Search

Core-collapse supernovae are explosions of massive stars at the end of their evolution. They are responsible for metal production and for halting star formation, having a significant impact on galaxy evolution. The details of these processes depend on the nature of supernova progenitors, but it is unclear if Type Ic supernovae (without hydrogen or helium lines in their spectra) originate from core-collapses of very massive stars (> 30 Msun) or from less massive stars in binary systems. Here we show that Type II (with hydrogen lines) and Ic supernovae are located in environments with similar molecular gas densities, therefore their progenitors have comparable lifetimes and initial masses. This supports a binary interaction for most Type Ic supernova progenitors, which explains the lack of hydrogen and helium lines. The spectral features observed in kilonovae (KNe) reveal the elemental composition and the velocity structures of matter ejected from neutron star mergers. In the spectra of the kilonova AT2017gfo, a P Cygni line at about 1$\mu$m has been linked to Sr II, providing the first direct evidence of freshly synthesised $r$-process material. An alternative explanation to Sr II was proposed - He I $\lambda 1083.3$nm under certain non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium (NLTE) conditions. A key way to robustly discriminate between these identifications, and indeed other proposed identifications, is to analyse the temporal emergence and evolution of the feature. In this analysis we trace the earliest appearance of the observed feature and detail its spectro-temporal evolution, which we compare with a collisional-radiative model of helium. We show that the 1$\mu$m P Cygni line is inconsistent with a He I interpretation both in emergence time and in subsequent spectral evolution. Galaxy clusters are the most massive, gravitationally-bound structures in the Universe, emerging through hierarchical structure formation of large-scale dark matter and baryon overdensities. Early galaxy ``proto-clusters'' are believed to be important physical drivers of the overall cosmic star-formation rate density and serve as ``hotspots'' for the reionization of the intergalactic medium. Our understanding of the formation of these structures at the earliest cosmic epochs is, however, limited to sparse observations of their galaxy members, or based on phenomenological models and cosmological simulations. Here we report the detection of a massive neutral, atomic hydrogen (HI) gas reservoir permeating a galaxy proto-cluster at redshift $z=5.4$, observed one billion years after the Big Bang. The presence of this cold gas is revealed by strong damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption features observed in several background galaxy spectra taken with JWST/NIRSpec in close on-sky projection. While overall the sightlines probe a large range in HI column densities, $N_{\rm HI} = 10^{21.7}-10^{23.5}$ cm$^{-2}$, they are similar across nearby sightlines, demonstrating that they probe the same dense, neutral gas. This observation of a massive, large-scale overdensity of cold neutral gas challenges current large-scale cosmological simulations and has strong implications for the reionization topology of the Universe., Comment: Submitted

The spectral features in the optical/near-infrared counterparts of neutron star mergers (kilonovae, KNe), evolve dramatically on hour timescales. To examine the spectral evolution we compile a temporal series complete at all observed epochs from 0.5 to 9.4 days of the best optical/near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the gravitational-wave detected kilonova AT2017gfo. Using our analysis of this spectral series, we show that the emergence times of spectral features place strong constraints on line identifications and ejecta properties, while their subsequent evolution probes the structure of the ejecta. We find that the most prominent spectral feature, the 1$\mathrm{\mu}$m P Cygni line, appears suddenly, with the earliest detection at 1.17 days. We find evidence in this earliest feature for the fastest kilonova ejecta component yet discovered, at 0.40-0.45$c$; while across the observed epochs and wavelengths, the velocities of the line-forming regions span nearly an order of magnitude, down to as low as 0.04-0.07$c$. The time of emergence closely follows the predictions for Sr II, due to the rapid recombination of Sr III under local thermal equilibrium (LTE) conditions. The time of transition between the doubly and singly ionised states provides the first direct measurement of the ionisation temperature, This temperature is highly consistent, at the level of a few percent, with the temperature of the emitted blackbody radiation field. Further, we find the KN to be isotropic in temperature, i.e. the polar and equatorial ejecta differ by less than a few hundred Kelvin or within 5%, in the first few days post-merger, based on measurements of the reverberation time-delay effect. We present a comprehensive spectro-photometric analysis of the galaxy GS9422 from the JADES GTO survey located at $z=5.943$, anomalously showing a simultaneous strong Ly$\alpha$ emission feature and damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA), based on JWST NIRSpec and NIRCam observations. The best-fit modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) reveals a young, low-mass (${\rm log}(M_\star/M_{\odot}) = 7.8 \pm 0.01$) galaxy, with a mass-weighted mean age of the stellar population of $(10.9^{+0.07}_{-0.12})\,$Myr. The identified strong nebular emission lines suggest a highly ionized ($O_{32} = 59$), low-metallicity ($12+\log({\rm O/H}) = 7.78\pm 0.10$) star-forming galaxy with a star-formation rate SFR = ($8.2 \pm 2.8$) $\rm M_{\odot}\;yr^{-1}$ over a compact surface area $A_e = 1.85$ kpc$^{2}$, typical for galaxies at this epoch. We carefully model the rest-frame UV NIRSpec Prism spectrum around the Ly$\alpha$ edge, finding that the Ly$\alpha$ emission-line redshift is consistent with the longer-wavelength recombination lines and an escape fraction of $f_{\rm esc,Ly\alpha} = 30\%$ but that the broad DLA feature is not able to converge on the same redshift. Instead, our modelling suggests $z_{\rm abs}= 5.40 \pm 0.10$, the exact redshift of a newly identified proto-cluster in nearby projection to the target galaxy. We argue that most of the HI gas producing the strong Ly$\alpha$ damping wing indeed has to be unassociated with the galaxy itself, and thus may indicate that we are probing the cold, dense circumcluster medium of this massive galaxy overdensity. These results provide an alternative solution to the recent claims of continuum nebular emission or an obscured active galactic nucleus dominating the rest-frame UV parts of the spectrum and provide further indications that strong DLAs might preferentially be associated with galaxy overdensities. Galaxy morphology is shaped by stellar activity, feedback, gas and dust properties, and interactions with surroundings, and can therefore provide insight into these processes. In this paper, we study the spatial offsets between stellar and interstellar medium emission in a sample of 54 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim4-6$ observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate C$^+$ at Early times (ALPINE). We find no significant spatial offset for the majority ($\sim$ 70 percent) of galaxies in the sample among any combination of [C II], far-infrared continuum, optical, and ultraviolet emission. However, a fraction of the sample ($\sim$ 30 percent) shows offsets