Abstract: Experimental cross sections for the He4(e,e′p)X reactions in the missing energy range from 0.017 to 0.022 GeV and up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/c at xB=1.24 and Q2=2 (GeV/c)2 are reported. The data are compared to relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations for the He4(e,e′p)H3 channel. Significantly more events are observed for pm≥0.45 GeV/c than are predicted by the theoretical model, and striking fluctuations in the ratio of data to the theoretical model around pm=0.3GeV/c are possible signals of initial-state multinucleon correlations.

Abstract: Short-range correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high-momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high-momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final-state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from Ca48 to Ca40 in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs.

Abstract: We present new data probing short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei through the measurement of electron scattering off high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. The inclusive He4/He3 cross section ratio is observed to be both x and Q2 independent for 1.52, our data support the hypothesis that a previous claim of three-nucleon correlation dominance was an artifact caused by the limited resolution of the measurement. While 3N-SRCs appear to have an important contribution, our data show that isolating 3N-SRCs is significantly more complicated than for 2N-SRCs.

6. Digital Ethnography as a Way to Explore Information Grounds on Twitter

Abstract: Information grounds are social settings where information, people, and place come together to create information flow within a physical environment (Karen E. Pettigrew, 1998). Information grounds also facilitate the opportunistic discovery of information within social settings created temporarily by people gathered for some purpose other than seeking information, but the social environment stimulates spontaneous information sharing (K. E. Pettigrew, 1999), such as in hair salons, doctor's waiting rooms and other public places. Professional and scholarly use of social media is a rapidly emerging area of research. In this regard, qualitative analysis of data gathered from Twitter is a relatively unexplored area of Library and Information Science (LIS) research. This paper details the results of a qualitative study of Twitter using digital ethnography, in order to investigate the use of Twitter by IT professionals in forming communities of practice. This study is relevant to Library and Information Science (LIS) research as LIS professionals are part of the IT community of practice. This study used information grounds theory (K. E. Fisher, 2005) to explore Twitter as an online information ground. The research used online observation - conceptualised here as online ethnography or digital ethnography - and interviews to collect data. The online observations helped the researcher to understand the norms and culture of the participants along with patterns of behaviour. Interviews were used to understand the information grounds of the virtual environment through the participants' individual perspectives and their information experiences. A total of eleven participants were interviewed after a total of 734 tweets from these same participants were downloaded and analysed. Abstract: Virtual Compton scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at the Jefferson Laboratory using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction ep -> ep gamma. This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P-LL - P-TT/epsilon and P-LT and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E) (Q(2)) and beta(M) (Q(2)) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q(2) = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q(2) range and point to their nontrivial behavior.

Abstract: We present the scaling properties of Lambda, Xi, and Omega in midrapidity Au+Au collisions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at root s(NN)=200 GeV. The yield of multistrange baryons per participant nucleon increases from peripheral to central collisions more rapidly than that of Lambda, indicating an increase of the strange-quark density of the matter produced. The strange phase-space occupancy factor gamma(s) approaches unity for the most central collisions. Moreover, the nuclear modification factors of p, Lambda, and Xi are consistent with each other for 2 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c in agreement with a scenario of hadron formation from constituent quark degrees of freedom.

Abstract: We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at midrapidity in root s = 200 GeV proton-proton (p + p) collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass (m(T) = root PT2 + m(2)) scaling of hadron production in p + p collisions seems to break down at higher m(T) and that there is a difference in the shape of the m(T) spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe midrapidity antibaryon to baryon ratios near unity for Lambda and Xi baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transverse momentum < p(T)> on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particle mass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominated particle production. The data are compared with previous measurements made at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and Intersecting Storage Rings and in Fermilab experiments and with leading-order and next-to-leading-order string fragmentation model predictions. We infer from these comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from p + p collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jets rather than from quark jets.

