Water adsorption energy, Eads, is a key physical quantity in sustainable chemical technologies such as (photo)electrocatalytic water splitting, water desalination, and water harvesting. In many of these applications, the electrode surface is operated outside the point (potential) of zero charge, which attracts counter-ions to form the electric double layer and controls the surface properties. Here, by applying density functional theory-based finite-field molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the effect of water adsorption energy Eads on surface acidity and the Helmholtz capacitance of BiVO4 as an example of metal oxide electrodes with weakly chemisorbed water. This allows us to establish the effect of Eads on the coordination number, the H-bond network, and the orientation of chemisorbed water by comparing an oxide series composed of BiVO4, TiO2, and SnO2. In particular, it is found that a positive correlation exists between the degree of asymmetry ΔCH in the Helmholtz capacitance and the strength of Eads. This correlation is verified and extended further to graphene-like systems with physisorbed water, where the electric double layers (EDLs) are controlled by electronic charge rather than proton charge as in the oxide series. Therefore, this work reveals a general relationship between water adsorption energy Eads and EDLs, which is relevant to both electrochemical reactivity and the electrowetting of aqueous interfaces. The productivity of olive in the northwestern coastal zone of Egypt is significantly constrained by drought and low organic matter in the soil. This study addresses these challenges by exploring the synergistic effects of olive mill wastes (OMW) application and micro-catchment water harvesting techniques on soil properties, runoff, moisture storage, and rainwater harvesting efficiency. Field experiments were conducted over two winter seasons, employing different micro-catchment structures (semi-circular and triangular bunds) and OMW applications. The results revealed that the integration of semi-circular bunds with OMW application (T4) substantially increased rainwater harvesting efficiency by 67.7% and 46.4% in the first and second seasons, respectively. Additionally, T4 and T5 exhibited reduced runoff by 47.8% and 41.3% in the first season and 49.4% and 38.9% in the second season, respectively. T4 significantly enhanced soil organic matter, soil macronutrients (N, P, and K), and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) compared to the control (T1). The study highlights the effectiveness of T4 in improving soil moisture, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing soil fertility. This integrated approach involving OMW application within a semi-circular bund as a water harvesting system proves to be a promising strategy for sustainable olive cultivation in arid conditions. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as leading candidates for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). Despite their high water uptake capacity, challenges persist in effective solar‐driven desorption for water collection. Addressing this, a photothermal bridge is introduced by in situ growth of Ni₃S₂ coating on a thermally conductive nickel mesh, enhancing heat transfer to the MOF and accelerating desorption kinetics. MIL‐101 (Cr) MOF in bulk form (BMOF) is bonded to the lightweight Ni─Ni3S2 mesh using adhesive, forming a dual‐layer Ni─Ni₃S₂ mesh/BMOF assembly. This hybrid retains a high water uptake of ≈0.63 g g⁻¹ at 60% relative humidity (RH) with superior sorption kinetics. Photothermally driven heat transfer from Ni─Ni₃S₂ to BMOF achieves complete water desorption within 40 min under 1 kW m−2. Compared to other configurations like foil, granules, and foam, the mesh‐based hybrid has the highest single‐cycle adsorption–desorption kinetic of 3.18 × 10⁻3 g g⁻¹ min⁻¹. Additionally, the hybrid demonstrates exceptional hydrothermal stability over 50 cycles and maintains morphological stability with airflow, ensuring consistent performance. Heat transfer simulations confirm the thermal distribution across the Ni─Ni₃S₂ mesh/BMOF, corroborating the rapid and uniform desorption. Introduction: Ancient water harvesting systems, such as those from the Indus Valley Civilization (~3500 BCE), have been vital for irrigation and climate resilience, especially in arid regions. One such prominent system in South Asia, called tank irrigation, initially thrived through community management but declined post-independence due to colonial policies and neglect in Sri Lanka and India. This study evaluates current policy frameworks and rehabilitation programs to enhance the resilience of these systems in India, develop strategies for their protection and adaptation to climate change, and integrate global lessons for sustainable development. Methods: A systematic meta-analysis of grey literature was conducted to aggregate data on policy constraints. Policy analysis involved detailed investigations of relevant documents, regulations, and comparative analyses of frameworks at regional and national levels. Pilot projects on tank rehabilitation were assessed through reported case studies and field surveys to gauge impact. Thematic analysis was used to explore the global potential of these systems in climate resilience and overall environmental sustainability. Results: The analysis showed that pilot projects for tank rehabilitation had limited success in achieving sustainability under current climate conditions. Tank irrigation systems are crucial for adapting to extreme weather, including floods, droughts, and heat waves, replenishing groundwater, reducing soil erosion, and ensuring reliable water supplies. Traditional water harvesting technologies support 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including clean water access, hunger reduction, gender equality, and climate action. Integrating AI and machine learning in water management benefits disaster response, while eco-tourism aids system maintenance and cultural awareness. Discussion: The study underscores the need for policy reforms to enhance tank rehabilitation and institutional arrangements. It calls for increased beneficiary participation and constitutional recognition of current practices. Strategic, national-scale assessments and resilience targets are recommended to improve the effectiveness of such water harvesting systems in mitigating natural hazards and enhancing environmental services. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has received unprecedented attention as a future water and energy platform. However, the water productivity of SAWH systems is still constrained by the slow sorption kinetics at material and component levels and inefficient condensation. Here, we report a facile method to prepare hygroscopic interconnected porous gel (HIPG) with fast sorption-desorption kinetics, high scalability and stability, and strong adhesion property for highly efficient SAWH. We further design a solar-wind coupling driven SAWH device with collaborative heat and mass enhancement achieving continuous water production. Concentrated sunlight contributes to enhancing the desorption and condensation synergistically, and natural wind is introduced to drive the device operation and improve the sorption kinetics. The device demonstrated record high working performance of 14.9 Lwater m−2 day−1 and thermal efficiency of 25.7% in indoor experiments and 3.5–8.9 Lwater m−2 day−1 in outdoor experiments by solar concentration without any other energy consumption. This work provides an up-and-coming pathway to realize highly efficient and sustainable clean water supply for off-grid and arid regions. Improving humidity by adsorbing water through porous materials is an effective way to reduce AWH energy consumption. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a representative of new designable porous materials, is expected to solve the energy consumption problem in the practical application process of AWH. This review elucidates the energy-saving effects and design objectives of MOFs and COFs by analyzing the impact of adsorbents on energy consumption. Additionally, the manuscript delves into the principles of water adsorption in MOFs and COFs, subsequently reviewing the design methods for materials optimized for AWH performance. Concerns about climate change are driving the development of novel technologies for mitigation and adaptation. Some of them include electricity generating and water harvesting based on atmospheric humidity. The latter is already commercial and can generate 50 L of drinking water per day per capita for dozens of people; however, besides energy, operation requires sufficient levels and durations of humidity and temperature. Our study focuses on the 33 megacities of the world, characterising the humidity and heat stress regimes during the last decade, using data from meteorological stations in their vicinity, and ranking them by their exposure and vulnerability to intense heat stress and their suitability to use these moisture‐reliant technologies. Our findings indicate the dominance of severe heat stress conditions in megacities located in developing countries. Ranking the megacities according to the intensity and duration of the heat stress shows the annual, monthly and hourly courses. The five most affected are the cities of Chennai, Bangkok, Kolkata, Karachi and New Delhi. Seven megacities suffer continuous, at least 12 h, of intense heat stress during 1–4 months. The ranking also considered the level of income of the countries, hence their vulnerability. On an annual basis, approximately half of the megacities are highly suited for moisture‐reliant technologies, among them megacities ranked as the top three in exposure to intense heat stress conditions—Chennai, Bangkok and Kolkata. When focusing on the humid season, 27 out of 33 megacities (82%) obtain suitable conditions for the new technologies and thus can benefit from them, at least part of the year. The implementation of humidity technologies for green energy and clean water could be of great help as our world gets more populated, warmer with higher water demand, especially for populations with insufficient infrastructure and resources. This research is focused on the water usage patterns in two student residences—one for male students (Residence I) and the other for female students (Residence II). Surveys and measurements of flushing cisterns, taps, and shower flows were conducted to understand water use behaviors. Scenario 1 proposed replacing washbasin and kitchen taps and installing flow reducers in showers, while Scenario 2 combined Scenario 1 with a rainwater harvesting system for recharging flush cisterns. Showers were found to be the most water-consuming devices, accounting for 46% and 61.41% of water consumption in Residences I and II, respectively, followed by kitchen taps (31.51% in Residence I and 11.52% in Residence II). The flushing cistern consumption was 7.02% in Residence I and 13.22% in Residence II. The implementation of Scenario 1 anticipates a 13% reduction in total water consumption in Residence I and a 10% reduction in Residence II. The reduction in hot water consumption would result in a decrease in annual electricity consumption by 27.8% and 23.06% in Residence I and II, respectively. With the implementation of Scenario 2, the total potential water savings for Residence I could increase to 19.98%, and for Residence II, it could rise to 23.17%. Small-scale open-pit, non-artisanal mining of low-value ores is an understudied practice despite its widespread occurrence and potential impact on freshwater resources due to mining-induced land-use/cover changes (LUCCs). This research investigates the long-term impacts of andesite mining in Pasuruan, Indonesia, on the Umbulan Spring's water discharge within its watershed. System Dynamics (SD) modeling captures the systemic and systematic impact of mining-induced LUCCs on discharge volumes and groundwater recharge. Agricultural and reservoir-based land reclamation scenarios then reveal post-mining temporal dynamics. The no-mining scenario sees the spring's discharge consistently decrease until an inflection point in 2032. With mining expansion, reductions accelerate by ~1.44 million tons over two decades, or 65.31 thousand tons annually. LUCCs also decrease groundwater recharge by ~2.48 million tons via increased surface runoff. Proposed post-mining land interventions over reclaimed mining areas influence water volumes differently. Reservoirs on reclaimed land lead to ~822.14 million extra tons of discharge, 2.75 times higher than the agricultural scenario. Moreover, reservoirs can restore original recharge levels by 2039, while agriculture only reduces the mining impact by 28.64% on average. These findings reveal that small-scale non-artisanal andesite mining can disrupt regional hydrology despite modest operating scales. Thus, evidence-based guidelines are needed for permitting such mines based on environmental risk and site water budgets. Policy options include discharge or aquifer recharge caps tailored to small-scale andesite mines. The varied outputs of rehabilitation scenarios also highlight evaluating combined land and water management interventions. Six ancestral Pueblo community water supply sources were investigated by a team of engineers, scientists, archeologists, and other specialists affiliated with Wright Water Engineers, Inc. (WWE), and the Wright Paleohydrological Institute (WPI) from 1996 to 2021. The team members applied their various technical backgrounds and research methods to gain more insight into the water available to the ancestral Pueblo people living in the Four Corners area of the United States between 750 and 1280 CE, and how these indigenous people managed the water. Using lab analyses, field research, surveys, and analyses of sediment layers, the WWE/WPI team determined that four mounded areas discovered at Mesa Verde National Park had been ancestral Pueblo reservoirs. Through climate research, lab analyses, and investigations at these and two other sites, the team learned that water in this region was limited, and the community had to work diligently to harvest this water and maintain access to it. In the case of the four reservoirs studied, for example, the runoff used as water supply carried a high volume of sediment that required the water storage basins to be frequently dredged to maintain adequate capacity. Water, a fundamental and indispensable resource necessary for the survival of living beings, has become a pressing issue in numerous regions worldwide due to scarcity. Urban areas, where the majority of the global population resides, witness a substantial consumption of blue water, particularly in commercial buildings. This study investigates the potential for enhancing water efficiency within an ongoing high-rise office building construction situated in a tropical climate. The investigation utilizes the green building guidelines of leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) through a case-study-based research approach. Strategies included using efficient plumbing fixtures (such as high air–water ratio fixtures and dual-flush toilets), the selection of native plants, implementing a suitable irrigation system, introducing a rainwater harvesting system (RWHS) and improving the mechanical ventilation and air conditioning (MVAC) system. The results showed a 55% reduction in water use from efficient fixtures, a 93% reduction in landscaping water needs and a 73% overall water efficiency with a RWHS from the baseline design. Additionally, efficient cooling towers and the redirection of condensed water into the cooling tower make-up water tank improved the overall water efficiency to 38%, accounting for the water requirements of the MVAC system. The findings of this study can contribute to more sustainable and water-efficient urban development, particularly in regions facing water scarcity challenges. The significance of these findings lies in their potential to establish industry standards and inform policymakers in the building sector. As global water resources decline and demand increases due to population growth and climate change, innovative rainwater storage systems (IRSSs) have become crucial. This review examines the potential of IRSSs to sustainably address rainwater challenges by analyzing key factors that influence their