larger than the median by more than 3$\sigma$ significance (compared to the uncertainty on the offsets), especially between [C II] and ultraviolet emission. We find that these significant offsets are of the order of $\sim$0.5-0.7 arcsec, corresponding to $\sim$3.5-4.5 kiloparsecs. The offsets could be caused by a complex dust geometry, strong feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei, large-scale gas inflow and outflow, or a combination of these phenomena. However, our current analysis does not definitively constrain the origin. Future, higher resolution ALMA and JWST observations may help resolve the ambiguity. Regardless, since there exist at least some galaxies that display such large offsets, galaxy models and spectral energy distribution fitting codes cannot assume co-spatial emission in all main-sequence galaxies, and must take into account that the observed emission across wavelengths may be spatially segregated., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. JWST has revealed a class of numerous, extremely compact sources, with rest-frame red optical/near-infrared (NIR) and blue ultraviolet (UV) colours, nicknamed "little red dots". We present one of the highest signal-to-noise ratio JWST NIRSpec/PRISM spectra of a little red dot, J0647_1045 at $z = 4.5321 \pm 0.0001$, and examine its NIRCam morphology, to differentiate the origin of the UV and optical/NIR emission, and elucidate the nature of the little red dot phenomenon. J0647_1045 is unresolved ($r_e < 0.17$ kpc) in the three NIRCam long-wavelength filters, but significantly extended ($r_e = 0.45 \pm 0.06$ kpc) in the three short-wavelength filters, indicating a red compact source in a blue star-forming galaxy. The spectral continuum shows a clear change in slope, from blue in the optical/UV, to red in the restframe optical/NIR, consistent with two distinct components, fit by power-laws with different attenuation: $A_V = 0.54 \pm 0.01$ (UV) and $A_V = 5.7 \pm 0.2$ (optical/NIR). Fitting the H$\alpha$ line requires both broad (full width at half-maximum $\sim 4300 \pm 300 km s^{-1}$) and narrow components, but none of the other emission lines, including H$\beta$, show evidence of broadness. We calculate $A_V = 1.1 \pm 0.2$ from the Balmer decrement using narrow H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, and $A_V > 4.1 \pm 0.2$ from broad H$\alpha$ and upper limit on broad H$\beta$, consistent with the blue and red continuum attenuation respectively. Based on single-epoch H$\alpha$ linewidth, the mass of the central black hole is $8 \pm 1 \times 10^8 M_\odot$. Our findings are consistent with a multi-component model, where the optical/NIR and broad lines arise from a highly obscured, spatially unresolved region, likely a relatively massive active galactic nucleus, while the less obscured UV continuum and narrow lines arise, at least partly, from a small but spatially resolved star-forming host galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Kilonovae (KNe) are one of the fastest types of optical transients known, cooling rapidly in the first few days following their neutron-star merger origin. We show here that KN spectral features go through rapid recombination transitions, with features due to elements in the new ionisation state emerging quickly. Due to time-delay effects of the rapidly-expanding KN, a 'wave' of these new features passing though the ejecta is a detectable phenomenon. In particular, isolated line features will emerge as blueshifted absorption features first, gradually evolving into more pronounced absorption/emission P Cygni features and then pure emission features. In this analysis, we present the evolution of the individual exposures of the KN AT2017gfo observed with VLT/X-shooter that together comprise X-shooter's first epoch spectrum (1.43 days post-merger). We show that the spectra of these 'sub-epochs' show a significant evolution across the roughly one hour of observations, including a decrease of the blackbody temperature and photospheric velocity. The cooling blackbody constrains the recombination-wave, where a Sr II interpretation of the AT2017gfo $1\mu$m feature predicts both a specific timing for the feature emergence and its early spectral shape, including the very weak emission component observed at about 1.43 days. This empirically indicates a strong correspondence between the radiation temperature and the ejecta's electron temperature. Furthermore, this reverberation suggests that temporal modelling is important for interpreting individual spectra and that higher cadence spectral series, especially when concentrated at specific times, can provide strong constraints on KN line identifications and the ejecta physics. The evolution of the cosmic dust content and the cycle between metals and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) play a fundamental role in galaxy evolution. The chemical enrichment of the Universe can be traced through the evolution of the dust-to-metals ratio (DTM) and the dust-to-gas ratio (DTG) with metallicity. We use a novel method to determine mass estimates of the DTM, DTG and dust composition based on our previous measurements of the depletion of metals in different environments (the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers, DLAs, toward quasars and towards gamma-ray bursts, GRBs), which were calculated from the relative abundances of metals in the ISM through absorption-line spectroscopy column densities observed mainly from VLT/UVES and X-shooter, and HST/STIS. We derive the dust extinction from the estimated dust depletion ($A_{V, \rm depl}$) and compare with the $A_{V}$ from extinction. We find that the DTM and DTG ratios increase with metallicity and with the dust tracer [Zn/Fe]. This suggests that grain growth in the ISM is a dominant process of dust production. The increasing trend of the DTM and DTG with metallicity is in good agreement with a dust production and evolution model. Our data suggest that the stellar dust yield is much lower than the metal yield and thus that the overall amount of dust in the warm neutral medium that is produced by stars is much lower. We find that $A_{V,\rm depl}$ is overall lower than $A_{V, \rm ext}$ for the Milky Way and a few Magellanic Clouds lines of sight, a discrepancy that is likely related to the presence of carbonaceous dust. We show that the main elements that contribute to the dust composition are, O, Fe, Si, Mg, C, S, Ni and Al for all the environments. Recent analysis of the kilonova, AT2017gfo, has indicated that this event was highly spherical. This may challenge hydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers, which usually predict a range of asymmetries, and radiative transfer simulations show a strong direction dependence. Here we investigate whether the synthetic spectra from a 3D kilonova simulation of asymmetric ejecta from a hydrodynamical merger simulation can be compatible with the observational constraints suggesting a high degree of sphericity in AT2017gfo. Specifically, we determine whether fitting a simple P-Cygni line profile model leads to a value for the photospheric velocity that is consistent with the value obtained from the expanding photosphere method. We would infer that our kilonova simulation is highly spherical at early times, when the spectra resemble a blackbody distribution. The two independently inferred photospheric velocities can be very similar, implying a high degree of sphericity, which can be as spherical as inferred for AT2017gfo, demonstrating that the photosphere can appear spherical even for asymmetrical