JWST/NIRCam obtained high angular-resolution (0.05-0.1''), deep near-infrared 1--5 micron imaging of Supernova (SN) 1987A taken 35 years after the explosion. In the NIRCam images, we identify: 1) faint H2 crescents, which are emissions located between the ejecta and the equatorial ring, 2) a bar, which is a substructure of the ejecta, and 3) the bright 3-5 micron continuum emission exterior to the equatorial ring. The emission of the remnant in the NIRCam 1-2.3 micron images is mostly due to line emission, which is mostly emitted in the ejecta and in the hot spots within the equatorial ring. In contrast, the NIRCam 3-5 micron images are dominated by continuum emission. In the ejecta, the continuum is due to dust, obscuring the centre of the ejecta. In contrast, in the ring and exterior to the ring, synchrotron emission contributes a substantial fraction to the continuum. Dust emission contributes to the continuum at outer spots and diffuse emission exterior to the ring, but little within the ring. This shows that dust cooling and destruction time scales are shorter than the synchrotron cooling time scale, and the time scale of hydrogen recombination in the ring is even longer than the synchrotron cooling time scale. With the advent of high sensitivity and high angular resolution images provided by JWST/NIRCam, our observations of SN 1987A demonstrate that NIRCam opens up a window to study particle-acceleration and shock physics in unprecedented details, probed by near-infrared synchrotron emission, building a precise picture of how a SN evolves., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 18 pages

One of the surprising early findings with JWST has been the discovery of a strong "roll-over" or a softening of the absorption edge of Ly$\alpha$ in a large number of galaxies at ($z\gtrsim 6$), in addition to systematic offsets from photometric redshift estimates and fundamental galaxy scaling relations. This has been interpreted as damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA) wings from high column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), signifying major gas accretion events in the formation of these galaxies. To explore this new phenomenon systematically, we assemble the JWST/NIRSpec PRImordial gas Mass AssembLy (PRIMAL) legacy survey of 494 galaxies at $z=5.5-13.4$. We characterize this benchmark sample in full and spectroscopically derive the galaxy redshifts, metallicities, star-formation rates, and ultraviolet slopes. We define a new diagnostic, the Ly$\alpha$ damping parameter $D_{\rm Ly\alpha}$ to measure and quantify the Ly$\alpha$ emission strength, HI fraction in the IGM, or local HI column density for each source. The JWST-PRIMAL survey is based on the spectroscopic DAWN JWST Archive (DJA-Spec). All the software, reduced spectra, and spectroscopically derived quantities and catalogs are made publicly available in dedicated repositories. The fraction of strong galaxy DLAs are found to be in the range $65-95\%$ at $z>5.5$. The fraction of strong Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) is found to increase with decreasing redshift, in qualitative agreement with previous observational results, and are predominantly associated with low-metallicity and UV faint galaxies. By contrast, strong DLAs are observed in galaxies with a variety of intrinsic physical properties. Our results indicate that strong DLAs likely reflect a particular early assembly phase of reionization-era galaxies, at which point they are largely dominated by pristine HI gas accretion. Early galaxy formation, initiated by the dark matter and gas assembly, evolves through frequent mergers and feedback processes into dynamically hot, chaotic structures. In contrast, dynamically cold, smooth rotating disks have been observed in massive evolved galaxies merely 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang, suggesting rapid morphological and dynamical evolution in the early Universe. Probing this evolution mechanism necessitates studies of young galaxies, yet efforts have been hindered by observational limitations in both sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here we report high-resolution observations of a strongly lensed and quintuply imaged, low-luminosity, young galaxy at $z=6.072$ (dubbed the Cosmic Grapes), 930 million years after the Big Bang. Magnified by gravitational lensing, the galaxy is resolved into at least 15 individual star-forming clumps with effective radii of $r_{\rm e}\simeq$ 10--60 parsec (pc), which dominate $\simeq$ 70\% of the galaxy's total flux. The cool gas emission unveils a smooth, underlying rotating disk characterized by a high rotational-to-random motion ratio and a gravitationally unstable state (Toomre $Q \simeq$ 0.2--0.3), with high surface gas densities comparable to local dusty starbursts with $\simeq10^{3-5}$ $M_{\odot}$/pc$^{2}$. These gas properties suggest that the numerous star-forming clumps are formed through disk instabilities with weak feedback effects. The clumpiness of the Cosmic Grapes significantly exceeds that of galaxies at later epochs and the predictions from current simulations for early galaxies. Nitrogen-bearing complex organic molecules have been commonly detected in the gas phase but not yet in interstellar ices. This has led to the long-standing question of whether these molecules form in the gas phase or in ices. $\textit{James Webb}$ Space Telescope ($\textit{JWST}$) offers the sensitivity, spectral resolution, and wavelength coverage needed to detect them in ices and investigate whether their abundance ratios are similar in gas and ice. We report the first tentative detection of CH$_3$CN, C$_2$H$_5$CN, and the simple molecule, N$_2$O, based on the CN-stretch band in interstellar ices toward three (HOPS 153, HOPS 370, and IRAS 20126+4104) out of the five protostellar systems observed as part of the Investigating Protostellar Accretion (IPA) GO program with $\textit{JWST}$-NIRSpec. We also provide upper limits for the two other sources with smaller luminosities in the sample. We detect OCN$^-$ in the ices of all sources with typical CH$_3$CN/OCN$^-$ ratios of around 1. Ice and gas column density ratios of the nitrogen-bearing species with respect to each other are better matched than those with respect to methanol, which are a factor of ${\sim}5$ larger in the ices than the gas. We attribute the elevated ice column densities with respect to methanol to the difference in snowline locations of nitrogen-bearing molecules and of methanol, biasing the gas-phase observations toward fewer nitrogen-bearing molecules. Moreover, we find tentative evidence for enhancement of OCN$^-$, CH$_3$CN, and C$_2$H$_5$CN in warmer ices, although formation of these molecules likely starts along with methanol in the cold prestellar phase. Future surveys combining NIRSpec and MIRI, and additional laboratory spectroscopic measurements of C$_2$H$_5$CN ice, are necessary for robust detection and conclusions on the formation history of complex cyanides., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Much of what is known of the chemical composition of the universe is based on emission line spectra from star forming galaxies. Emission-based inferences are, nevertheless, model-dependent and they are dominated by light from luminous star forming regions. An alternative and sensitive probe of the metallicity of galaxies is through absorption lines imprinted on the luminous afterglow spectra of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) from neutral material within their host galaxy. We present results from a JWST/NIRSpec programme to investigate for the first time the relation between the metallicity of neutral gas probed in absorption by GRB afterglows and the metallicity of the star forming regions for the same host galaxy sample. Using an initial sample of eight GRB host galaxies at z=2.1-4.7, we find a tight relation between absorption and emission line metallicities when using the recently proposed $\hat{R}$ metallicity diagnostic (+/-0.2dex). This agreement implies a relatively chemically-homogeneous multi-phase interstellar medium, and indicates that absorption and emission line probes can be directly compared. However, the relation is less clear when using other diagnostics, such as R23 and R3. We also find possible evidence of an elevated N/O ratio in the host galaxy of GRB090323 at z=3.58, consistent with what has been seen in other $z>4$ galaxies. Ultimate confirmation of an enhanced N/O ratio and of the relation between absorption and emission line metallicities will require a more direct determination of the emission line metallicity via the detection of temperature-sensitive auroral lines in our GRB host galaxy sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 24 pages, 15 figures

