The influence of floating marine debris (FMD) on coastal and marine communities and ecosystems is undeniable, and attention is increasingly focused on ecologically and biologically important coastal areas. To protect marine life and valuable resources from FMD pollution, identifying FMD accumulation zones is recognized as a priority. One of the coastal ocean processes found governing the distribution of FMD is water convergence (frontal zones). These fronts are driven by various oceanographical factors. To date, the transport and accumulation of FMD in relation to fronts in coastal areas is poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we reviewed various types of ocean fronts as well as FMD accumulation along frontal zones in coastal areas defined as the region between the coastline and the shelf break. Frontogenesis (physical processes related to frontal formation) were reviewed alongside studies on FMD accumulation in frontal zones to identify physical factors that drive the pathways and accumulation in these areas. Pollution from mineral exploitation is an important risk factor affecting surface water environment in mineral regions. It is urgent to construct a simple and accurate model to assess the surface water pollution risk from mineral exploitation in the regional scale. Thus, taking a mining province namely Liaoning in northeastern China as the study area, we proposed a framework to simulate the transport process of pollutants from mineral exploitation points to the surrounding surface water based on the "source-sink" theory. In our framework, we adopted the regional growth method (RGM) to extract the potential polluted water area as the certain "sink" considering the influence of the topography, and then applied Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model to assess the surface water pollution risk from mineral exploitation. The results revealed that: (1) 9.5% of the water areas were located at the potential impact area of MEPs. (2) The total value of resistance surface in Liaoning is relatively low, and gradually decreased from west to east. (3) MEPs in Liaoning had a high risk and seriously threatened the surface water environment, among 2125 MEPs, 733 MEPs (32.99%) were assessed as extremely high risk level, and about 35% of the MEPs were distributed within 10KM buffer zone of surface water. (4) Water pollution risk of MEPs in Dalian, Tieling, Fuxin and Dandong need to be emphasized. (5) Compared to previous studies, we considered the topographical influence before applying MCR model directly, so the results of water pollution risk were more reliable. Although benthic microbial community offers crucial insights into ecosystem services, they are underestimated for coastal sediment monitoring. Sepetiba Bay (SB) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, holds long-term metal pollution. Currently, SB pollution is majorly driven by domestic effluents discharge. Here, functional prediction analysis inferred from 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding data reveals the energy metabolism profiles of benthic microbial assemblages along the metal pollution gradient. Methanogenesis, denitrification, and N 2 fixation emerge as dominant pathways in the eutrophic/polluted internal sector (Spearman; p < 0.05). These metabolisms act in the natural attenuation of sedimentary pollutants. The methane (CH 4 ) emission (mcr genes) potential was found more abundant in the internal sector, while the external sector exhibited higher CH 4 consumption (pmo + mmo genes) potential. Methanofastidiosales and Exiguobacterium, possibly involved in CH 4 emission and associated with CH 4 consumers respectively, are the main taxa detected in SB. Furthermore, SB exhibits higher nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission potential since the norB/C gene proportions surpass nosZ up to 4 times. Blastopirellula was identified as the main responsible for N 2 O emissions. In many developed and developing nations, lakes are the primary source of drinking water. In the current scenario, due to rapid mobilization in anthropogenic activities, lakes are becoming increasingly contaminated. Such practices not only destroy lake ecosystems but also jeopardize human health through water-borne diseases. This study employs advanced hierarchical clustering through multivariate analysis to establish a novel method for concurrently identifying significantly polluted lakes and critical pollutants. A systematic approach has been devised to generate rotating component matrices, dendrograms, monoplots, and biplots by combining R-mode and Q-mode analyses. This enables the identification of contaminant sources and their grouping. A case study analyzing five lakes in Bengaluru, India, has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Additionally, one pristine lake from Jammu & Kashmir, India, has been included to validate the findings from the aforementioned five lakes. The study explored correlations among various physical, chemical, and biological characteristics such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, nitrates, biological oxygen demand (BOD), fecal coliform (FC), and total coliform (TC). Critical contaminants forming clusters included conductivity, nitrates, BOD, TC, and FC. Factor analysis identified four primary components that collectively accounted for 85% of the overall variance. Following identification of pollution hotspots, the study recommends source-based pollution control and integrated watershed management, which could significantly reduce lake pollution levels. Continuous monitoring of lake water quality is essential for identifying actual contaminant sources. Community-based marine debris removal efforts on the Hawaiian Islands of Kaua'i and Hawai'i, spanning 2013-2022, provided large datasets and documented remarkable variations in annual amounts of debris, mainly from abandoned, lost and derelict fishing gear. To test the hypothesis that the influx of marine debris on Hawaiian shores is determined by the proximity of the North Pacific garbage patch, whose pattern changes under the control of large-scale ocean dynamics, we compared these observational data with the output of an oceanographic drift model. The high correlations between the total mass of debris collected and the model, ranging between r = 0.81 and r = 0.84, validate the attribution of the strong interannual signal to significant migrations of the garbage patch reproduced in the model experiments. Floating marine debris (FMD) poses several threats to marine species, such as entanglement, ingestion, and the transport of pollutants. The Shiretoko Peninsula, located in northern Japan, is a registered World Natural Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot. However, FMD has not yet been thoroughly investigated in this region. In 2022, sighting surveys were conducted in Abashiri (west side of the peninsula) and Rausu (east side) to assess the abundance, composition, and distribution of FMD. The mean densities were notably higher in Abashiri, and there was more fishing-related debris in Rausu. Regarding local human activities, the population and number of tourists are higher in Abashiri, and fishing activities are higher in Rausu. Dissolved organic matter may offer a way to track and restore the health of fresh waters.