Abstract: We study the energy dependense of the transverse momentum (PT) spectra for charged pions, protons and anti-protons for An + An collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV. Data are presented at mid-rapidity (broken vertical bar y broken vertical bar < 0.5) for 0.2 < PT < 12 GeV/c. In the intermediate PT region (2 < PT < 6 GeV/c), the nuclear modification factor is higher at 62.4 GeV than at 200 GeV, while at higher PT (PT > 7 GeV/c) the modification is similar for both energies. The p/pi(+) and (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios for central collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 GeV peak at PT similar or equal to 2 GeV/c. In the PT range where recombination is expected to dominate, the p/pi(+) ratios at 62.4 GeV are larger than at 200 GeV, while the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios are smaller. For PT > 2 GeV/c, the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios at the two beam energies are independent of P-T and centrality indicating that the dependence of the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratio on P-T does not change between 62.4 and 200 GeV. These findings challenge various models incorporating jet quenching and/or constituent quark coalescence. (C) 2007

Abstract: The STAR collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) reports measurements of the inclusive yield of nonphotonic electrons, which arise dominantly from semileptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, over a broad range of transverse momenta (1.2 < p(T)< 10 GeV/c) in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV. The nonphotonic electron yield exhibits an unexpectedly large suppression in central Au+Au collisions at high p(T), suggesting substantial heavy-quark energy loss at RHIC. The centrality and p(T) dependences of the suppression provide constraints on theoretical models of suppression.

Abstract: We present first measurements of the phi-meson elliptic flow (v(2)(p(T))) and high-statistics p(T) distributions for different centralities from root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In minimum bias collisions the v(2) of the phi meson is consistent with the trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the Omega to those of the phi as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model based on the recombination of thermal s quarks up to p(T)similar to 4 GeV/c, but disagrees at higher momenta. The nuclear modification factor (R-CP) of phi follows the trend observed in the K-S(0) mesons rather than in Lambda baryons, supporting baryon-meson scaling. These data are consistent with phi mesons in central Au+Au collisions being created via coalescence of thermalized s quarks and the formation of a hot and dense matter with partonic collectivity at RHIC.

Abstract: We report charged particle pair correlation analyses in the space of Delta phi (azimuth) and Delta eta (pseudorapidity), for central Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV in the STAR detector. The analysis involves unlike-sign charged pairs and like-sign charged pairs, which are transformed into charge-dependent (CD) signals and charge-independent (CI) signals. We present detailed parametrizations of the data. A model featuring dense gluonic hot spots as first proposed by Van Hove predicts that the observables under investigation would have sensitivity to such a substructure should it occur, and the model also motivates selection of transverse momenta in the range 0.8 < p(t)< 2.0 GeV/c. Both CD and CI correlations of high statistical significance are observed, and possible interpretations are discussed.

Abstract: We report the measurements of Sigma(1385) and Lambda(1520) production in p+p and Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV from the STAR Collaboration. The yields and the p(T) spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central Au+Au collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Abstract: We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth (eta, phi) bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse-momentum < pt > fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain p(t) autocorrelations on differences (eta(Delta), phi(Delta)) interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on (eta, phi). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary rapidly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au-Au collisions relative to peripheral or p-p collisions.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of pi(+/-), p, and (p) over bar p up to 12 GeV/c at midrapidity in centrality selected Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented. In central Au + Au collisions, both pi(+/-) and p((p) over bar) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at p(T) greater than or similar to 4 GeV/c. Protons and antiprotons are less suppressed than pi(+/-), in the range 1.5 less than or similar to p(T) less than or similar to 6 GeV/c. The pi(-)/pi(+) and (p) over bar /p ratios show at most a weak pT dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/pi ratios in central Au + Au collisions approach the values in p + p and d + Au collisions at p(T) greater than or similar to 5 GeV/c. The results at high p(T) indicate that the partonic sources of pi(+/-), p, and (p) over bar have similar energy loss when traversing the nuclear medium.

Abstract: We report on p-Lambda, p-(Lambda) over bar, (p) over bar-Lambda, and (p) over bar-(Lambda) over bar correlation functions constructed in central Au-Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The proton and lambda source size is inferred from the p-Lambda and (p) over bar-(Lambda) over bar correlation functions. It is found to be smaller than the pion source size also measured by the STAR experiment at smaller transverse masses, in agreement with a scenario of a strong universal collective flow. The p-(Lambda) over bar and (p) over bar-Lambda correlation functions, which are measured for the first time, exhibit a large anticorrelation. Annihilation channels and/or a negative real part of the spin-averaged scattering length must be included in the final-state interactions calculation to reproduce the measured correlation function.

