Background: Reducing anti-nutritional factors like phytates in seed protein products requires an ongoing effort. This study was the first to investigate the phytic acid content in seabuckthorn seed protein (SSP) and its reduction by an exogenous phytase during protein isolation from seabuckthorn seed meal through the common alkaline solubilization-isoelectric precipitation process., Results: The additional phytase treatment could reduce the content of phytic acid from 22.46 to 13.27 g kg -1 , leading to SSP products with lighter color (lower ΔE * ), higher protein solubility, higher in vitro digestibility, but lower phenolic antioxidant content (including flavonoids and procyanidins) and some beneficial ions like Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results indicated that the secondary structure of protein changed under the treatment with phytase. Correlation analysis showed that L* was significantly negatively correlated with TP, TPC and TF (P < 0.001), while a* and b* were significantly positively correlated with them (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: There may be a trade-off between protein functionalities and other health-promoting components when a phytase treatment is included in SSP isolation. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are common causes of blindness in people aged over 55 years. Current treatment involves frequent intravitreal administration of corticosteroids such as dexamethasone. The aim of this research was to formulate an electrically controlled delivery system for dexamethasone. Polypyrrole (PPy) was polymerized with dexamethasone sodium phosphate (Dex-P) through two approaches. Firstly, conventional films (CFs) of PPy were electropolymerized by applying a constant current density of 2 mA/cm 2 for 4 min. Secondly, for the first time, we report drug-loaded ethanol-washed films (EWFs). EWFs were prepared in the same manner as CFs, except ethanol washing steps were introduced in the middle and at the end of PPy electropolymerization. The ethanol washing removed unbound PPy oligomers resulting in the formation of smooth surfaces with two distinct layers when viewed in cross-section. The EWFs showed superior electrochemical activity compared to CFs. Sustained release was observed from both CFs and EWFs with bursts of release triggered by electrical stimulation. The EWFs were initially more responsive to the electrical trigger, offering future opportunities to fine tune release. The cytotoxicity of aqueous extracts collected from both films was evaluated on human adult retinal pigment epithelium (ARPE-19) cells using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay with negligible toxicity observed. The results suggest PPy-Dex-P films are highly suitable for the development of electro-responsive implants for the treatment of AMD and DME.

Photoinduced syntheses offer significant advantages over conventional thermal strategies, including improved control over reaction kinetics and low synthesis temperatures, affording nanoparticles with nontrivial and thermodynamically unstable structures. However, the photoinduced syntheses of non-metallic nanocrystalline products (such as metal sulfides) have not yet been reported. Herein, we demonstrate the first photoinduced synthesis of ultrafine (sub-2 nm) Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) from Ag nanoparticles at 10 °C. By thorough investigation of the mechanism for the transformation, a fundamental link was established between the intrinsic structures of the molecular intermediates and the final Ag 2 S products. Efficient capture of solar energy will be critical to meeting the energy needs of the future. Semiconductor photocatalysis is expected to make an important contribution in this regard, delivering both energy carriers (especially H 2 ) and valuable chemical feedstocks under direct sunlight. Over the past few years, carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a promising new class of metal-free photocatalyst, displaying semiconductor-like photoelectric properties and showing excellent performance in a wide variety of photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic applications owing to their ease of synthesis, unique structure, adjustable composition, ease of surface functionalization, outstanding electron-transfer efficiency and tunable light-harvesting range (from deep UV to the near-infrared). Mesoporous carbon nanospheres containing porphyrin-like metal centers (denoted as "PMCS") are successfully synthesized by the pyrolysis of an imidazolate framework using a mesoporous-silica protection strategy. The PMCS allow infrared and photoacoustic imaging and synergetic photothermal therapy/photodynamic therapy derived from the porphyrin-like moieties, offering the possibility of real-time monitoring of therapeutic processes and image-guided precise conformal phototherapy. We report a new methodology for producing monometallic or bimetallic nanoparticles confined within hollow nitrogen-doped porous carbon capsules. The capsules are derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals that are coated with a shell of a secondary material comprising either a metal-tannic acid coordination polymer or a resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer. Platinum nanoparticles are optionally sandwiched between the MOF core and the shell. Pyrolysis of the MOF-shell composites produces hollow capsules of porous nitrogen-doped carbon that bear either monometallic (Pt, Co, and Ni) or alloyed (PtCo and PtNi) metal nanoparticles. The Co and Ni components of the bimetallic nanoparticles are derived from the shell surrounding the MOF crystals. The hollow capsules prevent sintering and detachment of the nanoparticles, and their porous walls allow for efficient mass transport. Alloyed PtCo nanoparticles embedded in the capsule walls are highly active, selective, and recyclable catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines.