Sea turtles face considerable risks from ingesting marine debris. They are primarily visual feeders, so color may be important for identifying food suitability or enhancing prey detection. Here, we investigated the impacts of color and texture on foraging behavior in relation to plastic consumption. We experimentally assessed the influences of color and texture as attractors for sea turtles using edible jellyfish. The findings showed that the colors of objects significantly affected selective preferences, as evidenced by different behaviors by sea turtles in response to different colors. They exhibited diet-related selectivity toward colors similar to common aquarium food, and texture had a significant impact on complete ingestion. The results suggest that plastic resembling natural prey is more likely ingested. Also, sea turtles were attracted by the color yellow, suggesting that visually distinctive items can attract them. In the context of aquatic environmental issues, dynamic analysis of nano-sized inorganic water pollutants has been one of the key topics concerning their seriously amplified threat to natural ecosystems and life health. Its ultimate challenge is to reach a single-entity level of identification especially towards substantial amount of inorganic pollutants formed as natural or manufactured nanoparticles (NPs), which enter the water environments along with the potential release of constituents or other contaminating species that may have coprecipitated or adsorbed on the particles' surface. Here, we introduced a 'nano-impacts' approach-single entity collision electrochemistry (SECE) promising for in-situ characterization and quantification of nano-sized inorganic pollutants at single-entity level based on confinement-controlled electrochemistry. In comparison with ensemble analytical tools, advantages and features of SECE point at understanding 'individual' specific fate and effect under its free-motion condition, contributing to obtain more precise information for 'ensemble' nano-sized pollutants on assessing their mixture exposure and toxicity in the environment. Marine Debris is all-pervading in the world's oceans. In this research, for the first time, Floating Marine Debris (FMD) accumulation in the intertidal zone of Manprua island, an offshore island of Bangladesh, is reported. The assessment has been done by integrating both physical investigations and questionnaire survey. The Study shows high debris density on the windward and river-facing sides of the island. The density of debris items in this area varies from 550,000 to 60,000 items per km 2 (8.5 to 0.08 g/m 2 ) for transect samples during low tide and 350,000 to 60,000 items per km 2 (5.76 to 1.20 g/m 2 ) for net samples during high tide. However, the most damaging debris items are uprooted trees and water hyacinths because they hinder fishing activities. Using the Abstract Sifter tool to analyse PubMed, we reveal published mixture related research most commonly relates to water pollutants, pesticides, environmental pollutants, insecticides, soil pollutants, and chemicals described as persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic. Furthermore, we discern individual chemicals that also identify as priority chemicals in biomonitoring initiatives and using an ontology-based chemical classification, at the level of the chemical subclass, found these priority chemicals overlap with just 9% of the REACH chemical space.

The "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard" was implemented for water pollutant discharge in China's pesticide industry, which has no control requirements for particular wastewater pollutants in the industry. In the standard, certain pollutants discharge limits are limited strictly or loosely, resulting in practical management implementation difficulties. In view of the highly selective targeting characteristics of organic pesticide active ingredients in fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides, a method for deriving discharge limits based on the water quality criteria for pesticides for the protection of nonsensitive species is established based on the idea of fully protecting aquatic organisms beyond sensitive objects. Through the use of malathion as an example, by screening its toxicity data in different species of aquatic organisms, the sequence point with the most significant change in the acute toxicity sensitivity of the species is taken as the variation point in the cumulative frequency of the sensitive and nonsensitive species to derive the water quality criteria, using the species sensitivity distribution method as the scientific basis for determining the discharge limits. After a comparative analysis of different simulation models, the sigmoid model, with the best fit, is selected to determine that the sensitive species hazard concentration (HC s ) of malathion to aquatic organisms in China is 46.4 µg/L, and the discharge limit derived from the HC s based on the relationship between the environmental capacity and emissions is rounded to 250 µg/L. Studies showed that the relationship between the emissions limit derived from the water quality criteria for protecting nonsensitive species and malathion limit stipulated in the "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water" conforms to the corresponding relationship of the quality standard and discharge standard, which can be achieved by current pollution control technology, combined with water quality improvement. We analyzed plastic debris ingested by loggerheads from bycatch between 2007 and 2021 in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). We also analyzed plastic debris accumulated on beaches of the east coast of Madagascar as a proxy for ocean plastics to compare the characteristics of beached plastics and plastic ingested by turtles. We conducted a "brand audit" of the plastics to determine their country of origin. An oceanic circulation model was used to identify the most likely sources of plastics in the SWIO. In total, 202 of the 266 loggerheads analyzed had ingested plastics. Plastics categorized as "hard" and "white" were equally dominant in loggerheads and on beaches, suggesting no diet selectivity. Both the brand audit and circulation modeling demonstrated that Southeast Asia is the main source of plastic pollution in the region. To reveal the influence of the phosphorus chemical industry (PCI) on regional water environmental quality and safety, the water quality and ecotoxicological effects of a stream near a phosphorus chemical plant (PCP) in Guizhou Province, southwestern China, were investigated based on water samples collected from the stream. The results showed that the average concentrations of NH 3 -N, TN, P, F - , Hg, Mn, and Ni were 3.14 mg/L, 30.09 mg/L, 3.34 mg/L, 1.18 mg/L, 1.06 μg/L, 45.82 μg/L, and 11.30 μg/L, respectively. The overall water quality of the stream was in the heavily polluted category, and NH 3 -N, TN, P, F - , and Hg were the main pollution factors. The degree of pollution was in the order of rainy period > transitional period > dry period, and the most polluted sample site was 1100 m from the PCP. After 28 days of exposure to stream water, there was no significant change in the growth parameters of zebrafish. The gills of zebrafish showed a small amount of epithelial cell detachment and a small amount of inflammatory cell infiltration, and the liver tissue displayed a large amount of hepatocyte degeneration with loose and lightly stained cytoplasm. Compared with the control group, the %DNA in tail, tail length, tail moment, and olive tail moment were significantly increased (p < 0.05), indicating that the water sample caused DNA damage in the peripheral blood erythrocytes of zebrafish. Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1 . Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2 . Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity., (© 2023. The detection and quantification of p-Nitrophenol in environmental samples are important for understanding the extent and impact of environmental pollution, protecting human health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and guiding remediation efforts. The main objective of this work was to investigate the electrochemical performance of a graphene oxide/cellulose nanofibril composite (GO/CNF) modified carbon paste electrode (GO/CNF/CPE) for the sensitive and reliable detection of p-nitrophenol in water samples. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique was employed to enlighten the structure of nanocomposites. The electrochemical behavior of the fabricated electrochemical sensor was characterized via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under optimized analytical conditions, the peak current of the analyte showed a wide linear relationship with its concentration in a range of 3.0 nM-210 μM with a low amount of the limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.8 nM determined by the DPV method. Despite increasing interest in pharmaceutical emissions worldwide, studies of environmental contamination with pharmaceuticals arising from wastewater discharges in Saudi Arabia are scarce. Therefore, this study examined occurrence, mass loads and removal efficiency for 15 pharmaceuticals and one metabolite (oxypurinol) from different therapeutic classes in three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in Riyadh city in Saudi Arabia. A total of 144 samples were collected from the influents and effluents between March 2018 and July 2019 and analyzed using Solid Phase Extraction followed by triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS. The average concentrations in the influents and effluents were generally higher than their corresponding concentrations found either in previous Saudi Arabian or global studies. The four most dominant compounds in the influent were acetaminophen, ciprofloxacin, caffeine, and diclofenac, with caffeine and acetaminophen having the highest concentrations ranging between 943 and 2282 μg/L. Metformin and ciprofloxacin were the most frequently detected compounds in the effluents at concentrations as high as 33.2 μg/L. Ciprofloxacin had the highest mass load in the effluents of all three WWTPs, ranging between 0.20 and 20.7 mg/day/1000 inhabitants for different WWTPs. The overall average removal efficiency was estimated high (≥80), with no significant different (p > 0.05) between the treatment technology applied. Acetaminophen and caffeine were almost completely eliminated in all three WWTPs. The samples collected in the cold season generally had higher levels of detected compounds than those from the warm seasons, particularly for NSAID and antibiotic compounds. The estimated environmental risk from pharmaceutical compounds in the studied effluents was mostly low, except for antibiotic compounds. The rapid rise of microcystins (MCs) poses a serious threat to global freshwater ecosystems and has become an important issue of global public health. MCs have considerable stability and are the most widely distributed hepatotoxins. It cannot only accumulate in aquatic organisms and transfer to higher nutrients and levels, but also be degraded or transferred during the resource utilization of cyanobacteria. No matter which enrichment method, it will lead to the risk of human exposure. This review summarizes the research status of MCs, and introduces the distribution of MCs in different components of aquatic ecosystems. The distribution of MCs in different aquatic organisms was summarized, and the potential risks of MCs in the environment to human safety were summarized. MCs have polluted all areas of aquatic ecosystems. In order to protect human life from the health threats caused by MCs, this paper also proposes some future research directions to promote MCs control and reduce human exposure to MCs.

This research addresses the surface dispersion of coastal discharges in North America that end up at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The evolution of the discharged concentration is calculated through statistical simulations using transition matrices and dispersion ellipses, both based on historical records of surface drifter trajectories. The discharge points are adjacent to urban areas distributed along the coast. The preferential routes, times of arrival, and relative contributions of each site to the accumulation area are quantified. A new statistical delimitation of the position, area and orientation of the garbage patch is proposed. Additional experiments suggest that the tracer retention during the summer is influenced by the low-level atmospheric anticyclone in the Northeastern Pacific, which enhances the Ekman drift and hence favours debris convergence. Liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) techniques have experienced a tremendous growth over the last years but still face major challenges related to the use of more efficient and environmentally friendly solvents. Supramolecular solvents (SUPRASs) have proved outstanding efficiency in LLME, but many of the experimental conditions required for SUPRAS formation and/or application cannot be considered green or experimentally convenient. This paper was intended to make greener both SUPRAS formation and their application to the LLME of low-concentration organic pollutants in environmental waters. For this purpose, a variety of SUPRASs were produced at room temperature by simply mixing alkyl phosphonates (A 6-12 PO 3 H - and A 6-12 PO 3 -2 ) and tetrahexylammonium (He 4 N + ) ions in aqueous media. Among them, the SUPRASs produced from decyl hydrogen phosphonate (DePO 3 H - ) and He 4 N + allowed, for the first time, the development of SUPRAS-based LLMEs where the SUPRAS previously synthesized was added to the liquid sample, instead of being formed in situ as usual, which was proved particularly advantageous for analyses involving large sample/SUPRAS volume ratios. At near equimolar amounts of DePO 3 H - and He 4 N + , the amphiphile arranged in the SUPRAS as planar ribbons consisting of water (21 ± 3%, w/v) and DePO 3 H - and He 4 N + in the concentration range 1.0-1.4 M. The application of these SUPRASs to LLMEs was proved by extracting carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CPAHs) from drinking (tap and bottled) and natural (river, reservoir and underground) water (recoveries between 84 and 117% with standard deviations varying between 1 and 14%). The developed method was simple (it only required the addition of 500 μL of SUPRAS to 75 mL of sample, stirring and centrifugation), sensitive (method quantitation limits were below the maximum allowed limits set by the EU; were 0.6-7.1 ng L -1 ) and selective (SUPRAS extracts were directly analyzed by liquid chromatography-fluorimetry). The study established the water quality modelling of the Bosphorus system, based on hydrodynamic data as well as the results of the water quality survey carried out in the last five years. The model revealed significant decrease in the magnitude of pollutant loads in the upper layer at the exit into The Marmara Sea providing numerical proof that no pollutant transport would take place from sewage discharges to the upper layer. A similar modelling approach was implemented at the Bosphorus/Marmara interface, a significant hotspot as it included two major deep marine outfalls. The results asserted