success. Drawing on research from Scopus and Google Scholar, it evaluates IRSSs in both urban and rural settings across different countries and regions, focusing on their contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. This review highlights how social, environmental, economic, and policy factors affect the success of IRSS compared to traditional systems common in developing nations. IRSSs can outperform traditional methods in sustainability, encouraging their adoption. However, there is a significant gap in policy integration that needs to be addressed for successful implementation. Further research is needed to better understand the contributing factors and their role in achieving sustainability. Integrating rainwater harvesting into national water policies could offer valuable guidance for policymakers and water resource managers in addressing issues like urban floods, water scarcity, and related social and environmental challenges in developing countries. Climate change and variability are increasingly affecting agriculture and livelihoods in developing countries, with India being particularly vulnerable. Drought is one of the major climatic constraints impacting large parts of the world. We examined the effects of drought on crop productivity, evaluated the effectiveness of technologies in mitigating these impacts and quantified the resilience gained due to technology adoption. Resilience score and resilience gain are the two indicators used to quantify resilience. The study utilized data gathered from two villages situated in Karnataka, southern India, which have implemented the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) program, along with data from one control village. Drought has significantly impacted the yields, and the extent of reduction ranged from 23 to 62% compared to the normal year. Adoption of climate-resilient technologies, including improved varieties, water management and livestock practices proved beneficial in increasing yield and income during drought years. The resilience score of various technologies ranged from 71 to 122%, indicating that the technologies had realized an increase in yields in the drought year in comparison to the normal year. The extent of resilience gain ranged from 7 to 68%, indicating that the adoption of technologies contributed to the yield advantage over the farmers' practice during drought. Water harvesting and critical irrigation have the highest resilience scores and gains, and in situ moisture conservation practices such as trench cum bunding (TCB) have comparable resilience scores and gains. The diversification of enterprises at the farm has a higher resilience score and gain. There is a need to identify climate-resilient technologies that can achieve higher resilience, as the solutions are context-specific. Further, promising technologies need to be scaled by adopting multiple approaches and by creating an enabling environment so as to increase resilience in agricultural systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flash flood-induced erosion is the primary contributor to soil loss within the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). This phenomenon is exacerbated by a confluence of factors, including extreme precipitation events, undulating topographical features, and suboptimal soil and water conservation practices. Over the past few decades, several flash flood events have led to the significant degradation of pedosphere strata, which in turn has caused landslides along with fluvial sedimentation in the IHR. Researchers have advocated morphometric, hydrologic, and semi-empirical methods for assessing flash flood-induced soil erosion in hilly watersheds. This study critically examines these methods and their applicability in the Alaknanda River basin of the Indian Himalayan Region. The entire basin is delineated into 12 sub-watersheds, and 13 morphometric parameters are analyzed for each sub-watershed. Thereafter, the ranking of sub-watersheds vulnerability is assigned using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), compounding method (CM), Geomorphological Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (GIUH), and Revised Universal Soil Loss Equations (RUSLE) approaches. While the CM method uses all 13 parameters, the PCA approach suggests that the first four principal components are the most important ones, accounting for approximately 89.7% of the total variance observed within the dataset. The GIUH approach highlights the hydrological response of the catchment, incorporating dynamic velocity and instantaneous peak magnifying the flash flood susceptibility, lag time, and the time to peak for each sub-watershed. The RUSLE approach incorporates mathematical equations for estimating annual soil loss utilizing rainfall-runoff erosivity, soil erodibility, topographic, cover management, and supporting practice factors. The variations in vulnerability rankings across various methods indicate that each method captures distinct aspects of the sub-watersheds. The decision-maker can use the weighted average to assign the overall vulnerability to each sub-watershed, aggregating the values from various methods. This study considers an equal weight to the morphometric, hydrological GIUH, and semi-empirical RUSLE techniques to assess the integrated ranking of various sub-watersheds. Vulnerability to flash flood-induced landslides in various sub-watersheds is categorized into three classes. Category I (high-priority) necessitates immediate erosion control measures and slope stabilization. Category II (moderate attention), where rainwater harvesting and sustainable agricultural practices are beneficial. Category III (regular monitoring) suggests periodic community-led soil assessments and afforestation. Sub-watersheds WS11, WS8, WS5, and WS12 are identified under category I, WS7, WS4, WS9, and WS6 under category II, and WS1, WS3, WS2, and WS10 under category III. The occurrence of landslides and flash-flood events and field observations validates the prioritization of sub-watersheds, indicating the need for targeted interventions and regular monitoring activities to mitigate environmental risks and safeguard surrounding ecosystems and communities. Land use and climate change studies have emerged as a critical component of current natural resource management and environmental monitoring strategies. Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) have proven to be instrumental in assessing and analysing changes in land use and land cover (LULC) and understanding the climate dynamics. In this study, a decadal analysis of annual maximum rainfall, LULC changes, and in turn, design runoff, is carried out to investigate the impact of the above factors on extreme events in the tropical basins of India. To this end, daily rainfall data from the year 1980 to 2019, LULC maps of 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2015 for four catchments of Mahanadi Basin and six catchments of Godavari Basin are utilized to estimate 50-year, 100-year and 200-year design rainfall, and in turn, design runoff, from four different decades, viz, 1980–89, 1990–99, 2000–09 and 2010–19. The design rainfall is estimated after fitting suitable distributions on the respective decadal rainfall series while the design runoff is estimated using the popular Natural Resources Conservation Service-Curve Number (NRCS-CN) method. Results showed that the decadal mean of annual maximum rainfall series increased from 1980–89 to 1990–99 and from 1990–99 to 2000–09 in seven out of ten catchments but declined in most catchments from the period 2000–09 to 2010–19, which indicates the dynamic nature of rainfall patterns over the tropical basins and highlights the importance of considering climate dynamics for hydrologic design purposes. Also, an increase in CN values from 1985 to 2015 in most of the catchments is mainly due to increased urbanization and reduced forest lands. This indicates intensification of runoff potential, which may lead to increased flood risk, soil erosion, and water quality degradation. The inferences from the study will aid policymakers in designing appropriate policies like sustainable land use practices, rainwater harvesting, and