The chemical enrichment of dust and metals are vital processes in constraining the star formation history of the universe. Previously, the dust masses of high-redshift star-forming galaxies have been determined through their far-infrared continuum, however, equivalent, and potentially simpler, approaches to determining the metal masses have yet to be explored at $z\gtrsim 2$. Here, we present a new method of inferring the metal mass in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies out to $z\approx 8$, using the far-infrared [CII]$-158\mu$m emission line as a proxy. We calibrated the [CII]-to-$M_{\rm Z,ISM}$ conversion factor based on a benchmark observational sample at $z\approx 0$, in addition to gamma-ray burst sightlines at $z>2$ and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies at $z\approx 0$ and $z\approx 6$. We found a universal scaling across redshifts of $\log (M_{\rm Z,ISM}/M_\odot) = \log (L_{\rm [CII]}/L_\odot) - 0.45,$ with a 0.4 dex scatter, which is constant over more than two orders of magnitude in metallicity. We applied this scaling to recent surveys for [CII] in galaxies at $z\gtrsim 2$ and determined the fraction of metals retained in the gas-phase ISM, $M_{\rm Z,ISM} / M_\star$, as a function of redshift showing that an increasing fraction of metals reside in the ISM of galaxies at higher redshifts. We place further constraints on the cosmic metal mass density in the ISM ($\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM}$) at $z\approx 5$ and $\approx 7$, yielding $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 6.6^{+13}_{-4.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 5$) and $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 2.0^{+3.5}_{-1.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 7$). These results are consistent with the expected metal yields from the integrated star formation history at the respective redshifts. The chemical enrichment of dust and metals in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies throughout cosmic time is one of the key driving processes of galaxy evolution. Here we study the evolution of the gas-phase metallicities, dust-to-gas (DTG), and dust-to-metal (DTM) ratios of 36 star-forming galaxies at $1.7 < z < 6.3$ probed by gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We compile all GRB-selected galaxies with intermediate (R=7000) to high (R>40,000) resolution spectroscopic data for which at least one refractory (e.g. Fe) and one volatile (e.g. S or Zn) element have been detected at S/N>3. This is to ensure that accurate abundances and dust depletion patterns can be obtained. We first derive the redshift evolution of the dust-corrected, absorption-line based gas-phase metallicity [M/H]$_{\rm tot}$ in these galaxies, for which we determine a linear relation with redshift ${\rm [M/H]_{tot}}(z) = (-0.21\pm 0.04)z -(0.47\pm 0.14)$. We then examine the DTG and DTM ratios as a function of redshift and through three orders of magnitude in metallicity, quantifying the relative dust abundance both through the direct line-of-sight visual extinction $A_V$ and the derived depletion level. We use a novel method to derive the DTG and DTM mass ratios for each GRB sightline, summing up the mass of all the depleted elements in the dust-phase. We find that the DTG and DTM mass ratios are both strongly correlated with the gas-phase metallicity and show a mild evolution with redshift as well. While these results are subject to a variety of caveats related to the physical environments and the narrow pencil-beam sightlines through the ISM probed by the GRBs, they provide strong implications for studies of dust masses to infer the gas and metal content of high-redshift galaxies, and particularly demonstrate the large offset from the average Galactic value in the low-metallicity, high-redshift regime., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), sources of high-frequency gravitational waves and likely production sites for heavy element nucleosynthesis via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). These heavy elements include some of great geophysical, biological and cultural importance, such as thorium, iodine and gold. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with compact object mergers, and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational-wave merger GW170817. We obtained James Webb Space Telescope mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A=130), and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-IR due to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy element nucleosynthesis across the Universe., Comment: Submitted. Typically visualized from an independent particle viewpoint, the Pauli principle's role in collective motion is analyzed leading to a reimagination of the microscopic dynamics underlying superfluidity/superconductivity and a reinterpretation of several interrelated phenomena: Cooper pairs, the Fermi sea, and Pauli blocking. The current approach, symmetry-invariant perturbation theory is a first principles method with no adjustable parameters. An adiabatic evolution is employed to transfer the well-known Pauli restrictions for identical, independent particles with two spin values to restrictions on the collective modes of an ensemble of ``spin up'' ``spin down'' particles. The collective modes, analytic N-body normal modes, are obtained from a group theoretic exact solution of the first-order equations. Cooper pairing is reinterpreted not as the pairing of two fermions with total zero momentum, but as the convergence of the momentum of the entire ensemble to two values, +k and -k, as the particles in the normal mode move back and forth with a single frequency and phase. The Fermi sea and Pauli blocking, commonly described using independent fermions that occupy lower states to create a ``sea'' in energy space and block occupation is redescribed as a collective energy phenomena of the entire ensemble. Superfluidity, which has always been viewed as a collective phenomena as Cooper pairs are assumed to condense into a macroscopic occupation of a single lowest state, is now reimagined without two-body pairing in real space, but as a macroscopic occupation of a low-energy phonon normal mode resulting in the convergence of the momentum to two equal and opposite values. The expected properties of superfluidity including the rigidity of the wave function, interactions between fermions in different pairs, convergence of the momentum and the gap in the excitation spectrum are discussed.