Abstract: The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports measurements of azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum (p(T)) charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at higher p(T) than reported previously. As p(T) is increased, a narrow, back-to-back peak emerges above the decreasing background, providing a clear dijet signal for all collision centralities studied. Using these correlations, we perform a systematic study of dijet production and suppression in nuclear collisions, providing new constraints on the mechanisms underlying partonic energy loss in dense matter.

Abstract: We report the STAR measurement of phi meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Using the event mixing technique, the phi spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the phi transverse momentum distributions from Au + An collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that phi production in central An + An collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions (< N-bin>). The systematics of < p(t)> versus centrality and the constant phi/K- ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for phi production. Abstract: Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of pi(+/-), K+/-, and p((p) over bar) from 200 GeV p + p and d + Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R-dAu) between protons (p + (p) over bar) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2 < p(T) < 3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p + (p) over bar)/h in minimum-bias d + Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au + Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Abstract: We measured the spin observables A(y), P, and S-NN' for the Pb-208(p,n)Bi-208 reaction at 135 MeV at laboratory angles of 0 degrees, 3 degrees, 6 degrees, and 9 degrees. Abstract: We report measurements of transverse momentum p(t) spectra for ten event multiplicity classes of p-p collisions at root s=200 GeV. By analyzing the multiplicity dependence we find that the spectrum shape can be decomposed into a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity and described by a Levy distribution on transverse mass m(t), and a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity squared and described by a Gaussian distribution on transverse rapidity y(t). The functional forms of the two parts are nearly independent of event multiplicity. The two parts can be identified with the soft and hard components of a two-component model of p-p collisions. This analysis then provides the first isolation of the hard component of the p(t) spectrum as a distribution of simple form on y(t).

Abstract: The 2023 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles hosted opportunities for researchers, scientists, and policy makers to reflect on the state of art of predicting fish distributions and consider the implications to the marine and aquatic environments of a changing climate. The outcome of one special interest group at the Symposium was a collection of questions, organized under five themes, which begin to capture the state of the field and identify priorities for research and management over the coming years. The five themes were Physiology, Mechanisms, Detect and Measure, Manage, and Wider Ecosystems. The questions, 25 of them, addressed concepts which remain poorly understood, are data deficient, and/or are likely to be impacted in measurable or profound ways by climate change. Moving from the first to the last theme, the questions expanded in the scope of their considerations, from specific processes within the individual to ecosystem-wide impacts, but no one question is bigger than any other: each is important in detecting, understanding, and predicting fish distributions, and each will be impacted by an aspect of climate change. In this way, our questions, particularly those concerning unknown mechanisms and data deficiencies, aimed to offer a guide to other researchers, managers, and policy makers in the prioritization of future work as a changing climate is expected to have complex and disperse impacts on fish populations and distributions that will require a coordinated effort to address., (© 2024 Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

29. Age-specific survival rates, causes of death, and allowable take of golden eagles in the western United States.

Abstract: In the United States, the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act prohibits take of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) unless authorized by permit, and stipulates that all permitted take must be sustainable. Golden eagles are unintentionally killed in conjunction with many lawful activities (e.g., electrocution on power poles, collision with wind turbines). Managers who issue permits for incidental take of golden eagles must determine allowable take levels and manage permitted take accordingly. To aid managers in making these decisions in the western United States, we used an integrated population model to obtain estimates of golden eagle vital rates and population size, and then used those estimates in a prescribed take level (PTL) model to estimate the allowable take level. Estimated mean annual survival rates for golden eagles ranged from 0.70 (95% credible interval = 0.66-0.74) for first-year birds to 0.90 (0.88-0.91) for adults. Models suggested a high proportion of adult female golden eagles attempted to breed and breeding pairs fledged a mean of 0.53 (0.39-0.72) young annually. Population size in the coterminous western United States has averaged ~31,800 individuals for several decades, with λ = 1.0 (0.96-1.05). The PTL model estimated a median allowable take limit of ~2227 (708-4182) individuals annually given a management objective of maintaining a stable population. We estimate that take averaged 2572 out of 4373 (59%) deaths annually, based on a representative sample of transmitter-tagged golden eagles. For the subset of golden eagles that were recovered and a cause of death determined, anthropogenic mortality accounted for an average of 74% of deaths after their first year; leading forms of take over all age classes were shooting (~670 per year), collisions (~611), electrocutions (~506), and poisoning (~427). Although observed take overlapped the credible interval of our allowable take estimate and the population overall has been stable, our findings indicate that additional take, unless mitigated for, may not be sustainable. 30. Factors affecting fisher decisions: The case of the inshore fishery for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

