The ephydroid family Diastatidae is recorded for the first time from Brazil. A new species, Diastata fachini Costa, Pirani & Mathis, sp. nov. which was collected from the Atlantic Forest, is described. The description is based on an adult male and female and includes photographs and detailed illustrations.

The ongoing usefulness of Table 1 in the Zootaxa paper Comprehensive taxonomic, faunistic, biological, and geographic inventory and analysis of the Sciomyzidae (Diptera: Acalyptratae) of the Delmarva region and nearby states in eastern North America (Murphy et al. 2018) is compromised by impermanent literature-citation numbering. To secure Table 1 as a permanent resource for the study of Sciomyzidae, provided herein are bibliographic data for the 59 works cited in that paper by Bibliography of Sciomyzidae (“ScioBiblio”) number only. Details are provided regarding the history of the ScioBiblio and plans to reorganize and publish it.

We describe Neozealides to accommodate two endemic species from New Zealand that were previously placed in the shore-fly genus Hyadina Haliday. Although similar to Hyadina, both species are more closely related to the Hyadina and Philygria groups of genera (Zatwarnicki & Ryczko 2014) than they are to species within Hyadina. To document these discoveries, we revise both species, placing them in Neozealides. Emphasis is given to structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. Detailed locality data and distribution maps for both species are provided. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera, the tribe Hyadinini is diagnosed and a key to genera from New Zealand is provided.

Two genera of the shore-fly tribe Hyadinini, Hyadina Haliday and Parahyadina Tonnoir & Malloch, are revised, and all species treated, save P. lacustris Tonnoir & Malloch, are described for the first time. The phylogenetic position of both genera within Hyadinini is presented along with confirming, morphological evidence. The New Zealand fauna of Hyadina is now limited to the single new species H. breva, and Parahyadina is expanded from being a monotypic genus based on P. lacustris to also include the following 9 endemic new species: P. angusta, P. atra, P. bifurcata, P. bulla, P. debilis, P. edmistoni, P. hennigi, P. irwini, and P. latistylis. For both genera, emphasis is given to structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. Detailed locality data and distribution maps for all species are provided, and structures of the male terminalia are fully illustrated. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera, the tribe Hyadinini is diagnosed and a key to genera from New Zealand is provided.