that the entire sewage flow would enter the lower flow in The Bosphorus through the interface without an appreciable mixing with the upper flow. Soil solution chemistry depends largely on mineralogy and organic matter properties of soil horizons with which they interact. Differing lithologies within a given catchment area can influence variability in soil cation exchange capacities and affect solute transport. Zero-tension and tension lysimeters were used to evaluate the fast transport of solutes in the topsoil vs. slow diffusional matrix flow at the subsoil of three contrasting lithology catchments in a mid-elevation mountain forest. Our aim was to test the feasibility of lysimeters' hydrochemical data as a gauge for legacy subsoil pollution. Due to contrasting lithologies, atmospheric legacy pollution prevailing at the soil-regolith interface is differently yet consistently reflected by beryllium, lead, and chromium soil solution concentrations of the three catchments. Geochemical (dis)equilibrium between the soil and soil matrix water governed the hydrochemistry of the soil solutions at the time of collection, potentially contributing to decreased dissolved concentrations with increased depths at sites with higher soil pH. A complementary isotopic δ 18 O runoff generation model constrained potential seasonal responses and pointed to sufficiently long water-regolith interactions as to permit important seasonal contributions of groundwater enriched in chemical species to the topsoil levels. Our study also reflects subsoil equilibration with atmospheric solutes deposited at the topsoil and thus provides guidance for evaluating legacy pollution in soil profiles derived from contrasting lithology., (© 2023. This study provides the first data on the distribution, sources, and transport dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica via summertime analyses of lakes, seawater, snow, and air in 2013. Relatively high PAH levels and similar composition profiles (dominance of two- and three-ring PAHs) in the investigated marine and terrestrial environmental matrices were found, indicating substantial primary emissions of petrogenic PAHs. This result was corroborated by nonequilibrium partitioning of atmospheric PAHs caused by release of anthropically-derived lighter PAHs and air mass movement trajectories mainly originated from the Antarctic marginal seas. Notable geographical disparities of PAH pollution in the various types of samples consistently suggested impacts of station-related activities, rather than long-range atmospheric transport, on PAHs in Fildes Peninsula. The lack for temperature dependence for gas-phase concentrations and various molecular diagnostic ratios of atmospheric PAHs demonstrated that the impact of local anthropogenic inputs on air PAH variability supersedes the re-emission effect. The derived air-water and air-snow exchanges of PAHs in this remote region indicated a disequilibrium state, partially associated with intense local emissions of PAHs. PAH outgassing from, and absorption into, lake and marine waters were both observed, probably due to differences in anthropogenic influences among sites, while the net deposition of gaseous PAHs into snow prevailed. Herbicides are used constantly in agriculture to enhance productivity across the globe. This herbicide monitoring requires utmost importance since its high dose leads to ecological imbalance and a negative impact on the environment. Moreover, a quantification of toxic herbicide is one of the important problems in the food analysis. In this work, deals with the development of a simple, and facile one-pot sonochemical synthesis of strontium doped La 2 S 3 (Sr@La 2 S 3 ). Morphological and structural characterization confirms the doping of Sr@La 2 S 3 to generate a hierarchical layered structure. The electrochemical performance of modified with rotating disk electrode (RDE) using Sr@La 2 S 3 composite is high, compared to La 2 S 3 and bare electrodes towards the quantitative detection of mesotrione (MTO) in phosphate buffer. Sr@La 2 S 3 /RDE showed good sensitivity for MTO detection and it exhibit a range of 0.01-307.01 μM and limit of detection of 2.4 nM. Besides, the selectivity of fabricated electrode is high as it can electrochemically reduce MTO particularly, even in the presence of other chemicals, biological molecules and inorganic ions. The repeatability of MTO detection is high even after 30 days with a lower RSD values. Due to fishery-tailored gear, shrimpers are often affected by benthic marine debris, specifically derelict crab traps. To alleviate the impacts on the commercial shrimping industry in the Mississippi Sound, a team of natural resource professionals and stakeholders developed a derelict crab trap removal incentive program for commercial shrimpers. In three years, this program led to the removal of 2904 derelict crab traps from the north-central Gulf of Mexico at a total average cost of $35,595 per year to implement the program, or $53 per derelict crab trap. Results from this study showed the cost of the program could further be reduced while covering the same shrimping area, through the inclusion of fewer disposal locations and targeting active and engaged shrimpers. Drinking water is an important natural resource. For many people worldwide, especially in developing countries, access to safe drinking water is still a dream. An increasing number of human activities and industrialization have caused various physical, chemical, and biological pollutants to enter water bodies, affecting human health. Water pollutants contain a vast number of additives, such as perfluorinated chemicals, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, phthalate, nanomaterials, insecticides, microcystins, heavy metals, and pharmacologies. In this work, we aim to explore the potential relationship between water pollutants and human diseases. Here, we explored an integrative approach to identify genes, biological processes, molecular functions, and diseases linked to exposure to these water pollutants. These processes and functions affected by water pollutants are related to many diseases, including colonic neoplasms, breast neoplasms, hepatitis B, bladder cancer, and human cytomegalovirus infection. In addition, further analysis revealed the genes that play a key role in the human diseases induced by water pollutants. Therefore, conducting an integrative toxicogenomic analysis of water pollutants is more appropriate for evaluating the potential effects of water pollutants on human health.

Arsenic is a toxic non-metallic element that is widely found in nature. In addition, arsenic and arsenic compounds are included in the list of Group I carcinogens and toxic water pollutants. Therefore, rapid and efficient methods for detecting arsenic are necessary. In the past decade, a variety of small molecule fluorescent probes have been developed, which has been widely recognized for their rapidness, efficiency, convenience and sensitivity. With the development of new nanomaterials (AuNPs, CDs and QDs), organic molecules and biomolecules, the conventional detection of arsenic species based on fluorescence spectroscopy is gradually transforming from the laboratory to the portable kit. Therefore, in view of the current research status, this review introduces the research progress of both traditional and newly developed fluorescence spectrometry based on novel materials for arsenic detection, and discusses the potential of this technology in the rapid screening and field testing of water samples contaminated with arsenic. The review also discusses the problems that still exist in this field, as well as the expectations.