A simple seaweed biomass conversion strategy is proposed to synthesize highly porous multishelled Ni-rich Li(Ni x Co y Mn z )O 2 hollow fibers with very low cation mixing. The low cation mixing results from the cation confinement by the novel "egg-box" structure in the alginate template. These hollow fibers exhibit remarkable energy density, high-rate capacity, and long-term cycling stability when used as cathode material for Li-ion batteries.

Zhang and co-workers report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets with extremely high nitrogen content and high surface areas using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) as template, nitrogen source, and porogen. Faceted NiO nanoparticles preferentially exposing high surface energy planes demand attention due to their excellent electrocatalytic properties. However, the activity of faceted NiO nanoparticles generally remains suboptimal due to their large lateral size and thickness, which severely limits the availability of coordinatively unsaturated active reactive edge and corner sites. Here, ultrafine NiO nanosheets with a platelet size of ∼4.0 nm and thickness (∼1.1 nm) stabilized by TiO2 were successfully prepared by calcination of a monolayer layered double hydroxide precursor. The ultrafine NiO nanosheets displayed outstanding performance in electrochemical water oxidation due to a high proportion of reactive NiO {110} facets, intrinsic Ni(3+) and Ti(3+) sites, and abundant interfaces, which act synergistically to promote H2O adsorption and facilitate charge-transfer.

A well-dispersed Co,N co-doped carbon nanoframework (Co,N-CNF) with hierarchically porous structure is successfully synthesized from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) precursors via a mesoporous-silica-protected calcination strategy. Monovalent Zn + (3d 10 4s 1 ) systems possess a special electronic structure that can be exploited in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis, though it remains challenge to synthesize Zn + -containing materials. By careful design, Zn + -related species can be synthesized in zeolite and layered double hydroxide systems, which in turn exhibit excellent catalytic potential in methane, CO and CO 2 activation. Furthermore, by utilizing advanced characterization tools, including electron spin resonance, X-ray absorption fine structure and density functional theory calculations, the formation mechanism of the Zn + species and their structure-performance relationships can be understood. Such advanced characterization tools guide the rational design of high-performance Zn + -containing catalysts for efficient energy conversion.

Defect-rich ultrathin ZnAl-layered double hydroxide nanosheets are successfully prepared. Under UV-vis irradiation, these nanosheets are superior efficient catalysts for the photoreduction of CO2 to CO with water. Avian eggshells are variable in appearance, including coloration. Here, we demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy can provide accurate diagnostic information about major eggshell constituents, including the pigments biliverdin and protoporphyrin IX. Eggshells pigmented with biliverdin showed a series of pigment-diagnostic Raman peaks under 785 nm excitation. Eggshells pigmented with protoporphyrin IX showed strong emission under 1064 nm and 785 nm excitation, whereas resonance Raman spectra (351 nm excitation) showed a set of protoporphyrin IX informative peaks characteristic of protoporphyrin IX. As representative examples, we identified biliverdin in the olive green eggshells of elegant crested tinamous (Eudromia elegans) and in the blue eggshells of extinct upland moa (Megalapteryx didinus). This study encourages the wider use of Raman spectroscopy in pigment and coloration research and highlights the value of this technique for non-destructive analyses of museum eggshell specimens., (© 2015. A copper(i) cysteine complex generated by mixing Cu(ii) ions with cysteine in aqueous solution greatly enhanced the activity of CdSe photocatalysts for H2 production in aqueous solution under visible light excitation. The complex can enhance the H2 evolution rate by as much as 150 times, by acting as an oxidation co-catalyst and increasing charge carrier lifetimes. The copper(i) cysteine complex can also be applied to enhance the H2 production performance of other semiconductor photocatalyst systems, thereby affording a new research direction in the development of co-catalysts for solar hydrogen production.