Abstract: Fishery management relies on forecasts of fish abundance over time and space, on scales of months and kilometres. While much research has focussed on the drivers of fish populations, there has been less investigation of the decisions made day-to-day by fishers and their subsequent impact on fishing pressure. Studies that focus on the fisher decisions of smaller vessels may be particularly important due to the prevalence of smaller vessels in many fisheries and their potential vulnerability to bad weather and economic change. Here we outline a methodology with which to identify the factors affecting fisher decisions and success as well as quantifying their effects. We analyse first the decision of when to leave port, and then the success of the fishing trip. Fisher behaviour is here analysed in terms of the decisions taken by fishers in response to bio-physical and socio-economic changes and to illustrate our method, we describe its application to the under 10-meter fleet targeting sea bass in the UK. We document the effects of wave height and show with increasing wave height fewer vessels left port to go fishing. The decision to leave port was only substantially affected by time of high tide at one of the four ports investigated. We measured the success of fishing trips by the landings of sea bass (kg) per metre of vessel length. Fishing success was lower when wave height was greater and when fish price had increased relative to the previous trip. Fuel price was unimportant, but a large proportion of the variation in success was explained by variation between individual vessels, presumably due to variation in skipper ability or technical restrictions due to vessel characteristics. Abstract: In swine models, there are well-established protocols for creating a closed-chest myocardial infarction (MI) as well as protocols for characterization of cardiac function with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). This methods manuscript outlines a novel technique in CMR data acquisition utilizing smart-signal gradient recalled echo (GRE)-based array sequences in a free-breathing swine heart failure model allowing for both high spatial and temporal resolution imaging. Nine male Yucatan mini swine weighing 48.7 ± 1.6 kg at 58.2 ± 3.1 weeks old underwent the outlined imaging protocol before and 1-month after undergoing closed chest left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion/reperfusion. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at baseline was 59.3 ± 2.4% and decreased to 48.1 ± 3.7% 1-month post MI (P = 0.029). The average end-diastolic volume (EDV) at baseline was 55.2 ± 1.7 ml and increased to 74.2 ± 4.2 ml at 1-month post MI (P = 0.001). The resulting images from this novel technique and post-imaging analysis are presented and discussed. In a Yucatan swine model of heart failure via closed chest left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion/reperfusion, we found that CMR with GRE-based array sequences produced clinical-grade images with high spatial and temporal resolution in the free-breathing setting., (© 2022. 34. Epicardially Placed Bioengineered Cardiomyocyte Xenograft in Immune-Competent Rat Model of Heart Failure.

Abstract: Background: Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) are under preclinical investigation as a cell-based therapy for heart failure post-myocardial infarction. In a previous study, tissue-engineered cardiac grafts were found to improve hosts' cardiac electrical and mechanical functions. However, the durability of effect, immune response, and in vitro properties of the tissue graft remained uncharacterized. This present study is aimed at confirming the graft therapeutic efficacy in an immune-competent chronic heart failure (CHF) model and providing evaluation of the in vitro properties of the tissue graft., Methods: hiPSC-CMs and human dermal fibroblasts were cultured into a synthetic bioabsorbable scaffold. The engineered grafts underwent epicardial implantation in infarcted immune-competent male Sprague-Dawley rats. Plasma samples were collected throughout the study to quantify antibody titers. At the study endpoint, all cohorts underwent echocardiographic, hemodynamic, electrophysiologic, and histopathologic assessments., Results: The epicardially placed tissue graft therapy improved ( p < 0.05) in vivo and ex vivo cardiac function compared to the untreated CHF cohort. Total IgM and IgG increased for both the untreated and graft-treated CHF cohorts. An immune response to the grafts was detected after seven days in graft-treated CHF rats only. In vitro , engineered grafts exhibited responsiveness to beta-adrenergic receptor agonism/antagonism and SERCA inhibition and elicited complex molecular profiles., Conclusions: This hiPSC-CM-derived cardiac graft improved systolic and diastolic cardiac function in immune-competent CHF rats. The improvements were detectable at seven weeks post-graft implantation despite an antibody response beginning at week one and peaking at week three. 35. The value of virtual biobanks for transparency purposes with respect to reagents and samples used during test development and validation.