ejecta. The last-interaction velocities of radiation escaping the simulation show a high degree of sphericity, supporting the inferred symmetry of the photosphere. We find that when the synthetic spectra resemble a blackbody the expanding photosphere method can be used to obtain an accurate luminosity distance (within 4-7 per cent)., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Neutron star mergers are believed to be a major cosmological source of rapid neutron-capture elements. The kilonovae associated with neutron star mergers have to date yielded only a single well-identified spectral signature: the P Cygni line of Sr$^+$ at about 1$\mu$m in the spectra of the optical transient, AT2017gfo. Such P Cygni lines are important, because they provide significant information not just potentially on the elemental composition of the merger ejecta, but also on the velocity, geometry, and abundance stratification of the explosion. In this paper we show evidence for a previously unrecognised P Cygni line in the spectra of AT2017gfo that emerges several days after the explosion, located at $\lambda \approx 760\,$nm. We show that the feature is well-reproduced by 4d$^2$-4d5p transitions of Y$^+$, which have a weighted mean wavelength around 760-770 nm, with the most prominent line at 788.19 nm. While the observed line is weaker than the Sr$^+$ feature, the velocity stratification of the new line provides an independent constraint on the expansion rate of the ejecta similar to the constraints from Sr$^+$., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Accepted in A&A

While gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens from neutron star (NS) mergers have been proposed to offer good measurements of the Hubble constant, we show in this paper how a variation of the expanding photosphere method (EPM) or spectral-fitting expanding atmosphere method, applied to the kilonovae (KNe) associated with the mergers, can provide an independent distance measurement to individual mergers that is potentially accurate to within a few percent. There are four reasons why the KN-EPM overcomes the major uncertainties commonly associated with this method in supernovae: 1) the early continuum is very well-reproduced by a blackbody spectrum, 2) the dilution effect from electron scattering opacity is likely negligible, 3) the explosion times are exactly known due to the GW detection, and 4) the ejecta geometry is, at least in some cases, highly spherical and can be constrained from line-shape analysis. We provide an analysis of the early VLT/X-shooter spectra AT2017gfo showing how the luminosity distance can be determined, and find a luminosity distance of $D_L = 44.5\pm0.8$ Mpc in agreement with, but more precise than, previous methods. We investigate the dominant systematic uncertainties, but our simple framework, which assumes a blackbody photosphere, does not account for the full time-dependent three-dimensional radiative transfer effects, so this distance should be treated as preliminary. The luminosity distance corresponds to an estimated Hubble constant of $H_0 = 67.0\pm 3.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, where the dominant uncertainty is due to the modelling of the host peculiar velocity. We also estimate the expected constraints on $H_0$ from future KN-EPM-analysis with the upcoming O4 and O5 runs of the LIGO collaboration GW-detectors, where five to ten similar KNe would yield 1\% precision cosmological constraints., Comment: A&A, In press

The onset of galaxy formation is thought to be initiated by the infall of neutral, pristine gas onto the first protogalactic halos. However, direct constraints on the abundance of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies have been difficult to obtain at early cosmic times. Here we present spectroscopic observations with JWST of three galaxies at redshifts $z=8.8 - 11.4$, about $400-600$ Myr after the Big Bang, that show strong damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption ($N_{\rm HI} > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) from HI in their local surroundings, an order of magnitude in excess of the Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption caused by the neutral intergalactic medium at these redshifts. Consequently, these early galaxies cannot be contributing significantly to reionization, at least at their current evolutionary stages. Simulations of galaxy formation show that such massive gas reservoirs surrounding young galaxies so early in the history of the universe is a signature of galaxy formation in progress., Comment: Submitted

The assembly and build-up of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies is one of the most fundamental processes in galaxy formation and evolution. Studying this process directly in the early universe is hindered by the weakness of the hyperfine 21-cm HI line transition, impeding direct detections and measurements of the HI gas masses ($M_{\rm HI}$). Here we present a new method to infer $M_{\rm HI}$ of high-redshift galaxies using neutral, atomic oxygen as a proxy. Specifically, we derive metallicity-dependent conversion factors relating the far-infrared [OI]-$63\mu$m and [OI]-$145\mu$m emission line luminosities and $M_{\rm HI}$ in star-forming galaxies at $z\approx 2-6$ using gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as probes. We substantiate these results by observations of galaxies at $z\approx 0$ with direct measurements of $M_{\rm HI}$ and [OI]-$63\mu$m and [OI]-$145\mu$m in addition to hydrodynamical simulations at similar epochs. We find that the [OI]$_{\rm 63\mu m}$-to-HI and [OI]$_{\rm 145\mu m}$-to-HI conversion factors universally appears to be anti-correlated with the gas-phase metallicity. The high-redshift GRB measurements further predict a mean ratio of $L_{\rm [OI]-63\mu m} / L_{\rm [OI]-145\mu m}=1.55\pm 0.12$ and reveal generally less excited [CII]. The $z \approx 0$ galaxy sample also shows systematically higher $\beta_{\rm [OI]-63\mu m}$ and $\beta_{\rm [OI]-145\mu m}$ conversion factors than the GRB sample, indicating either suppressed [OI] emission in local galaxies or more extended, diffuse HI gas reservoirs traced by the HI 21-cm. Finally, we apply these empirical calibrations to the few high-redshift detections of [OI]-$63\mu$m and [OI]-$145\mu$m line transitions from the literature and further discuss the applicability of these conversion factors to probe the HI gas content in the dense, star-forming ISM of galaxies at $z\gtrsim 6$, well into the epoch of reionization., Comment: Submitted to A&A. The mergers of neutron stars expel a heavy-element enriched fireball which can be observed as a kilonova. The kilonova's geometry is a key diagnostic of the merger and is dictated by the properties of ultra-dense matter and the energetics of the collapse to a black hole. Current hydrodynamical merger models typically show aspherical ejecta. Previously, Sr$^+$ was identified in the spectrum of the the only well-studied kilonova AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational wave event GW170817. Here we combine the strong Sr$^+$ P Cygni absorption-emission spectral feature and the blackbody nature of kilonova spectrum, to determine that the kilonova is highly spherical at early epochs. Line shape analysis combined with the known inclination angle of the source also shows the same sphericity independently. We conclude that energy injection by radioactive decay is insufficient to make the ejecta spherical. A magnetar wind or jet from the black hole disk could inject enough energy to induce a more spherical distribution in the overall ejecta, however an additional process seems necessary to make the element distribution uniform

