This white paper discusses the breadth of science related to active galactic nuclei (AGN) and associated phenomena to be enabled by a mission with microcalorimeter energy resolution in the soft X-ray band, a large collecting area, and wide-field imaging. Such a mission, the Line Emission Mapper (LEM), has been proposed to NASA's 2023 Astrophysics Probe Explorer call. While the science pillars of the PI-led part of the mission focus on galaxy evolution, the PI-led LEM All-Sky Survey (LASS) and General Observer/Investigator opportunities will enable vital discoveries for AGN science in the critical soft X-ray band., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

NGC 4945 contains a well-known heavily obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) at its core, with prior reports of strong nuclear and off-nuclear neutral Fe K$\alpha$ emission due to the AGN activity. We report the discovery of very extended Fe K$\alpha$ emission with the XMM-Newton EPIC pn in a $\sim5$ kpc by $\sim10$ kpc region that is misaligned with the plane of the inclined optical galaxy disk by $\sim60$ degrees in projection. After a careful consideration of the crowded center of the galaxy and numerous unresolved hard X-ray sources present, we estimate that $\sim15$% of the Fe K$\alpha$ is extended on kpc-sized scales. The overall size and misalignment of the region follows an unusual pattern of radio polarization that is not typical of starbursts or normal disk galaxies but has been interpreted as possibly due to AGN activity. We suggest that the extended Fe K$\alpha$ emission arose from a period of AGN eruption several million years ago - a relic of a past AGN ejection episode., Comment: 24 pages including figures and tables, 12 figures, 3 tables. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations $<10$ kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and - for the first time - hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated ($\sim2''-5''$) dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating state-of-the-art physical torus models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. Hard X-ray spatially resolved observations of dual AGNs - accessible only to HEX-P - will hence transform our understanding of dual AGN in the nearby Universe., Comment: Under review for Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

The Line Emission Mapper (LEM) is an X-ray Probe with with spectral resolution ~2 eV FWHM from 0.2 to 2.5 keV and effective area >2,500 cm$^2$ at 1 keV, covering a 33 arcmin diameter Field of View with 15 arcsec angular resolution, capable of performing efficient scanning observations of very large sky areas and enabling the first high spectral resolution survey of the full sky. The LEM-All-Sky Survey (LASS) is expected to follow the success of previous all sky surveys such as ROSAT and eROSITA, adding a third dimension provided by the high resolution microcalorimeter spectrometer, with each 15 arcsec pixel of the survey including a full 1-2 eV resolution energy spectrum that can be integrated over any area of the sky to provide statistical accuracy. Like its predecessors, LASS will provide both a long-lasting legacy and open the door to the unknown, enabling new discoveries and delivering the baseline for unique GO studies. No other current or planned mission has the combination of microcalorimeter energy resolution and large grasp to cover the whole sky while maintaining good angular resolution and imaging capabilities. LASS will be able to probe the physical conditions of the hot phases of the Milky Way at multiple scales, from emission in the Solar system due to Solar Wind Charge eXchange, to the interstellar and circumgalactic media, including the North Polar Spur and the Fermi/eROSITA bubbles. It will measure velocities of gas in the inner part of the Galaxy and extract the emissivity of the Local Hot Bubble. By maintaining the original angular resolution, LASS will also be able to study classes of point sources through stacking. For classes with ~$10^4$ objects, it will provide the equivalent of 1 Ms of high spectral resolution data. We describe the technical specifications of LASS and highlight the main scientific objectives that will be addressed. One of the primary outstanding questions in extragalactic astronomy is the formation and early evolution of the supermassive black holes that are seen in nearly every massive galaxy. Low metallicity dwarf galaxies may offer the most representative local analogs to pristine early galaxies, making them a vital tool in probing black hole seed models through the study of the intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) possibly hosted therein, though these dwarf galaxies, and the IMBHs they may host, are typically not as well-studied in this context as their higher metallicity and higher mass counterparts. In this paper, we explore the X-ray properties of a sample of 37 low metallicity dwarf galaxies using archival XMM observations, and we compare the properties of this population against a representative sample of higher metallicity counterparts. We report the detection of ten sources with 0.3-10 keV luminosity in excess of $10^{40}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ within the low metallicity sample, which we highlight for follow-up as potential intermediate mass black hole candidates. Finally, we discuss the differing multi-wavelength scaling relations (e.g., $L_X - L_{W2}$, $L_X-SFR$) between the two galaxy populations, as well as the sample's $L_X$ as a function of metallicity., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ

Mergers of galaxies are a ubiquitous phenomenon in the Universe and represent a natural consequence of the ``bottom-up'' mass accumulation and galaxy evolution cosmological paradigm. It is generally accepted that the peak of AGN accretion activity occurs at nuclear separations of $\lesssim10$ kpc for major mergers. Here we present new NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations for a subsample of mid-IR preselected dual AGN candidates in an effort to better constrain the column densities along the line-of-sight for each system. Only one dual AGN candidate, J0841+0101, is detected as a single, unresolved source in the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR imaging, while the remaining three dual AGN candidates, J0122+0100, J1221+1137, and J1306+0735, are not detected with NuSTAR; if these non-detections are due to obscuration alone, these systems are consistent with being absorbed by column densities of log($N_{\rm{H}}/\rm{cm}^{-2}$) $\geq$ 24.9, 24.8, and 24.6, which are roughly consistent with previously inferred column densities in these merging systems. In the case of J0841+0101, the analysis of the 0.3-30 keV spectra reveal a line-of-sight column density of $N_{\rm{H}}\gtrsim10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, significantly larger than the column densities previously reported for this system and demonstrating the importance of the higher signal-to-noise XMM-Newton spectra and access to the $>10$ keV energies via NuSTAR. Though it is unclear if J0841+0101 truly hosts a dual AGN, these results are in agreement with the high obscuring columns expected in AGNs in late-stage mergers., Comment: 21 pages, 9 tables, 4 figures. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are our best laboratories for studying extreme super-Eddington accretion. Most studies of these objects are of relatively persistent sources, however there is growing evidence to suggest a large fraction of these sources are transient. Here we present a sample of five newly reported transient ULXs in the galaxies NGC 4945, NGC 7793 and M81 serendipitously discovered in Swift/XRT observations. Swift monitoring of these sources have provided well sampled lightcurves, allowing for us to model the lightcurves with the disk instability model of Hameury & Lasota (2020) which implies durations of 60-400 days and that the mass accretion rate through the disk is close to or greater than the Eddington rate. Of the three source regions with prior HST imaging, color magnitude diagrams of the potential stellar counterparts show varying ages of the possible stellar counterparts. Our estimation of the rates of these sources in these three galaxies is 0.4-1.3 year$^{-1}$. We find that while persistent ULXs dominate the high end of galaxy luminosity functions, the number of systems that produce ULX luminosities are likely dominated by transient sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Theoretical studies predict that the most significant growth of supermassive black holes occurs in late-stage mergers, coinciding with the manifestation of dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and both major and minor mergers are expected to be important for dual AGN growth. In fact, dual AGNs in minor mergers should be signposts for efficient minor merger-induced SMBH growth for both the more and less massive progenitor. We identified two candidate dual AGNs residing in apparent minor mergers with mass ratios of $\sim$1:7 and $\sim$1:30. SDSS fiber spectra show broad and narrow emission lines in the primary nuclei of each merger while only a narrow [O III] emission line and a broad and prominent H$\alpha$/[N II] complex is observed in the secondary nuclei. The FWHMs of the broad H$\alpha$ lines in the primary and secondary nuclei are inconsistent in each merger, suggesting that each nucleus in each merger hosts a Type 1 AGN. However, spatially-resolved LBT optical spectroscopy reveal rest-frame stellar absorption features, indicating the secondary sources are foreground stars and that the previously detected broad lines are likely the result of fiber spillover effects induced by the atmospheric seeing at the time of the SDSS observations. This study demonstrates for the first time that optical spectroscopic searches for Type 1/Type 1 pairs similarly suffer from fiber spillover effects as has been observed previously for Seyfert 2 dual AGN candidates. The Line Emission Mapper (LEM) is an X-ray Probe for the 2030s that will answer the outstanding questions of the Universe's structure formation. It will also provide transformative new observing capabilities for every area of astrophysics, and to heliophysics and planetary physics as well. LEM's main goal is a comprehensive look at the physics of galaxy formation, including stellar and black-hole feedback and flows of baryonic matter into and out of galaxies. These processes are best studied in X-rays, and emission-line mapping is the pressing need in this area. LEM will use a large microcalorimeter