Study of all flies (Diptera) collected for one year from a four-hectare (150 x 266 meter) patch of cloud forest at 1,600 meters above sea level at Zurquí de Moravia, San José Province, Costa Rica (hereafter referred to as Zurquí), revealed an astounding 4,332 species. This amounts to more than half the number of named species of flies for all of Central America. Specimens were collected with two Malaise traps running continuously and with a wide array of supplementary collecting methods for three days of each month. All morphospecies from all 73 families recorded were fully curated by technicians before submission to an international team of 59 taxonomic experts for identification. Overall, a Malaise trap on the forest edge captured 1,988 species or 51% of all collected dipteran taxa (other than of Phoridae, subsampled only from this and one other Malaise trap). A Malaise trap in the forest sampled 906 species. Of other sampling methods, the combination of four other Malaise traps and an intercept trap, aerial/hand collecting, 10 emergence traps, and four CDC light traps added the greatest number of species to our inventory. This complement of sampling methods was an effective combination for retrieving substantial numbers of species of Diptera. Comparison of select sampling methods (considering 3,487 species of non-phorid Diptera) provided further details regarding how many species were sampled by various methods. Comparison of species numbers from each of two permanent Malaise traps from Zurquí with those of single Malaise traps at each of Tapantí and Las Alturas, 40 and 180 km distant from Zurquí respectively, suggested significant species turnover. Comparison of the greater number of species collected in all traps from Zurquí did not markedly change the degree of similarity between the three sites, although the actual number of species shared did increase. Comparisons of the total number of named and unnamed species of Diptera from four hectares at Zurquí is equivalent to 51% of all flies named from Central America, greater than all the named fly fauna of Colombia, equivalent to 14% of named Neotropical species and equal to about 2.7% of all named Diptera worldwide. Clearly the number of species of Diptera in tropical regions has been severely underestimated and the actual number may surpass the number of species of Coleoptera. Various published extrapolations from limited data to estimate total numbers of species of larger taxonomic categories (e.g., Hexapoda, Arthropoda, Eukaryota, etc.) are highly questionable, and certainly will remain uncertain until we have more exhaustive surveys of all and diverse taxa (like Diptera) from multiple tropical sites. Morphological characterization of species in inventories provides identifications placed in the context of taxonomy, phylogeny, form, and ecology. DNA barcoding species is a valuable tool to estimate species numbers but used alone fails to provide a broader context for the species identified.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-12-01 Estimations of tropical insect diversity generally suffer from lack of known groups or faunas against which extrapolations can be made, and have seriously underestimated the diversity of some taxa. Here we report the intensive inventory of a four-hectare tropical cloud forest in Costa Rica for one year, which yielded 4332 species of Diptera, providing the first verifiable basis for diversity of a major group of insects at a single site in the tropics. In total 73 families were present, all of which were studied to the species level, providing potentially complete coverage of all families of the order likely to be present at the site. Even so, extrapolations based on our data indicate that with further sampling, the actual total for the site could be closer to 8000 species. Efforts to completely sample a site, although resource-intensive and time-consuming, are needed to better ground estimations of world biodiversity based on limited sampling. Species of the shore-fly genus Gymnoclasiopa Hendel from the New World are revised, including G. grecorum, sp. n. (Alaska. Juneau: Gastineau Channel, Thane Road (S Juneau; 58°16.9’N, 134°22.4’W)) and G. matanuska, sp. n. (Alaska. Matanuska-Susitna: Palmer (Matanuska River; 61°36.5’N, 149°04.1’W)). We also clarify the status of previously described species, including those now discovered to have Holarctic distributions and/or for which sexual dimorphism was not appreciated and the species was described twice, including G. montana (Cresson) as a syn. n. of G. bohemanni (Becker). Two species, G. bella (Mathis), comb. n., and G. chiapas (Mathis), comb. n., are transferred from Ditrichophora to Gymnoclasiopa, and D. cana Cresson rev. stat. and D. canifrons Cresson stat. rev. are returned to Ditrichophora, the genus in which Cresson originally described them. A neotype is designated for G. tacoma to stabilize the nomenclature of this species. The two excluded species, D. cana and D. canifrons, are diagnosed and distributional data are also provided. For all known New World species of Gymnoclasiopa, structures of the male terminalia are described for the first time and are fully illustrated. The Neotropical genera and species of the tribe Ephydrini are revised and include nine genera and 33 species. Of the nine genera, Setacera Cresson, Cirrula Cresson, Dimecoenia Cresson, Paracoenia Cresson and Ephydra Fallén are mostly temperate in distribution, primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. The other four genera, which are exclusively Neotropical, include two, Austrocoenia and Notiocoenia, that were treated previously in the tribe Scatellini, and two recently described genera: Paraephydra (type species: Paraephydra freitasi (Oliveira)) and Neoephydra (type species: Neoephydra araucaria Mathis). New species described herein are: Neoephydra neotropica (Chile), N. dasycephala (Argentina and Peru), N. mallonota (Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile), N. shewelli (Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile), N. inca (Argentina, Bolivia, Peru), N. penai (Chile) and N. trichina (Argentina and Chile). New synonyms are (cited in their original combinations): Ephydra densepilosa Hendel = E. ciligena Rondani, Dimecoenia grumanni Oliveira = E. ciligena Rondani, D. coltaensis Cresson = D. zurcheri Hendel, D. carrerai Oliveira = D. zurcheri Hendel, D. lopesi = E. ciligena Rondani, D. travassosi Mello and Oliveira = E. prionoptera Thomson. A neotype is designated for E. caesia Wulp, and the following lectotype designations have also been made to better stabilize nomenclature (here cited in their original combination): Ephydra chilensis Macquart, Ephydra densepilosa Hendel, Ephydra pravoneura Hendel, Ephydra prionoptera Thomson, and Dimecoenia zurcheri Hendel. Dimecoenia venteli Oliveira is listed as a species inquirenda, as the type series includes only female specimens that we cannot presently recognize. Although the genera and subgenera are fairly easily distinguished, the included species are frequently difficult to separate, and we have generally relied on characters of the male terminalia to determine a species identity. Illustrations of male terminalia and distribution maps are included for each species and keys to all taxa have been provided.

The Neotropical shore-fly genus Peltopsilopa Hendel is revised and now includes three species: P. acuta n.sp.; P. anisotomoides (Karsch), new combination; and P. schwarzi Cresson. A fourth species name, P. aspistes Hendel, is recognized as a junior synonym of P. anisotomoides (Karsch). We confirm that Peltopsilopa is closely related to Cressonomyia Arnaud and that the genus is in the tribe Psilopini, subfamily Discomyzinae. We provide a revised generic diagnosis and key to South American genera of Psilopini to facilitate identification of Peltopsilopa. The included species descriptions are extensively documented with illustrations, photographs, and distribution map.

