We present optical and near-infrared (NIR, Y-, J-, H-band) observations of 42 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the untargeted intermediate Palomar Transient Factory survey. This new data set covers a broad range of redshifts and host galaxy stellar masses, compared to previous SN Ia efforts in the NIR. We construct a sample, using also literature data at optical and NIR wavelengths, to examine claimed correlations between the host stellar masses and the Hubble diagram residuals. The SN magnitudes are corrected for host galaxy extinction using either a global total-to-selective extinction ratio, R V = 2.0, for all SNe, or a best-fit R V for each SN individually. Unlike previous studies that were based on a narrower range in host stellar mass, we do not find evidence for a “mass step,” between the color- and stretch-corrected peak J and H magnitudes for galaxies below and above . However, the mass step remains significant (3σ) at optical wavelengths (g, r, i) when using a global R V , but vanishes when each SN is corrected using their individual best-fit R V . Our study confirms the benefits of the NIR SN Ia distance estimates, as these are largely exempted from the empirical corrections dominating the systematic uncertainties in the optical.

We report the discovery and characterisation of a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting the bright (K = 8.8), quiet, and nearby (37 pc) M3V dwarf TOI-1266. We validate the planetary nature of TOI-1266 b and c using four sectors of TESS photometry and data from the newly-commissioned 1-m SAINT-EX telescope located in San Pedro Mártir (México). We also include additional ground-based follow-up photometry as well as high-resolution spectroscopy and high-angular imaging observations. The inner, larger planet has a radius of R = 2.37-0.12+0.16 R and an orbital period of 10.9 days. The outer, smaller planet has a radius of R = 1.56-0.13+0.15 R on an 18.8-day orbit. The data are found to be consistent with circular, co-planar and stable orbits that are weakly influenced by the 2:1 mean motion resonance. Our TTV analysis of the combined dataset enables model-independent constraints on the masses and eccentricities of the planets. We find planetary masses of Mp = 13.5-9.0+11.0 M (

The early optical emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) gives an opportunity to understand the central engine and first stages of these events. About 30% of GRBs present flares whose origin is still a subject of discussion. We present optical photometry of GRB 180620A with the COATLI telescope and RATIR instrument. COATLI started to observe from the end of prompt emission at T + 39.3 s and RATIR from T + 121.4 s. We supplement the optical data with the X-ray light curve from Swift/XRT. We observe an optical flare from T + 110 s to T + 550 s, with a temporal index decay α O,decay = 1.32 ± 0.01, and Δt/t = 1.63, which we interpret as the signature of a reverse shock component. After the initial normal decay the light curves show a long plateau from T + 500 s to T + 7800 s in both X-rays and the optical before decaying again after an achromatic jet break at T + 7800 s. Fluctuations are seen during the plateau phase in the optical. Adding to the complexity of GRB afterglows, the plateau phase (typically associated with the coasting phase of the jet) is seen in this object after the "normal" decay phase (associated with the deceleration phase of the jet), and the jet break phase occurs directly after the plateau. We suggest that this sequence of events can be explained by a rapid deceleration of the jet with t d ≲ 40 s due to the high density of the environment (≈100 cm-3) followed by reactivation of the central engine, which causes the flare and powers the plateau phase.

We present observations of the possible short GRB 180418A in γ-rays, X-rays, and in the optical. Early optical photometry with the TAROT and RATIR instruments shows a bright peak (≈14.2 AB mag) between T + 28 and T + 90 s that we interpret as the signature of a reverse shock. Later observations can be modeled by a standard forward shock model and show no evidence of a jet break, allowing us to constrain the jet collimation to θ j > 7°. Using deep late-time optical observations, we place an upper limit of r > 24 AB mag on any underlying host galaxy. The detection of the afterglow in the Swift UV filters constrains the GRB redshift to z < 1.3 and places an upper bound on the γ-ray isotropic equivalent energy E γ,iso < 3 ×1051 erg. The properties of this GRB (e.g., duration, hardness ratio, energy, and environment) lie at the intersection between short and long bursts, and we cannot conclusively identify its type. We estimate that the probability that it is drawn from the population of short GRBs is 10%-30%.

We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012-2015, observed by several multiwavelength facilities including the Gran Canarias Telescope 10.4 m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL-SPI-ACS, Swift-BAT, and Fermi-GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1-10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A, and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB 130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constrain the pre-jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new and previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for eight other sGRBs we are able to: place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy, or any underlying 'kilonova' emission. Our late-time afterglow observations of the sGRB 170817A/GW170817 are also discussed and compared with the sub-set of sGRBs.

Wide-field optical surveys have begun to uncover large samples of fast (trise ≲ 5 d), luminous (Mpeak < -18), blue transients. While commonly attributed to the breakout of a supernova shock into a dense wind, the great distances to the transients of this class found so far have hampered detailed investigation of their properties. We present photometry and spectroscopy from a comprehensive worldwide campaign to observe AT 2018cow (ATLAS 18qqn), the first fast-luminous optical transient to be found in real time at lowredshift. Our first spectra (10 days. The spectrum remains extremely hot throughout its evolution, and the photospheric radius contracts with time (receding below R < 1014 cm after 1 month). This behaviour does not match that of any known supernova, although a relativistic jet within a fallback supernova could explain some of the observed features. Alternatively, the transient could originate from the disruption of a star by an intermediate-mass black hole, although thiswould require long-lasting emission of highly super-Eddington thermal radiation. In either case, AT 2018cow suggests that the population of fast luminous transients represents a new class of astrophysical event. Intensive follow-up of this event in its late phases, and of any future events found at comparable distance, will be essential to better constrain their origins.