The mixed-phase nature of P25 TiO2 (85 % anatase/15 % rutile) plays a key role in the high H2 production rates shown by Au/P25 TiO2 photocatalysts in alcohol/water systems. However, a full understanding of the synergistic charge transfer mechanisms between the TiO2 polymorphs that drive the high rates is yet to be realised. Here, we deconstruct P25 TiO2 into its component phases, functionalise the phases with Au nanoparticles and explore charge transfer in Au/TiO2 systems using EPR spectroscopy. EPR spectroscopy and photocatalytic data provide direct evidence that electrons excited across the rutile band gap move to anatase lattice traps through interfacial surface sites, which decreases electron-hole pair recombination and increases charge carrier availability for photoreactions. In particular, three-phase interfacial sites between Au, anatase and rutile appear to be H2 evolution "hot spots". Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone are first line ophthalmic treatment for non-infectious posterior uveitis. Corticosteroids are often administered via intravitreal injection to treat this condition with frequent injections associated with poor treatment adherence and complications such as endophthalmitis. Current ocular implants provide sustained corticosteroid release at predetermined rates and lack the ability for dose individualisation. This study describes the successful fabrication of electrically responsive macroporous polypyrrole (PPy) thin films, and their subsequent application to triggered dexamethasone release. Colloidal crystal films composed of 370nm polymethylmethacrylate colloids were first deposited on ITO coated glass substrates, and subsequently used as sacrificial templates for the fabrication of high surface area, 3-dimensionally ordered macroporous PPy inverse opal (PPy IO) thin films. SEM, UV-Vis reflectance and cyclic voltammetry measurements established that the redox state of the PPy IO films could be controlled via electrical stimulation, which in turn influences both porosity and optical properties of the films. Incorporation of the anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, dexamethasone phosphate (DexP), in the PPy IO films during their fabrication resulted in an effective delivery platform for triggered DexP release. A sustained release profile was observed for the PPy IO-DexP films, bursts of release could be triggered by electrical stimulation. The amount of DexP released from the PPy IO-DexP films was significantly higher than that released from the conventional non-porous PPy-DexP films of comparable mass. Results suggest that electrically responsive PPy IO structures are highly suitable for on-demand drug delivery applications. Avian eggshells are variedly coloured, yet only two pigments, biliverdin and protoporphyrin IX, are known to contribute to the dramatic diversity of their colours. By contrast, the contributions of structural or other chemical components of the eggshell are poorly understood. For example, unpigmented eggshells, which appear white to the human eye, vary in their ultraviolet (UV) reflectance, which may be detectable by birds. We investigated the proximate mechanisms for the variation in UV-reflectance of unpigmented bird eggshells using spectrophotometry, electron microscopy, chemical analyses, and experimental manipulations. We specifically tested how UV-reflectance is affected by the eggshell cuticle, the outermost layer of most avian eggshells. The chemical dissolution of the outer eggshell layers, including the cuticle, increased UV-reflectance for only eggshells that contained a cuticle. Our findings demonstrate that the outer eggshell layers, including the cuticle, absorb UV-light, probably because they contain higher levels of organic components and other chemicals, such as calcium phosphates, compared to the predominantly calcite-based eggshell matrix. The role of pigments in generating the colour and maculation of birds' eggs is well characterized, whereas the effects of the eggshell's nanostructure on the visual appearance of eggs are little studied. Here, we examined the nanostructural basis of glossiness of tinamou eggs. Tinamou eggs are well known for their glossy appearance, but the underlying mechanism responsible for this optical effect is unclear. Using experimental manipulations in conjunction with angle-resolved spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and chemical analyses, we show that the glossy appearance of tinamou eggshells is produced by an extremely smooth cuticle, composed of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and, potentially, organic compounds such as proteins and pigments. Optical calculations corroborate surface smoothness as the main factor producing gloss. Furthermore, we reveal the presence of weak iridescence on eggs of the great tinamou (Tinamus major), an optical effect never previously documented for bird eggs. This study examines the co-extrusion encapsulation of canola oil by alginate, with an antioxidant (quercetin) incorporated either in the oil core or alginate shell. Optical and environmental scanning electron microscopy revealed spherical beads of diameter ∼350μm and wall thickness ∼65μm. Bead appearance, size, wall thickness and surface characteristics did not change appreciably after treatments at pH 3 for 2h, pH 6.5 for 2h or pH 6.5 for 1min then pH 3 for 2h, although the amounts of phenolics released from beads differed depending on the conditions. The quercetin addition approach strongly influenced the stability of canola oil during storage at 20 and 38°C. Quercetin in the core more effectively suppressed oil deterioration. Quercetin in shell caused a higher phenolic content after storage. Tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) to the electronic band gap (EBG) of Au/TiO2 catalysts resulted in considerable enhancement of the photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen under direct sunlight. Au/TiO2 (PBG-357 nm) photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under both UV and sunlight compared to the Au/TiO2 (PBG-585 nm) photocatalyst and both are higher than Au/TiO2 without the 3 dimensionally ordered macro-porous structure materials. The very high photocatalytic activity is attributed to suppression of a fraction of electron-hole recombination route due to the co-incidence of the PBG with the EBG of TiO2 These materials that maintain their activity with very small amount of sacrificial agents (down to 0.5 vol.% of ethanol) are poised to find direct applications because of their high activity, low cost of the process, simplicity and stability.