array/IFU, covering a 30x30' field with 10" angular resolution, to map the soft X-ray line emission from objects that constitute galactic ecosystems. These include supernova remnants, star-forming regions, superbubbles, galactic outflows (such as the Fermi/eROSITA bubbles in the Milky Way and their analogs in other galaxies), the Circumgalactic Medium in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and the Intergalactic Medium at the outskirts and beyond the confines of galaxies and clusters. LEM's 1-2 eV spectral resolution in the 0.2-2 keV band will make it possible to disentangle the faintest emission lines in those objects from the bright Milky Way foreground, providing groundbreaking measurements of the physics of these plasmas, from temperatures, densities, chemical composition to gas dynamics. While LEM's main focus is on galaxy formation, it will provide transformative capability for all classes of astrophysical objects, from the Earth's magnetosphere, planets and comets to the interstellar medium and X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies, AGN, and cooling gas in galaxy clusters. Using a series of 3D relativistic hydrodynamical simulations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we investigate how AGN power, a clumpy ISM structure, and AGN jet angle with respect to the galactic disk affect the morphology and content of the resulting galactic outflow. For low power AGN across three orders of magnitude of AGN luminosities ($10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) our simulations did not show significant changes to either the morphology or total mass of the outflow. Changing the angle of the AGN jet with respect to the galaxy did show small changes in the total outflow mass of a factor of 2-3. Jets perpendicular to the galactic disk were created hot single phase outflows, while jets close to parallel with the disk created the outflows were multi-phase with equal parts warm and hot, and significant cold gas. Overall The final morphology of low power AGN outflows depends primarily on how the jet impacts and interacts with large, dense clouds in the clumpy ISM. These clouds can disrupt, deflect, split, or suppress the jet preventing it from leaving the galactic disk as a coherent structure. But for simulations with AGN luminosities $> 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ the ISM played a minor role in determining the morphology of the outflow with an undisrupted jet leaving the disk. The final morphology of AGN outflows is different for low power AGNs vs. high power AGNs with the final morphology of low power AGN outflows dependent on the ISM structure within the first kpc surrounding the AGN., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, Accepted to ApJ

The majority of deaf children in the United States are born to hearing parents with limited prior exposure to American Sign Language (ASL). Our research involves creating and validating a mobile language tool called SMARTSign. The goal is to help hearing parents learn ASL in a way that fits seamlessly into their daily routine. Language immersion from birth is crucial to a child's language development. However, language immersion can be particularly challenging for hearing parents of deaf children to provide as they may have to overcome many difficulties while learning American Sign Language (ASL). We are in the process of creating a mobile application to help hearing parents learn ASL. To this end, we have interviewed members of our target population to gain understanding of their motivations and needs when learning sign language. We found that the most common motivation for parents learning ASL is better communication with their children. Parents are most interested in acquiring grammar knowledge through learning to read stories to their children. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)

We intend to create a mobile device-based system to help hearing parents learn sign language. The first step is to understand what level of detail (i.e., resolution) is necessary for novice signers to learn from video of signs. In this paper we present the results of a study designed to evaluate the ability of novices learning sign language to ascertain the details of a particular sign based on video presented on a mobile device. Four conditions were presented. Three conditions involve manipulation of video resolution (low, medium, and high). The fourth condition employs insets showing the sign handshapes along with the high resolution video. Subjects were tested on their ability to emulate the given sign over 80 signs commonly used between parents and their young children. Although participants noticed a reduction in quality in the low resolution condition, there was no significant effect of condition on ability to generate the sign. Sign difficulty had a significant correlation with ability to correctly reproduce the sign. Although the inset handshape condition did not improve the participants' ability to emulate the signs correctly, participant feedback provided insight into situations where insets would be more useful, as well as further suggestions to improve video intelligibility. Participants were able to reproduce even the most complex signs tested with relatively high accuracy. (Contains 10 figures and 2 tables.)