Abstract: Biobanks represent a valuable resource in many areas of biomedical research and development. They function as repositories for well-documented and well-characterised biological material that can be used as the basis for this work. Virtual biobanks amplify the availability of this resource by linking multiple biobanks via a single interface. Test development and validation is an essential process that helps to provide confidence in diagnostic test results and, by extension, the disease and health status of animal populations demonstrated by such results. The quality of the development and validation pathway can be enhanced by the use of well-characterised material for standards and validation panels. Virtual biobanks represent a powerful mechanism for enhancing access to such material, and allow other parties to both have greater confidence in the work done, and to be able to repeat it themselves, as required.

36. Modulating the Infarcted Ventricle's Refractoriness with an Epicardial Biomaterial.

Abstract: Patients diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) are at increased risk of monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation. The presence of myocardial fibrosis provides both anatomical and functional barriers that promote arrhythmias in these patients. Propagation of VT in a reentrant circuit depends on the presence of excitable myocardium and the refractoriness of the circuit. We hypothesize that myocardial refractoriness can be modulated surgically in a model of HFrEF, leading to decreased susceptibility to VT.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were infarcted via permanent left coronary artery ligation. At 3 weeks post-infarction, engineered grafts composed of human dermal fibroblasts cultured into a polyglactin-910 biomaterial were implanted onto the epicardium to cover the area of infarction. Three weeks post-graft treatment, all rats underwent a terminal electrophysiologic study to compare monophasic action potential electroanatomic maps and susceptibility to inducible monomorphic VT.HFrEF rats (n=29) demonstrated a longer (p=0.0191) ventricular effective refractory period (ERP) and a greater (p=0.0394) VT inducibility compared with sham (n=7). HFrEF rats treated with the graft (n=12) exhibited no change in capture threshold (p=0.3220), but had a longer ventricular ERP (p=0.0029) compared with HFrEF. No statistically significant change in VT incidence was found between HFrEF rats treated with the graft and untreated HFrEF rats (p=0.0834).Surgical deployment of a fibroblast-containing biomaterial in a rodent ischemic cardiomyopathy model prolonged ventricular ERP as measured by programmed electrical stimulation. Abstract: The past nine years have seen major advances in establishing the etiology of unilateral primary aldosteronism, and very possibly that of bilateral hyperaldosteronism, in response to somatic mutations in aldosterone synthase expressing cells. Though there have been important advances in the management of primary aldosteronism, in small but convincing studies, they represent minor changes to current guidelines. What has been totally absent is consideration of the public health issue that primary aldosterone represents, and the public policy issues that would be involved in addressing the disorder. In his introduction to PiPA 6, Martin Reincke calculated that only one in a thousand patients in Germany with primary aldosteronism were treated appropriately, an astounding figure for any disease in the 21st century. Towards remedying this totally unacceptable public health issue, the author proposes a radical simplification and streamlining of screening for primary aldosteronism, and the management of most patients by general practitioners. The second bottle-neck in current management is that of mandatory adrenal venous sampling for all but 1-2% of patients, a costly procedure requiring rare expertise. Ideally, it should be reserved - on the basis of likelihood, enhanced imaging, or peripheral steroid profiles - for a small minority of patients with clear evidence for unilateral disease. Abstract: Objective: Vascular structures may play a significant role in epileptic pathology. Although previous attempts to characterize vasculature relative to epileptogenic zones and hippocampal sclerosis have been inconsistent, an in vivo method of analysis would assist in resolving these inconsistencies and facilitate a comparison against healthy controls in a human model. Magnetic resonance imaging is a noninvasive technique that provides excellent soft tissue contrast, and the relatively recent development of susceptibility-weighted imaging has dramatically improved the visibility of small veins., Methods: We built and tested a Hessian-based segmentation technique, which takes advantage of the increased signal and contrast available at 7 T to detect venous structures in vivo. We investigate the ability of this technique to quantify vessels in the brain and apply it to an asymmetry analysis of vessel density in the hippocampus in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and neocortical epilepsy., Results: Vessel density was highly symmetric in the hippocampus in controls (mean asymmetry = 0.080 ± 0.076, median = 0.05027), whereas average vessel density asymmetry was greater in neocortical (mean asymmetry = 0.23 ± 0.17, median = 0.14) and MTLE (mean asymmetry = 0.37 ± 0.46, median = 0.26) patients, with the decrease in vessel density ipsilateral to the suspected seizure onset zone. 39. Predicting population responses to environmental change from individual-level mechanisms: towards a standardized mechanistic approach.