Intrinsically conducting polymers such as polypyrrole (PPy) are viable platforms for efficient drug delivery, where release rates can be tuned by external electrical stimulus. In this study, the successful fabrication of 3-dimensionally ordered macroporous PPy inverse opal thin films is described, and the viability of such films for controlled drug release evaluated in vitro. The PPy inverse opal thin films were obtained by electropolymerization of PPy through the interstitial voids of a colloidal crystal template composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) colloids of diameter ∼430 nm. Chemical etching of the template yielded macroporous PPy inverse opal scaffolds. The model drug risperidone was loaded into the PPy inverse opal films, and then entrapped by electropolymerization of a non-porous PPy overlayer. The morphology and chemical composition of the PPy scaffolds were evaluated by SEM and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. The high surface area PPy inverse opal scaffolds exhibited enhanced drug loading and releasing capabilities compared to conventional non-porous PPy films. Drug release profiles could be modified by applying electrical stimulus, which caused actuation of the porous polypyrrole films. Silicic acid (H(4)SiO(4)) is ubiquitous in natural aquatic systems. Applications of TiO(2) in these systems will be influenced by H(4)SiO(4) sorption and oligomerization reactions on the TiO(2) surface, and this can affect many aspects of TiO(2) reactivity. The spatial arrangement of sorption sites on a metal oxide surface can promote specific lateral interactions, such as oligomerization, between sorbed species. In this work we explore the relationship between surface structure and interfacial H(4)SiO(4) oligomerization by quantifying the extent of H(4)SiO(4) sorption and oligomerization on three TiO(2) phases; a rutile phase having well-developed (110) faces (R180), a rutile phase with poorly developed (110) faces (R60), and an amorphous TiO(2) (TiO(2(am))). The in situ ATR-IR spectra measured over time as 0.2 mM H(4)SiO(4) reacted with TiO(2) were quite different on the three TiO(2) phases. The percentage of the surface H(4)SiO(4) that was present as oligomers increased over time on all phases, but after 20 h almost all H(4)SiO(4) on the R180 surface was oligomeric, while the H(4)SiO(4) on TiO(2(am)) was predominantly monomeric. The extent of H(4)SiO(4) oligomerization on R60 was intermediate. When the TiO(2) phases reacted with 1.5 mM H(4)SiO(4) the ATR-IR spectra showed oligomeric silicates dominating the surface of all three TiO(2) phases; however, after 20 h the percentage of the surface H(4)SiO(4) present as three-dimensional polymers was ∼30, 10, and 0% on R180, R60, and TiO(2(am)) respectively. The Si 2s photoelectron peak binding energy (BE) and the H(4)SiO(4) surface coverage (Γ(Si)) were measured by XPS over a range of Γ(Si). For any given Γ(Si) the Si 2s BE's were in the order R180 > R60 > TiO(2(am)). A higher Si 2s BE indicates a greater degree of silicate polymerization. The ATR-IR and XPS results support the existing model for interfacial H(4)SiO(4) oligomerization where linear trimeric silicates are formed by insertion of a solution H(4)SiO(4) between suitably orientated adjacent bidentate sorbed monomers. The TiO(2(am)) has previously been shown to consist of ∼2 nm diameter particles with a highly disordered surface. When compared to the TiO(2(am)) surface, the regular arrangement of TiO(6) octahedra on the rutile (110) face means that sorbed H(4)SiO(4) monomers on adjacent rows of singly coordinated oxygen atoms are oriented so as to favor linear trimer formation. Higher silicate polymers can form between adjacent trimers, and this is favored on the rutile (110) surfaces compared to the TiO(2(am)). This is also expected on the basis of the arrangement of surface sites on the rutile (110) surface and because the high surface curvature inherent in a ∼2 nm spherical TiO(2(am)) particle would increase the spatial separation of adjacent trimers.