A long-standing paradigm in astrophysics is that collisions-or mergers-of two neutron stars form highly relativistic and collimated outflows (jets) that power γ-ray bursts of short (less than two seconds) duration. The observational support for this model, however, is only indirect. A hitherto outstanding prediction is that gravitational-wave events from such mergers should be associated with γ-ray bursts, and that a majority of these bursts should be seen off-axis, that is, they should point away from Earth. Here we report the discovery observations of the X-ray counterpart associated with the gravitational-wave event GW170817. Although the electromagnetic counterpart at optical and infrared frequencies is dominated by the radioactive glow (known as a kilonova') from freshly synthesized rapid neutron capture (r-process) material in the merger ejecta, observations at X-ray and, later, radio frequencies are consistent with a short γ-ray burst viewed off-axis. Our detection of X-ray emission at a location coincident with the kilonova transient provides the missing observational link between short γ-ray bursts and gravitational waves from neutron-star mergers, and gives independent confirmation of the collimated nature of the γ-ray-burst emission.

We report here the discovery by the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) of iPTF14yb, a luminous(Mr ≈ -27.8 mag), cosmological (redshift 1.9733), rapidly fading optical transient. We demonstrate, based onprobabilistic arguments and a comparison with the broader population, that iPTF14yb is the optical afterglow ofthe long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 140226A. This marks the first unambiguous discovery of a GRBafterglow prior to (and thus entirely independent of) an associated high-energy trigger. We estimate the rate ofiPTF14yb-like sources (i.e., cosmologically distant relativistic explosions) based on iPTF observations, inferringan all-sky value of Rrel = 610 yr?1 (68% confidence interval of 1102000 yr?1). Our derived rate is consistent(within the large uncertainty) with the all-sky rate of on-axis GRBs derived by the Swift satellite. Finally, webriefly discuss the implications of the nondetection to date of bona fide orphan afterglows (i.e., those lackingdetectable high-energy emission) on GRB beaming and the degree of baryon loading in these relativistic jets.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the secretory cell population and distribution of MUC5B and MUC7 mucins in the sinus mucosa of pediatric patients with and without chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: Sinus mucosal specimens were collected at surgery in a pediatric tertiary care facility. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and morphometric analyses were performed on sinus mucosa of 20 children with CRS and 7 children without CRS. RESULTS: A significant increase in the area of submucosal glands was evident in the sinus mucosa of children with CRS as compared to controls. MUC5B and MUC7 mucins were expressed in the submucosal glands, as well as in goblet cells, in the sinus mucosa of both populations. No differences in MUC5B or MUC7 expression were observed when mucin expression was normalized to glandular area. CONCLUSIONS: Children with CRS have an increased number of submucosal glands, indicating that glandular mucins contribute to mucus overproduction in CRS. MUC5B and MUC7 mucins, which have previously been considered only glandular mucins, are also expressed in goblet cells in the sinus mucosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advancements in microscopy techniques and computing technologies have enabled researchers to digitally reconstruct brains at micron scale. As a result, community efforts like the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN) have generated thousands of whole-brain imaging datasets to trace neuronal circuitry and comprehensively map cell types. This data holds valuable information that extends beyond initial analyses, opening avenues for variation studies and robust classification of cell types in specific brain regions. However, the size and heterogeneity of these imaging data have historically made storage, sharing, and analysis difficult for individual investigators and impractical on a broad community scale. Here, we introduce the Brain Image Library (BIL), a public resource serving the neuroscience community that provides a persistent centralized repository for brain microscopy data. Background: Patients who undergo hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) require lower extremity immobilization for an extended period of time. Periods of immobilization combined with surgery have been associated with decreased muscle mass and bone mineral density (BMD)., Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to characterize postoperative body composition and BMD changes after arthroscopy for FAI. It was hypothesized that both lean mass and BMD would decrease postoperatively and then normalize over time., Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4., Methods: This was a retrospective review of 23 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes who underwent hip arthroscopy between 2017 and 2019 and had a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan preoperatively and at 3, 6, 12, or 24 months postoperatively. Linear mixed-effects models were used to compare pre- with postoperative lean and fat mass values for the total body and total leg (both operative and nonoperative sides) as well as trunk, pelvic, and spinal BMD. For total-leg, femur, and femoral BMD, linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the influence of time, side (operative vs nonoperative), and their interaction on each outcome measure., Results: Regarding pelvic BMD, compared with baseline (mean, 1.41 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.33-1.49]), significant decreases were seen at postoperative 3 months (mean, 1.36 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.28-1.45 g/cm 2 ]; P < .001) and 6 months (mean, 1.39 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.27-1.52 g/cm 2 ]; P < .01) but not at 12 months (mean, 1.42 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.33-1.51 g/cm 2 ]; P = .319). Total-leg BMD for the operative side increased significantly from baseline (mean, 1.52 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.43-1.61 g/cm 2 ]) to ≥2 years postoperatively (mean, 1.56 g/cm 2 [95% CI, 1.47-1.65 g/cm 2 ]) ( P = .005). Combined leg fat mass was increased from