Abstract: Animal populations will mediate the response of global biodiversity to environmental changes. Population models are thus important tools for both understanding and predicting animal responses to uncertain future conditions. Most approaches, however, are correlative and ignore the individual-level mechanisms that give rise to population dynamics. Here, we assess several existing population modelling approaches and find limitations to both 'correlative' and 'mechanistic' models. We advocate the need for a standardized mechanistic approach for linking individual mechanisms (physiology, behaviour, and evolution) to population dynamics in spatially explicit landscapes. Such an approach is potentially more flexible and informative than current population models. Key to realizing this goal, however, is overcoming current data limitations, the development and testing of eco-evolutionary theory to represent interactions between individual mechanisms, and standardized multi-dimensional environmental change scenarios which incorporate multiple stressors. Such progress is essential in supporting environmental decisions in uncertain future conditions.

40. 7T MRI in epilepsy patients with previously normal clinical MRI exams compared against healthy controls.

Abstract: Objective: To compare by 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with focal epilepsy who have non-lesional clinical MRI scans with healthy controls., Methods: 37 patients with focal epilepsy, based on clinical and electroencephalogram (EEG) data, with non-lesional MRIs at clinical field strengths and 21 healthy controls were recruited for the 7T imaging study. The MRI protocol consisted of high resolution T1-weighted, T2-weighted and susceptibility weighted imaging sequences of the entire cortex. The images were read by two neuroradiologists, who were initially blind to clinical data, and then reviewed a second time with knowledge of the seizure onset zone., Results: A total of 25 patients had findings with epileptogenic potential. In five patients these were definitely related to their epilepsy, confirmed through surgical intervention, in three they co-localized to the suspected seizure onset zone and likely caused the seizures. In seven patients the imaging findings co-localized to the suspected seizure onset zone but were not the definitive cause, and ten had cortical lesions with epileptogenic potential that did not localize to the suspected seizure onset zone. There were multiple other findings of uncertain significance found in both epilepsy patients and healthy controls. 41. Predator-prey dynamics of bald eagles and glaucous-winged gulls at Protection Island, Washington, USA.

Abstract: Bald eagle ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) populations in North America rebounded in the latter part of the twentieth century, the result of tightened protection and outlawing of pesticides such as DDT. An unintended consequence of recovery may be a negative impact on seabirds. During the 1980s, few bald eagles disturbed a large glaucous-winged gull ( Larus glaucescens ) colony on Protection Island, Washington, USA, in the Salish Sea. Breeding gull numbers in this colony rose nearly 50% during the 1980s and early 1990s. Beginning in the 1990s, a dramatic increase in bald eagle activity ensued within the colony, after which began a significant decline in gull numbers.To examine whether trends in the gull colony could be explained by eagle activity, we fit a Lotka-Volterra-type predator-prey model to gull nest count data and Washington State eagle territory data collected in most years between 1980 and 2016. Both species were assumed to grow logistically in the absence of the other.The model fits the data with generalized R 2 = 0.82, supporting the hypothesis that gull dynamics were due largely to eagle population dynamics.Point estimates of the model parameters indicated approach to stable coexistence. Within the 95% confidence intervals for the parameters, however, 11.0% of bootstrapped parameter vectors predicted gull colony extinction.Our results suggest that the effects of bald eagle activity on the dynamics of a large gull colony were explained by a predator-prey relationship that included the possibility of coexistence but also the possibility of gull colony extinction. This study serves as a cautionary exploration of the future, not only for gulls on Protection Island, but for other seabirds in the Salish Sea. Managers should monitor numbers of nests in seabird colonies as well as eagle activity within colonies to document trends that may lead to colony extinction., Competing Interests: None declared.