afforestation to ensure the well-being of communities in the face of changing climate and land use. Freshwater scarcity has become a critical global challenge affecting some of the most vulnerable populations. In response, significant effort has focused on ways to increase access to this precious resource. Within the context of geographical, cultural, political, and technological factors governing freshwater availability, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has demonstrated tremendous promise to help address these shortages. Specifically, mesh‐based fog harvesters have received considerable attention for their passive qualities compared with their energy‐dependent technological siblings (sorbents, condensation, etc.), yet their specific water yield (SY) has developed only modestly in recent decades. While the plant and animal kingdom provide diverse examples of passive fog collection, and science has developed a remarkable understanding of these processes, much of this knowledge has yet to be translated practically at scale. This is partially due to challenges in mass‐producing complex (often micro‐scale) structures observed in nature. Fortunately, manufacturing technology is catching up with scientific understanding, especially at the scale of mesh design. To this end, the review begins by surveying bioinspired research in fog harvesting. Afterward, this study identifies milestones in developing bioinspired fog harvesting meshes, concluding in a discussion of future mesh research opportunities connecting bioinspiration and emerging advanced manufacturing techniques. In this study, an efficient fog collector—type 1 and 2 cylindrical brush—has been introduced and its harvesting performance compared to other conventional collectors under field and laboratory conditions. Under field conditions, type 1 cylindrical brush with Raschel and aluminum mesh was installed in the inlet of the humidity front of the Caspian Sea to Ardabil plain in Abi-beyglu in the northwest of Iran. The results of the analysis of the collected water revealed that type 1 cylindrical brush collected 9.3% and aluminum mesh collected 4.3% more water than Raschel mesh. Under laboratory conditions, by applying different fog speeds, the performance of three conventional collectors and two proposed cylindrical brush were determined. The results indicated that type 2 cylindrical brush had the highest efficiency compared to others, and due to the lack of clogging, its efficiency did not diminish over time. Upon increasing the speed of the output fog, the amount of collected water and accordingly the efficiency of the collectors increased. Type 2 cylindrical brush showed the highest increase in efficiency at high fog speeds. Its maximum value reached about 50%, while the maximum efficiency of Raschel collector was equal to 28%. In general, it can be stated that cylindrical brush introduced in this study, in addition to the high performance of fog harvesting and the high efficiency of water collection, has a high resistance against strong winds. The present study aims to develop a protocol for determining the suitability of ponds in Nuh watershed, Haryana, India, using hydrological zoning, analytic hierarchy process, weighted overlay approach and geospatial techniques. Maximum area is in moderate and low run-off zones, with 50.43% and 32.4% of the area covering 104 and 129 ponds respectively. Area under least, moderate, high suitable zones are 33.2%, 51.92% and 11.38% respectively. Also, 137 more ponds are proposed, with 2, 49 and 86 ponds having very high, high and moderate suitable zones respectively. In this study, we successfully developed two novel vinylene‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) using 2‐connected 3,6‐dimethylpyridazine through Knoevenagel condensation. These COFs featured finely tailored micro‐/nano‐scale pore sizes, high surface areas and stable non‐polar vinylene linkages. Finely resolved powder X‐ray diffraction patterns demonstrated highly crystalline structures with a hexagonal lattice in the AA layer stacking. The resulting one‐dimensional channels possess strong hydrogen‐bond accepting sites arising from the decorated cis‐azo/azine units with two pairs of fully exposed lone pair electrons, endowing the as‐prepared COFs with exceptional water absorption properties. The g‐DZPH‐COF exhibited successive steep water uptake steps starting from low relative pressures (P/PSTA=0.1), with the remarkable water uptake capacity of 0.26 g/g at P/PSTA=0.2 (25 °C), which is the optimal value recorded among the reported COFs. Dynamic vapour sorption measurements revealed the fast kinetics of these COFs, even in the cluster formation process. Artificial recharge of groundwater has been recognized as a promising option for sustaining groundwater supplies and ensure water security for the ever rising population. With the aid of geospatial and multi-criteria decision analysis methodologies, the current study's scope aids in evaluating groundwater potential zones and locating suitable zones and sites for groundwater recharge for the revival of the Kanari River. A pragmatic methodology was suggested in this study for implementing water harvesting structures for river revival and estimation of water demand, pumping, and recharge. The geometric mean and the normalized weight for individual features were specified using the AHP in a GIS environment. All the different features/datasets were overlaid, and possible groundwater zones were revealed using AHP. Integrated maps were used to identify the groundwater recharge zone and locations for establishing artificial recharge structures within the Kanari River system. Ultimately, the domestic water demand, agriculture water use, pumping, and livestock water demand were estimated for water budgeting, and based on this data, the water availability was calculated. Based on the study results, the water demand of the Kanari River watershed was estimated to be 732 MCM. Taking into consideration the supply and demand scenarios, the pumping overdraft of the Kanari River watershed was found to be 423 MCM, and the proposed additional recharge through the planned conservation structures was estimated to be 859 MCM. So, even if pumping overdraft is considered, this additional groundwater recharge can fulfill the local demand, help maintain the river flow, and ensure water availability and security in the region. Rooftop rainwater harvesting (RRWH) offers a potential solution to Jordan's pressing water scarcity problems. Yet, its feasibility and benefits necessitate a thorough assessment, particularly as existing studies on the subject are outdated and often constrained by limited scope or small data sets. To this end, our study assessed the potential of RRWH in Jordan's 12 governorates, utilizing historical rainfall data from 1987 to 2018 and official statistics on population and rooftop areas. The analyses used the Ripple Method and Water Balance Model to determine potential harvestable water volumes, potential water-saving percentages, and optimal tank sizes under different scenarios (i.e., using rainwater to meet the total consumption or only for toilet flushing). The findings reveal that Jordan has a total potential for rooftop rainwater harvesting amounting to 23.74 Mm3/year, corresponding to 4.54% of the total water demand. Should RRWH be implemented across all rooftops, the projected financial savings for Jordan could range from $170 million to $678 million. Among the governorates, Irbid and Amman have the highest potential, with estimated yields of 7.754 Mm3 and 8.453 Mm3 per year, respectively. Based on the best results for the scenario where harvested rainwater is only used to flush toilets, the optimal tank sizes for storing rainwater were estimated to be 2.7 m3 and 2 m3 per household in Ajlun and Irbid, respectively. For a regularized case (October–May), a payback period of 12.5–24 years based on desalination cost was found for an RRWH system capable of meeting thrice the flushing needs of a household. The performance of irrigation schemes in Ethiopia is too low due to a lack of proper system management, water control structure, and strong water user association. This study aimed