Context: The extreme luminosity of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) makes them powerful beacons for studies of the distant Universe. The most luminous bursts are typically detected at moderate/high redshift, where the volume for seeing such rare events is maximized and the star-formation activity is greater than at z = 0. For distant events, not all observations are feasible, such as at TeV energies. Aims: Here we present a spectroscopic redshift measurement for the exceptional GRB 221009A, the brightest GRB observed to date with emission extending well into the TeV regime. Methods: We used the X-shooter spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain simultaneous optical to near-IR spectroscopy of the burst afterglow 0.5 days after the explosion. Results: The spectra exhibit both absorption and emission lines from material in a host galaxy at z = 0.151. Thus GRB 221009A was a relatively nearby burst with a luminosity distance of 745 Mpc. Its host galaxy properties (star-formation rate and metallicity) are consistent with those of LGRB hosts at low redshift. This redshift measurement yields information on the energy of the burst. The inferred isotropic energy release, $E_{\rm iso} > 5 \times 10^{54}$ erg, lies at the high end of the distribution, making GRB 221009A one of the nearest and also most energetic GRBs observed to date. We present JWST and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the afterglow of GRB 221009A, the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed. This includes the first mid-IR spectra of any GRB, obtained with JWST/NIRSPEC (0.6-5.5 micron) and MIRI (5-12 micron), 12 days after the burst. Assuming that the intrinsic spectral slope is a single power-law, with $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\beta}$, we obtain $\beta \approx 0.35$, modified by substantial dust extinction with $A_V = 4.9$. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post jet-break model, with electron index $p<2$, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/nIR to X-shooter spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disc-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any supernova component. We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at $z=8.496$ based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained through as part of Early Release Observations programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [CII]-$158\mu$m emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass ($M_\star = 10^{7.2}-10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log{\rm (O/H)} = 7.16^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$ derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [CII] effectively traces the interstellar medium (ISM), we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be $M_{\rm gas} = (8.0\pm 4.0)\times 10^{8}\,M_\odot$ based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [CII]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, $f_{\rm gas} = M_{\rm gas}/(M_{\rm gas} + M_\star) \gtrsim 90\%$, though still consistent within the range expected for its low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metals (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at $z\gtrsim 6$, showing overall low mass ratios of logDGT $<-3.8$ and logDTM $<-0.5$, though consistent with local scaling relations and in particular the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. The study of the properties of galaxies in the first billion years after the Big Bang is one of the major topic of current astrophysics. Optical/near-infrared spectroscopy of the afterglows of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide a powerful diagnostic tool to probe the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies and foreground absorbers, even up to the highest redshifts. We analyze the VLT/X-shooter afterglow spectrum of GRB 210905A, triggered by the Swift Neil Gehrels Observatory, and detect neutral-hydrogen, low-ionization, high-ionization, and fine-structure absorption lines from a complex system at z=6.3118, that we associate with the GRB host galaxy. We study the ISM properties of the host system, revealing the metallicity, kinematics and chemical abundance pattern. The total metallicity of the z~6.3 system is [M/H]=-1.72+/-0.13, after correcting for dust-depletion and taking into account alpha-element enhancement. In addition, we determine the overall amount of dust and dust-to-metal mass ratio (DTM) ([Zn/Fe]_fit=0.33+/-0.09, DTM=0.18+/-0.03). We find indications of nucleosynthesis due to massive stars and evidence of peculiar over-abundance of aluminium. From the analysis of fine-structure lines, we determine distances of several kpc for the low-ionization gas clouds closest to the GRB. Those farther distances are possibly due to the high number of ionizing photons. Using the HST/F140W image of the GRB field, we show the GRB host galaxy as well as multiple objects within 2" from the GRB. We discuss the galaxy structure and kinematics that could explain our observations, also taking into account a tentative detection of Lyman-alpha emission. We present the results from multi-wavelength observations of a transient discovered during the follow-up of S191213g, a gravitational wave (GW) event reported by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration as a possible binary neutron star merger in a low latency search. This search yielded SN2019wxt, a young transient in a galaxy whose sky position (in the 80\% GW contour) and distance ($\sim$150\,Mpc) were plausibly compatible with the localisation uncertainty of the GW event. Initially, the transient's tightly constrained age, its relatively faint peak magnitude ($M_i \sim -16.7$\,mag) and the $r-$band decline rate of $\sim 1$\,mag per 5\,days appeared suggestive of a compact binary merger. However, SN2019wxt spectroscopically resembled a type Ib supernova, and analysis of the optical-near-infrared evolution rapidly led to the conclusion that while it could not be associated with S191213g, it nevertheless represented an extreme outcome of stellar evolution. By modelling the light curve, we estimated an ejecta mass of $\sim 0.1\,M_\odot$, with $^{56}$Ni comprising $\sim 20\%$ of this. We were broadly able to reproduce its spectral evolution with a composition dominated by helium and oxygen, with trace amounts of calcium. We considered various progenitors that could give rise to the observed properties of SN2019wxt, and concluded that an ultra-stripped origin in a binary system is the most likely explanation. Disentangling electromagnetic counterparts to GW events from transients such as SN2019wxt is challenging: in a bid to characterise the level of contamination, we estimated the rate of events with properties comparable to those of SN2019wxt and found that $\sim 1$ such event per week can occur within the typical GW localisation area of O4 alerts out to a luminosity distance of 500\,Mpc, beyond which it would become fainter than the typical depth of current electromagnetic follow-up campaigns., Comment: By the ENGRAVE collaboration (engrave-eso.org). 35 pages, 20 figures, final version accepted by A&A