We present ALMA deep spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=8.496$ with $\log(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})\sim7.8$ whose optical nebular lines and stellar continuum are detected by JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam Early Release Observations in SMACS0723. Our ALMA spectrum shows [OIII]88$\mu$m and [CII]158$\mu$m line detections at $4.0\sigma$ and $4.5\sigma$, respectively. The redshift and position of the [OIII] line coincide with those of the JWST source, while the [CII] line is blue-shifted by 90 km s$^{-1}$ with a spatial offset of $0.''5$ ($\approx0.5$ kpc in source plane) from the JWST source. The NIRCam F444W image, including [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and H$\beta$ line emission, spatially extends beyond the stellar components by a factor of $>8$. This indicates that the $z=8.5$ galaxy has already experienced strong outflows whose oxygen and carbon produce the extended [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and the offset [CII] emission, which would promote ionizing photon escape and facilitate reionization. With careful slit-loss corrections and removals of emission spatially outside the galaxy, we evaluate the [OIII]88$\mu$m/$\lambda$5007 line ratio, and derive the electron density $n_{\rm e}$ by photoionization modeling to be $220^{+170}_{-100}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is comparable with those of $z\sim2-3$ galaxies. We estimate an [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio in the galaxy of $>4$, as high as those of known $z\sim6-9$ galaxies. This high [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio is generally explained by the high $n_{\rm e}$ as well as the low metallicity ($Z_{\rm gas}/Z_{\odot}=0.04^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$), high ionization parameter ($\log U > -2.27$), and low carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio ($\log$(C/O) $=[-0.52:-0.24]$) obtained from the JWST/NIRSpec data; further [CII] follow-up observations will constrain the covering fraction of photodissociation regions., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Galaxies throughout the last 12 Gyr of cosmic time follow a single, universal relation that connects their star-formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses ($M_\star$) and chemical abundances. Deviation from these fundamental scaling relations would imply a drastic change in the processes that regulate galaxy evolution. Observations have hinted at the possibility that this relation may be broken in the very early universe. However, until recently, chemical abundances of galaxies could be only measured reliably as far back as redshift $z=3.3$. With JWST, we can now characterize the SFR, $M_\star$, and chemical abundance of galaxies during the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang, at redshifts $z=7-10$. Here we show that galaxies at this epoch follow unique SFR-$M_\star$--main-sequence and mass-metallicity scaling relations, but their chemical abundance is a factor of three lower than expected from the fundamental-metallicity relation of later galaxies. We present the first detection of the [N II] 122 $\mu$m and [O III] 52 $\mu$m lines for a reionisation-epoch galaxy. Based on these lines and previous [C II] 158 $\mu$m and [O III] 88 $\mu$m measurements, using two different radiative transfer models of the interstellar medium, we estimate an upper limit on electron density of $\lesssim$ 500 cm$^{-3}$ and a gas-phase metallicity $Z/Z_\odot \sim 1.1 \pm 0.2$ for A1689-zD1, a gravitationally-lensed, dusty galaxy at $z$ = 7.133. Other measurements or indicators of metallicity so far in galaxy interstellar media at $z \gtrsim$ 6 are typically an order of magnitude lower than this. The unusually high metallicity makes A1689-zD1 inconsistent with the fundamental metallicity relation, although there is likely significant dust obscuration of the stellar mass, which may partly resolve the inconsistency. Given a solar metallicity, the dust-to-metals ratio is a factor of several lower than expected, hinting that galaxies beyond $z \sim$ 7 may have lower dust formation efficiency. One of the most fundamental baryonic matter components of galaxies is the neutral atomic hydrogen (H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$). At low redshifts, this component can be traced directly through the 21-cm transition, but to infer H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ gas content of the most distant galaxies, a viable tracer is needed. We here investigate the fidelity of the fine structure transition of the ($^2P_{3/2} - ^2P_{1/3}$) transition of singly-ionized carbon [C$\,{\rm \scriptsize II}$] at $158\,\mu$m as a proxy for H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ in a set simulated galaxies at $z\approx 6$, following the work by Heintz et al. (2021). We select 11,125 star-forming galaxies from the SIMBA simulations, with far-infrared line emissions post-processed and modeled within the SIGAME framework. We find a strong connection between [C$\,{\rm \scriptsize II}$] and H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$, with the relation between this [C$\,{\rm \scriptsize II}$]-to-H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ relation ($\beta_{\rm [C\,{\rm \scriptsize II}]}$) being anti-correlated with the gas-phase metallicity of the simulated galaxies. We further use these simulations to make predictions for the total baryonic matter content of galaxies at $z\approx 6$, and specifically the HI gas mass fraction. We find mean values of $M_{\rm HI}/M_\star = 1.4$, and $M_{\rm HI}/M_{\rm bar,tot} = 0.45$. These results provide strong evidence for H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ being the dominant baryonic matter component by mass in galaxies at $z\approx 6$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Large fractions of metals are missing from the observable gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) because they are incorporated into dust grains, a phenomenon called dust depletion. The study of dust depletion in the ISM is important to investigate the origin and evolution of metals and cosmic dust. Here we aim at characterizing the dust depletion of several metals from the Milky Way to distant galaxies. We collect ISM metal column densities from absorption-line spectroscopy in the literature, and in addition, we determine Ti and Ni column densities from a sample of 70 damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars, observed with UVES/VLT. We use ISM relative abundances to estimate the dust depletion of 18 metals (C, P, O, Cl, Kr, S, Ge, Mg, Si, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Ni, Al, Ti, Zn and Fe) for different environments (the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), DLAs towards quasars and towards gamma-ray bursts). We observe linear relations between the depletion of each metal and the strength of dust depletion, which we trace with the observed [Zn/Fe]. In the neutral ISM of the MCs we find small deviations from linearity observed as an overabundance of the $\alpha$-elements Ti, Mg, S and an underabundance of Mn. The deviations disappear if we assume that all OB stars observed towards the MCs in our sample have an $\alpha$-element enhancement and Mn underabundance. This may imply that the MCs have been recently enriched in $\alpha$-elements, potentially