For perspective and to facilitate genus-group and species-group recognition, the family Periscelididae and subfamily Stenomicrinae are diagnosed and for the latter, a key to included genera is provided.

Aedes dufouri Hamon, heretofore placed in the subgenus Levua Stone and Bohart, is transferred back to the subgenus Ochlerotatus Lynch Arribalzaga, where it is placed in a new monotypic lineage, the dufouri group, based on a morphological assessment of characters of specimens, including the type species, Aedes (Levua) suvae Stone and Bohart, 1944, from Suva, Fiji. Aedes fryeri (Theobald) was previously removed from the subgenus Levua (Huang et al. 2010). Thus, no members of the subgenus Levua (genus Aedes Meigen) are now known to occur in the Afrotropical Region. The female and the male genitalia of Ae. dufouri are redescribed and illustrated, and the dufouri group is diagnosed. Some morphological characters of adult males and females, as well as larvae, of the subgenera Ochlerotatus and Levua (genus Aedes Meigen) are tabulated.

The shore-fly genus Oedenopiforma Cogan is reviewed, including new information on Oedenopiforma argentea (distribution), Oedenopiforma javana (comb. nov. and O. orientalis syn. nov.), and Oedenopiforma vockerothi (sp. nov. from United Arab Emirates). Structures of the male terminalia of these three species, a diagnosis of the genus, and a key to the included genera of Dryxini and species of Oedenopiforma are presented. Species of the nivea group (genus Ditrichophora Cresson) are revised. The group now includes four species of which one, D. gulkana (Alaska and Mongolia), is newly described. The group is now known to have a Holarctic distribution with two species, D. gulkana and D. nivea, being the first reported from the Nearctic Region. Another Asian species, D. brunnicosa, previously placed in Diclasiopa, is transferred to this group (genus Ditrichophora) and is also reported from Mongolia. To facilitate identification of these rare species, we have included diagnoses of the tribe, genus, and species group and have also provided an annotated key to Holarctic genera of the tribe Discocerinini and to species of the nivea group within Ditrichophora. We also provide the first illustrations of male terminalia for all included species.

Axysta austra sp. n. from Australia, A. indica sp. n. from India, and A. nikita sp. n. from Thailand are described. The synonymy of A. americana Clausen with A. nigrifacies (Miyagi) is proposed. The genus Axysta is recorded from the Australasian and Oriental Regions for the first time. Keys to genera in Hyadinini and species of Axysta are provided, as are illustrations of all species.

New species of shore flies (Diptera: Ephydridae) from the Delmarva States are described, and taxonomic clarifications are made. The six new species are (type locality in parentheses): Discocerina delmarva (Virginia. Stafford: Aquia Harbour, Lions Park), Hydrochasma aquia (Virginia. Stafford: Aquia Harbour, Lions Park), Hydrochasma avanae (Utah. Grand: Swasey Beach (N Green River; shore of Green River; 1255 m), Hydrochasma garvinorum (Virginia. Rappahannock: Hazel River (NW Culpeper; 171 m)), Allotrichoma deonieri (Virginia. Spotsylvania: Rappahannock River), and Hydrellia toma (Virginia. Fairfax: Great Falls (Clay Pond)). The taxonomic changes are as follows: Psilopa obscuripes Loew is the correct name for “P. compta” of New World authors, nec Meigen; Discocerina parva Loew is confirmed as a junior synonym of Discocerina obscurella (Fallen), and the identification of the latter species is clarified with detailed illustrations and description of structures of the male terminalia.

The internal female reproductive tract of Risa is characterized by a pair of short spermathecal ducts with no spermathecae, paired short accessory glands, and a large thimble-shaped strongly sclerotized ventral receptacle. This condition is identical with that in the ground plan of Ephydridae but differs from that of their next relatives, i.e., Camillidae and Diastatidae, regarding the shape of the ventral receptacle. It therefore corroborates the close relationship of Risa with Ephydridae either as its sister taxon or within that family.

Species of the shore-fly genus Glenanthe Haliday from New Mexico are reviewed, including description of G. buchananorum, new species (New Mexico. Chavas: Roswell (9 km E; 33°23.8′N, 104°24′W; Pecos River)). Other species reported from New Mexico are G. caribea and G. salina. A revised key to the New World species is presented.

The genus Oedenopiforma Cogan is reported from the Oriental Region for the first time. Oedenopiforma orientalis, n. sp., is described from China. An updated key to the world species of the genus is presented.