Photolabile groups can be incorporated into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and then quantitatively cleaved following MOF formation. Here, a 2-nitrobenzyl ether prevents lattice interpenetration (catenation) in a cubic MOF derived from zinc(II). Catalytic hydrogen production from renewables is a promising method for providing energy carriers in the near future. Photocatalysts capable of promoting this reaction are often composed of noble metal nanoparticles deposited on a semiconductor. The most promising semiconductor at present is TiO₂. The successful design of these catalysts relies on a thorough understanding of the role of the noble metal particle size and the TiO₂ polymorph. Here we demonstrate that Au particles in the size range 3-30 nm on TiO₂ are very active in hydrogen production from ethanol. It was found that Au particles of similar size on anatase nanoparticles delivered a rate two orders of magnitude higher than that recorded for Au on rutile nanoparticles. Surprisingly, it was also found that Au particle size does not affect the photoreaction rate over the 3-12 nm range. The high hydrogen yield observed makes these catalysts promising materials for solar conversion.

We present a general strategy for incorporating organocatalytic moieties into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The organocatalytic units are protected by a thermolabile protecting group during MOF synthesis and then unveiled by a simple postsynthetic heating step. The strategy is exemplified using a thermolabile tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) protecting group for a proline moiety, the removal of which endows the resulting cubic zinc(II) IRMOF with catalytic activity for asymmetric aldol reactions. The bulky Boc groups also prevent framework interpenetration, producing open MOFs that can admit relatively large substrates.

Unlabelled: Comparative studies were conducted in this paper to investigate the effects of added dietary fiber (DF) and/or phenolic antioxidants on the properties of bread dough and finished bread. Breads were developed in the absence (control bread), or presence of apple pectin and/or fruit phenolic extracts (treated breads), and subjected to quality evaluation (attributes including color, weight, and volume) and characterization of chemical and rheological properties. Chemical analyses revealed that breads with added phenolic extracts had greater antioxidant activity and higher extractable phenolic content, than control bread and the treated breads with added apple pectin(s). The measured antioxidant activity was mainly derived from the phenolics present in bread. Storage modulus G' (elasticity) and loss modulus G″ (viscocity) of the treated bread dough with added pectin(s) only were higher than those of control dough. The G' or G″ of the treated breads incorporated with a combination of a pectin and fruit phenolic extract depended on the type of phenolic extract (that is, apple and blackcurrant extracts behaved differently from kiwifruit extract). The G' and G″ at the final baking step were higher than those of other stages, indicating an increase in cross-linking among polymeric molecules and bread particles of high molecular weight. We conclude that the added pectin and/or phenolic extract had influenced bread dough cross-linking microstructure and bread properties through being involved in the interactions with bread components such as wheat proteins during dough development and bread baking., Practical Application:   Dietary fibers and phytochemicals (including phenolic antioxidants) have long been recognized as the active nutrients responsible for the health benefits of fruit and vegetables to humans. Interest in incorporating bioactive ingredients such as dietary fiber and phenolic antioxidants into popular foods like bread has grown rapidly, due to the increased consumer health awareness. The added bioactive ingredients may or may not promote the development of bread dough. This paper reports the findings associated with the properties of the functional breads enhanced with apple pectin and apple, blackcurrant, and kiwifruit phenolic extracts. Results of this paper indicate that the success of the development of such functional breads is ultimately determined by the interactions among added bioactive ingredients and other bread components.

While coupling reactions of carbon-containing compounds are numerous in organometallic chemistry, they are very rare on well-defined solid surfaces. In this work we show that the reductive coupling of two molecules of carbon monoxide to C2 compounds (acetylene and ethylene) could be achieved on oxygen-defected UO2(111) single crystal and thin film surfaces. This result allows in situ electron spectroscopic investigation of a typical organometallic reaction such as carbon coupling and extends it to heterogeneous catalysis and solids. By using high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS) it was possible to track the changes in surface states of the U and O atoms as well as identify the intermediate of the reaction. Upon CO adsorption U cations in low oxidation states are oxidized to U4+ ions; this was accompanied by an increase of the O-to-U surface ratios. The HRXPS C 1s lines show the presence of adsorbed species assigned to diolate species (-OCH=CHO-) that are most likely the reaction intermediate in the coupling of two CO molecules to acetylene and ethylene.