This research offers a unique interval by using the predicting approach for discharge indicators of water quality data such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). This is considered one of the significant quality metrics in wastewater treatment plants for water quality management as well as surveillance. To begin, the effluent information for BOD/NH3-N and their supplementary parameters are gathered. Hence BOD and NH3 are considered major feature sources for estimating water pollutants. BOD is high then oxygen level is very low in the water due to pollutants or algae. Ammonia nitrogen is an organic waste component in water from sewage. The significant characteristics with good correlation levels of BOD and NH3-N are examined and identified using a grey correlation analysis method after certain basic data pre-processing procedures. The BOD/NH3-N effluent information of a water treatment plant is predicted using an upgraded feed-forward neural network with the least square support vector machine (FFNN-LSSVM) method. An optimization approach for an enhanced feed-forward neural network (IFFNN) is built by Machine Learning Algorithms. The IFFNN used regular influent water quality, influent rate of flow, and Wastewater performance monitoring and operational conditions as input parameters. For future prediction, input variables were previous different wastewater quality measurements. In many intensive animal production areas, the over-application of manure has resulted in a build-up of soil phosphorus (P) and the creation of legacy P soils that threaten water quality. We investigated dissolved P forms losses in runoff using simulated rainfall in packed soil boxes amended with three poultry litter and products, including raw (unprocessed) litter, granulated litter with the addition of urea, and heated raw litter. These were applied at 3 kg water-extractable P (WEP) ha -1 as determined with three litter-to-water extraction ratios (1:10, 1:100, and 1:200). Over three simulated rainfall events, the amount of dissolved reactive P (DRP) lost was significantly greater in runoff from soils amended with granulated litter (1.09 ± 0.02 kg ha -1 ) than raw (0.81 kg ha -1 ) and heated (0.58 kg ha -1 ) litters. No significant differences in the amount of dissolved unreactive P (DUP) in runoff (0.38 ± 0.07 kg ha -1 ) were observed among three litter amended soils. The soil test P (i.e., Mehlich 3-P) increased from 6.9 mg kg -1 in control to 10.4-11.6 mg kg -1 in litter amended soils, whereas the total WEP (0.26 ± 0.03 mg kg -1 ) in soils was similar after three rainfall simulation events. In order to understand the sources of pollutants and the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the water quality in Cihu Lake, China, the monitoring data of seven water quality indicators from 12 sampling sites from 2015 to 2019 were selected, and the temporal and spatial variation laws of the water quality and pollution sources were analyzed by the use of the multivariate statistical analysis method. The results show that nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the lake is dominant. The average concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) exceed the surface water quality Class III standards by 1.6 and 2.2 times, respectively. Spatially, the results of the cluster analysis showed that the water quality in Cihu Lake can be categorized into three regions: the northern half of the lake, the southern half of the lake, and the canal entering the lake. Temporally, the water quality in these three regions can be classified into three categories: March to May (the northern half of Cihu Lake), September to November (the southern half of Cihu Lake), and September (the canal entering Cihu Lake). The discriminant analysis results showed that NH 3 -N, TN, COD Cr , and BOD 5 are the main factors that affect the uneven spatial distribution of the water quality of Cihu Lake, while TN, DO, and COD Mn are the main factors that affect the temporal difference in the northern half of Cihu Lake, and NH 3 -N, TP, COD Cr , DO, COD Mn , TN, and TP are the main factors affecting the temporal difference in the southern half of Cihu Lake and the canal entering Cihu Lake. It was found that the water pollution in the study area can be mainly attributed to the incoming water and urban domestic pollution. Real-time chemical sensing is crucial for applications in environmental and health monitoring 1 . Biosensors can detect a variety of molecules through genetic circuits that use these chemicals to trigger the synthesis of a coloured protein, thereby producing an optical signal 2-4 . However, the process of protein expression limits the speed of this sensing to approximately half an hour, and optical signals are often difficult to detect in situ 5-8 . Here we combine synthetic biology and materials engineering to develop biosensors that produce electrical readouts and have detection times of minutes. We programmed Escherichia coli to produce an electrical current in response to specific chemicals using a modular, eight-component, synthetic electron transport chain. As designed, this strain produced current following exposure to thiosulfate, an anion that causes microbial blooms, within 2 min. This amperometric sensor was then modified to detect an endocrine disruptor. The incorporation of a protein switch into the synthetic pathway and encapsulation of the bacteria with conductive nanomaterials enabled the detection of the endocrine disruptor in urban waterway samples within 3 min. The need of the hour relies on finding new but sustainable ways to curb rising pollution levels. The accelerated levels of urbanization and increase in population deplete the finite resources essential for human sustenance. In this aspect, water is one of the non-renewable sources that is running out very fast and is polluted drastically day by day. One way of tackling the problem is to reduce the pollution levels by decreasing the usage of chemicals in the process, and the other is to find ways to reuse or reduce the contaminants in the effluent by treatment methods. Most of the available water recycling or treatment methods are not sustainable. Some of them even use toxic chemicals in the processing steps. Treatment of organic wastes from industries is a challenging task as they are hard to remove. Electrocoagulation is one of the emerging water treatment technologies that is highly sustainable and has a comparatively cheaper operating cost. Being a broad-spectrum treatment process, it is suitable for treating the most common water pollutants ranging from oils, bacteria, heavy metals, and others. The process is also straightforward, where electrical current is used to coagulate the contaminates. The presence of carcinogens in these waste water increases the need for its treatment towards further use. The present investigation is made as an extensive analysis of the emerging carcinogens and their various sources from process industries, especially in the form of organic waste and their removal by electrocoagulation and its coupled techniques. We explore the oft-repeated claim that river water quality in Great Britain is "better now than at any time since the Industrial Revolution". We review available data and ancillary evidence for seven different categories of water pollutants: (i) biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia; (ii) heavy metals; (iii) sewage-associated organic pollutants (including hormone-like substances, personal care product and pharmaceutical compounds); (iv) macronutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus); (v) pesticides; (vi) acid deposition and (vii) other variables, including natural organic matter and pathogenic micro-organisms. With a few exceptions, observed data are scarce before 1970. However, we can speculate about some of the major water quality pressures which have existed before that. Point-source pollutants are likely to have increased with population growth, increased connection rates to sewerage and industrialisation, although the increased provision of wastewater treatment during the 20th century will have mitigated this to some extent. From 1940 to the 1990s, pressures from nutrients and pesticides associated with agricultural intensification have increased in many areas. In parallel, there was an increase in synthetic organic compounds with a "down-the-drain" disposal pathway. The 1990s saw general reductions in mean concentrations of metals, BOD and ammonia (driven by the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive), a levelling out of nitrate concentrations (driven by the EU Nitrate Directive), a decrease in phosphate loads from both point-and diffuse-sources and some recovery from catchment acidification. The current picture is mixed: water quality in many rivers downstream of urban centres has improved in sanitary terms but not with respect to emerging contaminants, while river quality in catchments with intensive agriculture is likely to remain worse now than before the 1960s. Water quality is still unacceptably poor in some water bodies. Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to plastic exposures, and the associated chemical additives, due to their feeding strategies. The species Caretta caretta is a proposed sentinel of plastic pollution worldwide. Thus, there is a need to find adequate biomarkers of plastic exposure through non-invasive protocols for this IUCN protected species. Plasmatic acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and carboxylesterase (CE) which participate in xenobiotic and endogenous metabolic reactions could all serve as biomarkers, as they are responsive to plasticizers and have already proved adequate for identifying organophosphorus esters exposures. Here we measured plasmatic B-esterases in wild specimens captured as accidental by-catch. Measurements were taken in each individual either at entry into the rehabilitation program or immediately before release after a recovery period. For CE measurements, 4 commercial substrates were used as potentially indicative of distinct enzyme isoforms. Increased activity was seen with the butyrate-derived substrates. Plasmatic CE activities were over one order of magnitude higher than AChE and BuChE substrates. Moreover, an in vitro protocol with the inclusion of plastic additives such as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), bisphenol A and some of its analogues was considered a proxy of enzymatic interactions. A clear inhibition by TBBPA was found when using commercially purified AChE and recombinant CE proteins. Overall, from in vitro and in vivo evidences, CEs in plasma are sensitive and easily measurable and have been shown to significantly increase after turtles have been rehabilitated in rescue centres. Nevertheless, the inclusion of plastic (or plasticizers) characterisation would help to confirm its association with plasmatic enzyme modifications before they can be adopted as biomarkers of plastic contamination., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Due to extensive water exchanges and abundant active biochemical compositions, active and complex hydrogeochemical processes often exist in riverbank filtration (RBF). The distribution of microbes is considered to be profoundly affected by these processes and is considered to impact the hydrogeochemical processes and the migration and transformation of water pollutants in turn and then impact the water quality. The distribution of microbes and their response to the physiochemical properties along a vertical RBF profile perpendicular to the Songhua River in Northeast China was explored by using 16 S rRNA and redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that various microbes were found in the vertical riparian filter (RBF) curve, including Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Firmicutes. With increasing depth (vertical) and distance from the river (lateral), the microbial community and diversity in the RBF sediment profile decreased. Nitrospirota, Pseudomonas, Gammaproteobacteria, Ochrobactrum, Acinetobacter and Desulfobacterota of the RBF core taxa were also significantly correlated with the biotransformation behavior of typical groundwater pollutants (ammonia, Fe, Mn and S). The amount of As in the RBF is too low to sustain microbial survival. Some microbes in RBF can also degrade natural organic pollutants. Liquid-liquid extraction based on surface nanodroplets can be a green and sustainable technique to extract and concentrate analytes from a sample flow. However, because of the extremely small volume of each droplet (<10 fL, tens of micrometers in base radius and a few or less than 1 μm in height), only a few in situ analytical techniques, such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, were applicable for the online detection and analysis based on nanodroplet extraction. To demonstrate the versatility of surface nanodroplet-based extraction, in this work, the formation of octanol surface nanodroplets and extraction were performed inside a 3 m Teflon capillary tube. After extraction, surface nanodroplets were collected by injecting air into the tube, by which the contact line of surface droplets was collected by the capillary force. As the capillary allows for the formation of ∼10 12 surface nanodroplets on the capillary wall, ≥2 mL of octanol can be collected after extraction. The volume of the collected octanol was enough for the analysis of offline analytical techniques such as UV-vis, GC-MS, and others. Coupled with UV-vis, reliable extraction and detection of two common water pollutants, triclosan and chlorpyrifos, was shown by a linear relationship between the analyte concentration in the sample solution and UV-vis absorbance. Moreover, the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2 × 10 -9 M for triclosan (∼0.58 μg/L) and 3 × 10 -9 M for chlorpyrifos (∼1.05 μg/L) could be achieved. The collected surface droplets were also analyzed via gas chromatography (GC) and fluorescence microscopy. Our work shows that surface nanodroplet extraction may potentially streamline the process in sample pretreatment for sensitive chemical detection and quantification by using common analytic tools.

Industry wastewater is considered one of the worst polluters of our precious water ecologies. However, the types of pollutants present in wastewater from industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWTPs) are still unclear. In this study, a simple and effective chemical fingerprinting method for checking the source-sink relationships among different industrial wastewaters and their effluent-receiving river was established. 107, 228, 155, and 337 chemicals were screened out in wastewater from electronics, steel, textile, and printing and dyeing plants, respectively. Chemical fingerprinting of the detected chemicals was performed, and results showed that aromatic compounds were the most prevalent among the pollutant categories (i.e., 56, 189, and 168 in electronics, iron and steel, and printing and dyeing plants, respectively). The traceability analysis of the chemicals selected in the effluent determined the characteristic pollutants of different industrial enterprises. Sixty-eight compounds were identified as the characteristic pollutants in the different process stages of wastewater of the four IWTPs. Of the 84 effluent-receiving river water signature pollutants, 47.6% (n = 40) were also detected in the effluent from the four IWTPs. A robust description of the bioavailability of Ni(II) in freshwaters is fundamental for the setting of environmental quality standards. Current approaches assume that bioavailability is governed by the equilibrium concentration of the free metal ion in the bulk aqueous medium. Such strategies generally have limited predictive value: a suite of empirical fitting parameters is required to deal with variations in water chemistry. Herein we compile data on Ni(II) speciation under typical freshwater conditions and compute the lability of Ni(II) complexes with typical molecular and nanoparticulate components of dissolved organic carbon. In combination with an analysis of the kinetic setting of Ni(II) biouptake by freshwater organisms, we assess the potential contribution from dissociation of Ni(II) complexes to the diffusive supply flux of free Ni 2+ . The strategy takes into account the absolute and relative magnitudes of the Michaelis-Menten bioaffinity and bioconversion parameters for a range of freshwater organisms, together with dynamic chemical speciation descriptors under environmentally relevant conditions. The results show that the dissociation kinetics of Ni(II) complexes play a crucial role in buffering the free metal ion concentration at the biointerface. The overuse of antibiotics in recent years presents a huge challenge to society for their removal from the environment. The prolonged presence of antibiotics as environmental pollutants results in the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria faster than new antibiotics to treat diseases they cause. Therefore, a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective method is urgently required to detect and degrade antibiotics. Given this, a novel strategy has been devised for synthesizing Fe-doped carbon dots (Fe-N@CDs) and iron oxide-carbon dot hybrid nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -CDs) in a single step for doxycycline detection and its degradation. For the very first time, the formation of two simultaneous products, i.e. , Fe-N@CDs (0 D fluorescent carbon dots) and Fe 3 O 4 -CDs (magnetic nanoparticles) in a single step hydrothermal carbonization process by using a sole iron salt (FeCl 2 ) and carbon precursor (citric acid) in the presence of ethylenediamine is reported. The as prepared Fe-N@CDs selectively detect doxycycline with a limit of detection value of 66 ng mL -1 and in the linear range from 0 mg mL -1 to 50 mg mL -1 , whereas the other formed products, i.e. , Fe 3 O 4 -CDs, degrade doxycycline by 70.26% in just 5 min by applying shear force using simply a kitchen blender. The results demonstrated the suitability and application scope in food and environment safety.