All known shore-fly species (5) of the genus Philotelma Becker are revised, including P. tecopa, new species (California. Inyo: Tecopa Hot Spring (36°52.7'N, 116°13.9'W)). Philotelma is only known from the Northern Hemisphere, and the included species are generally more widespread than previously known. With discovery that some species are more widespread and correction of the identification of others, the following new synonymies are proposed: P. alaskense Cresson = P. defectum (Haliday) and P. strandi Duda and P. tamarani Zatwarnicki & Báez = P. parvum (Kramer). The Afrotropical species, Philotelma mirabilis Canzoneri & Meneghini, is transferred to the genus Lamproscatella Hendel (new combination). A lectotype is designated for Ephydra defecta Haliday. For perspective and to facilitate identification, a key to the genera of Scatellini is provided. All species are illustrated and distribution maps are also provided.

Species of the shore-fly genus Hecamedoides Hendel from the Nearctic Region are revised, including description of H. lattini, new species (Virginia. Stafford: Falmouth (38°19.2′N, 77°28.1′W; Rappahannock River; 9 m). To provide context and also to facilitate identification, diagnoses are provided for the tribe Discocerinini and genus in addition to a key to the genera and species, H. lattini and H. unispinosus, occurring in the New World. Diagnostic characters, especially of the male terminalia, are illustrated, and distribution maps are also provided.

The three known species of the genus Tethina Haliday (T. albula (Loew), T. insulans Curran, and T. spinulosa Coe) from the Galapagos Islands are reviewed with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are illustrated (no males are known for T. insulans Curran). Tethina albula and T. spinulosa are reported for the first time from the Islands.

Twenty-nine species of shore flies in 17 genera have been collected and identified from Plummers Island. Although relatively diverse, the shore-fly fauna known from the Island represents only 21% of the species known from the surrounding states, indicating that we probably are dealing with sampling error and that many more species are likely to be found there.

Ten species of the genus Tethina Haliday from western North America are reviewed with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are illustrated. One new species (type locality in parenthesis) is described: Tethina sasakawai (California. San Diego: Camp Pendleton; 33°13.3′N, 117°24.5′W, beach). Tethina thula Sasakawa, which was described from specimens collected in Japan, is reported from Alaska. Four new synonymies are proposed: Rhicnoessa denudata Melander and Rhicnoessa lavendula Melander = Rhicnoessa angustipennis Melander; Tethina woodi Foster and Tethina steyskali Foster = Rhicnoessa milichioides Melander. Lectotypes are designated for the following five species' names: Tethina angustifrons Melander, Rhicnoessa angustipennis Melander, R. denudata Melander, R. lavendula Melander, and R. horripilans Melander. All species for which males are known are illustrated and distribution maps are provided.

A new species of Eremomusca, E. wakii, is described from specimens collected in Japan (Ayase City; 35°25.9′N, 139°25.9′E). For perspective, a diagnosis for Eremomusca is provided, and to facilitate identification a key to species of the genus, as well as figures of the head, thorax, abdomen, and wings, are provided.

Species of Canacidae sensu lato, including the subfamilies Canacinae, Pelomyiinae, and Tethininae, from the Delmarva states are revised. Included are nine species in six genera. Taxonomic categories from family to species are diagnosed and appropriate synonymy, illustrations, maps, and information on the natural history are provided for each species. A lectotype is designated for Rhicnoessa parvula Loew. Anthomyza cinerea Williston, 1896 and Rhicnoessa bermudaensis Melander, 1952 are determined to be conspecific with Rhicnoessa willistoni Melander, 1913 with the latter being the senior synonym.

The four Palearctic species of the shore-fly genus Discomyza Meigen are revised, including the description of an undescribed species. The undescribed species, D. baechlii, is found at higher elevations mainly in Austria and Switzerland (type locality: Graubünden: Ausserferrera-Cresta (1300-1670 m; 46°28'N, 9°31'E). Three species, D. baechlii, D. incurva, and D. maritima, form a monophyletic species group; the fourth species, D. maculipennis, has only been found in Japan in the Palearctic region and is undoubtedly an introduction from the Oriental region. Lectotypes are designated for: Discomyza amabilis Kertész, Discomyza pelagica Frauenfeld and Psilopa incurva Fallén.

Species of Mimapsilopa from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where six new species were discovered and herein are diagnosed and described. To facilitate identification of species, we have included a diagnosis of the tribe Discomyzini and of Mimapsilopa and have also provided an annotated key to the New World genera of the tribe. We have also provided photos of representative specimens, illustrations of structures of the male terminalia and a distribution map for all included species.

Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all extant multicellular European terrestrial and freshwater animals and their geographical distribution at the level of countries and major islands (east of the Urals and excluding the Caucasus region). The Fauna Europaea project comprises about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. Fauna Europaea represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing taxonomic specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many user communities in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. The Diptera-Brachycera is one of the 58 Fauna Europaea major taxonomic groups, and data have been compiled by a network of 55 specialists.Within the two-winged insects (Diptera), the Brachycera constitute a monophyletic group, which is generally given rank of suborder. The Brachycera may be classified into the probably paraphyletic 'lower brachyceran grade' and the monophyletic Eremoneura. The latter contains the Empidoidea, the Apystomyioidea with a single Nearctic species, and the Cyclorrhapha, which in turn is divided into the paraphyletic 'aschizan grade' and the monophyletic Schizophora. The latter is traditionally divided into the paraphyletic 'acalyptrate grade' and the monophyletic Calyptratae. Our knowledge of the European fauna of Diptera-Brachycera varies tremendously among families, from the reasonably well known hoverflies (Syrphidae) to the extremely poorly known scuttle flies (Phoridae). There has been a steady growth in our knowledge of European Diptera for the last two centuries, with no apparent slow down, but there is a shift towards a larger fraction of the new species being found among the families of the nematoceran grade (lower Diptera), which due to a larger number of small-sized species may be considered as taxonomically more challenging.Most of Europe is highly industrialised and has a high human population density, and the more fertile habitats are extensively cultivated. This has undoubtedly increased the extinction risk for numerous species of brachyceran flies, yet with the recent re-discovery of Thyreophora cynophila (Panzer), there are no known cases of extinction at a European level. However, few national Red Lists have extensive information on Diptera.For the Diptera-Brachycera, data from 96 families containing 11,751 species are included in this paper.

The species of Australimyza Harrison are revised and the saprophagous larvae are described for the first time. The phylogenetic analysis revealed two species groups and one ungrouped species. One species group is distributed in New Zealand and associated subantarctic islands; all other species occur in Australia. Four new species, A. glandulifera, A. kaikoura, A. mcalpinei and A. victoria, are described, A. anisotomae is synonymized with A. australensis and a neotype is designated for the latter species. A lectotype is designated for A. macquariensis.

The South American rice miner, Hydrellia wirthi Korytkowski (Diptera: Ephydridae), a recently discovered, invasive pest of rice, Oryza sativa L., is reported from southeastern United States (Louisiana and Texas). A detailed description and diagnosis with illustrations and photographs are provided to facilitate identification, along with descriptions of its damage as a miner in rice whorls, stems, and leaves. The localities where this invasive species has been found in Louisiana and Texas are provided.

Scatellini was proposed by Wirth & Stone, 1956 and currently includes 242 described species in nine genera­. The tribe has representatives in all biogeographic regions and about 70 species occur in the Neotropical Region. Prior to this study, only two species were recorded from Brazil: Scatella obscura and Limnellia itatiaia. In this paper, species of Scatellini from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where six new species have been discovered and are described herein: Scatella praia, S. plaumanni, S. rara, Scatophila darrowae, S. dianneae, and S. prainha. To facilitate identification of the tribe and included genera and species, we have included diagnoses of these taxa and have also provided an annotated key to the Neotropical genera in Scatellini. We have also provided illustrations of structures of the male terminalia of all included species of the genus Scatophila.

Two species of Discomyza Meigen occur in the New World, one, D. u-signata Cresson, naturally and the other, D. maculipennis (Wiedemann), apparently as an introduction. These species are revised and their malacophagous breeding habits are documented. The species treatments include the first detailed descriptions and illustrations of structures from the male terminalia, lectotype designations for Notiphila maculipennis Wiedemann and its New World synonym (D. balioptera Loew), as well as phylogenetic and biogeographic information, including maps. Although congeners, these two species are apparently not closely related, and their occurrence in the New World is independent of each other. D. maculipennis has a biogeographic connection with the Orient, and D. u-signata is linked with a group of Afrotropical species, D. eritrea Cresson specifically.

The genus Tronamyia is described in the tribe Lipochaetini (subfamily Gymnomyzinae) with Asmeringa lindsleyi Sturtevant & Wheeler (new combination) as its type species. The type species had previously been listed as an unplaced species in the tribe Atissini (subfamily Hydrelliinae). In a phylogenetic analysis of the tribe Lipochaetini, Tronamyia is the sister group of Lipochaeta Coquillett, a genus that also occurs along maritime beaches or inland saline or alkaline playas of the New World.