We present results from Chandra HETGS (250 ks over two epochs) and XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS (60 ks) observations of NGC 2110, which has been historically classified as a Narrow Emission Line Galaxy galaxy. Our results support the interpretation that the source is a Seyfert 2 viewed through a patchy absorber. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the source is best described by a power law of photon index $\Gamma$ ~1.7, modified by absorption from multiple layers of neutral material at a large distance from the central supermassive black hole. We report the strong detections of Fe K$\alpha$ and Si K$\alpha$ lines, which are marginally resolved with the Chandra HETGS, and we constrain the emission radius of the fluorescing material to >1 pc. There is some evidence for modest additional broadening at the base of the narrow Fe K$\alpha$ core with a velocity ~4500 km s$^{-1}$. We find tentative evidence for ionized emission (O VIII Ly $\alpha$, an O VIII RRC feature, and possibly a Ne IX forbidden line) in the Chandra MEG and XMM-Newton RGS spectra, which could be associated with the known extended X-ray emission that lies ~160 pc from the nucleus. We suggest that the $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ partially covering absorber originates in broad-line region clouds in the vicinity of the AGN, and that the $3\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ coverer is likely to have a more distant origin and have a flattened geometry in order to allow the small-scale radio jet to escape., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. Using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Seyfert 1 and 1.2 data spanning 9 years, we study correlations between X-ray spectral features. The sample consists of 350 time-resolved spectra from 12 Seyfert 1 and 1.2 galaxies. Each spectrum is fitted to a model with an intrinsic powerlaw X-ray spectrum produced close to the central black hole that is reprocessed and absorbed by material around the black hole. To test the robustness of our results, we performed Monte Carlo simulations of the spectral sample. We find a complex relationship between the iron line equivalent width (EW) and the underlying power law index (Gamma). The data reveal a correlation between Gamma and EW which turns over at Gamma <~ 2, but finds a weak anti-correlation for steeper photon indices. We propose that this relationship is driven by dilution of a disk spectrum (which includes the narrow iron line) by a beamed jet component and, hence, could be used as a diagnostic of jet-dominance. In addition, our sample shows a strong correlation between the reflection fraction (R) and Gamma, but we find that it is likely the result of modeling degeneracies. We also see the X-ray Baldwin effect (an anti-correlation between the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity and EW) for the sample as a whole, but not for the individual galaxies and galaxy types., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 14 pages

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can be probed by at different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum: e.g., radio observations reveal the nature of their relativistic jets and their magnetic fields, and complementarily, X-ray observations give insight into the changes in the accretion disk flows. Here we present an overview over the AGN research and results from an ongoing multi-band campaign on the active galaxy NGC1052. We present results from new Chandra and archival HST and VLA imaging observations of the circumnuclear extended emission in the nearby Type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110. We find resolved soft-band X-ray emission 4'' (~160 pc) north of the nucleus, which is spatially coincident with [OIII] emission, but lies just beyond the northern edge of the radio jet in the source. We find that shock-heating of multi-phase gas clouds can successfully account for this extended emission, although we cannot rule out alternative models, such as the scattering of nuclear radiation by ionized material, or pure photoionization from the nucleus. In addition, we detect kpc-scale (~30'') extended soft-band X-ray emission south of the nucleus. Finally, we compare our results for NGC 2110 with the prototypical Type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, and suggest that different physical processes could produce extended circumnuclear X-ray emission in Seyfert galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. We have discovered a correlation between the X-ray absorbing column densities within Seyfert galaxies and the relative alignment between the central engines and their host galactic disks. This correlation carries several implications