New York Times archives ( 3 ). But perhaps the best known example of human computation is Wikipedia. Despite initial concerns about accuracy ( 4 ), it has become the key resource for all kinds of basic information. Information science has begun to build on these early successes, demonstrating the potential to evolve human computation systems that can model and address wicked problems (those that defy traditional problem-solving methods) at the intersection of economic, environmental, and sociopolitical systems.

In this article we describe how we developed and how we use a tool for teachers enhancing inter-group collaboration of learners using wikis in project-based learning settings with over 100 participants, where different groups of students develop similar projects and each project has an own wiki page. To achieve our goal we extended typical wiki functionality by using web widgets, mini applications embedded anywhere in the wiki environment using the iframe tag. Two different evaluation widgets (rating widget and 'working progress' widget) are placed on each of the project pages. The project groups use the 'working progress' widget to declare the amount of work done. The teacher and the rest of the learning community use the 'rating' widget to rate the ongoing project work. A so called 'meta widget' showing a summary of the results of the 'rating' and 'working progress' widget can be displayed on the start page of the learning community or if a project is divided in different milestones, on the page describing the goals and timeline for the milestone. Evaluation widgets and meta widget, which easily can be embedded by the teacher potentially all over the wiki pages, enhances visibility of quality and termination degree of a project and enhance so the self, the tutor and the peer review opportunities in such large scale project based learning settings. The created evaluation widgets and meta widgets have been embedded in the wiki of a three months curriculum. The evaluation of utility and usability of the widgets is ongoing. The educational value of rating and reflecting about the working progress of a given task is discussed.

Whiteboards support face to face meetings by facilitating the sharing of ideas, focusing attention, and summarizing. However, at the end of the meeting participants desire some record of the information from the whiteboard. While there are whiteboards with built-in printers, they are expensive and relatively uncommon. We consider the capture of the information on a whiteboard with a mobile phone, improving the image quality with a cloud service, and sharing the results. This paper describes the algorithm for improving whiteboard image quality, the user experience for both a web widget and a smartphone application, and the necessary adaptations for providing this as a web service. The web widget, and mobile apps for both iPhone and Android are currently freely available, and have been used by more than 50,000 people.

RCS offers mobile subscribers an anywhere, anytime communications experience over any device. RCS Web Widget can be embedded to web 2.0 social networks, and provides end users to do enriched communication with each other through a standard web browser. To achieve this, a so-called Telecom Exposure Layer at the operator network provides interfaces to easily integrate telecom capabilities with Internet services, and a Telco APIs exposure reference model for telecom operators to expose their network and services capabilities is present. A use case of RCS Web Widget embedded to SNS reflects the concept of mashing up telecom services with Web 2.0.

This paper discusses the WebOS system based on the Ext framework and Cloud Computing, which achieves an powerful, flexible and high performance front-end UI System Framework and can be well extended by using Ext. It provide basic operating system services needed to build applications that are geographically distributed, highly available, incrementally scalable, and dynamically reconfigurable. The WebOS framework enables a new paradigm for Internet services. Instead of being fixed to a single location, services can dynamically push parts of their functionality out onto Internet computing resources, and even all the way to the client. In the developing process, development and design process of Web widget is practiced which is based on Microsoft's latest windows Azure cloud computing platform and web2.0 technology.

We present a technique for automatically detecting security vulnerabilities in client-side self-contained components, called web widgets, that can co-exist independently on a single web page. In this paper we focus on two security scenarios, namely the case in which (1) a malicious widget changes the content (DOM) of another widget, and (2) a widget steals data from another widget and sends it to the server via an HTTP request. We propose a dynamic analysis approach for automatically executing the web application and analyzing the runtime changes in the user interface, as well as the outgoing HTTP calls, to detect inter-widget interaction violations. Our approach, implemented in a number of open source Atusa plugins, called Diva, requires no modification of application code, and has few false positives. We discuss the results of an empirical evaluation of the violation revealing capabilities, performance, and scalability of our approach, by means of two case studies, on the Exact Widget Framework and Pageflakes, a commercial, widely used widget framework.

International audience; Social interaction leverages collective intelligence through user-generated content, social networking, and social annotation. Users are enabled to enrich knowledge representation by rating, commenting, and tagging. The existing systems for service discovery make use of semantic relation among social tags, but ignore the relation between a user information need for services and tags. This paper first provides an overview of how social tagging is applied to discover contents/services. An enhanced web widget discovery model that aims to discover services mostly relevant to users is then proposed. The model includes an algorithm that quantifies the accurate relation between user intent for a service and the tags of a widget, as well as three different widget discovery schemes. Using the online service of Widgetbox.com, we experimentally demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our system.
