Abstract

The article reflects on various concerns over the potential effects of trap fishing on coral reefs and associated habitats. The paper constructed a socioeconomic study to characterize the U.S. Caribbean fish trap fishery in predicting appropriate management actions. Researchers conducted interviews on fishermen, as to reveal the presence of a diverse fishery, fishing practices, and capital investment. The study suggested that targeted policies should be implemented to improve the socioeconomic performance of the fishery and the political acceptability of management actions.

28. Time lags in a two-zone air movement model.

Abstract

Multi-zone models of air movement in buildings usually assume that there is no time lag in the flows between zones. Nevertheless, such time lags could have a significant effect on the pattern of contaminant distribution throughout a building. This note shows how such effects can be evaluated by examining theoretically a two-zone model with time lags. The results have implications for the interpretation of tracer decay measurements. 31. The experimental verification of a computerised thermal model for buildings.

Abstract

The predictions of a computerised thermal model based on the implicit finite difference technique have been compared with experimental measurements on two buildings. The results show that the model is capable of the accurate prediction of the temperatures and the heat flows in a building for a range of different conditions. It has been found that in certain circumstances the predictions of the model are strongly influenced by the value chosen for the convection coefficient at internal surfaces. 39. Effect of blood dilution on recovery of organisms from clinical blood cultures in medium containing sodium polyanethol sulfonate

Abstract

This clinical study was designed to evaluate the standard laboratory protocol that requires blood specimens be diluted with greater than or equal to 10 volumes of media. Blood was collected from hospitalized patients, and 1 ml was inoculated into each of three vials containing 2.3, 7.3, and 24 ml of BACTEC 6B aerobic medium resulting in dilutions of 1:4, 1:10, and 1:30, respectively. The three test vials were treated identically, and the study was carried out at four hospitals. Of the 2,550 sets of vials inoculated, 174 were positive with clinically significant isolates from 105 patients. There was no difference in the number of positive cultures recovered by 24 h (67%) or 48 h (90%) from any dilution. These percentages agreed with other reports from BACTEC users. The number of positive vials (139, 144, 147, respectively) at each dilution was not significantly different, indicating that all three dilutions showed equal recovery of pathogenic microorganisms. Despite this overall equality, two patients, one on antibiotic therapy, were found to have correlated cultures which failed to grow at the 1:4 dilution. This finding implies that a 1:4 dilution of blood cannot be recommended unequivocably despite the higher overall recovery rate of positive cultures.

Abstract

The Air Force sub-satellite Hitch-hiker I was launched into an elliptical polar orbit on 1 July 1963. The satellite carried a payload which included six radiation detection instruments for simultaneously investigating the energy spectra and angular distributions of protons and electrons in the Earth's magnetosphere over a broad range of energies. Data from an orbit of 4 July show qualitative differences in the structures of the radiation belts defined by the different energy bands investigated. Electrons of energies greater than 4 MeV (as detected by a Geiger counter) define two distinct zones with hearts at L = approx. 1.6 and L = approx. 4.5, with a pronounced slot between them at L = approx. 3.0. Electrons of energies between 1 and 4 MeV behave similarly. Protons of energies between 1 and 4 MeV are also found to lie in two zones, congruent with the electron zones, but with the outer one not so well pronounced. Electrons of energies between 15 and 100 keV define a single zone, extending beyond L = approx. 6.9, and with a heart around L = approx. 1.6. Differential spectra of electrons from 15 to 100 keV, measured with a 15% resolution, exhibit maxima around 40 keV over an extensive region of the magnetosphere, L <4, but monotonically decrease from 15 keV in regions beyond L = approx. 4.