due to recent bursts of star formation. The observed strong correlations of the depletion sequences of the metals all the way from low metallicity QSO-DLAs to the Milky Way suggest that cosmic dust has a common origin, independently of the star formation history, which varies significantly between these different galaxies. We present spatially-resolved morphological properties of [CII] 158 $\mu$m, [OIII] 88 $\mu$m, dust, and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum emission for A1689-zD1, a strongly lensed, sub-L* galaxy at $z=7.13$, by utilizing deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. While the [OIII] line and UV continuum are compact, the [CII] line is extended up to a radius of $r \sim 12$ kpc. Using multi-band rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) continuum data ranging from 52-400 $\mu$m, we find an average dust temperature and emissivity index of $T_{\rm dust} = 41^{+17}_{-14}$ K and $\beta = 1.7^{+1.1}_{-0.7}$, respectively, across the galaxy. We find slight differences in the dust continuum profiles at different wavelengths, which may indicate that the dust temperature decreases with distance. We map the star-formation rate (SFR) via IR and UV luminosities and determine a total SFR of $37\pm 1~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ with an obscured fraction of $87\%$. While the [OIII] line is a good tracer of the SFR, the [CII] line shows deviation from the local $L_{\rm [CII]}$-SFR relations in the outskirts of the galaxy. Finally, we observe a clear difference in the line profile between [CII] and [OIII], with significant residuals ($\sim 5\sigma$) in the [OIII] line spectrum after subtracting a single Gaussian model. This suggests a possible origin of the extended [CII] structure from the cooling of hot ionized outflows. The extended [CII] and high-velocity [OIII] emission may both contribute in part to the high $L_{\rm [OIII]}$/$L_{\rm [CII]}$ ratios recently reported in $z>6$ galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted to ApJ, presented at AAS240

We report the archival discovery of Lyman-$\alpha$ emission from the bright ultraviolet galaxy Y002 at $z=7.677$, spectroscopically confirmed by its ionized carbon [CII] 158$\mu$m emission line. The Ly$\alpha$ line is spatially associated with the rest-frame UV stellar emission ($M_{\rm UV}$~-22, 2x brighter than $M^\star_{\rm UV}$) and it appears offset from the peak of the extended [CII] emission at the current ~1" spatial resolution. We derive an estimate of the unobscured SFR(UV)=$(22\pm1)\,M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and set an upper limit of SFR(IR)$<15\,M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ from the far-infrared wavelength range, which globally place Y002 on the SFR(UV+IR)-L([CII]) correlation observed at lower redshifts. In terms of velocity, the peak of the Ly$\alpha$ emission is redshifted by $\Delta v$(Ly$\alpha$)~500 km s$^{-1}$ from the systemic redshift set by [CII] and a high-velocity tail extends to up to ~1000 km s$^{-1}$. The velocity offset is up to ~3.5x higher than the average estimate for similarly UV-bright emitters at z~6-7, which might suggest that we are witnessing the merging of two clumps. A combination of strong outflows and the possible presence of an extended ionized bubble surrounding Y002 would likely facilitate the escape of copious Ly$\alpha$ light, as indicated by the large equivalent width EW(Ly$\alpha$)=$24^{+5}_{-6}$ \r{A}. Assuming that [CII] traces the neutral hydrogen, we estimate a HI gas fraction of $M({\rm HI})/M_\star\gtrsim8$ for Y002 as a system and speculate that patches of high HI column densities could contribute to explain the observed spatial offsets between Ly$\alpha$ and [CII] emitting regions. The low dust content, implied by the non-detection of the far-infrared continuum emission at rest-frame ~160 $\mu$m, would be sufficient to absorb any potential Ly$\alpha$ photons produced within the [CII] clump as a result of large HI column densities., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We report ALMA Band 9 continuum observations of the normal, dusty star-forming galaxy A1689-zD1 at $z = 7.13$, resulting in a $\sim$4.6$\sigma$ detection at $702$ GHz. For the first time these observations probe the far infrared (FIR) spectrum shortward of the emission peak of a galaxy in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Together with ancillary data from earlier works, we derive the dust temperature, $T_{\rm d}$, and mass, $M_{\rm d}$, of A1689-zD1 using both traditional modified blackbody spectral energy density fitting, and a new method that relies only on the [CII] $158\ \mathrm{\mu m}$ line and underlying continuum data. The two methods give $T_{\rm d} = (42^{+13}_{-7}, 40^{+13}_{-7}$) K, and $M_{\rm d} = (1.7^{+1.3}_{-0.7}, 2.0^{+1.8}_{-1.0})\,\times{}\,10^{7} \,M_{\odot}$. Band 9 observations improve the accuracy of the dust temperature (mass) estimate by $\sim 50$% (6 times). The derived temperatures confirm the reported increasing $T_{\rm d}$-redshift trend between $z=0$ and $8$; the dust mass is consistent with a supernova origin. Although A1689-zD1 is a normal UV-selected galaxy, our results, implying that $\sim$85% of its star formation rate is obscured, underline the non-negligible effects of dust in EoR galaxies., Comment: Published in MNRAS

The HI gas content is a key ingredient in galaxy evolution, the study of which has been limited to moderate cosmological distances for individual galaxies due to the weakness of the hyperfine HI 21-cm transition. Here we present a new approach that allows us to infer the HI gas mass $M_{\rm HI}$ of individual galaxies up to $z\approx 6$, based on a direct measurement of the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor in star-forming galaxies at $z\gtrsim 2$ using $\gamma$-ray burst afterglows. By compiling recent [CII]-158 $\mu$m emission line measurements we quantify the evolution of the HI content in galaxies through cosmic time. We find that the HI mass starts to exceed the stellar mass $M_\star$ at $z\gtrsim 1$, and increases as a function of redshift. The HI fraction of the total baryonic mass increases from around $20\%$ at $z = 0$ to about $60\%$ at $z\sim 6$. We further uncover a universal relation between the HI gas fraction $M_{\rm HI}/M_\star$ and the gas-phase metallicity, which seems to hold from $z\approx 6$ to $z=0$. The majority of galaxies at $z>2$ are observed to have HI depletion times, $t_{\rm dep,HI} = M_{\rm HI}/{\rm SFR}$, less than $\approx 2$ Gyr, substantially shorter than for $z\sim 0$ galaxies. Finally, we use the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor to determine the cosmic mass density of HI in galaxies, $\rho_{\rm HI}$, at three distinct epochs: $z\approx 0$, $z\approx 2$, and $z\sim 4-6$. These measurements are consistent with previous estimates based on 21-cm HI observations in the local Universe and with damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z\gtrsim 2$, suggesting an overall decrease by a factor of $\approx 5$ in $\rho_{\rm HI}(z)$ from the end of the reionization epoch to the present., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The duration of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) is a key indicator of its physics origin, with long bursts perhaps associated with the collapse of massive stars and short bursts with mergers of neutron stars.However, there is substantial overlap in the properties of both short and long GRBs and neither duration nor any other parameter so far considered completely separates the two groups. Here we unambiguously classify every GRB using a machine-learning, dimensionality-reduction algorithm, t-distributed stochastic neighborhood embedding (t-SNE), providing a catalog separating all Swift GRBs into two groups. Although the classification takes place only using prompt emission light curves,every burst with an associated supernova is found in the longer group and bursts with kilonovae in the short, suggesting along with the duration distributions that these two groups are truly long and short GRBs. Two bursts with a clear absence of a supernova belong to the longer class, indicating that these might have been direct-collapse black holes, a proposed phenomenon that may occur in the deaths of more massive stars., Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letters, 8 pages, 4 figures