baseline (mean, 6427 g [95% CI, 4855-7999 g]) to ≥2 years (mean, 11645 g [95% CI, 7845-15,446 g]) ( P < .01). There were no significant differences in total-body fat or lean mass or combined-leg lean mass., Conclusion: In this patient population, a postoperative decrease in pelvic BMD that resolved by 12 months and an increase in total-leg BMD on the operative side at ≥2 years were observed. Serotype 3 (T3) strains of mammalian orthoreovirus (reovirus) spread to the central nervous system to infect the brain and cause lethal encephalitis in newborn mice. Although reovirus targets several regions in the brain, susceptibility to infection is not uniformly distributed. The neuronal subtypes and anatomic sites targeted throughout the brain are not precisely known. Reovirus binds several attachment factors and entry receptors, including sialic acid (SA)-containing glycans and paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B (PirB). While these receptors are not required for infection of some types of neurons, reovirus engagement of these receptors can influence neuronal infection in certain contexts. To identify patterns of T3 neurotropism, we used microbial identification after passive tissue clearance and hybridization chain reaction to stain reovirus-infected cells throughout intact, optically transparent brains of newborn mice. Three-dimensional reconstructions revealed in detail the sites targeted by reovirus throughout the brain volume, including dense infection of the midbrain and hindbrain. Using reovirus mutants incapable of binding SA and mice lacking PirB expression, we found that neither SA nor PirB is required for the infection of various brain regions. However, SA may confer minor differences in infection that vary by region. Collectively, these studies indicate that many regions in the brain of newborn mice are susceptible to reovirus and that patterns of reovirus infection are not dependent on reovirus receptors SA and PirB.IMPORTANCENeurotropic viruses invade the central nervous system (CNS) and target various cell types to cause disease manifestations, such as meningitis, myelitis, or encephalitis. Infections of the CNS are often difficult to treat and can lead to lasting sequelae or death. Mammalian orthoreovirus (reovirus) causes age-dependent lethal encephalitis in many young mammals. Reovirus infects neurons in several different regions of the brain. However, the complete pattern of CNS infection is not understood. We found that reovirus targets almost all regions of the brain and that patterns of tropism are not dependent on receptors sialic acid and paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B. Background: The use of bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts is common in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). After ACLR, patients typically progress through specific rehabilitation milestones, and graft type may play a role in patient progression., Purpose: To compare the time to meet rehabilitation milestones between BPTB and HT autografts after ACLR., Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3., Methods: This was a single-institution study on patients who underwent ACLR with either BPTB or HT autograft between June 2018 and July 2021. The primary outcomes were time to meet return-to-sport criteria, including >90% limb symmetry index (LSI) for isokinetic quadriceps and hamstring strength, horizontal hop, 4-crossover hop, and single-hop height. The time to satisfaction of each criterion was compared between graft groups using Wilcoxon tests and Cox proportional hazards models., Results: Included in the analysis were 410 participants who underwent ACLR with either BPTB (n = 232) or HT (n = 178). The BPTB group took longer to achieve >90% LSI for knee extension than HT (11.1 ± 4.1 vs 7.63 ± 2.8 months; P < .001). Similarly, the BPTB group took longer than the HT group to achieve >90% LSI for horizontal hop (11.4 ± 3.5 vs 9.82 ± 2.8 months; P < .001), 4-crossover hop (11.8 ± 3.6 vs 10.4 ± 2.8 months; P = .002), and single-hop height testing (11 ± 3.7 vs 8.81 ± 3.2 months; P < .001). The median time to achieve >90% LSI for hamstring strength was similar between groups (7.18 ± 3 vs 7.56 ± 3.1 months; P = .2)., Conclusion: Patients that underwent ACLR with BPTB autograft took longer than patients with HT to meet commonly used postoperative rehabilitation milestones. Background: Young adults report increased rates of anxiety and depression than other age groups. Furthermore, young adult athletes experience additional stressors that may negatively impact their mental health. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among Division I collegiate athletes and the influences of sex, sport type, and distance from home., Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that self-reported levels of anxiety and depression would increase among this population during this timeframe., Study Design: Cross-sectional., Level of Evidence: Level 3., Methods: Participants included 792 incoming Division I collegiate athletes. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores were completed by all incoming student athletes at a single institution as part of their preparticipation examination over 5 years. Both survey scores were categorized into different levels of severity and separately compared with chi-square tests. Continuous scores were modeled separately using negative binomial regression models including year, sex, sport type, and home location as covariates., Results: Results showed consistent levels of anxiety and depression over time. Female athletes reported higher levels of both anxiety and depression than male athletes, and individual sport athletes reported higher levels of depression than team sport athletes. Distance from home was not associated with anxiety or depression levels., Conclusion: Overall, levels of anxiety and depression did not change in this population over this time period. Purpose: Survivors of blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) require life-long follow-up involving both tertiary transplant and primary care services. This paper explores the attitudes and preferences of BMT survivors and their carers regarding the transition from BMT centre care to primary care., Methods: This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with BMT survivors and carers from New South Wales, Australia. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed., Results: Twenty-two BMT survivors and six carers were interviewed. Two themes emerged: (1) 'Relationships with health professionals' and (2) 'Challenges of long-term care'. Participants, particularly rural/regional survivors, had diverse views on the availability of community BMT expertise and identified a range of strategies to optimise care for BMT survivors., Conclusions: These results highlight the importance BMT survivors and carers place on their relationships with, and ongoing access to, specialised BMT teams for long-term care. While some are happy to receive community-based care, concerns exist about the capacity of primary care providers, particularly in rural and regional areas. Improved support, communication and coordination between BMT centres and primary care may help facilitate a person-centred, sustainable shared care model. Provider education, use of telehealth and clear delineation of roles and responsibilities may assist in this transition., Implications for Cancer Survivors: As BMT survivors live longer post-treatment, transitions of care and sustainable long-term care models are needed. A shared care approach, integrating specialised BMT teams and local primary care, may optimise outcomes but requires further development to balance accessibility, preferences, and specialised care needs., (© 2024. Background: In patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), mental health has been implicated in both symptom severity and postoperative outcomes. However, there are limited data regarding the independent influences of baseline mental health and hip pathology on patient-reported outcomes over time after hip arthroscopy., Purpose: To evaluate the association between mental health and structural hip pathology with pain, hip function, and quality of life (QOL)., Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3., Methods: Patient records from a single surgeon's hip outcomes registry were retrospectively reviewed. Mental health was evaluated using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Anxiety and Depression scores. Pain was evaluated with the Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation score for Activities of Daily Living (SANE-ADL), while hip-related QOL was evaluated with the 12-item International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12). Hip function was assessed with the Hip Outcome Score (HOS) Sport-Specific (SS) and ADL subscales. Separate mixed models were used to predict pain, QOL, and hip function, including hip pathology measures (size of labral tear, grade of chondral damage, preoperative alpha angle), anxiety, depression, and time as fixed effects and individuals as a random effect., Results: A total of 312 patients were included in this study. The preoperative alpha angle, degree of intraoperative cartilage damage, and size of the labral tear were not associated with pain or QOL ( P > .05 for all). However, higher levels of anxiety and depression were significantly associated with lower SANE-ADL scores (estimate ± SE) (anxiety: -0.59 ± 0.07, P < .0001; depression: -0.64 ± 0.08, P < .0001), iHOT-12 scores (anxiety: -0.72 ± 0.07, P < .0001; depression: -0.72 ± 0.08, P < .0001), HOS-SS scores (anxiety: -0.68 ± 0.09, P < .0001; depression: -0.57 ± 0.10, P < .0001), and HOS-ADL scores (anxiety: -0.43 ± 0.05, P < .0001; depression: -0.43 ± 0.06, P < .0001)., Conclusion: Patients had similar improvements in pain scores, QOL, and hip function after hip arthroscopy for FAI irrespective of their degree of hip pathology. Additionally, preoperative symptoms of anxiety and depression symptoms were associated with greater pain, decreased QOL, and worse hip function both pre- and postoperatively, independent of the degree of hip pathology. Background: Self-reported wellbeing measures such as mood and soreness have been identified as predictors of injury risk. However, most research has focused on investigating time-loss injuries even though nontime-loss injuries are more prevalent., Hypothesis: Impairments in sleep and subjective wellbeing would be associated with increased injury for both time-loss and nontime-loss injuries., Study Design: Prospective longitudinal study., Level of Evidence: Level 3., Methods: During 2022, 127 athletes completed a daily survey that inquired about training load and sleep from the previous day along with mood, stress, and soreness on the current day. Incidence of injury was also monitored using documentation provided by athletes' respective athletic trainers. Mixed effect models were used to analyze the relationship between wellbeing and sleep measures with injury., Results: Self-reported wellbeing, based most closely on soreness the day of injury, by National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 collegiate athletes was predictive of time-loss injuries, whereas no significant relationship was identified for nontime-loss injuries. To meet the high energy demands of brain function, cerebral blood flow (CBF) parallels changes in neuronal activity by a mechanism known as neurovascular coupling (NVC). However, which neurons play a role in mediating NVC is not well understood. Here, we identify in mice and humans a specific population of cortical GABAergic neurons that co-express neuronal nitric oxide synthase and tachykinin receptor 1 (Tacr1). Through whole-tissue clearing, we demonstrate that Tacr1 neurons extend local and long-range projections across functionally connected cortical areas. We show that whisker stimulation elicited Tacr1 neuron activity in the barrel cortex through feedforward excitatory pathways. Additionally, through optogenetic experiments, we demonstrate that Tacr1 neurons are instrumental in mediating CBF through the relaxation of mural cells in a similar fashion to whisker stimulation. Finally, by electron microscopy, we observe that Tacr1 processes contact astrocytic endfeet. There is a limited body of evidence for haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) in older patients. Previous studies have used a high proportion of bone marrow-derived grafts and a variety of conditioning regimens. In Australia and New Zealand, haplo-HCST is predominantly performed using peripheral blood (PB) with universal use of post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy). To characterize the outcomes of older recipients undergoing haplo-HSCT for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Data were collected through the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry (ABMTRR) for patients aged 65 or older receiving a PB haplo-HSCT for AML/MDS between January 2010 and July 2020. A total of 44 patients were included in the analysis. The