The transition from the weakly interacting BCS regime to the strongly interacting unitary regime is explored for ultracold trapped Fermi gases assuming a normal mode description of the gas instead of the conventional Cooper pairing. The Pauli principle is applied ``on paper'' by using specific normal mode assignments. Energies, entropies, critical temperatures, and an excitation frequency are studied and compared to existing results in the literature. These normal modes have been derived analytically for N identical, confined particles from a first-order L=0 group theoretic solution of a three-dimensional Hamiltonian with a general two-body interaction. In previous studies, normal modes were able to describe the unitary regime obtaining ground state energies comparable to benchmark results and thermodynamics quantities in excellent agreement with experiment. In a recent study, the behavior of the normal mode frequencies was investigated for Hamiltonians with a range of interparticle interaction strengths from BCS to unitarity in the first test of this approach beyond the unitary regime, and a microscopic basis of the large excitation gaps and universal behavior at unitarity was proposed. Based on the success of these earlier studies, the current paper continues to explore the ability of normal modes to describe superfluidity along the BCS to unitarity transition. The results confirm earlier conclusions that the physics of superfluidity can be described using normal modes across a wide range of interparticle interaction strengths and offer an alternative to the two-body pairing models commonly used to describe superfluidity along this transition., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We present a detailed follow-up of the very energetic GRB 210905A at a high redshift of z = 6.312 and its luminous X-ray and optical afterglow. We obtained a photometric and spectroscopic follow-up in the optical and near-infrared (NIR), covering both the prompt and afterglow emission from a few minutes up to 20 Ms after burst. With an isotropic gamma-ray energy release of Eiso = 1.27E54 erg, GRB 210905A lies in the top ~7% of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in terms of energy released. Its afterglow is among the most luminous ever observed. It starts with a shallow evolution that can be explained by energy injection, and it is followed by a steeper decay, while the spectral energy distribution is in agreement with slow cooling in a constant-density environment within the standard fireball theory. A jet break at ~ 46.2+-16.3 d (~6.3 d rest-frame) has been observed in the X-ray light curve; however, it is hidden in the H band due to the contribution from the likely host galaxy, the fourth GRB host at z > 6 known to date. We derived a half-opening angle of 8.4+-1.0 degrees, which is the highest ever measured for a z>6 burst, but within the range covered by closer events. The resulting collimation-corrected gamma-ray energy release of 1E52 erg is also among the highest ever measured. The moderately large half-opening angle argues against recent claims of an inverse dependence of the half-opening angle on the redshift. The total jet energy is likely too large to be sustained by a standard magnetar, and it suggests that the central engine of this burst was a newly formed black hole. Despite the outstanding energetics and luminosity of both GRB 210905A and its afterglow, we demonstrate that they are consistent with those of less distant bursts, indicating that the powering mechanisms and progenitors do not evolve significantly with redshift., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Long ($>2$ s) gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with explosions of massive stars, although in three instances, supernovae (SNe) have not been detected, despite deep observations. With new HI line and archival optical integral field spectroscopy data, we characterize the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy of one of these events, GRB 111005A, in order to shed light on the unclear nature of these peculiar objects. We found that the atomic gas, radio continuum, and rotational patterns are in general very smooth throughout the galaxy, which does not indicate a recent gas inflow or outflow. There is also no gas concentration around the GRB position. The ISM in this galaxy differs from that in hosts of other GRBs and SNe, which may suggest that the progenitor of GRB 111005A was not an explosion of a very massive star (e.g. a compact object merger). However, there are subtle irregularities of the GRB 111005A host (most at a $2\sigma$ level), which may point to a weak gas inflow or interaction. Since in the SE part of the host there is 15% more atomic gas and twice less molecular gas than in NW part, the molecular gas fraction is low. In the SE part there is also a region with very high H$\alpha$ equivalent width. There is more continuum 1.4 GHz emission to the SE and an S-shaped warp in the UV. Finally, there is also a low-metallicity region 3.5" (1 kpc) from the GRB position. We observed GRB190114C (redshift z = 0.4245), the first GRB ever detected at TeV energies, at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with several ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, with the primary goal of studying its underlying supernova, SN2019jrj. The monitoring spanned the time interval between 1.3 and 370 days after the burst, in the observer frame. We find that the afterglow emission can be modelled with a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium modified by time-variable extinction along the line of sight. A jet break could be present after 7 rest-frame days, and accordingly the maximum luminosity of the underlying SN ranges between that of stripped-envelope corecollapse supernovae (SNe) of intermediate luminosity, and that of the luminous GRB-associated SN2013dx. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN2019jrj are not as broad as in classical GRB-SNe, and are rather more similar to those of less-luminous core-collapse SNe. Taking the broad-lined stripped-envelope core-collapse SN2004aw as an analogue, we tentatively derive the basic physical properties of SN2019jrj. We discuss the possibility that a fraction of the TeV emission of this source might have had a hadronic origin and estimate the expected high-energy neutrino detection level with IceCube., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a pilot search of CO emission in three H$_2$-absorbing, long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies at z~2-3. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) to target the CO(3-2) emission line and report non-detections for all three hosts. These are used to place limits on the host molecular gas masses, assuming a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$). We find, $M_{\rm mol} < 3.5\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,080607), $M_{\rm mol} < 4.7\times 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,120815A), and $M_{\rm mol} < 8.9\times 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,181020A). The high limits on the molecular gas mass for the latter two cases are a consequence of their low stellar masses $M_\star$ ($M_\star \lesssim 10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) and low gas-phase metallicities ($Z\sim 0.03\,Z_{\odot}$). The limit on the $M_{\rm mol}/M_\star$ ratio derived for GRB\,080607, however, is consistent with the average population of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts and stellar masses. We discuss the broader implications for a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, and demonstrate that the canonical Galactic $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, will severely underestimate the actual molecular gas mass for all galaxies at $z>1$ with $M_\star < 10^{10}\,M_\odot$. To better quantify this we develop a simple approach to estimate the relevant $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ factor based only on the redshift and stellar mass of individual galaxies. The elevated conversion factors will make these galaxies appear CO-"dark" and difficult to detect in emission, as is the case for the majority of GRB hosts. GRB spectroscopy thus offers a complementary approach to identify low-metallicity, star-forming galaxies with abundant molecular gas reservoirs at high redshifts that are otherwise missed by current ALMA surveys., Comment: 7 pages, 5 Figs, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The frequencies of the analytic normal modes for N identical particles are studied as a function of system parameters from the weakly interacting BCS regime to the strongly interacting unitary regime. The normal modes were obtained previously from a first-order L=0 group theoretic solution of a three-dimensional Hamiltonian with a general two-body interaction for confined, identical particles. In a precursor to this study, the collective behavior of these normal modes was investigated as a function of N from few-body systems to many-body systems analyzing the contribution of individual particles to the collective macroscopic motions. A specific case, the Hamiltonian for Fermi gases in the unitary regime was studied in more detail. This regime is known to support collective behavior in the form of superfluidity and has previously been successfully described using normal modes. Two phenomena that could sustain the emergence and stability of superfluid behavior were revealed, including the behavior of the normal mode frequencies as N increases. In this paper, I focus on a more detailed analysis of these analytic frequencies, extending my investigation to include Hamiltonians with a range of interparticle interaction strengths from the BCS regime to the unitary regime and analyzing the microscopic dynamics that lead to large gaps at unitarity. The results of the current study suggest that in regimes where higher-order effects are small, normal modes an be used to describe the physics of superfluidity from the weakly interacting BCS regime with the emergence of small excitation gaps to unitarity with its large gaps, and can offer insight into a possible microscopic understanding of the behavior at unitarity. This approach could thus offer an alternative to the two-body pairing models commonly used to describe superfluidity along this transition., Comment: 23 pages including 7 Appendices and 16 figures