to assess small‐scale irrigation scheme's performance and proposed alternative mitigation for improved water management. Direct measurement, laboratory analysis, field observation, and stakeholder interviews were used to collect the primary data. The average conveyance efficiency, water surface elevation ratio, canal delivery capacity, adequacy, and equity of the Wezeqa and Gatto irrigation schemes were 86.37% and 75.4%, 55% and 60.3%, 71% and 55.8%, 0.68 and 0.67, and 0.4 and 0.43, respectively. The mean value of application and storage efficiencies of the Wezeqa and Gatto irrigation schemes were 59.8% and 49.4% and 94.3% and 92.2%, respectively. The effectiveness of infrastructure and weir sediment ratio in the Wezeqa irrigation scheme was 24.4% and 78.5%, respectively, and almost all infrastructures in the Gatto irrigation scheme were not functional. To solve the water shortage for both systems, water‐harvesting technology was proposed having a net volume of harvesting water during the night storage of 13,093.7 and 15,897.6 m3 for Wezeka and Gatto, respectively. Therefore, adopting water‐harvesting technology and establishing strong water user associations are recommended to minimize the water scarcity problem to improve water management and sustainability. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as promising portable and sustainable energy sources in daily life, harvesting energy from human motion, water, and wind. However, they still face limitations in aspects such as contact area, deformability, wettability, and manufacturing method. Here, a wearable TENG incorporating an anisotropic domino structure based on a fluorinated elastomer blend is presented. Because of its thin, elongated structure with broad sides, the TENG achieves substantially larger contact areas and high bendability. Introducing a fluorinated elastomer into the polydimethylsiloxane matrix via a simple blending process not only enhances the triboelectric performance but also reduces surface energy and improves the stretchability of elastomers. The anisotropic arrangement of dominoes, in synergy with the fluorinated elastomer, mimics the surface physicochemical properties of natural rice leaves, resulting in anisotropic superhydrophobic wetting behavior with a self‐cleaning effect and controlled directional water flow for efficient water energy harvesting. Therefore, the TENG functions as an energy‐harvesting leaf that captures energy from wind and water droplets, as well as a wearable energy‐harvesting wristband that generates power from human motions such as touching, shaking, and hand washing. The global water crisis demands immediate attention, and atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) provides a viable alternative. However, studying the real‐time subtle relationship between water absorption, diffusion, and internal structure for hygroscopic materials is challenging. Herein, a dynamic visualization technique is proposed that utilizes an in situ electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system and a precise reconstruction algorithm to achieve real‐time monitoring of the water sorption process within aerogels from an internal microstructural perspective. These results can be inferred that composites' pore sizes affecting the kinetics of their moisture absorption. In addition, the diffusion path of moisture absorption and the distribution of stored moisture inside aerogels exhibit intrinsic self‐selective behavior, where the fiber skeleton of the aerogel plays a crucial role. In summary, this work proposes a generic EIT‐based technique for the in situ and dynamic monitoring of the hygroscopic process, pointing to an entirely new approach regarding research on AWH materials. Fog harvesting, also known as fog collection, is a sustainable approach to addressing water scarcity which captures water droplets from fog, providing a renewable water source for water-scarce regions. The aim of this study is to give more background about fog harvesting by introducing fog harvesting systems, their advantages and disadvantages, real world and laboratory projects and efficiency. This study emphasizes fog harvesting's potential in arid regions with frequent fog occurrence, discusses working mechanisms, and explores nature-inspired and nanotechnology-based fog collectors. Local climate data's importance for feasibility assessment is highlighted, along with the vital role of community involvement for long-term success. Fog harvesting offers a promising and environmentally friendly solution to alleviate water scarcity challenges when combined with innovative strategies and community engagement. Real-world projects have shown that fog water collection can be an effective and sustainable solution, particularly in regions with persistent fog and limited water resources. In response to water scarcity in the Bashang area of northwest Hebei Province, a cold and arid region in north China, and to address the diminishing groundwater levels caused by pumping irrigation, this study investigated the impact of rainwater tank size and water supply on kidney beans production in greenhouses under various precipitation scenarios to determine the production potential and development strategies for regional precipitation resources. Under the background of average annual precipitation, kidney bean yield increased with increasing reservoir volume and shorter irrigation cycles. Under a 4-day irrigation cycle, the water demand satisfaction rate of kidney beans reached 100% water demand when the rainwater tank size was 15.7 m3. Against the wide variation in multi-year regional precipitation from 1992 to 2023, the annual effect of rainwater harvest was simulated using precipitation data collected 20 years with an 80% precipitation guarantee rate. The average minimum yield reduction rate obtained was 9.4%, and the corresponding minimum rainwater tank size was 29.5 m3. By superimposing the rainwater harvested in the shed and nonshed areas, the volume of the reservoir without yield reduction could be reduced to 20.0 m3. The sum of discharged and inventory water was much greater than the water scarcity in each water supply situation. Simulating and analyzing the effect of the relationship between rainwater tank size and water supply on rainwater harvesting in regional farmland by year provides important data affecting the construction of regional rainwater storage facilities and water supply efficiency. To achieve a high, stable yield of kidney beans grown in a greenhouse with shed film and shed area rainwater harvesting in north China, 2.6 m3 supplementary groundwater irrigation is still needed during the annual growing season. The arid and semi-arid region of Northwest China plays a significant role in potato production, yet yields are often hampered by drought due to limited precipitation and irrigation water. The ridge–furrow rainwater-harvesting technology is an efficient and widely used technique to relieve drought impact and improve crop yield by changing the micro-topography to harvest rainwater to meet the water demand of crops. An analysis of precipitation, water demand, and runoff data spanning 30 years guided the selection of suitable rainwater-harvesting methods tailored to meteorological conditions. The results showed that potato water demand exceeded precipitation in the region. The mulching approach performed best in the western arid region with the most significant increase in yield and water use efficiency (WUE) and was suitable for the western semi-arid region and the agro-pastoral ecotone. In the potato dryland farming areas, the water deficit increased from southeast to northwest. Specifically, northern Gansu, northern Ningxia, and midwestern Inner Mongolia experienced a water deficit of over 200 mm, and rainwater harvesting combined with irrigation was recommended. Conversely, regarding deficits below 200 mm in southern Gansu, Ningxia, and central Inner Mongolia, a 1:1 or 2:1 pattern of ridges could be applied, and mulching was needed only in the necessary areas. For the southern Qinghai, Shaanxi, and eastern Inner Mongolia regions, ridge–furrow rainwater harvesting could be replaced by flat potato cropping. In summary, rainwater