median follow-up time was 377 days. The median age was 68 (range 65-74) with a median Karnofsky performance status of 90. Thirty patients (68.2%) had AML, whereas 14 (31.8%) had MDS. The median donor age was 40. The most common conditioning regimen was nonmyeloablative fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and total body irradiation (75%); the remainder of the patients received either melphalan- or busulfan-based regimens, and the majority were reduced intensity, with only 2 patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning. All patients received post-transplantation cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil, with the majority also receiving tacrolimus (90.5%) and the remainder receiving cyclosporine (9.5%). No patients received anti-thymocyte globulin. Neutrophil engraftment was achieved in 97.6% of patients at a median of 18 days, whereas platelet engraftment was achieved in 92.7% of patients at a median of 28 days. The cumulative incidences of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation and CMV disease were 52.5% and 5.1% at 1 year. The incidence of grade 2-4 acute Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) was 18.2%. The incidence of chronic GVHD at 2 years was 40.7%, with extensive chronic GVHD occurring in 17.7% of patients. The incidences of relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) at 2 years were 8.8% and 20.7% respectively. The leading causes of death were infection (64.7%) followed by relapse (14.2%). The 2-year overall survival was 74%. Relapse free survival and GVHD free, relapse free survival at 2 years was 70% and 48%. Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the benefits of sport participation with no sport participation during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the moderating effects of race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), and physical activity (PA) on mental health in adolescent athletes., Hypothesis: Sport participation would be associated with greater improvements in mental health for athletes from racial and ethnic minority and lower SES groups compared with White and high SES groups. PA would mediate <30% of the mental health benefits of sport participation., Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Level of Evidence: Level 4., Methods: In May 2021, adolescent athletes completed an online survey (demographics, sport participation, measures of anxiety and depression, PA). Participants were classified as those who played sports (PLY) and those who did not (DNP). Mental health symptoms for the PLY and DNP groups were compared via analysis of variance models that controlled for demographic variables. Moderating analyses assessed the interaction of sport participation status by (1) race and ethnicity (White/non-White) and (2) SES (high/low) with mental health. Mediation analyses assessed the degree that PA scores explained the differences in anxiety and depression between the 2 groups., Results: Participants included 4874 adolescent athletes (52% female; age, 16.1 ± 1.3 years; PLY, 91%). Athletes who returned to sport from racial minority groups and low SES had greater decreases in anxiety (race and ethnicity: interaction estimate (b) = -1.18 ± 0.6, P = 0.04; SES, b = -1.23 ± 0.5, P = 0.02), and depression (race and ethnicity: b = -1.19 ± 0.6, P = 0.05; SES, b = -1.21 ± 0.6, P = 0.03) compared with White and high SES athletes, respectively. Abstract: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with immunodeficiency, characterized by uncertain treatment approaches and an unfavorable prognosis. We conducted a multicenter, international, retrospective cohort study, aiming to characterize the clinical features, risk factors, and outcomes of patients with PBL. Data were collected from 22 institutions across 4 countries regarding patients diagnosed with PBL between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2020. Survival risk factors were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate regression models. Overall survival (OS) was calculated using Kaplan-Meier statistics. First-line treatment regimens were stratified into standard- and higher-intensity regimens, and based on whether they incorporated a proteasome inhibitor (PI). A total of 281 patients (median age, 55 years) were included. Immunodeficiency of any kind was identified in 144 patients (51%), and 99 patients (35%) had HIV-positive results. The 5-year OS for the entire cohort was 36% (95% confidence interval, 30%-42%). In multivariate analysis, inferior OS was associated with Epstein-Barr virus-negative lymphoma, poor performance status, advanced stage, and bone marrow involvement. In an independent univariate analysis, the international prognostic index was associated with OS outcomes. Neither immunosuppression nor HIV infection, specifically, influenced OS. Among patients treated with curative intent (n = 234), the overall response rate was 72%. Neither the intensity of the treatment regimen nor the inclusion of PIs in first-line therapy was associated with OS. In this large retrospective study of patients with PBL, we identified novel risk factors for survival. The optical properties of light-absorbing materials in optical shutter devices are critical to the use of such platforms for optical applications. We demonstrate switchable optical properties of dyes and nanoparticles in liquid-based electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices. Our work uses narrow-band-absorbing dyes and nanoparticles, which are appealing for spectral-filtering applications targeting specific wavelengths while maintaining device transparency at other wavelengths. Low-voltage actuation of boron dipyromethene (BODIPY) dyes and nanoparticles (Ag and CdSe) was demonstrated without degradation of the light-absorbing materials. Three BODIPY dyes were used, namely Abs 503 nm, 535 nm and 560 nm for dye 1 (BODIPY-core), 2 (I 2 BODIPY) and 3 (BODIPY-TMS), respectively. Reversible and low-voltage (≤20 V) switching of dye optical properties was observed as a function of device pixel dimensions (300 × 900, 200 × 600 and 150 × 450 µm). Low-voltage and reversible switching was also demonstrated for plasmonic and semiconductor nanoparticles, such as CdSe nanotetrapods (abs 508 nm), CdSe nanoplatelets (Abs 461 and 432 nm) and Ag nanoparticles (Abs 430 nm). Nanoparticle-based devices showed minimal hysteresis as well as faster relaxation times. The study presented can thus be extended to a variety of nanomaterials and dyes having the desired optical properties.