On 2019 August 14, the LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected a high-significance event labelled S190814bv. Preliminary analysis of the GW data suggests that the event was likely due to the merger of a compact binary system formed by a BH and a NS. ElectromagNetic counterparts of GRAvitational wave sources at the VEry Large Telescope (ENGRAVE) collaboration members carried out an intensive multi-epoch, multi-instrument observational campaign to identify the possible optical/near infrared counterpart of the event. In addition, the ATLAS, GOTO, GRAWITA-VST, Pan-STARRS and VINROUGE projects also carried out a search on this event. Our observations allow us to place limits on the presence of any counterpart and discuss the implications for the kilonova (KN) possibly generated by this NS-BH merger, and for the strategy of future searches. Altogether, our observations allow us to exclude a KN with large ejecta mass $M\gtrsim 0.1\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ to a high ($>90\%$) confidence, and we can exclude much smaller masses in a subsample of our observations. This disfavours the tidal disruption of the neutron star during the merger. Despite the sensitive instruments involved in the campaign, given the distance of S190814bv we could not reach sufficiently deep limits to constrain a KN comparable in luminosity to AT 2017gfo on a large fraction of the localisation probability. This suggests that future (likely common) events at a few hundreds Mpc will be detected only by large facilities with both high sensitivity and large field of view. Galaxy-targeted observations can reach the needed depth over a relevant portion of the localisation probability with a smaller investment of resources, but the number of galaxies to be targeted in order to get a fairly complete coverage is large, even in the case of a localisation as good as that of this event., Comment: 52 pages, revised version now accepted for publication in A&A. GRB 190114C is the first GRB for which the detection of very-high energy emission up to the TeV range has been reported. It is still unclear whether environmental properties might have contributed to the production of these very high-energy photons, or if it is solely related to the released GRB emission. The relatively low redshift of the GRB (z=0.425) allows us to study the host galaxy of this event in detail, and to potentially identify idiosyncrasies that could point to progenitor characteristics or environmental properties responsible for such a unique event. We use ultraviolet, optical, infrared and submillimetre imaging and spectroscopy obtained with HST, VLT and ALMA to obtain an extensive dataset on which the analysis of the host galaxy is based. The host system is composed of a close pair of interacting galaxies (Delta v = 50 km s^-1), both of which are well-detected by ALMA in CO(3-2). The GRB occurred within the nuclear region (~170 pc from the centre) of the less massive but more star-forming galaxy of the pair. The host is more massive (log(M/M_odot)=9.3) than average GRB hosts at that redshift and the location of the GRB is rather unique. The enhanced star-formation rate was probably triggered by tidal interactions between the two galaxies. Our ALMA observations indicate that both host galaxy and companion have a high molecular gas fraction, as has been observed before in interacting galaxy pairs. The location of the GRB within the core of an interacting galaxy with an extinguished line-of-sight is indicative of a denser environment than typically observed for GRBs and could have been crucial for the generation of the very-high-energy photons that were observed., Comment: A&A, in press, 11 pages

Normal mode dynamics are ubiquitous underlying the motions of diverse systems from rotating stars to crystal structures. These behaviors are composed of simple collective motions of particles which move with the same frequency and phase, thus encapsulating many-body effects into simple dynamic motions. In regimes such as the unitary regime for ultracold Fermi gases, a single collective mode can dominate, leading to simple behavior as seen in superfluidity. I investigate the evolution of collective motion as a function of N for five types of normal modes obtained from an L=0 group theoretic solution of a general Hamiltonian for confined, identical particles. I show using simple analytic forms that the collective behavior of few-body systems, with the well known motions of molecular equivalents such as ammonia and methane, evolves smoothly to the collective motions expected for large N ensembles. The transition occurs at quite low values of N. I study a Hamiltonian known to support collective behavior, the Hamiltonian for Fermi gases in the unitary regime. I analyze the evolution of both frequencies and the coefficients that mix the radial and angular coordinates which both depend on interparticle interactions. This analysis reveals two phenomena that could contribute to the viability of collective behavior. First the mixing coefficients go to zero or unity, i.e. no mixing, as N becomes large resulting in solutions that do not depend on the details of the interparticle potential as expected for this unitary regime, and that manifest the symmetry of an underlying approximate Hamiltonian. Second, the five normal mode frequencies which are all close for low values of N, separate as N increases, creating large gaps that can, in principle, offer stability to collective behavior if mechanisms to prevent the transfer of energy to other modes exist (such as low temperature) or can be constructed., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 2 appendices