Pollution of the marine environment by plastic marine debris has become one of the most pervasive threats impacting marine environments. In this study, for the first time, we evaluate the polymer types of the plastic marine debris ingested by 49 green and 14 loggerhead sea turtle strandings in the Gulf of Oman. Plastic marine debris was ingested by 73.5% of green and 42.9% of loggerhead sea turtles in this study. Overall, evidence suggested that green sea turtles from the Gulf of Oman coast of the United Arab Emirates ingested high levels of plastic marine debris, predominantly Polypropylene (PP) & Polyethylene (PE), followed by Nylon, PP-PE mixture, Polystyrene (PS), Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), respectively. Loggerhead sea turtles also ingested high levels of plastic marine debris, which also predominantly consisted of PP & PE, followed by PP-PE mixture, Nylon and PS. The ingestion of anthropogenic plastic debris by marine wildlife is widespread in the Mediterranean Sea. The endangered status (in the IUCN Red List) of Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta, Linnaeus, 1758) is a consequence of its vulnerability. In this study, macro-/meso-plastics (5-170 mm) collected from faeces of twelve loggerhead turtles rescued (live) in the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) were analyzed by size, weight, shape, color and polymer type through Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The defecation rate during hospitalization (7-14 days) varied among turtles (from 0.08 to 0.58). The mean number of plastic expulsions (2.7 ± 1.8 items for turtle) was higher during the 5th day of hospitalization (Kruskal-Wallis test, P = 0.01). However, the mean number of plastic-like items defecated during the common days of hospitalization did not vary among turtles (Kruskal-Wallis test, P > 0.05). All turtles were found to have ingested plastic. A total of 114 debris items were recovered from their faeces, 113 of which were identified as plastic. Their color was mostly white-transparent (64.9%) and light (19.3%). Shape was mainly fragments (52.6%), sheets (38.6%), followed by nylon, net-fragments, elastic plastic, foamed plastic and industrial granules (8.8%). Meso-plastics (5-25 mm) represented 72% of the total number of debris and were found more frequently in turtle with Curved Carapace Length (CCL) ≤ 60 cm (CCL = 30-60 cm, n = 5) than those with CCL >60 cm (CCL = 60-71 cm, n = 7). Plastic items were composed mainly of polyethylene (48.2%) and polypropylene (34.2%). Polypropylene (R 2  = 0.95, P < 0.001) and polyisoprene (R 2  = 0.45, P = 0.017) were more common in meso-plastics while polyethylene (R 2  = 0.44, P < 0.01) in macro-plastics. Finally, high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide and polyurethane were also found in some turtles. This study reveals high spreads of plastic contamination in faeces of both turtles with CCL ≤60 cm and CCL >60 cm, particularly vulnerable to the increasing quantity of floating plastic into their foraging sites highlighting the need of further research to associate debris ingestion with turtle diet and their size., (Copyright © 2022. Plastic waste has become ubiquitous pollutants in seas and oceans and can affect a wide range of species. For some marine species, plastic debris could pose a considerable threat through entanglement, ingestion, and habitat degradation and loss. Sea turtles are one of the most sensitive species, as their migratory behaviour and multifaceted life cycles make these reptiles especially vulnerable to the negative effects of plastic debris. The present study aimed to assess the amount and composition of plastic debris ingested by loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta, Linnaeus, 1758) in the Balearic Islands Sea, thusly providing new information to complete the knowledge for this topic. In this work, 45 stranded dead C. caretta specimens were necropsied, and their digestive tract content analysed for the presence of plastic debris. Plastic objects were observed in 27 individuals (60.0%), with an average of 12.7 ± 4.7 plastic items per turtle. Litter in the faecal pellet was also monitored in 67 living individuals, observing plastic elements in 46 (68.7%) of the specimens, reporting an average of 9.7 ± 3.3 plastic elements per individual. Overall, 785 plastic items were found, measured, weighed and categorized according to size, colour, shape, and type of polymer. The main elements ingested were plastic sheets that were found in 65.3% of the turtles analysed, being white (42.7%) and transparent (29.2%) the most predominant colours. Most elements were macroplastics (59.3%), while microplastics were not found. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FT-IR) analysis showed that high-density polyethylene and polypropylene were the main polymer plastics, representing 42.3% and 33.8% of the total, respectively. Fine sediment transport in rivers is important for catchment nutrient fluxes, global biogeochemical cycles, water quality and pollution in riverine, coastal and marine ecosystems. Monitoring of suspended sediment in rivers with current sensors is challenging and expensive and most monitoring setups are restricted to few single site measurements. To better understand the spatial heterogeneity of fine sediment sources and transport in river networks there is a need for new smart water turbidity sensing that is multi-site, accurate and affordable. In this work, we have created such a sensor, which detects scattered light from an LED source using two detectors in a control volume, and can be placed in a river. We compare several replicates of our sensor to different commercial turbidity probes in a mixing tank experiment using two sediment types over a wide range of typical concentrations observed in rivers. Our results show that we can achieve precise and reproducible turbidity measurements in the 0-4000 NTU or 0-16g/L range. Our sensor can also be used directly as a suspended sediment sensor and bypass an unnecessary calibration to Formazin. This study aimed to investigate the changes of swine and dairy manure characteristics during a long-term storage (150-180 days) under 4 °C, 20 °C, and 37 °C, sealed and unsealed conditions. Water extractable phosphorus (WEP) of both manures rapidly increased during the first 15-30 days and then decreased. At the end of the storage, the WEP reduction was 90%±3% and 71%±5% of the initial concentration for swine manure and dairy manure, respectively. Generally, unsealed storage and higher temperatures led