Abstract: Avian trichomonosis, caused by the protozoan Trichomonas gallinae, affects bird-eating raptors worldwide. Raptors can develop trichomonosis by feeding on infected prey, particularly Rock Pigeons (C olumba livia), which are a reservoir for T. gallinae. Raptors may be particularly vulnerable to T. gallinae infection in degraded habitats, where changes in resources may cause raptors to switch from foraging on native prey to synanthropic avian species such as Rock Pigeons. Golden Eagles ( Aquila chrysaetos) typically forage on mammals; however, habitat across much of their range is experiencing degradation through changes in land use, climate, and human encroachment. In 2015, we examined the prevalence of T. gallinae infection in Golden Eagle nestlings across western North America and conducted an intensive study on factors associated with T. gallinae infection and trichomonosis in southwestern Idaho. We found T. gallinae infection in 13% (12/96) of eagle nestlings across 10 western states and in 41% (13/32) of nestlings in southwestern Idaho. At the Idaho site, the probability of T. gallinae infection increased as the proportion of Rock Pigeons in nestling diet increased. Nestlings with diets that consisted of ≥10% Rock Pigeons had a very high probability of T. gallinae infection. We compared historical (1971-81) and recent (2014-15) diet data and incidence of trichomonosis lesions of nestling eagles in Idaho and found that the proportion of Rock Pigeons in eagle diets was higher in recent versus historical periods, as was the proportion of eagle nestlings with trichomonosis lesions. Our results suggested that localized shifts in eagle diet that result from habitat degradation and loss of historical prey resources have the potential to affect Golden Eagle nestling survival and supported the hypothesis that land use change can alter biologic communities in a way that might have consequences for disease infection and host susceptibility.

Abstract: Purpose: 7T (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facilitates the visualization of the brain with resolution and contrast beyond what is available at conventional clinical field strengths, enabling improved detection and quantification of small structural features such as perivascular spaces (PVSs). The distribution of PVSs, detected in vivo at 7T, may act as a biomarker for the effects of epilepsy. In this work, we systematically quantify the PVSs in the brains of epilepsy patients and compare them to healthy controls., Methods: T 2 -weighted turbo spin echo images were obtained at 7T on 21 epilepsy patients and 17 healthy controls. For all subjects, PVSs were manually marked on Osirix image analysis software. Marked PVSs with diameter≥0.5mm were then mapped by hemisphere and lobe. The asymmetry index (AI) was calculated for each region and the maximum asymmetry index (|AI max |) was reported for each subject. The asymmetry in epilepsy subjects was compared to that of controls, and the region with highest asymmetry was compared to the suspected seizure onset zone., Results: There was a significant difference between the |AI max | in epilepsy subjects and in controls (p=0.016). In 72% of patients, the region or lobe of the brain showing maximum PVS asymmetry was the same as the region containing the suspected seizure onset zone., Conclusion: These findings suggest that epilepsy may be associated with significantly asymmetric distribution of PVSs in the brain. Abstract: Axonal injury due to prostatectomy leads to Wallerian degeneration of the cavernous nerve (CN) and erectile dysfunction (ED). Return of potency is dependent on axonal regeneration and reinnervation of the penis. Following CN injury (CNI), RhoA and Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) increase in penile endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Previous studies indicate that nerve regeneration is hampered by activation of RhoA/ROCK pathway. We evaluated the role of RhoA/ROCK pathway in CN regulation following CNI using a validated rat model. CNI upregulated gene and protein expression of RhoA/ROCK and caspase-3 mediated apoptosis in the major pelvic ganglion (MPG). ROCK inhibitor (ROCK-I) prevented upregulation of RhoA/ROCK pathway as well as activation of caspase-3 in the MPG. Following CNI, there was decrease in the dimer to monomer ratio of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) protein and lowered NOS activity in the MPG, which were prevented by ROCK-I. CNI lowered intracavernous pressure and impaired non-adrenergic non-cholinergic-mediated relaxation in the penis, consistent with ED. ROCK-I maintained the intracavernous pressure and non-adrenergic non-cholinergic-mediated relaxation in the penis following CNI. These results suggest that activation of RhoA/ROCK pathway mediates caspase-3 dependent apoptosis of nitrergic neurons in the MPG following CNI and that ROCK-I can prevent post-prostatectomy ED.