We report the detections of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), vibrationally-excited H$_2$ (H$^*_2$), and neutral atomic carbon (CI), in two new afterglow spectra of GRBs\,181020A ($z=2.938$) and 190114A ($z=3.376$), observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Both host-galaxy absorption systems are characterized by strong damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) and substantial amounts of molecular hydrogen with $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.20\pm 0.05,~20.40\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,181020A) and $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.15\pm 0.05,~19.44\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,190114A). The DLA metallicites, depletion levels and dust extinctions are [Zn/H] = $-1.57\pm 0.06$, [Zn/Fe] = $0.67\pm 0.03$, and $A_V = 0.27\pm 0.02$\,mag (GRB\,181020A) and [Zn/H] = $-1.23\pm 0.07$, [Zn/Fe] = $1.06\pm 0.08$, and $A_V = 0.36\pm 0.02$\,mag (GRB\,190114A). We then examine the molecular gas content of all known H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs and explore the physical conditions and characteristics of these systems. We confirm that H$_2$ is detected in all CI- and H$^*_2$-bearing GRB absorption systems, but that these rarer features are not necessarily detected in all GRB H$_2$ absorbers. We find that a large molecular fraction of $f_{\rm H_2} \gtrsim 10^{-3}$ is required for CI to be detected. The defining characteristic for H$^*_2$ to be present is less clear, though a large H$_2$ column density is an essential factor. We then derive the H$_2$ excitation temperatures of the molecular gas and find that they are relatively low with $T_{\rm ex} \approx 100 - 300$\,K, however, there could be evidence of warmer components populating the high-$J$ H$_2$ levels in GRBs\,181020A and 190114A. Finally, we demonstrate that the otherwise successful X-shooter GRB afterglow campaign is hampered by a significant dust bias excluding the most dust-obscured H$_2$ absorbers from identification [Abridged]., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures + Appendix. We report our identification of the optical afterglow and host galaxy of the short-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 160821B. The spectroscopic redshift of the host is $z=0.162$, making it one of the lowest redshift sGRBs identified by Swift. Our intensive follow-up campaign using a range of ground-based facilities as well as HST, XMM and Swift, shows evidence for a late-time excess of optical and near-infrared emission in addition to a complex afterglow. The afterglow light-curve at X-ray frequencies reveals a narrow jet, $\theta_j\sim1.9^{+0.10}_{-0.03}$ deg, that is refreshed at $>1$ day post-burst by a slower outflow with significantly more energy than the initial outflow that produced the main GRB. Observations of the 5 GHz radio afterglow shows a reverse shock into a mildly magnetised shell. The optical and near-infrared excess is fainter than AT2017gfo associated with GW170817, and is well explained by a kilonova with dynamic ejecta mass $M_{\rm dyn}=(1.0\pm0.6)\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a secular (postmerger) ejecta mass with $M_{\rm pm}=(1.0\pm0.6)\times10^{-2}$ M$_\odot$, consistent with a binary neutron star merger resulting in a short-lived massive neutron star. We present a study of the extinction and depletion-derived dust properties of gamma-ray burst (GRB) absorbers at $1

Unusual stellar explosions represent an opportunity to learn about both stellar and galaxy evolution. Mapping the atomic gas in host galaxies of such transients can lead to an understanding of the conditions triggering them. We provide resolved atomic gas observations of the host galaxy, CGCG137-068, of the unusual, poorly-understood transient AT2018cow searching for clues to understand its nature. We test whether it is consistent with a recent inflow of atomic gas from the intergalactic medium, as suggested for host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and some supernovae (SNe). We observed the HI hyperfine structure line of the AT2018cow host with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. There is no unusual atomic gas concentration near the position of AT2018cow. The gas distribution is much more regular than those of GRB/SN hosts. The AT2018cow host has an atomic gas mass lower by 0.24 dex than predicted from its star formation rate (SFR) and is at the lower edge of the galaxy main sequence. In the continuum we detected the emission of AT2018cow and of a star-forming region in the north-eastern part of the bar (away from AT2018cow). This region hosts a third of the galaxy's SFR. The absence of atomic gas concentration close to AT2018cow, along with a normal SFR and regular HI velocity field, sets CGCG137-068 apart from GRB/SN hosts studied in HI. The environment of AT2018cow therefore suggests that its progenitor may not have been a massive star. Our findings are consistent with an origin of the transient that does not require a connection between its progenitor and gas concentration or inflow: an exploding low-mass star, a tidal disruption event, a merger of white dwarfs, or a merger between a neutron star and a giant star. We present a survey for neutral atomic-carbon (CI) along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sightlines, which probes the shielded neutral gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) of GRB host galaxies at high redshift. We compile a sample of 29 medium- to high-resolution GRB optical afterglow spectra spanning a redshift range through most of cosmic time from $1 < z < 6$. We find that seven ($\approx 25\%$) of the GRBs entering our statistical sample have CI detected in absorption. It is evident that there is a strong excess of cold gas in GRB hosts compared to absorbers in quasar sightlines. We investigate the dust properties of the GRB CI absorbers and find that the amount of neutral carbon is positively correlated with the visual extinction, $A_V$, and the strength of the 2175 \AA\ dust extinction feature, $A_{\mathrm{bump}}$. GRBs with CI detected in absorption are all observed above a certain threshold of $\log N$(HI)$/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ + [X/H] > 20.7 and a dust-phase iron column density of $\log N$(Fe)$_{\mathrm{dust}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ > 16.2. In contrast to the SED-derived dust properties, the strength of the CI absorption does not correlate with the depletion-derived dust properties. This indicates that the GRB CI absorbers trace dusty systems where the dust composition is dominated by carbon-rich dust grains. The observed higher metal and dust column densities of the GRB CI absorbers compared to H$_2$- and CI-bearing quasar absorbers is mainly a consequence of how the two absorber populations are selected, but is also required in the presence of intense UV radiation fields in actively star-forming galaxies., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 14 pages, 12 figures