Large constellations of bright artificial satellites in low Earth orbit pose significant challenges to ground-based astronomy 1 . Current orbiting constellation satellites have brightnesses between apparent magnitudes 4 and 6, whereas in the near-infrared Ks band, they can reach magnitude 2 (ref. 2 ). Satellite operators, astronomers and other users of the night sky are working on brightness mitigation strategies 3,4 . Radio emissions induce further potential risk to ground-based radio telescopes that also need to be evaluated. Here we report the outcome of an international optical observation campaign of a prototype constellation satellite, AST SpaceMobile's BlueWalker 3. BlueWalker 3 features a 64.3 m 2 phased-array antenna as well as a launch vehicle adaptor (LVA) 5 . The peak brightness of the satellite reached an apparent magnitude of 0.4. This made the new satellite one of the brightest objects in the night sky. Additionally, the LVA reached an apparent V-band magnitude of 5.5, four times brighter than the current International Astronomical Union recommendation of magnitude 7 (refs. 3,6 ); it jettisoned on 10 November 2022 (Universal Time), and its orbital ephemeris was not publicly released until 4 days later. Context: Although the return to sports during COVID-19 has been associated with improvements in mental health and quality of life (QOL), whether these benefits are primarily due to increases in physical activity (PA) is unknown., Objective: To determine whether PA increases were responsible for the improvements in mental health and QOL among adolescents who returned to sport during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Wisconsin secondary schools., Patients or Other Participants: A total of 559 adolescent athletes (age = 15.7 + 1.2 years, females = 43.6%) from 44 schools completed a survey in October 2020., Main Outcome Measure(s): Demographic information, whether they had returned to sport participation, school instruction type, anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), QOL (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0), and PA (Hospital for Special Surgery Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale). Mediation analysis was used to assess whether the relationships between sport status and anxiety, depression, and QOL were mediated by PA., Results: At the time of the study, 171 (31%) had returned to play and 388 (69%) had not. Athletes who had returned to play had less anxiety (3.6 ± 0.4 versus 8.2 ± 0.6, P < .001) and depression (4.2 ± 0.4 versus 7.3 ± 0.6, P < .001) and higher QOL (88.1 ± 1.0 versus 80.2 ± 1.4, P < .001) and more PA (24.0 ± 0.5 versus 16.3 ± 0.7, P < .001). Physical activity explained a significant, but small, proportion of the difference in depression (22.1%, P = .02) and QOL (16.0%, P = .048) but not anxiety (6.6%, P = .20) between athletes who had and those who had not returned to play., Conclusions: Increased PA was responsible for only a small portion of the improvements in depression and QOL among athletes who returned to sports. A 12-week feeding trial with juvenile red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ) fed high-soybean meal (SBM) diets was conducted to investigate a putative biomarker of nutritional imbalance, N-formimino-L-glutamate (FIGLU). Three fishmeal-free, 60% SBM pelleted diets (named B12, Fol, and Met, respectively) were tested to evaluate the effects on growth performance and tissue metabolite profiles of supplementation of vitamin B 12 (0.012 mg/kg), folate (10 mg/kg), methionine (1 g/kg) respectively, above basal supplementation levels. A fourth SBM-based diet (named B12/Fol/Met) was formulated with a combination of B 12 , folate, and methionine to attain the above-mentioned target concentrations. A fifth 60% SBM diet (named FWS) with methionine supplementation (1 g/kg above basal supplementation levels), enriched with taurine, lysine and threonine as well as minerals, was also tested. This diet contained formulation targets and additives which have allowed for replacing fishmeal with plant proteins in rainbow trout feeds. Control diets included a fishmeal-based diet (named FM), an unsupplemented basal 60% SBM diet (named SBM60), and a "natural" diet (named N) made up of equal parts of fish (cigar minnows), squid and shrimp as a positive reference for growth performance. Formulated feeds contained approximately 37% total crude protein, approximately 14% total crude lipid and were energetically balanced. Standard growth performance metrics were measured, and tissues (liver, muscle) were collected at week 12 to evaluate diet-induced metabolic changes using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics. Our results show that the FWS diet outperformed all other SBM diets and the FM diet under all performance metrics ( P  < 0.05). FIGLU was not detected in fish fed the N diet but was detected in those fed the SBM diets and the FM diet. Fish fed the FWS diet and the Met diet showed lower hepatic levels of FIGLU compared with the other SBM-based diets ( P  < 0.05), suggesting that among the different supplementation regimes, methionine supplementation was associated with lower FIGLU levels. The FWS diet produced tissue metabolite profiles that were more similar to those of fish fed the N diet. A growing community is constructing a next-generation file format (NGFF) for bioimaging to overcome problems of scalability and heterogeneity. Organized by the Open Microscopy Environment (OME), individuals and institutes across diverse modalities facing these problems have designed a format specification process (OME-NGFF) to address these needs. This paper brings together a wide range of those community members to describe the cloud-optimized format itself-OME-Zarr-along with tools and data resources available today to increase FAIR access and remove barriers in the scientific process. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powerful cosmic explosions, signaling the death of massive stars. Among them, GRB 221009A is by far the brightest burst ever observed. Because of its enormous energy ( E iso ≈ 10 55 erg) and proximity ( z ≈ 0.15), GRB 221009A is an exceptionally rare event that pushes the limits of our theories. We present multiwavelength observations covering the first 3 months of its afterglow evolution. The x-ray brightness decays as a power law with slope ≈ t -1.66 , which is not consistent with standard predictions for jetted emission. We attribute this behavior to a shallow energy profile of the relativistic jet. A similar trend is observed in other energetic GRBs, suggesting that the most extreme explosions may be powered by structured jets launched by a common central engine.