The amount of cold, molecular gas in high-redshift galaxies is typically inferred from proxies of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), such as carbon monoxide (CO) or neutral atomic carbon ([CI]) and molecular gas mass conversion factors. The use of these proxies, however, relies on modeling and observations that have not been directly measured outside the local universe. Here, we use recent samples of high-redshift gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar molecular gas absorbers to determine this conversion factor $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ from the column density of H$_2$, which gives us the mass per unit column, and the [CI]($J=1$) column density, which provides the luminosity per unit column. This technique allows us to make direct measurements of the relative abundances in high-redshift absorption-selected galaxies. Our sample spans redshifts of z=1.9-3.4 and covers two orders of magnitude in gas-phase metallicity. We find that $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ scales linearly with the metallicity: $\log \alpha_{\rm [CI]} = -1.13\times \log(Z/Z_{\odot}) + 1.33$, with a scatter of $\sigma_{\alpha_{\rm [CI]}} = 0.2$ dex. Using a sample of emission-selected galaxies at z~0-5, with both [CI] and CO line detections, we apply the $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ conversion to derive independent estimates of the molecular gas mass and $\alpha_{\rm CO}$. We find a remarkable agreement between the molecular gas masses inferred from the absorption-derived $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ compared to typical $\alpha_{\rm CO}$-based estimates, and an inferred metallicity evolution of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ that is consistent with $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ and previous estimates from the literature. These results thus support the use of the absorption-derived $\alpha_{\rm [CI]}$ conversion factor for emission-selected star-forming galaxies and demonstrate that both methods probe the same universal properties of molecular gas in the local and high-redshift universe., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Half of all the elements in the universe heavier than iron were created by rapid neutron capture. The theory for this astrophysical `$r$-process' was worked out six decades ago and requires an enormous neutron flux to make the bulk of these elements. Where this happens is still debated. A key piece of missing evidence is the identification of freshly-synthesised $r$-process elements in an astrophysical site. Current models and circumstantial evidence point to neutron star mergers as a probable $r$-process site, with the optical/infrared `kilonova' emerging in the days after the merger a likely place to detect the spectral signatures of newly-created neutron-capture elements. The kilonova, AT2017gfo, emerging from the gravitational-wave--discovered neutron star merger, GW170817, was the first kilonova where detailed spectra were recorded. When these spectra were first reported it was argued that they were broadly consonant with an outflow of radioactive heavy elements, however, there was no robust identification of any element. Here we report the identification of the neutron-capture element strontium in a re-analysis of these spectra. The detection of a neutron-capture element associated with the collision of two extreme-density stars establishes the origin of $r$-process elements in neutron star mergers, and demonstrates that neutron stars contain neutron-rich matter.

We recommend a conceptual design study for a spectroscopic facility in the southern hemisphere comprising a large diameter telescope, fiber system, and spectrographs collectively optimized for massively-multiplexed spectroscopy. As a baseline, we propose an 11.4-meter aperture, optical spectroscopic survey telescope with a five square degree field of view. Using current technologies, the facility could be equipped with 15,000 robotically-controlled fibers feeding spectrographs over 360

We present the results from the application of a two-dimensional emission line detection method, EMission-line two-Dimensional (EM2D), to the near-infrared G102 grism observations obtained with the Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3) as part of the Cycle 22 {\em Hubble Space Telescope} Treasury Program: the Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS). Using the EM2D method, we have assembled a catalog of emission line galaxies (ELGs) with resolved star formation from each of the four FIGS fields. Not only can one better assess the global properties of ELGs, but the EM2D method allows for the analysis and an improved study of the individual emission-line region {\it within} each galaxy. This paper includes a description of the methodology, advantages, and the first results of the EM2D method applied to ELGs in FIGS. The advantage of 2D emission line measurements includes significant improvement of galaxy redshift measurements, approaching the level of accuracy seen in high-spectral-resolution data, but with greater efficiency; and the ability to identify and measure the properties of multiple sites of star-formation and over scales of $\sim$ 1 kpc within individual galaxies out to z $\sim$ 4. The EM2D method also significantly improves the reliability of high-redshift ($z\sim7$) Lyman-$\alpha$ detections. Coupled with the wide field of view and high efficiency of space-based grism observations, EM2D provides a noteworthy improvement on the physical parameters that can be extracted from grism observations., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present new ALMA observations and physical properties of a Lyman Break Galaxy at z=7.15. Our target, B14-65666, has a bright ultra-violet (UV) absolute magnitude, $M_{\rm UV}\approx-22.4$, and has been spectroscopically identified in Ly$\alpha$ with a small rest-frame equivalent width of $\approx4$ \AA. Previous HST image has shown that the target is comprised of two spatially separated clumps in the rest-frame UV. With ALMA, we have newly detected spatially resolved [OIII] 88 $\mu$m, [CII] 158 $\mu$m, and their underlying dust continuum emission. In the whole system of B14-65666, the [OIII] and [CII] lines have consistent redshifts of $7.1520\pm0.0003$, and the [OIII] luminosity, $(34.4\pm4.1)\times10^{8}L_{\rm \odot}$, is about three times higher than the [CII] luminosity, $(11.0\pm1.4)\times10^{8}L_{\rm \odot}$. With our two continuum flux densities, the dust temperature is constrained to be $T_{\rm d}\approx50-60$ K under the assumption of the dust emissivity index of $\beta_{\rm d}=2.0-1.5$, leading to a large total infrared luminosity of $L_{\rm