Molecular species, most frequently H_2, are present in a small, but growing, number of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectra at redshifts z~2-3, detected through their rest-frame UV absorption lines. In rare cases, lines of vibrationally excited states of H_2 can be detected in the same spectra. The connection between afterglow line-of-sight absorption properties of molecular (and atomic) gas, and the observed behaviour in emission of similar sources at low redshift, is an important test of the suitability of GRB afterglows as general probes of conditions in star formation regions at high redshift. Recently, emission lines of carbon monoxide have been detected in a small sample of GRB host galaxies, at sub-mm wavelengths, but no searches for H_2 in emission have been reported yet. In this paper we perform an exploratory search for rest-frame K band rotation-vibrational transitions of H_2 in emission, observable only in the lowest redshift GRB hosts (z<0.22). Searching the data of four host galaxies, we detect a single significant rotation-vibrational H_2 line candidate, in the host of GRB 031203. Re-analysis of Spitzer mid-infrared spectra of the same GRB host gives a single low significance rotational line candidate. The (limits on) line flux ratios are consistent with those of blue compact dwarf galaxies in the literature. New instrumentation, in particular on the JWST and the ELT, can facilitate a major increase in our understanding of the H_2 properties of nearby GRB hosts, and the relation to H_2 absorption in GRBs at higher redshift., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS accepted

Evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are important contributors to the elements that form dust in the interstellar medium of galaxies, in particular, carbon and iron. However, they require at least a Gyr to start producing these elements, therefore, a change in dust quantity or properties may appear at high redshifts. In this work, we use extinction of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows as a tool to look for variations in dust properties at z>3. We use a spectroscopically selected sample of GRB afterglows observed with the VLT/X-shooter instrument to determine extinction curves out to high redshifts. We present ten new z>3 X-shooter GRBs of which six are dusty. Combining these with individual extinction curves of three previously known z>3 GRBs, we find an average extinction curve consistent with the SMC-Bar. A comparison with spectroscopically selected GRBs at all redshifts indicates a drop in visual extinction (A_V) at z>3.5 with no moderate or high extinction bursts. We check for observational bias using template spectra and find that GRBs up to z~8 are detectable with X-shooter up to A_V~0.3 mag. Although other biases are noted, a uniformly low dust content above z>3.5 indicates a real drop, suggesting a transition in dust properties and/or available dust building blocks. The remarkable increase in dust content at z<3.5 could arise due to carbon and possibly iron production by the first carbon-rich AGB and Type Ia SNe, respectively. Introduced eighty years ago, the Fermi pseudopotential has been a powerful concept in multiple fields of physics. It replaces the detailed shape of a potential by a delta-function operator multiplied by a parameter giving the strength of the potential. For Cartesian dimensions $d>1$, a regularization operator is necessary to remove singularities in the wave function. In this study, we develop a Fermi pseudopotential generalized to $d$ dimensions (including non-integer) and to non-zero wavenumber, $k$. Our approach has the advantage of circumventing singularities that occur in the wave function at certain integer values of $d$ while being valid arbitrarily close to integer $d$. In the limit of integer dimension, we show that our generalized pseudopotential is equivalent to previously derived $s$-wave pseudopotentials. Our pseudopotential generalizes the operator to non-integer dimension, includes energy ($k$) dependence, and simplifies the dimension-dependent coupling constant expression derived from a Green's function approach. We apply this pseudopotential to the problem of two cold atoms ($k\to0$) in a harmonic trap and extend the energy expression to arbitrary dimension.

We present here a survey of high-ionization absorption lines in the afterglow spectra of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) obtained with the VLT/X-shooter spectrograph. Our main goal is to investigate the circumburst medium in the natal regions of GRBs. Our primary focus is on the NV 1238,1242 line transitions, but we also discuss other high-ionization lines such as OVI, CIV and SiIV. We find no correlation between the column density of NV and the neutral gas properties such as metallicity, HI column density and dust depletion, however the relative velocity of NV, typically a blueshift with respect to the neutral gas, is found to be correlated with the column density of HI. This may be explained if the NV gas is part of an HII region hosting the GRB, where the region's expansion is confined by dense, neutral gas in the GRB's host galaxy. We find tentative evidence (at 2-sigma significance) that the X-ray derived column density, N_H,X, may be correlated with the column density of NV, which would indicate that both measurements are sensitive to the column density of the gas located in the vicinity of the GRB. We investigate the scenario where NV (and also OVI) is produced by recombination after the corresponding atoms have been stripped entirely of their electrons by the initial prompt emission, in contrast to previous models where highly-ionized gas is produced by photoionization from the GRB afterglow., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures + Appendix. The part played by stars in the ionization of the intergalactic medium remains an open question. A key issue is the proportion of the stellar ionizing radiation that escapes the galaxies in which it is produced. Spectroscopy of gamma-ray burst afterglows can be used to determine the neutral hydrogen column-density in their host galaxies and hence the opacity to extreme ultra-violet radiation along the lines-of-sight to the bursts. Thus, making the reasonable assumption that long-duration GRB locations are representative of the sites of massive stars that dominate EUV production, one can calculate an average escape fraction of ionizing radiation in a way that is independent of galaxy size, luminosity or underlying spectrum. Here we present a sample of NH measures for 138 GRBs in the range 1.6~0.005, with a 98% confidence upper limit of ~0.015. This analysis suggests that stars provide a small contribution to the ionizing radiation budget of the IGM at z<5, where the bulk of the bursts lie. At higher redshifts, z>5, firm conclusions are limited by the small size of the GRB sample, but any decline in average HI column-density seems to be modest. We also find no indication of a significant correlation of NH with galaxy UV luminosity or host stellar mass, for the subset of events for which these are available. We discuss in some detail a number of selection effects and potential biases. Drawing on a range of evidence we argue that such effects, while not negligible, are unlikely to produce systematic errors of more than a factor ~2, and so would not affect the primary conclusions. Given that many GRB hosts are low metallicity, high specific star-formation rate, dwarf galaxies, these results present a particular problem for the hypothesis that such galaxies dominated the reionization of the universe., Comment: 31 pages