to more WEP reduction. This study suggested that manure stored for less than 30 days had the highest P runoff potential, while a long-term manure storage reduced P runoff potential compared to freshly excreted manure., (Copyright © 2022. In this study we have established a monitoring scheme to determine the presence and distribution of widely used pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organophosphate esters (OPEs) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water bodies from Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) from Spain. The monitoring scheme included the georeferenced sampling of rocky mountain, Atlantic forest, riparian forest, Mediterranean forest, agricultural, inland aquatic and coastal aquatic IBAs, with the aim to evaluate the impact of widely used chemicals in those aquatic resources. Water samples were extracted using a generic solid-phase extraction protocol and analyzed by 3 analytical methods based on liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Quality parameters such as compound recovery, intra and inter-day variation, linearity and limits of detection were calculated in order to validate the methods. In addition, the ionization conditions and the optimization of the most appropriate transitions permitted unequivocal identification. Once the sampling and analytical procedure was set-up, 59 target compounds were monitored in 63 samples. Pharmaceutical, followed by pesticides, OPEs and PFAS were widespread along all IBAs studied at concentrations from 0.5 to 41083 ng/L. In plasticized (2-nitro-phenyloctyl ether (o-NPOE)) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane incorporating (N,N-diethyl-5-(octadecanoylimino)-5H-benzo[a] phenolxazine-9-amine (ETH 5294) and sodium tetraphenyl borate (NaTPB), an ionophore 5-(2',4'-dimethylphenylazo)-6-hydroxy-pyrimidine-2,4-dione (DMPAHPD) form an optical chemical sensor for zinc determination is ascribed. The sensor response is based on selective complexation of Zn 2+ with DMPAHPD in the designed membrane phase, resulting in an ion exchange process between H + in the membrane and Zn 2+ in the sample solution. The influences of several experimental parameters, as membrane composition, pH, and type and concentration of the regenerating reagent, were demonstrated. The sensor has a response range of 5.0 × 10 -9 to 2.5 × 10 -5  M Zn 2+ with detection and quantification limits of 1.6 × 10 -9 and 4.9 × 10 -9  M, respectively. The response time of 1 min at 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution of pH 5.0 with recording repeatability and sensor-to sensor reproducibility is reported. The proposed sensor signifies high selectivity for Zn 2+ over various transition metal ions, alkali, and alkaline earth ions. The sensor membrane can be simply regenerated with 0.5 M HNO 3 . The sensor has been used to assess Zn 2+ in river, waste, tap, sea, well, and spring waters samples, serum of diabetic patients, powdered milk, hair, red meat, pharmaceutical formulations, and talc powder samples., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Field-scale combined ecological treatment systems (FCETS) are designed to remove nutrients from aquaculture wastewater in ponds according to the characteristics of the nutrients present. We designed and established a numerical model based on the system dynamic (SD) method, to optimize the parameters of FCETS. Results showed that the mean removal rates of TSS, TN, NO 3 - -N, NH 4 + -N, TP, DP, and COD Mn ranged from 83.3 to 125.8%, 41.1 to 49.1%, 44.8 to 56.2%, 49.3 to 55.6%, 80.0 to 88.2%, 52.6 to 65.0%, and 52.0 to 61.5%, respectively. The SD model provided satisfactory estimates of water quality at the outlet throughout both the validation and calibration periods. In addition, we conducted a sensitivity analysis to determine the key parameters of the SD model. This also involved optimization of the N and P removal capacity of FCETS, and their corresponding discharge (Q), and concentration (C) at the inlet. This made it possible to use R and MATLAB to simulate seasonal differences in the removal of N and P. Our results indicate that a FCETS can be used to efficiently remove nutrients from rural wastewater in ponds. In addition, we demonstrated that the SD-based numerical model is a useful management support tool to ensure that decisions are made which result in the stable operation of a FCETS. Globally, sea turtles are at high risk of ingesting plastic. However, research on plastic ingestion by sea turtles in East Asia is scant, and no quantitative or qualitative investigation has been conducted in Korean waters. This study examined the plastic ingestion of sea turtles stranded, floating, or incidentally captured in Korean waters between 2012 and 2018. The quantity, shape, color, size, polymer type, and original usage of plastic debris (>1 mm) ingested by sea turtles were analyzed after being sorted from the gastrointestinal tracts of 34 turtles (21 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 9 green turtles (Chelonia mydas), 2 leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea), and 2 olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea)). The ingestion frequencies of greens, loggerheads, olive ridleys, and leatherbacks were 100%, 81%, 50%, and 50%, respectively. The mean amount of plastic ingested was 108 ± 253 mg/kg (38 ± 61 n/ind.). The ingested debris tended to be films and fibers (>80%), light in color (white and transparent; 65%), and light polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, polypropylene [poly (ethylene:propylene)], expanded polystyrene; 93%). The original uses were identified for 187 pieces; single-use plastics (e.g., plastic bag and packaging) and fishing and aquaculture items (e.g., twine and net) were found to dominate. Green turtles (264 ± 433 mg/kg) ingested significantly higher amounts of plastic than loggerheads (72.8 ± 156 mg/kg). Green turtles ingested mostly fibers (51%), such as rope, twine, and net, while loggerheads ingested largely films (61%), such as plastic bags and packaging. Interspecies differences in quantities and shapes of ingested debris may be related to their distinct feeding habits and geographical range of movement. The present study demonstrates that sea turtles foraging in Korean waters are considerably affected by marine plastic debris, and indicates that proper waste management of single-use plastics and fishing gears is urgently needed to mitigate the damage that plastic debris causes to marine wildlife., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
