It is nearly a century since the Buff-breasted Button-quail Turnix olivii was last definitively recorded, resulting in the species being recently classified as one of Australia's most imperilled species. However, conservation action to recover the species has been hampered by an inability to locate an extant population. To overcome this problem we conducted extensive surveys across the species' presumed distribution. We surveyed historical sites where the species was collected, and also where habitat deemed suitable for the species occurred on Cape York Peninsula. We also surveyed sites on the northern Atherton Tablelands where a contemporary population has been reported. Surveys were conducted from 2018 to 2022 and employed a variety of survey methods known to be suitable for detecting button-quail. No evidence of Buff-breasted Button-quail was detected. However, Painted Button-quail Turnix varius where found to be widespread at sites surveyed in the Wet Tropics and Einasleigh Uplands bioregions as well as in southern areas of Cape York Peninsula. We discuss the implications of these results including the likely effectiveness of the different survey methods for detecting the Buff-breasted Button-quail specifically, and button-quail generally. This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026., Comment: 928 pages, version 3 (arXiv:1406.6311v3) corresponds to the alpha, beta, gamma version of the book, the other versions use the phi1, phi2, phi3 notation

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We use 111+/-1 million Upsilon(3S) and 89+/-1 million Upsilon(2S) events recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions between bottomonium states using photons that have been converted to e+e- pairs by the detector material. We observe Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b0,2(1P) decay, make precise measurements of the branching fractions for chi_b1,2(1P,2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S) and chi_b1,2(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(2S) decays, and search for radiative decay to the eta_b(1S) and eta_b(2S) states., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, published by Phys. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the $h_b(1P)$ spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (4.3 +/- 1.1(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.)) x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S)-->pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b-->gamma eta_b)., Comment: 8 pages, 4 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. - Abstract
Maintaining peace and conserving biodiversity hinge on an international system of cooperation codified in institutions, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brings recent progress to a crossroads. Against this backdrop, we address some implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for the governance of biodiversity conservation both within and beyond Russia. The Russian invasion of Ukraine threatens the governance system for biodiversity conservation, as it pertains to Russia and beyond, due to three interacting factors: (i) isolation of Russia from the international system, (ii) halt and delay of international cooperation, and (iii) changes in international and domestic policy priorities. We recommend making the existing international system of governance for conserving biodiversity more resilient and adaptable, while aligning security agendas with biodiversity conservation goals.

A series of targeting vectors have been constructed containing two types of human-specific repeat sequences: Blur8 a short interspersed nuclear element (SINE) from the Alu family of sequences, and two fragments from the 3' end of a long interspersed element (LINE) L1. The vectors contain dominant markers selectable in mammalian cell culture (neoR), as well as in yeast (Leu2), and bacteria (Amp), and restriction sites to enable unique cleavage of genomic DNA after integration of the vector (ISce-I and lacO). I have introduced the vectors into J1c4, a somatic cell hybrid containing a single human chromosome in a background of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) DNA. I have tested the ability of the chosen repeat sequences to mediate integration of the vector into human DNA in preference to Chinese hamster DNA. The sites of integration were localised by fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH). Forty-three G418-resistant clones were isolated after targeting with a vector containing two Alu-repeat sequences. Of 37 of these analysed by FISH, only in 1 had the vector integrated into the human chromosome 11. Using vectors containing two L1 fragments or an L1 and an Alu sequence, a total of 65 G418 resistant clones were isolated in three different experiments. FISH analysis showed that in 8/14 of these clones the marker was localised to the human chromosome 11. This suggests that fragment(s) from the L1 repetitive element can direct integration of a vector into human DNA within a somatic cell hybrid. Characterisation of clones containing markers in the human chromosome has been carried out using PCR and restriction endonuclease mapping strategies. Cleavage at a unique restriction endonuclease site introduced by the vector has been demonstrated.

- Abstract
In 2018, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a decision on protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). It contains the definition of an OECM and related scientific and technical advice that has broadened the scope of governance authorities and areas that can be engaged and recognised in global conservation efforts. The voluntary guidance on OECMs and protected areas, also included in the decision, promotes the use of diverse, effective and equitable governance models, the integration of protected areas and OECMs into wider landscapes and seascapes, and mainstreaming of biodiversity conservation across sectors. Taken as a whole, the advice and voluntary guidance provides further clarity about the CBD Parties’ understanding of what constitutes equitable and effective area-based conservation measures within and beyond protected areas and provides standardised criteria with which to measure and report areas’ attributes and performance. This policy perspective suggests that this CBD decision represents further evidence of the evolution from the ‘new paradigm for protected areas’ to a broader ‘conserved areas paradigm’ that embodies good governance, equity and effective conservation outcomes and is inclusive of a diversity of contributions to conservation within and beyond protected areas.

- Abstract
Many global environmental agendas, including halting biodiversity loss, reversing land degradation, and limiting climate change, depend upon retaining forests with high ecological integrity, yet the scale and degree of forest modification remain poorly quantified and mapped. By integrating data on observed and inferred human pressures and an index of lost connectivity, we generate a globally consistent, continuous index of forest condition as determined by the degree of anthropogenic modification. Globally, only 17.4 million km2 of forest (40.5%) has high landscape-level integrity (mostly found in Canada, Russia, the Amazon, Central Africa, and New Guinea) and only 27% of this area is found in nationally designated protected areas. Of the forest inside protected areas, only 56% has high landscape-level integrity. Ambitious policies that prioritize the retention of forest integrity, especially in the most intact areas, are now urgently needed alongside current efforts aimed at halting deforestation and restoring the integrity of forests globally.

- Abstract
Global biodiversity policy is at a crossroads. Recent global assessments of living nature (1, 2) and climate (3) show worsening trends and a rapidly narrowing window for action. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has recently announced that none of the 20 Aichi targets for biodiversity it set in 2010 has been reached and only six have been partially achieved (4). Against this backdrop, nations are now negotiating the next generation of the CBD's global goals [see supplementary materials (SM)], due for adoption in 2021, which will frame actions of governments and other actors for decades to come. In response to the goals proposed in the draft post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) made public by the CBD (5), we urge negotiators to consider three points that are critical if the agreed goals are to stabilize or reverse nature's decline. First, multiple goals are required because of nature's complexity, with different facets—genes, populations, species, deep evolutionary history, ecosystems, and their contributions to people—having markedly different geographic distributions and responses to human drivers. Second, interlinkages among these facets mean that goals must be defined and developed holistically rather than in isolation, with potential to advance multiple goals simultaneously and minimize trade-offs between them. Third, only the highest level of ambition in setting each goal, and implementing all goals in an integrated manner, will give a realistic chance of stopping—and beginning to reverse—biodiversity loss by 2050.