Understanding the emergence of collective organizational phenomena is a major goal in many fields of physics from condensed matter to cosmology. Using a recently introduced manybody perturbation formalism for fermions, we propose a mechanism for the emergence of collective behavior, specifically superfluidity, driven by quantum statistics and the enforcement of the Pauli principle through the selection of normal modes. The method, which is called symmetry invariant perturbation theory (SPT), uses group theory and graphical techniques to solve the manybody Schrodinger equation through first order exactly. The solution at first order defines collective coordinates in terms of five N-body normal modes, identified as breathing, center of mass, single particle angular excitation, single particle radial excitation and phonon. A correspondence is established "on paper" that enforces the Pauli principle through the assignment of specific normal mode quantum numbers. Applied in the unitary regime, this normal mode assignment yields occupation only in an extremely low frequency N-body phonon mode at ultralow temperatures. A single particle radial excitation mode at a much higher frequency creates a gap that stabilizes the superfluidity at low temperatures. Coupled with the corresponding values for the frequencies at unitarity obtained by this manybody calculation, we obtain good agreement with experimental thermodynamic results including the lambda transition in the specific heat. Our results suggest that the emergence of collective behavior in macroscopic systems is driven by the Pauli principle and its selection of the correct collective coordinates in the form of N-body normal modes., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

In this work we present spectra of all $\gamma$-ray burst (GRB) afterglows that have been promptly observed with the X-shooter spectrograph until 31-03-2017. In total, we obtained spectroscopic observations of 103 individual GRBs observed within 48 hours of the GRB trigger. Redshifts have been measured for 97 per cent of these, covering a redshift range from 0.059 to 7.84. Based on a set of observational selection criteria that minimize biases with regards to intrinsic properties of the GRBs, the follow-up effort has been focused on producing a homogeneous sample of 93 afterglow spectra for GRBs discovered by the Swift satellite. We here provide a public release of all the reduced spectra, including continuum estimates and telluric absorption corrections. For completeness, we also provide reductions for the 18 late-time observations of the underlying host galaxies. We provide an assessment of the degree of completeness with respect to the parent GRB population, in terms of the X-ray properties of the bursts in the sample and find that the sample presented here is representative of the full Swift sample. We constrain the fraction of dark bursts to be < 28 per cent and we confirm previous results that higher optical darkness is correlated with increased X-ray absorption. For the 42 bursts for which it is possible, we provide a measurement of the neutral hydrogen column density, increasing the total number of published HI column density measurements by $\sim$ 33 per cent. The binary neutron star merger GW170817 was the first multi-messenger event observed in both gravitational and electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic signal began approximately 2 seconds post-merger with a weak, short burst of gamma-rays, which was followed over the next hours and days by the ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared emission from a radioactively- powered kilonova. Later, non-thermal rising X-ray and radio emission was observed. The low luminosity of the gamma-rays and the rising non-thermal flux from the source at late times could indicate that we are outside the opening angle of the beamed relativistic jet. Alternatively, the emission could be arising from a cocoon of material formed from the interaction between a jet and the merger ejecta. Here we present late-time optical detections and deep near-infrared limits on the emission from GW170817 at 110 days post-merger. Our new observations are at odds with expectations of late-time emission from kilonova models, being too bright and blue. Instead, the emission arises from the interaction between the relativistic ejecta of GW170817 and the interstellar medium. We show that this emission matches the expectations of a Gaussian structured relativistic jet, which would have launched a high luminosity short GRB to an aligned observer. However, other jet structure or cocoon models can also match current data - the future evolution of the afterglow will directly distinguish the origin of the emission., Comment: Includes MCMC fitting

We here present the spectroscopic follow-up observations with VLT/X-shooter of the Swift long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 160804A at z = 0.737. Typically, GRBs are found in low-mass, metal-poor galaxies which constitute the sub-luminous population of star-forming galaxies. For the host galaxy of the GRB presented here we derive a stellar mass of $\log(M_*/M_{\odot}) = 9.80\pm 0.07$, a roughly solar metallicity (12+log(O/H) = $8.74\pm 0.12$) based on emission line diagnostics, and an infrared luminosity of $M_{3.6/(1+z)} = -21.94$ mag, but find it to be dust-poor ($E(B-V) < 0.05$ mag). This establishes the galaxy hosting GRB 160804A as one of the most luminous, massive and metal-rich GRB hosts at z < 1.5. Furthermore, the gas-phase metallicity is found to be representative of the physical conditions of the gas close to the explosion site of the burst. The high metallicity of the host galaxy is also observed in absorption, where we detect several strong FeII transitions as well as MgII and MgI. While host galaxy absorption features are common in GRB afterglow spectra, we detect absorption from strong metal lines directly in the host continuum (at a time when the afterglow was contributing to < 15%). Finally, we discuss the possibility that the geometry and state of the absorbing and emitting gas is indicative of a galactic scale outflow expelled at the final stage of two merging galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; Accepted to MNRAS

The detection of GW170817 in both gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves heralds the age of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. On 17 August 2017 the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors observed GW170817, a strong signal from the merger of a binary neutron-star system. Less than 2 seconds after the merger, a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) was detected within a region of the sky consistent with the LIGO-Virgo-derived location of the gravitational-wave source. This sky region was subsequently observed by optical astronomy facilities, resulting in the identification of an optical transient signal within $\sim 10$ arcsec of the galaxy NGC 4993. These multi-messenger observations allow us to use GW170817 as a standard siren, the gravitational-wave analog of an astronomical standard candle, to measure the Hubble constant. This quantity, which represents the local expansion rate of the Universe, sets the overall scale of the Universe and is of fundamental importance to cosmology. Our measurement combines the distance to the source inferred purely from the gravitational-wave signal with the recession velocity inferred from measurements of the redshift using electromagnetic data. This approach does not require any form of cosmic "distance ladder;" the gravitational wave analysis can be used to estimate the luminosity distance out to cosmological scales directly, without the use of intermediate astronomical distance measurements. We determine the Hubble constant to be $70.0^{+12.0}_{-8.0} \, \mathrm{km} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ (maximum a posteriori and 68% credible interval). This is consistent with existing measurements, while being completely independent of them.