harvesting addresses water deficits, aiding climate adaptation in Northwest China's arid and semi-arid regions. In this study, the medium-early maturing varieties ('HQY971' and 'QY1719') and the medium-late maturing varieties ('SY21' and 'SY28') were used to analysis the effects of meteorological factors on the grain water content of rapeseed varieties at different maturity stages. The Logistic power model was used to fit the active accumulated temperature (≥ 0°C) and grain water content of four rapeseed varieties from pollination to harvest between 2019 and 2020. The results showed that: (1) the grain water content of the four rapeseed varieties showed a slow decline first and then a rapid decline at the pollination-harvest stage. The average grain water content of the medium-early maturing varieties at physiological maturity stage was higher than that of the medium-late maturing cultivars. The average grain water content at harvest stage decreased with the extension of growth period. Among them, the grain dehydration rate of the medium-early maturing variety 'HQY 971' was 9.66 percentage points·d-1, which was significantly different from the other three rapeseed varieties. (2) The trend water content fitting curves of medium-early maturing varieties and mid-late maturing varieties showed an "S" shaped change trend. Moreover, the meteorological water content of medium-early maturing varieties was greatly affected by meteorological factors, while the meteorological water content of mid-late maturing varieties was less affected by meteorological factors. (3) The dehydration of rapeseed varieties at different maturity stages was mainly affected by meteorological factors such as average temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature and accumulated temperature. The average temperature (-1.125) had an indirect effect on the meteorological water content of the mid-early maturing varieties, while the maximum temperature (-0.347), minimum temperature (-0.472) and accumulated temperature (-0.936) had a direct effect. For the mid-late maturing varieties, the average temperature (-0.847) was indirect, while the maximum temperature (-0.288), minimum temperature (-0.250) and accumulated temperature (-0.877) were direct effects. (4) The path analysis showed that the R2 of each factor to the determinants of meteorological water content was 0.8433 (mid-early maturing varieties) and 0.8130 (mid-late maturing varieties), respectively, which indicated that accumulated temperature had the greatest impact on the meteorological water content of rapeseed varieties at different maturity stages. The fitting results of all equations in the stepwise regression analysis reached the extremely significant level, indicating that the influence of meteorological factors on meteorological water content can be explained to a certain extent. This study was conducted to determine the irrigation water demand due to solar radiation in high-tech greenhouses using hydroponic systems in Turkey's Mediterranean and continental climates, and to determine the annual water consumption and storage capacity with harvested rainwater. Intensive greenhouse cultivation and the recent increase in modern greenhouse cultivation were important factors in selecting the provinces for the study. The chosen provinces were Antalya and Adana, with a Mediterranean climate, and Afyonkarahisar and Kırşehir, with a continental climate. In this research, depending on the production period, the amount of water consumed per unit of area in greenhouses in Antalya, which has a Mediterranean climate, was determined to be 1173.52 L m−2 per yr−1, and in Adana, it was 1109.18 L m−2 per yr−1. In the provinces of Afyonkarahisar and Kırşehir, where a continental climate prevails, water consumption was calculated to be 1479.11 L m−2 per yr−1 and 1370.77 L m−2 per yr−1, respectively. Storage volumes for the provinces of Antalya, Adana, Afyonkarahisar and Kırşehir were found to be 438.39 L m−2, 122.71 L m−2, 42.12 L m−2 and 43.65 L m−2, respectively. For the provinces of Antalya, Adana, Afyonkarahisar and Kırşehir, the rates of rainwater harvesting and meeting plants' water consumption were calculated to be 80.79%, 54.27%, 27.47% and 25.16%, respectively. In addition, the amount of water fee savings that could be achieved by rainwater harvesting was calculated to be USD 901.3 per yr−1 for Antalya, USD 835.3 per yr−1 for Adana, USD 247.6 per yr−1 for Afyonkarahisar and USD 210.2 per yr−1 for Kırşehir. As a result, rainwater harvesting will not only provide economic gain to enterprises but will also be important in reducing the negative effects of irregular rainfall regimes caused by climate change on underground and surface water resources. Sugarbeets are largely produced without irrigation, making drought stress inevitable when rainfall is insufficient. Whether drought stress impacts root storage, however, is currently unknown. Research was conducted to determine the effect of preharvest water stress on postharvest sugarbeet root respiration rate and susceptibility to storage rots as these traits are the primary determinants for sucrose loss and quality deterioration. Greenhouse‐grown plants were subjected to four levels of water deficit by discontinuing watering for 0, 7, 14 or 21 days prior to harvest. Plants receiving water‐restrictive treatments displayed physiological stress by leaf epinasty, reductions in net photosynthetic rate and leaf relative water content and increases in leaf temperature, whereas the water content of roots harvested from these plants progressively decreased with the severity of the preharvest water‐deficit treatment. Harvested roots from all watering treatments were stored at 10°C and 95% relative humidity for up to 12 weeks and evaluated for respiration rate and susceptibility to storage rot. Root respiration rate during storage was inversely related to root water content at harvest by second‐order equations, such that respiration was not significantly affected by minor reductions in root water content but increased exponentially for roots obtained from severely drought‐stressed plants with water contents at harvest of ≤75%. Similarly, roots with water contents ≤75% had elevated levels of electrolyte leakage, a measure of cellular membrane damage, and were more susceptible to dehydration and fungal infection during storage. In separate experiments, roots harvested from water‐stressed plants were inoculated with Botrytis cinerea or Penicillium vulpinum, two causal agents for storage rots. In these experiments, preharvest water stress quantitatively increased root rot and qualitatively altered symptoms of their infection. Overall, these results demonstrate that severe preharvest drought stress is likely to significantly increase sugarbeet root storage losses caused by root respiration and storage rots and that storage losses are likely to accelerate with time in storage. The management of water resources is no longer an option but a necessity especially in countries with a high rate of population growth like Pakistan. Pakistan has a high-water scarcity, an extremely varying topography, and is also one of the countries encountering the problem of climate change. Therefore, prudent utilization of available water resources is a matter in the plains of Pakistan as in its high-altitude regions. Instead of wasting water which is a valuable resource, rainwater harvesting is a way of saving rainwater as an alternative source of fresh water for better use. The aim of this study was to search for potential rainwater-harvesting areas in a high-altitude Gilgit River basin. This research employed the SCS-CN technique in estimating surface runoff in the GIS environment. The geospatial study used four input parameters: slope of the land, land covers, surface runoff and drainage density. The research concluded that some lands, especially those that are deserted in dry area and agricultural lands, can serve as the sites of rainwater harvesting, with only 4% of area that was highly suitable for the purpose. Nevertheless, 37% of the investigated area was shown as totally unviable for rainwater collection installations because of steep slopes and substantial volume of