Nowadays, agricultural practices require special attention due to their important contribution to water pollution, the more so as they are associated with environmental and health impairments. Despite legislation addressing nutrient pollution, there are still high levels of nutrients in water bodies, as evidenced by the results identified in the literature. Among nutrients of environmental concern identified in water and associated with agricultural practices are nitrogen and phosphorus. When applied in excess under fertilizer form, these nutrients accumulate in water bodies with consequences such as eutrophication or human health impairments if water is used for drinking. The purpose of this review paper is to present the current state of nutrient water pollution generated by unsustainable agricultural practices. In addition, are presented the main legislative regulations addressing water quality imposed by the European Union, are described aspects related to nitrogen and phosphorus pollution from agriculture, and levels of nutrients in water bodies from different European countries. Also, effects of agricultural pollution on the environment and humans are discussed, and possible strategies that could be employed to decrease or prevent water pollution are reviewed. Due to its fundamental position in the aquatic food chain linking primary producers (phytoplankton) to higher trophic levels (fish), zooplankton has a crucial influence on the structure and function of lakes. The scientific literature shows that zooplankton is an effective indicator of eutrophication. However, according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, zooplankton is still not included as one of the biological components for assessing the ecological status of lakes. In Poland, the zooplankton-based method (ZIPLAs) has been developed to assess the ecological status of deep stratified lakes. Shallow lakes function differently from deep lakes, and literature data show that the response of zooplankton indices to eutrophication parameters is much weaker than in deep lakes. This paper presents the Zooplankton Index for Shallow Lakes' Assessment (ZISLA), a new method for assessing ecological status based on zooplankton community structure. The ZISLA includes the body size index of Daphnia cucullata (BSI), the percentage share of high trophy-indicating rotifer species (IHTROT), the number of rotifer species (NROT), and the Margalef index (D). The ZISLA shows a strong, significant correlation with total phosphorus and total nitrogen (Spearman's coefficient (R = −0.77, R = −0.74; p < 0.0001) and slightly weaker with Secchi disk visibility (R = 0.72; p < 0.0001). The European Standard EN 16039:2011 provides guidelines for assessing lake hydromorphology within the Water Framework Directive and includes methods for estimating volume, mean depth, and maximum depth based on statistical models applied to data from topographic maps. We tested the predictive accuracy of these models using independently collected bathymetric data from 35 Swedish lakes. The models had no predictive power, and the maximum depth predictions were inversely correlated with the observed values. The mean absolute percent error was 46% for volume and mean depth, and 85% for maximum depth. The models are flawed and should not be used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The design of a representative surface water quality monitoring network is vital for accurately capturing the dynamics of water bodies and variability in pollution across a catchment. The representativeness of a surface water monitoring network refers to how well it reflects the characteristics of all monitored surface water bodies. In this study, using a micro-watershed–based approach, a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool (Surface Water Quality Monitoring Point Locations ANalysis (SWQM_PLAN)) has been developed to optimize the design of surface water quality monitoring networks. In the first stage of the two-stage study, a digital elevation model and minimum watershed area size were taken as input parameters and micro-watersheds with defined upstream–downstream relations were created. In the second stage, input parameters including land use data, pollution sources, and micro-watershed data, along with specific criteria, were used to identify the basins and determine the optimal locations for surface water monitoring stations. The developed GIS tool was then applied to evaluate the existing surface water monitoring network in the Gediz River Basin, designed by the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The tool assessed the effectiveness if the existing monitoring network in terms of assessing agricultural pollution and provided potential revision suggestions to enhance the effectiveness of implemented pollution reduction measures. Water pollution with nitrogen (N) from agriculture constitutes a persisting environmental problem in intensive farming regions worldwide. Understanding the spatio-temporal interconnection between agricultural N emissions and N inputs to water bodies is key to evaluating and improving existing mitigation policies. Nitrogen flux models are an indispensable tool for addressing these complex research questions in the land use–water nexus, requiring adequate data on agricultural N surpluses. However, high-resolution farm management data are not readily available to the scientific community. We develop a municipality-level agricultural N budget model for Germany based on farm-level administration data from the Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS) and regional expert knowledge. We estimate a total agricultural N surplus of 58 kg N ha−1 of utilised agricultural area as the three-year average for 2014–2016. About 90% of municipalities exhibit N surpluses between 21 and 99 kg N ha−1. Evaluation with collected farm accountancy data revealed a good fit of the modelled (with observed) mineral N quantities applied. Our results highlight the potential of farm-level data for N flux models. Due to the ubiquitous reporting of land use and farming structures in the IACS, our approach can be adapted in other countries of the EU to serve as a harmonised backbone of monitoring and policy impact assessments. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires member states to routinely assess the river ecological status using community-based indices. However, there is still a lack of published WFD-compliant methods for the French West Indies, especially using diatom-based indices. Martinique and Guadeloupe exhibit diverse landscapes shaped by their complex geological history and tropical climatic conditions. These strong particularities make the existing indices developed for the European mainland unusable. Based on diatom sampling from to 2013 (607 samples) and through multivariate analyses, we developed the Indice Diatomique des Antilles (IDA). We first identified the key abiotic factors influencing diatom communities on both islands, and then characterized taxon sensitivity by considering their presence probability along a pressure gradient.. The index was based on the presence and relative abundance of these taxa in each sample. The last step consisted of using new data from the 2014–2022 sampling surveys (457 samples) as a validation dataset to verify IDA accuracy. The Marano and Grado Lagoon (Adriatic Sea, Italy) is an important transitional environment that furnishes numerous ecosystem services and is under protection as Site of Community Importance. It suffers from an excess of nutrients, especially nitrate (NO3−), and has been designated as a nitrate vulnerable zone. In this work, sixteen water bodies were seasonally monitored for physicochemical parameters and nutrients, to elucidate the trophic state of the lagoon and to check the occurrence of significant temporal trends in a time series from 2011 to 2021. Steep gradients of spatial and seasonal distribution were observed for all parameters with elevated concentration of N-NO3− (up to 360 µM) in the western sector. The whole lagoon was in phosphorous limitation (P-PO43− mean ± s.d. = 0.15 ± 0.22 µM) with a mean Redfield ratio of 1130. The concentration of nutrients was significantly correlated with the degree of both freshwater inputs and precipitation. The calculation of trophic indices shows that the lagoon is in an oligotrophic to hypertrophic condition (i.e., TRIX 1.9–6.8). The analysis of the temporal series showed that despite some significant trends, the time span considered is too short to detect significant changes in the trophic state of this dynamic environment. The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) is one of the most analyzed environmental legislations in the scientific literature, influencing the water management in some non-European countries. The WFD has the strong ambition of achieving a good ecological status of water bodies across all river basins in Europe. However, the advances towards sustainable management are falling far behind the planned schedule. The emphasis of the Directive is focused on water quality rather than on water quantity. The advances during the last quarter of the century since its inception have been strong on urban and industrial point pollution, but not on agricultural non-point pollution that remains high and even increases in major basins. Water quantity aspects have been mostly left aside in the Directive, despite the fact that water scarcity is a serious problem in Southern European countries, and will become more critical with climate change in most basins across Europe. Some policy measures of the WFD need to be reformed, in particular measures for abating agricultural pollution, and new measures for addressing water scarcity. The narrow focus of the WFD on water pricing to solve at the same time issues of financing, water allocation and efficiency, environment, opportunity costs and pollution abatement, should be broadened. The challenge is giving more emphasis to command & control and collective action instruments, and designing combinations of instruments adapted to sectoral and spatial locations in basins. This overhaul of the water policy instruments by the European Commission will be needed to advance in the sustainable management of river basins in Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an increasing need for legislation worldwide to monitor and assess the ecological status of marine ecosystems, due to increasing pressures from human activities. The costs and time of traditional analyses are high, while methods based on molecular analysis could reduce these costs and shorten evaluation times significantly. Some biotic indices used to assess the status need reference conditions to be applied. Hence, our objective here is to develop reference conditions for a molecular-based benthic index (M−gAMBI), which can be compared with a morphological one (M−AMBI). Using 6 years of data from estuaries and coasts, we have been able to set reference conditions for five water types, including richness, diversity and AMBI. However, one problem is the absence of the whole human pressure gradient in all water types, making difficult to validate the reference conditions. Based on the results of this research, the M−gAMBI index could be considered suitable for ecological status assessment since it meets most of the criteria for considering a genomics-based index suitable. However, it is considered necessary to advance in (i) improving the detection of errors in genomic methods and similarity with morphological methods, and (ii) an intercalibration exercise, allowing adjusting quality class boundaries and determining the ecological status in an equivalent manner using both methods.

The impact of low flows on riverine ecology in Sweden is not fully understood. Recent summer droughts, along with their regionally projected increase, together demonstrate the need for a more solid foundation guiding ecologically responsible planning. Impact assessments can be made via indicator species sensitive to low flow, if their response to the flow conditions can be clearly understood, using for example historical data on species abundance and flow. In Swedish rivers, there are extensive electrofishing data with a special focus on salmonids, predominantly brown trout Salmo trutta, which are previously reported to be sensitive to low flow. There are also available national data on river flows, largely based on simulations. We processed and used these data sets, along with information on additional environmental factors. We tested if sites had less than their median trout abundance during the year of the minimum winter or summer low-flow. Adverse impacts of low flow could be shown only for young-of-the-year trout. The impact was small with at most 57 % of remaining sites having lower than median trout abundance (compared to 44 % overall) during the year of the lowest winter flow. The insubstantial effect means that using trout as a low-flow indicator species in Sweden cannot be supported by the currently available data. We believe the main causes of the small effects are limitations in the time resolution of trout data and spatial resolution of the flow data, followed by the ability of trout to escape low flows by seeking deeper habitats.