TIR}\approx1\times10^{12}L_{\rm \odot}$. Owing to our high spatial resolution data, we show that the [OIII] and [CII] emission can be spatially decomposed into two clumps associated with the two rest-frame UV clumps whose spectra are kinematically separated by $\approx200$ km s$^{-1}$. We also find these two clumps have comparable UV, infrared, [OIII], and [CII] luminosities. Based on these results, we argue that B14-65666 is a starburst galaxy induced by a major-merger. The merger interpretation is also supported by the large specific star-formation rate (defined as the star-formation rate per unit stellar mass), sSFR$=260^{+119}_{-57}$ Gyr$^{-1}$, inferred from our SED fitting. Probably, a strong UV radiation field caused by intense star formation contributes to its high dust temperature and the [OIII]-to-[CII] luminosity ratio., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, 9 tables. Binary neutron-star mergers (BNSMs) are among the most readily detectable gravitational-wave (GW) sources with LIGO. They are also thought to produce short $\gamma$-ray bursts (SGRBs), and kilonovae that are powered by r-process nuclei. Detecting these phenomena simultaneously would provide an unprecedented view of the physics during and after the merger of two compact objects. Such a Rosetta Stone event was detected by LIGO/Virgo on 17 August 2017 at a distance of $\sim 44$ Mpc. We monitored the position of the BNSM with ALMA at 338.5 GHz and GMRT at 1.4 GHz, from 1.4 to 44 days after the merger. Our observations rule out any afterglow more luminous than $3\times 10^{26}~{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}\,{\rm Hz}^{-1}$ in these bands, probing $>$2--4 dex fainter than previous SGRB limits. We match these limits, in conjunction with public data announcing the appearance of X-ray and radio emission in the weeks after the GW event, to templates of off-axis afterglows. Our broadband modeling suggests that GW170817 was accompanied by a SGRB and that the GRB jet, powered by $E_{\rm AG,\,iso}\sim10^{50}$~erg, had a half-opening angle of $\sim20^\circ$, and was misaligned by $\sim41^\circ$ from our line of sight. The data are also consistent with a more collimated jet: $E_{\rm AG,\,iso}\sim10^{51}$~erg, $\theta_{1/2,\,\rm jet}\sim5^\circ$, $\theta_{\rm obs}\sim17^\circ$. This is the most conclusive detection of an off-axis GRB afterglow and the first associated with a BNSM-GW event to date. The Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS) is a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR (Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared) slitless spectroscopic survey of four deep fields. Two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-N) area and two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) area. One of the southern fields selected is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Each of these four fields were observed using the WFC3/G102 grism (0.8$\mu m$-1.15$\mu m$ continuous coverage) with a total exposure time of 40 orbits (~ 100 kilo-seconds) per field. This reaches a 3 sigma continuum depth of ~26 AB magnitudes and probes emission lines to $\approx 10^{-17}\ erg\ s^{-1} \ cm^{-2}$. This paper details the four FIGS fields and the overall observational strategy of the project. A detailed description of the Simulation Based Extraction (SBE) method used to extract and combine over 10000 spectra of over 2000 distinct sources brighter than m_F105W=26.5 mag is provided. High fidelity simulations of the observations is shown to significantly improve the background subtraction process, the spectral contamination estimates, and the final flux calibration. (Abridged) We consider the scientific case for a large aperture (10-12m class) optical spectroscopic survey telescope with a field of view comparable to that of LSST. Such a facility could enable transformational progress in several areas of astrophysics, and may constitute an unmatched capability for decades. Deep imaging from LSST and Euclid will provide accurate photometry for spectroscopic targets beyond the reach of 4m class instruments. Such a facility would revolutionise our understanding of the assembly and enrichment history of the Milky Way and the role of dark matter through chemo-dynamical studies of tens of millions of stars in the Local Group. Emission and absorption line spectroscopy of redshift z=2-5 galaxies can be used to directly chart the evolution of the cosmic web and examine its connection with activity in galaxies. The facility will also have synergistic impact, e.g. in following up live and transpired transients found with LSST, as well as providing targets and the local environmental conditions for follow-up studies with E-ELT and future space missions. Although our study is exploratory, we highlight a specific telescope design with a 5 square degree field of view and an additional focus that could host a next-generation panoramic IFU. We discuss some technical challenges and operational models and recommend a conceptual design study aimed at completing a more rigorous science case in the context of a costed technical design., Comment: 50 pages including Appendices, 12 figures. The gravitationally-lensed galaxy A1689-zD1 is one of the most distant spectroscopically confirmed sources ($z=7.5$). It is the earliest known galaxy where the interstellar medium (ISM) has been detected; dust emission was detected with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA). A1689-zD1 is also unusual among high-redshift dust emitters as it is a sub-L* galaxy and is therefore a good prospect for the detection of gaseous ISM in a more typical galaxy at this redshift. We observed A1689-zD1 with ALMA in bands 6 and 7 and with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in band $Q$. To study the structure of A1689-zD1, we map the mm thermal dust emission and find two spatial components with sizes about $0.4-1.7$\,kpc (lensing-corrected). The rough spatial morphology is similar to what is observed in the near-infrared with {\it HST} and points to a perturbed dynamical state, perhaps indicative of a major merger or a disc in early formation. The ALMA photometry is used to constrain the far-infrared spectral energy distribution, yielding a dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust} \sim 35$--$45$\,K for $\beta = 1.5-2$). We do not detect the CO(3-2) line in the GBT data with a 95\% upper limit of 0.3\,mJy observed. We find a slight excess emission in ALMA band~6 at 220.9\,GHz. If this excess is real, it is likely due to emission from the [CII] 158.8\,$\mu$m line at $z_{\rm [CII]} = 7.603$. The stringent upper limits on the [CII]/$L_{\rm FIR}$ luminosity ratio suggest a [CII] deficit similar to several bright quasars and massive starbursts., Comment: 9 pages, accepted to MNRAS, in press