for Seyfert unification models. (1) In addition to small-scale circumnuclear absorbers, there are absorbing systems associated with the host galactic plane that are capable of obscuring the broad line region emission. (2) The misalignment between the central engine axis and that of the host galaxy arises on intermediate scales between these absorbers. We found several extranuclear (r >~ 3") X-ray nebulae within 40" (6.3 kpc at 32.5 Mpc) of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992. The net X-ray luminosity from the extranuclear sources is ~2-3 E39 erg/s (0.3-8.0 keV). The X-ray core itself (r <~ 1") is positioned at 9:45:41.95 -14:19:34.8 (J2000) and has a remarkably simple power-law spectrum with photon index Gamma=1.86 and Nh=7E21 /cm2. The near-nuclear (3" <~ r <~ 18") Chandra spectrum is best modelled by three components: (1) a direct AGN component with Gamma fixed at 1.86, (2) cold Compton reflection of the AGN component, and (3) a 0.5 keV low-abundance (Z < 0.03 Zsolar) "thermal plasma," with ~10% of the flux of either of the first two components. The X-ray luminosity of the 3rd component (the "soft excess") is ~1.4E40 erg/s, or ~5X that of all of the detected extranuclear X-ray sources. We suggest that most (~75-80%) of the soft excess emission originates from 1" < r < 3", which is not imaged in our observation due to severe CCD pile-up. We also require the cold reflector to be positioned at least 1" (158 pc) from the nucleus, since there is no reflection component in the X-ray core spectrum. Much of the extranuclear X-ray emission is coincident with radio structures (nuclear radio bubbles and large-scale radio features), and its soft X-ray luminosity is generally consistent with luminosities expected from a starburst-driven wind (with the starburst scaled from L_FIR). However, the AGN in NGC 2992 seems equally likely to power the galactic wind in that object. We present a study of the intrinsic X-ray and far-ultraviolet absorption in the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 279 using simultaneous observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We also present FUSE observations made at three additional epochs. We detect the Fe K-alpha emission line in the Chandra spectrum, and its flux is consistent with the low X-ray continuum flux level of Mrk 279 at the time of the observation. Due to low signal-to-noise ratios in the Chandra spectrum, no O VII or O VIII absorption features are observable in the Chandra data, but the UV spectra reveal strong and complex absorption from HI and high-ionization species such as O VI, N V, and C IV, as well as from low-ionization species such as C III, N III, C II, and N II in some velocity components. The far-UV spectral coverage of the FUSE data provides information on high-order Lyman series absorption, which we use to calculate the optical depths and line and continuum covering fractions in the intrinsic HI absorbing gas in a self-consistent fashion. The UV continuum flux of Mrk 279 decreases by a factor of ~7.5 over the time spanning these observations and we discuss the implications of the response of the absorption features to this change. From arguments based on the velocities, profile shapes, covering fractions and variability of the UV absorption, we conclude that some of the absorption components, particularly those showing prominent low-ionization lines, are likely associated with the host galaxy of Mrk 279, and possibly with its interaction with a close companion galaxy, while the remainder arises in a nuclear outflow., Comment: To appear in 2004 May ApJS; double-column format; 58 pages, incl. 29 figures, 9 tables; minor changes to text

Chandra observations of the core of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 reveal a heavily absorbed source of hard X-rays embedded within the nuclear starburst region. The source has an unabsorbed, 2 to 10 keV luminosity of >=10^39 erg/s and photoionizes the surrounding gas. We observe this source through a dusty torus with a neutral absorbing column density of NH ~ 2x10^23 cm^-2. The torus is hundreds of pc across and collimates the starburst-driven nuclear outflow. We suggest that the ionizing source is an intermediate-mass black hole or a weakly accreting supermassive black hole, which may signal the beginnings or endings of AGN activity., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. The X-ray properties of 15 nearby (v<3,000 km/s) galaxies that possess AGN and/or starbursts are discussed. Two-thirds have nuclear extended emission on scales from ~0.5 to ~1.5 kpc that is either clearly associated with a nuclear outflow or morphologically resembles an outflow. Galaxies that are AGN-dominated tend to have linear structures while starburst-dominated galaxies tend to have