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (SOS/VOD) is an established complication in patients undergoing allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Defibrotide is an effective and safe pharmacologic option for treating diagnosed SOS/VOD. By exploring data provided to the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry (ABMTRR) by centers in Australia and New Zealand, this study aimed to describe the incidence of SOS/VOD and patterns of defibrotide use from 2016 to 2020. Patients who underwent allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation between 2016 and 2020 were identified from the ABMTRR. Data were extracted for a total of 3346 patients, 2692 from adult centers and 654 from pediatric centers, with a median follow-up of 21.5 months and 33.3 months, respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the patient population, including the incidence of SOS/VOD and defibrotide use. Comparisons were made between patients without SOS/VOD and those with SOS/VOD, divided into defibrotide and no defibrotide cohorts. Associations with overall survival (OS) and day 100 survival with such variables as sex, age, disease at transplantation, stem cell source, conditioning agents, SOS/VOD diagnosis, and use of defibrotide, were determined. The reported incidence of SOS/VOD was 4.1% in adult centers and 11.5% in pediatric centers. Defibrotide was administered to 74.8% of adult patients and 97.3% of pediatric patients with SOS/VOD. Significant variability in the use, dosage, and duration of defibrotide was seen across the adult centers. The day 100 survival rate and median OS for patients managed with defibrotide was 51.8% and 103 days, respectively, for adult patients and 90.4% and not reached, respectively, for pediatric patients. In adults, older age at transplantation, an HLA-matched nonsibling relative donor, and a diagnosis of SOS/VOD treated with defibrotide were associated with reduced OS. In pediatric patients, the patient and transplantation characteristics associated with reduced OS were a diagnosis of SOS/VOD and a ≥2 HLA-mismatched related donor. Patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have a dismal median overall survival (OS) after failing hypomethylating agent (HMA) treatment. There is no standard of care for patients after HMA therapy failure; hence, there is a critical need for effective therapeutic strategies. Herein, we present the safety and efficacy of venetoclax + azacitidine in patients with R/R MDS. This phase 1b, open-label, multicenter study enrolled patients ≥18 years. Patients were treated with escalating doses of oral venetoclax: 100, 200, or 400 mg daily for 14 days every 28-day cycle. Azacitidine was administered on Days 1-7 every cycle at 75 mg/m 2 /day intravenously/subcutaneously. Responses were assessed per modified 2006 International Working Group (IWG) criteria. Forty-four patients (male 86%, median age 74 years) received venetoclax + azacitidine treatment. Median follow-up was 21.2 months. Hematological adverse events of Grade ≥ 3 included febrile neutropenia (34%), thrombocytopenia (32%), neutropenia (27%), and anemia (18%). Pneumonia (23%) was the most common Grade ≥ 3 infection. Marrow responses were seen including complete remission (CR, n = 3, 7%) and marrow CR (mCR, n = 14, 32%); 36% (16/44) achieved transfusion independence (TI) for RBCs and/or platelets, and 43% (6/14) with mCR achieved hematological improvement (HI). The median time to CR/mCR was 1.2 months, and the median duration of response for CR + mCR was 8.6 months. Median OS was 12.6 months. Context: Sport cancellations early in the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant negative effect on the health of US adolescents. The effect of restarting sports during the pandemic has not been described., Objective: To identify the effect of sport participation on the health of adolescents before and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Sample recruited via social media., Patients or Other Participants: Wisconsin adolescent athletes., Main Outcome Measure(s): Participants provided information regarding their age, sex, and sport(s) involvement and completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Item to assess depression symptoms, the Hospital for Special Surgery Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale to measure physical activity, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 to measure quality of life (QoL). Data were collected in spring 2021 (Spring21; n = 1906, age = 16.0 ± 1.2 years, females = 48.8%), when interscholastic sports had fully resumed, and were compared with similar cohorts of adolescent athletes at 2 time points: (1) spring 2020 (Spring20; n = 3243, age = 16.2 ± 1.2 years, females = 57.9%) when sports were cancelled and (2) 2016-2018 (PreCOVID-19) before the pandemic (n = 5231, age = 15.7 ± 1.1 years, females = 65.0%). Comparisons were conducted via analysis-of-variance models and ordinal regressions with age and sex as covariates., Results: The prevalence of moderate to severe depression was lower in Spring21 than in Spring20 but higher than in PreCOVID-19 (PreCOVID-19 = 5.3%, Spring20 = 37.8%, Spring21 = 22.8%; P < .001). Physical activity scores (mean [95% CI]) were higher in Spring21 than in Spring20 but lower than in PreCOVID-19 (PreCOVID-19 = 23.1 [22.7, 23.5], Spring20 = 13.5 [13.3, 13.7], Spring21 = 21.9 [21.6, 22.2]). Patients with post-haemopoietic stem cell transplant or chimeric antigen receptor T -cell (CAR-T) therapy face a significant risk of morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 because of their immunosuppressed state. As case numbers in Australia and New Zealand continue to rise, guidance on management in this high-risk population is needed. Whilst we have learned much from international colleagues who faced high infection rates early in the pandemic, guidance relevant to local health system structures, medication availability and emerging therapies is essential to equip physicians to manage our patients optimally., (© 2022 The Authors. Context: High schools and youth sport organizations that restarted participation in the fall of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic relied on information sources to develop risk-mitigation procedures., Objective: To compare the risk-mitigation procedures and information sources used by high school athletic departments and youth sport organizations., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Surveys