snow. Simultaneously, the rainwater storage design solutions suggested were check dam, percolation tank, and agricultural ponds with the area of 3.5%, 1%, and 0.75% of the given land area, respectively, for rainwater harvesting. The locations of potential catchment and planned rainwater harvesting structures would assist the local authorities and the policy makers to provide plans and design on the construction of water storages and also the optimization of water use. In order to gain insights on the conditions of aqueous alteration on asteroid Ryugu and the origin of water in the outer solar system, we developed the measurement of water content in magnetite at the micrometer scale by secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) and determined the H and Si content of coarse‐grained euhedral magnetite grains (polyhedral magnetite) and coarse‐grained fibrous (spherulitic) magnetite from the Ryugu polished section A0058‐C1001. The hydrogen content in magnetite ranges between ~900 and ~3300 wt ppm equivalent water and is correlated with the Si content. Polyhedral magnetite has low and homogenous silicon and water content, whereas fibrous magnetite shows correlated Si and water excesses. These excesses can be explained by the presence of hydrous Si‐rich amorphous nanoinclusions trapped during the precipitation of fibrous magnetite away from equilibrium and testify that fibrous magnetite formed from a hydrous gel with possibly more than 20 wt% water. An attempt to determine the water content in sub‐μm framboids indicates that additional calibration and contamination issues must be addressed before a safe conclusion can be drawn, but hints at elevated water content as well. The high water content in fibrous magnetite, expected to be among the first minerals to crystallize at low water–rock ratio, points to the control of water content by local conditions of magnetite precipitation rather than large‐scale alteration conditions. Systematic lithological variations associated with water‐rich and water‐poor magnetite suggest that the global context of alteration may be better understood if local water concentrations are compared with millimeter‐scale distribution of the various morphologies of magnetite. Finally, the high water content in the magnetite precursor gel indicates that the initial O isotopic composition in alteration water must not have been very different from that of the earliest magnetite crystals. This study assesses the environmental impact of integrated water supply and sanitation management with a focus on wastewater and rainwater treatment. The study uses an integrated methodology including comparative data analysis, evaluation of water treatment technologies and environmental modeling. The results show that the integration of different treatment technologies such as physico-chemical and biological processes significantly improves water quality, making it suitable for reuse or safe discharge into ecosystems. The study emphasizes the effectiveness of these technologies in reducing environmental pollution, especially in urban areas. In addition, the analysis demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of integrated water management approaches that reduce water consumption and treatment costs, while emphasizing the importance of complying with water quality and environmental regulations. This study discusses the critical importance of sustainable access to clean water, particularly in regions facing severe water shortages. The study investigates the public perception of harvested rainwater as a solution to water scarcity in South Africa's semi arid regions. Conducted with 110 respondents, it explores demographics, rainwater harvesting practices, storage methods, and factors affecting satisfaction. Most households (39.6%) had four to six members, with a balanced gender distribution. Despite widespread unemployment (53.2%), 33.6% were graduates. Rainwater was harvested primarily during rainfall (64.9%), with 94.5% of the respondents collected from their own roofs. Storage methods included JoJo tanks (41.8%) and small buckets (54.5%). Concerningly, 95.5% did not test water quality, yet 64.5% found it acceptable. Regression analysis showed water quality significantly influenced satisfaction (b = 0.623, p < 0.005). The high prevalence of rainwater harvesting underscores its potential to address water shortages sustainably. Water scarcity is an escalating global concern that poses significant challenges to agriculture. The need to feed a growing population, coupled with changing climate patterns, demands a re-evaluation of water use efficiency in major field crops. Water efficiency in agriculture is a critical facet of sustainable water management in rural areas, where agriculture often serves as a primary economic activity. In rural regions, where water resources are often limited, efficient agricultural water management is vital to ensure food security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. In this review, we have discussed various measures to improve water use efficiency or productivity in agricultural systems. Adopting the strategies for enhancing water productivity at plant and field level may include: rain water harvesting in rural area, soil moisture conservation practices like mulching, crop residue retention and conservation agriculture, better utilization of stored soil moisture by best crop management interventions, irrigation scheduling, integrated farming systems i.e. multiple usage of water in agriculture by combining various farm enterprises like crop production, dairy and fishery. Beside these, reviewed the water use efficiency for important field crops around the world. Review also discussed about how beneficial public policies particularly watershed management in rural area are needed to establish the right socioeconomic conditions for boosting WUE in the agriculture. With the rapid growth of the population and the development of the economy, the shortage of freshwater resources has become a worldwide problem. Utilizing fog harvesting provides a practical solution to relieve the water shortage problem for residents in arid regions. This review summarizes the typical fog harvesting phenomena in nature in detail, the construction methods, fog harvesting performance, and the action mechanism of different biomimetic micro‐nano structures from one‐dimensional (1D), two‐dimensional (2D), and three‐dimensional (3D) perspectives. The influence of surface micro‐nano structure and wettability on water harvesting performance is analyzed. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of multi‐scale micro‐nano surface controllable water harvesting technology are summarized and prospected, which provides a good idea for the design of bioinspired micro‐nanomaterials and promotes water harvesting from scientific research to practical application. The research investigated how women employ various adaptation and coping mechanisms to alleviate food insecurity resulting from the impacts of climate change. The documentation of the debate on the role of women in adaptation and coping with climate change is relatively limited. Climate change's effect on food security in semi-arid areas could potentially increase the population of individuals residing in severe poverty. Over the past three decades, Africa's sub-tropics have experienced irregular rainfall and prolonged droughts, which have negatively affected agriculture and food production. This research utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches within a mixed-method design, guided by the pragmatic paradigm. Based on the results of the study, water harvesting/dam construction and income generating projects (IGPs) were identified as the most effective coping strategies for women. This study recommends implementing awareness campaigns to educate women farmers about the negative effects of climate change and the need for integrated and comprehensive capacity-building frameworks. In arid climates, conventional water resources are severely limited and stressed in the face of rapid population growth and future climate change. So, it is necessary to find alternative non-conventional water resources for use in drought situations. Additionally, the non-conventional water resources in these areas are not sufficient to meet future water demand. These resources might include rainwater harvesting, treated wastewater, and desalinated seawater. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) can be applied to store these resources in the hydrogeological system using Geo information System—Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (GIS-MCDA) approach for determining the suitable MAR location for storage. North-west Kingdom of Saudi Arabia area was chosen for this study because it is extremely arid, has high potential for social and economic development, and it has newly constructed non-conventional water infrastructures distributed throughout the area including water desalination plants, Tertiary Sewage Effluent (TSE) waste water plants, and flash-flood storage dams. To identify the suitable MAR site location and structure, different data related to aquifer hydrogeology, surface hydrology, hydrometeorology, and water quality were applied. Then, GIS-MCDA holistic approach was applied with aid of ordered weighting average (OWA) technique. Finally, two maps were created to show the MAR location and structure type. Potential map indicates that ~ 18.85% of the area is suitable for MAR installations. About 0.17% of the total area exhibited very high potential, where infiltration ponds can be applied, 1.86% had high potential for construction of check dams with diversion channels, and 16.82% had moderate potential for installation of recharge wells. Additionally, 56 MAR structures were proposed and a map showing their locations has been created. Thus, results indicated that the study area is promising for MAR installation. The rainwater tank is a critical component of the rainwater harvesting system and has a significant impact on the non-potable water saving efficiency and economic acceptability of the rainwater harvesting system. The choice of a suitable tank design to suit an existing catchment and local conditions is critical. In this paper, capacity is considered as a function of local rainfall data, unit price of tap water, roof area, non-potable water demand and an estimate of the cost of constructing a rainwater harvesting system. Analytical equations are derived that allow direct calculation of the desired cistern volume in terms of roof area and non-potable water demand. The validity of the analytical equations was demonstrated by comparing their results with the results of the sequential simulation, and the analytical equations proved to be adequate for the estimation of cisterns, but it was necessary to exclude some extreme scenarios due to the high deviation rate of the calculation results in the buildings with extremely high demand rates or extremely low roof areas. The proposed approach provides 'easy-to-use' design tools for engineers, architects, local authorities and rainwater tank manufacturers to estimate or recommend suitable sizes of rainwater cisterns. Agriculture is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Changes in precipitation and temperature patterns will result in long-term declines in production and short-term crop failures. These short- and long-run impacts are projected to be particularly severe in developing countries because of high exposure to climate change impacts and dependence on rain-fed agriculture. To overcome the challenges of a changing climate on agricultural production in West Africa, farmers implement a range of adaptation strategies. Using a systematic review of spatial–temporal empirical literature published on climate change adaptation in the West African ecological region and data collected from semi-structure interviews to farmers, we identified adaptation strategies in West Africa and explored their efficiency computing their cost–benefit ratio to examine farmers' private returns per dollar spent. Our results show that 91 adaptation strategies are employed by farmers in the sub-region, classified into six categories: cultural practices, forest management strategies, land management practices, water management strategies, risk management strategies and the use of improved technologies. Our results show that planting of trees, increased use of fertilizers, use of resistant varieties, mixed farming and crop diversification are the strategies that generate the highest returns, with highest annual mean net benefits. Mulching was also found a financial attractive as it generates the greatest returns per dollar spent ($3.2) and internal rate of return due to its low associated cost. The adaptation options that generate net mean annual losses were water harvesting, erosion control and making of big mounds. In a scenario with a 10% annual increase in annual benefits and costs over a period of five years, all the adaptation strategies, apart from water harvesting, will yield positive net present value benefits for the farmers. Since any climate change adaptation will inevitably have heterogenous financial implications to farmers, result from this study sheds light on farmers' private incentives to embark on adaptation strategies and provides information needed for decision support on adaptation measures choice selection, policy and planning across the sub region with relevance to other areas. In response to escalating water scarcity exacerbated by climate change and urbanization, this study introduces a sustainable solution for groundwater recharge in Pakistan's urban landscape. The implemented low-cost artificial recharge system, designed and established in June 2022, involves a 1.83 × 3.05 × 3.05 m (6 × 10 × 10 ft) pit filled with stones, coarse and fine crush, and sand layers, receiving rooftop runoff from a 39.63 × 10.99 m (130 × 36 ft) rooftop area of an office building. A borehole with perforated casing pipe of 15.24 cm (6 in) diameter and 15.24 m (50 ft) deep was installed in the pit for enhancing water recharge and filtration to the aquifer. Analyzing data from June 2022 to December 2023 reveals a positive correlation between rainfall and runoff, leading to a notable rise in the water table along with fulfilling the domestic water needs of more than 40 persons. The system demonstrates adaptability to urban settings, empowering communities themselves to manage water resources effectively. Its success highlights its potential for national scalability, offering a sustainable approach to groundwater replenishment amid growing water scarcity challenges. This groundwater recharge system may contribute to resilient water management in urban and agricultural landscapes, crucial for sustainable development and addressing emerging climate-change-induced water crises at the developing world, in general, and at the country level, in particular. Accurate and flexible control of droplets is essential in many industrial applications, such as water harvesting, chemical assays, and biological detection. Magnetic force‐based methods have been broadly exploited to fulfill the goals due to the advantage of non‐contact, easy control, and long‐range navigation. Nevertheless, it still suffers from some challenges, such as sample fouling, and the paradox between the droplet efficient motion and the large volume. Here a ferrofluid‐based liquid spring to achieve contamination‐free and fast droplet transportation on non‐wetting solid surfaces is proposed. The liquid spring is based on the actuation of a ferrofluid droplet in an external uniform magnetic field. The actuation enables the liquid spring to propel tiny objects, including the non‐magnetic miscible droplets and water‐repellent solid particles, with adjustable motion velocity. Furthermore, the magnetic force, applied on the ferrofluid via an additional permanent magnet, makes it possible to navigate the liquid spring in a programmable way. With the aid of the liquid spring, the single or multiple droplets/solid particles advancing, on‐demand droplets coalescence, and out‐of‐plane droplet motion are achievable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water–sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural–functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water–sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.