plume-like structures. Significant X-ray absorption is present in the starburst regions, indicating that a circumnuclear starburst is sufficient to block an AGN at optical wavelengths. Galaxies with starburst activity possess more X-ray point sources within their central kpc than non-starbursts. Many of these sources are more luminous than typical X-ray binaries. The Chandra results are discussed in terms of the starburst-AGN connection, a revised unified model for AGN, and possible evolutionary scenarios., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures (5 color). Arcsecond-resolution X-ray imaging of the nucleus of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 with Chandra reveals a well-collimated, strongly limb-brightened, kiloparsec-scale conical outflow from the central starburst region. The outflow is very similar in morphology to the known H-alpha outflow cone, on scales down to <= 20 pc. This provides, for the first time, robust evidence that both X-ray and H-alpha emission come from low volume filling factor regions of interaction between the fast energetic wind of SN-ejecta and the denser ambient interstellar medium (ISM), and not from the wind fluid itself. We provide estimates of the (observationally and theoretically important) filling factor of the X-ray emitting gas, of between 4 and 40 per cent, consistent with an upper limit of ~40 per cent based directly on the observed limb-brightened morphology of the outflow. Only <= 20 per cent of the observed X-ray emission can come from the volume-filling, metal-enriched, wind fluid itself. Spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the soft diffuse thermal X-ray emission reveals that the predominant source of spectral variation along the outflow cones is due to strong variation in the absorption, on scales of < 60 pc, there being little change in the characteristic temperature of the emission. We show that these observations are easily explained by, and fully consistent with, the standard model of a superwind driven by a starburst of NGC 253's observed power. If these results are typical of all starburst-driven winds, then we do not directly see all the energy and gas (in particular the hot metal-enriched gas) transported out of galaxies by superwinds, even in X-ray emission., Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal. 10 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the 0.5-10 keV spectra of six Seyfert 2 galaxies observed with the X-ray satellite ASCA: Mrk 3, Mrk 348, Mrk 1210, Mrk 477, NGC 7212, and Was 49b. These galaxies were selected based on their possession of optical polarized broad lines. In the 2-10 keV band, their spectra are heavily absorbed, with 2-10 keV absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities ranging from 10^{42} to 10^{43} erg/s. The observed X-ray emission is generally only about one tenth that predicted based on their known infrared and H_beta luminosities. This apparent X-ray weakness can be understood if a considerable fraction of the nuclear activity is completely blocked from view by thick matter along our line of sight to the nucleus. All of these galaxies possess significant soft X-ray emission whose origin appears to be scattered light from their nuclear emission. Based on this hypothesis, we estimate a typical scattering efficiency for X-rays to be about 10%. This efficiency is larger than the few % found for ordinary Seyfert 2 galaxies with no report of optical polarized broad lines. A large scattering efficiency is best explained by an apparent weakness of the hard X-ray luminosity rather than unusually strong scattered light in the soft band. We examine the unusual Fe-Kalpha line profile in MCG-6-30-15 observed by ASCA during a deep minimum in the source intensity. The intense red wing and depressed blue wing of the line have been interpreted as evidence for extreme gravitational redshifts in terms of emission from within six gravitational radii of a black hole. We find that the data do not uniquely support this interpretation and can be equally well explained by occultation of the continuum source and the putative line-emitting accretion disk, which we offer as an alternative hypothesis. Two problems with previous modeling were that the equivalent width of the line during the deep minimum was required to be unusually large (> 1 keV) and the line intensity was thought to increase as the source became dim. The occultation model does not suffer from these problems. Our results serve to highlight the hazards of over-interpreting observational results which have low statistical significance, to the extent that theoretical implications can become generally accepted when the data do not provide a strong case for them., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