We analyze the near-infrared to UV data of 16 quasars with redshifts ranging from 0.71 $<$ $z$ $<$ 2.13 to investigate dust extinction properties. The sample presented in this work is obtained from the High $A_V$ Quasar (HAQ) survey. The quasar candidates were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), and follow-up spectroscopy was carried out at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) and the New Technology Telescope (NTT). To study dust extinction curves intrinsic to the quasars, from the HAQ survey we selected 16 cases where the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) law could not provide a good solution to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We derived the extinction curves using Fitzpatrick & Massa 1986 (FM) law by comparing the observed SEDs to the combined quasar template from Vanden Berk et al. 2001 and Glikman et al. 2006. The derived extinction, $A_V$, ranges from 0.2-1.0 mag. All the individual extinction curves of our quasars are steeper ($R_V=2.2$-2.7) than that of the SMC, with a weighted mean value of $R_V=2.4$. We derive an `average quasar extinction curve' for our sample by fitting SEDs simultaneously by using the weighted mean values of the FM law parameters and a varying $R_V$. The entire sample is well fit with a single best-fit value of $R_V=2.2\pm0.2$. The `average quasar extinction curve' deviates from the steepest Milky Way and SMC extinction curves at a confidence level $\gtrsim95\%$. Such steep extinction curves suggest a significant population of silicates to produce small dust grains. Moreover, another possibility could be that the large dust grains may have been destroyed by the activity of the nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN), resulting in steep extinction curves., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

As part of the OzDES spectroscopic survey we are carrying out a large scale reverberation mapping study of $\sim$500 quasars over five years in the 30 deg$^2$ area of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova fields. These quasars have redshifts ranging up to 4 and have apparent AB magnitudes between $16.8

Candidates for the modest galaxies that formed most of the stars in the early universe, at redshifts $z > 7$, have been found in large numbers with extremely deep restframe-UV imaging. But it has proved difficult for existing spectrographs to characterise them in the UV. The detailed properties of these galaxies could be measured from dust and cool gas emission at far-infrared wavelengths if the galaxies have become sufficiently enriched in dust and metals. So far, however, the most distant UV-selected galaxy detected in dust emission is only at $z = 3.25$, and recent results have cast doubt on whether dust and molecules can be found in typical galaxies at this early epoch. Here we report thermal dust emission from an archetypal early universe star-forming galaxy, A1689-zD1. We detect its stellar continuum in spectroscopy and determine its redshift to be $z = 7.5\pm0.2$ from a spectroscopic detection of the Ly{\alpha} break. A1689-zD1 is representative of the star-forming population during reionisation, with a total star-formation rate of about 12M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The galaxy is highly evolved: it has a large stellar mass, and is heavily enriched in dust, with a dust-to-gas ratio close to that of the Milky Way. Using over a million and a half extragalactic spectra we study the correlations of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) in the Milky Way. We measure the correlation between DIB strength and dust extinction for 142 DIBs using 24 stacked spectra in the reddening range E(B-V) < 0.2, many more lines than ever studied before. Most of the DIBs do not correlate with dust extinction. However, we find 10 weak and barely studied DIBs with correlations that are higher than 0.7 with dust extinction and confirm the high correlation of additional 5 strong DIBs. Furthermore, we find a pair of DIBs, 5925.9A and 5927.5A which exhibits significant negative correlation with dust extinction, indicating that their carrier may be depleted on dust. We use Machine Learning algorithms to divide the DIBs to spectroscopic families based on 250 stacked spectra. By removing the dust dependency we study how DIBs follow their local environment. The active galaxy NGC 4151 has a crucial role as one of only two active galactic nuclei for which black hole mass measurements based on emission line reverberation mapping can be calibrated against other dynamical methods. Unfortunately, effective calibration requires an accurate distance to NGC 4151, which is currently not available. Recently reported distances range from 4 to 29 megaparsecs (Mpc). Strong peculiar motions make a redshift-based distance very uncertain, and the geometry of the galaxy and its nucleus prohibit accurate measurements using other techniques. Here we report a dust-parallax distance to NGC 4151 of $D_A = 19.0^{+2.4}_{-2.6}$ Mpc. The measurement is based on an adaptation of a geometric method proposed previously using the emission line regions of active galaxies. Since this region is too small for current imaging capabilities, we use instead the ratio of the physical-to-angular sizes of the more extended hot dust emission as determined from time-delays and infrared interferometry. This new distance leads to an approximately 1.4-fold increase in the dynamical black hole mass, implying a corresponding correction to emission line reverberation masses of black holes if they are calibrated against the two objects with additional dynamical masses., Comment: Authors' version of a letter published in Nature (27 November 2014); 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We present deep spectroscopy of 17 very low mass (M* ~ 2.0x10^6 Msun to 1.4x10^9 Msun) and low luminosity (M_UV ~ -13.7 to -19.9) gravitationally lensed galaxies in the redshift range z~1.5-3.0. Deep rest-frame ultraviolet spectra reveal large equivalent width emission from numerous lines (NIV], OIII], CIV, Si III], CIII]) which are rarely seen in individual spectra of more massive star forming galaxies. CIII] is detected in 16 of 17 low mass star forming systems with rest-frame equivalent widths as large as 13.5 Angstroms. Nebular CIV emission is present in the most extreme CIII] emitters, requiring an ionizing source capable of producing a substantial component of photons with energies in excess of 47.9 eV. Photoionization models support a picture whereby the large equivalent widths are driven by the increased electron temperature and enhanced ionizing output arising from metal poor gas and stars, young stellar populations, and large ionization parameters. The young ages implied by the emission lines and continuum SEDs indicate that the extreme line emitters in our sample are in the midst of a significant upturn in their star formation activity. The low stellar masses, blue UV colors, and large sSFRs of our sample are similar to those of typical z>6 galaxies. Given the strong attenuation of Ly-alpha in z>6 galaxies we suggest that CIII] is likely to provide our best probe of early star forming galaxies with ground-based spectrographs and one of the most efficient means of confirming z>10 galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of dust in galaxies is still a mystery. The majority of the refractory elements are produced in supernova explosions but it is unclear how and where dust grains condense and grow, and how they avoid destruction in the harsh environments of star-forming galaxies. The recent detection of 0.1-0.5 solar masses of dust in nearby supernova remnants suggests in situ dust formation, while other observations reveal very little dust in supernovae the first few years after explosion. Observations of the bright SN 2010jl have been interpreted as pre-existing dust, dust formation or no dust at all. Here we report the rapid (40-240 days) formation of dust in its dense circumstellar medium. The wavelength dependent extinction of this dust reveals the presence of very large (> 1 micron) grains, which are resistant to destructive processes. At later times (500-900 days), the near-IR thermal emission shows an accelerated growth in dust mass, marking the transition of the supernova from a circumstellar- to an ejecta-dominated source of dust.