of high school and youth sport organization programs from across the United States., Patients or Other Participants: A total of 1296 high schools and 584 youth sport organizations, representing 519 241 adolescent athletes, responded to the surveys., Main Outcome Measure(s): Surveys regarding restarting sport, COVID-19 cases, risk-reduction procedures, and the information sources used to develop risk-reduction plans in the fall of 2020 were distributed to high school athletic directors and youth sport directors throughout the United States. The proportions of high schools and youth sport organizations using different risk-reduction procedures and information sources were compared using the χ2 test., Results: High schools used more risk-reduction procedures than did youth sport organizations (high schools = 7.1 ± 2.1 versus youth sport organizations = 6.3 ± 2.4; P < .001) and were more likely than youth sport organizations to use symptom monitoring (high schools = 93% versus youth sport organizations = 85%, χ2 = 26.3; P < .001), temperature checks on site (66% versus 49%, χ2 = 53.4; P < .001), face masks for athletes during play (37% versus 23%, χ2 = 38.1; P < .001) and when off the field (81% versus 71%, χ2 = 26.1; P < .001), social distancing for staff (81% versus 68%, χ2 = 43.3; P < .001) and athletes off the field (83% versus 68%, χ2 = 57.6; P < .001), and increased facility disinfection (92% versus 70%, χ2 = 165.0; P < .001). Youth sport organizations relied more on information from sport national governing bodies than did high schools (youth sport organizations = 52% versus high schools = 10%, χ2 = 411.0; P < .001), whereas high schools were more likely to use information from sources such as the National Athletic Trainers' Association (high schools = 20% versus youth sport organizations = 6%, χ2 = 55.20; P < .001) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (high schools = 72% versus youth sport organizations = 15%, χ2 = 553.00; P < .001) for determining risk-reduction strategies., Conclusions: High schools and youth sport organizations reported using a broad range of risk-reduction procedures, but the average number was higher among high schools than youth sport organizations. Use of information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health authorities was high overall, but use of information from professional health care organizations was low. Colic remains the number one cause of mortality in horses, and large colon displacement including colonic volvulus is one of the leading causes for equine hospitalization and surgery. Currently, there is not an adequate model to study the pathophysiology of this condition. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to determine if subserosal implantation of bioinert microchips in the large intestine would be detectable by a RFID (radio-frequency identification) receiver when the implanted microchips were adjacent to the body wall, thus identifying the location of the colon within the abdomen. A horse with no history of gastrointestinal disease underwent a ventral midline celiotomy to implant twelve bioinert microchips into the subserosa at predetermined locations within the large colon and cecum. A RFID scanner was used to monitor the location of the colon via transcutaneous identification 1-3 times daily for a one-month period. Following humane euthanasia, a postmortem examination of the horse was performed to assess microchip implantation sites for migration and histologic assessment. Eleven out of the 12 implanted microchips were successfully identified transcutaneously at occurrences as high as 100%. Odds ratios were calculated for the likelihood of identifying each chip in a location different from its most common location. Microchips implanted into the subserosa of the equine large colon can be used as a means of identifying the approximate location of the equine large colon via transcutaneous identification with an RFID scanner.

Background: Equine influenza virus is a common cause of respiratory disease in equids. Few reports describe clinical presentation and disease progression in donkeys., Hypothesis/objectives: Describe the clinical and diagnostic findings, outcome, and pathologic lesions associated with influenza pneumonia in donkeys., Animals: Thirteen unvaccinated donkeys ranging from 1 week to 12 years of age and sharing clinical signs and exposure history., Methods: Retrospective case series. Medical records from June to July 2020 at the Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and collaborating referring veterinary practices were reviewed. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular testing, virus isolation, and partial genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the virus., Results: Survival in donkeys <1 year old was 16.6% (1/6) whereas survival in animals >1 year of age was 85.7% (6/7). Hemagglutinin gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis confirmed a contemporary clade 1 Florida sublineage H3 virus as the causative agent., Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Clinical signs of equine influenza virus infection in donkeys are similar to those observed in horses. Prognosis for survival generally is good, but deaths have been observed especially in foals born to seronegative dams. Objective: To examine sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) awareness and emergency preparedness for SCA in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) youth basketball teams., Design: Cross-sectional survey of AAU coaches and administrators., Setting: Random sampling of AAU club teams across the United States., Participants: AAU club coaches and/or administrators., Interventions: Electronic survey (Qualtrics) accessed online and by cell phone. Each coach/administrator was invited to participate via email up to 3 times, spaced approximately 5 days apart., Main Outcome Measures: Established and practiced emergency action plan (EAP), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and automated external defibrillator (AED) access., Results: A total of 53/449 (12%) respondents completed the survey. Only 6% of responding AAU clubs had a written EAP and practiced it on an annual basis. Only 35% of clubs required CPR training for their coaches. Automated external defibrillator were available at practices and games in only 45% and 35% of AAU clubs, respectively. Over 50% of clubs did not have an affiliated athletic trainer or medical director., Conclusion: The vast majority of AAU clubs in this study lack proper emergency preparedness for SCA.