47. Multispectral fluorescence imaging of human ovarian and fallopian tube tissue for early-stage cancer detection.

Abstract: With early detection, 5-year survival rates for ovarian cancer exceed 90%, yet no effective early screening method exists. Emerging consensus suggests over 50% of the most lethal form of the disease originates in the fallopian tube. Twenty-eight women undergoing oophorectomy or debulking surgery provided informed consent for the use of surgical discard tissue samples for multispectral fluorescence imaging. Using multiple ultraviolet and visible excitation wavelengths and emissions bands, 12 fluorescence and 6 reflectance images of 47 ovarian and 31 fallopian tube tissue samples were recorded. After imaging, each sample was fixed, sectioned, and stained for pathological evaluation. Univariate logistic regression showed cancerous tissue samples had significantly lower intensity than noncancerous tissue for 17 image types. The predictive power of multiple image types was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression (MLR) and quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). Two MLR models each using two image types had receiver operating characteristic curves with area under the curve exceeding 0.9. QDA determined 56 image type combinations with perfect resubstituting using as few as five image types. Adaption of the system for future in vivo fallopian tube and ovary endoscopic imaging is possible, which may enable sensitive detection of ovarian cancer with no exogenous contrast agents.

48. Inventory Control Methods in a Long-Term Care Pharmacy: Comparisons and Time-Series Analyses.

Abstract: Background: Current inventory theory is based on simulated data and unrealistic formulae. Inventory replenishment processes are therefore commonly disrupted, and out-of-stock (OOS) events are unnecessarily frequent. Objective: OOS events at a large-volume, long-term care pharmacy in North Carolina were compared among 4 sequentially applied methods of inventory control: ( a ) a manual system without Six Sigma protocol, ( b ) a manual system with Six Sigma protocol, ( c ) a computer-assisted system with Six Sigma protocol, and ( d ) an automated system with Six Sigma protocol. Methods: Daily OOS rates were recorded for 11 weeks during the implementation of each method. Between-group comparisons were performed, and time-series analyses were conducted during each implementation to determine the significance of the change in OOS rates over the evaluation period. Results: In terms of the 2 manual systems, OOS rates were lower for the system to which a Six Sigma protocol was applied. In terms of the 3 Six Sigma systems, ranked differences were significant. The computer-assisted system had a lower OOS rate than did the automated system, and the automated system had a lower OOS rate than did the manual Six Sigma system. OOS rates were significantly reduced over an 11-week period for the computer-assisted and the automated systems. Conclusions: Six Sigma was found to be an effective process improvement strategy in the selected pharmacy setting. Abstract: We studied simultaneously the (4)He(e,e'p), (4)He(e,e'pp), and (4)He(e,e'pn) reactions at Q(2)=2(GeV/c)(2) and x(B)>1, for an (e,e'p) missing-momentum range of 400 to 830 MeV/c. The knocked-out proton was detected in coincidence with a proton or neutron recoiling almost back to back to the missing momentum, leaving the residual A=2 system at low excitation energy. These data were used to identify two-nucleon short-range correlated pairs and to deduce their isospin structure as a function of missing momentum, in a region where the nucleon-nucleon (NN) force is expected to change from predominantly tensor to repulsive. The abundance of neutron-proton pairs is reduced as the nucleon momentum increases beyond ∼500 MeV/c. The extracted fraction of proton-proton pairs is small and almost independent of the missing momentum. Our data are compared with calculations of two-nucleon momentum distributions in (4)He and discussed in the context of probing the elusive repulsive component of the NN force.

Abstract: Diagnosis of psychiatric conditions is a topic that is currently receiving significant attention in light of the release of the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 2013. The process of the revisions is complex and involves political, social, and economic influences, all of which are amplified in an evolving corporate health care system in the United States. Of particular concern in the development of the revised nosology is the representation of gender-specific diagnoses and course specifiers to reflect the distinct manifestations of the psychiatric symptoms of women. Based on a growing body of psychobiological evidence related to gender differences in symptom manifestation, gender specific diagnoses remain palpably absent from the taxonomy. This article explores the issue of invisibility of women-specific diagnosis from the perspective of a women's health advanced practice nurse.