Abstract Background Long-term biomonitoring of macroinvertebrates is a popular and valuable approach for assessing the status of freshwater ecosystems, identifying the impact of stressors, and evaluating ecosystem health. Although macroinvertebrate-based biomonitoring can be effective in detecting changes in distribution patterns and community trends over time, crayfish often remain undetected or unreported by biomonitoring efforts despite their importance in maintaining the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Results By analyzing a comprehensive database of long-term macroinvertebrate time series, we found that most sampling methods and assessment schemes can detect both native and non-native crayfish in running waters if sites are continuously sampled. However, native crayfish were detected to a lesser extent and by fewer methods. Kick-net sampling and assessment techniques prevailed as the most efficient methods for capturing crayfish. However, the substantial number of time series lacking crayfish data calls into question whether these methods are sufficiently comprehensive to encapsulate crayfish populations accurately. The use of other targeted methods such as baited traps or hand catching may provide a more reliable estimate of their presence. Conclusions Given the detrimental impacts of non-native crayfish and the decline in native crayfish populations, we strongly recommend that stakeholders and managers incorporate a combination of these approaches into their monitoring efforts. The use of different taxonomic levels (family vs. genus vs. species level) in estimating biological indices and biomonitoring tools can cause delays in identifying new non-native specie’s occurrences, hindering effective water quality assessment and ecosystem management by governments and stakeholders. Therefore, whenever possible, we call for standardized taxonomic levels for biomonitoring studies and management strategies to accurately address these issues and make recommendations going forward.

For surface water bodies, the main environmental objectives set out in the Water Framework Directive are aimed at achieving the good ecological status, respectively the good potential for heavily modified and artificial water bodies. The Banat River Basin Management Plan 2016-2021 identified several significant pressures at watercourses level, such as Bega Veche, which lead to the failure to achieve these objectives. This paper presents the proposed green measures which have a beneficial role from a biological and ecological point of view, which involve natural water retention measures and renaturation of water streams banks, including measures to improve the retention capacity at catchment level.

Multimetric indices play a pivotal role in assessing river ecological quality, aligning with the European Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) requirements. However, indices developed specifically for large rivers are uncommon. Our objective was to develop a fish-based tool specifically tailored to assess the ecological quality in Portuguese large rivers. Data were collected from seven sites in each of three Portuguese large rivers (Minho, Guadiana, and Tagus). Each site was classified using an environmental disturbance score, combining different pressure types, such as water chemistry, land use, and hydromorphological alterations. The Fish-based Multimetric Index for Portuguese Large Rivers (F-MMIP-LR) comprises four metrics: % native lithophilic individuals; % alien individuals; % migrant individuals; and % freshwater native individuals, representing compositional, reproductive, and migratory guilds. The index showed good performance in separating least- and most-disturbed sites. Least-disturbed sites were rated 'high' or 'good' by F-MMIP-LR, contrasting with no such classification for most-disturbed sites, highlighting index robustness. The three rivers presented a wide range of F-MMIP-LR values across the gradient of 'bad' to 'high', indicating that, on a large spatial extent, the biological condition was substantially altered. The F-MMIP-LR provides vital information for managers and decision-makers, guiding restoration efforts and strengthening conservation initiatives in line with the WFD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The EU Green Deal has direct and indirect impact on EU environmental law. We examine the future of EU regulatory activity on waters in this era from the viewpoint of industrial water pollution. We simultaneously explore the feasibility of Gunningham’s classic categorization of environmental law, regulation, and governance in the novel reality created by Green Deal and Nature Restoration Law (NRL). In the EU, the relations between the regulation (Water Framework Directive, WFD) and law (Industrial Emissions Directive) (IED) layers have been particularly tense. Although the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has attempted to clarify the situation, significant diversity remains at the Member States level, as our account from two Member States, Finland and Germany, illustrate. Though the EU has opted for and continues to embrace integrated and holistic water management integrated water resources management (IWRM), it would also be possible to adopt other regulatory strategies. An example of this, and of collaborative governance, is China, where the River Chief System (RCS) has moved on from IWRM. The EU’s chosen path seems, however, to lie elsewhere, as our function analysis of the proposed NRL shows. Through the NRL, the EU regulator declares to ‘fill the gaps’ of the WFD. This new reality of EU ‘aquatic biodiversity governance’ seems to create another layer in the traditional categorization of environmental law and governance, where all pre-existing EU environmental law is harnessed to combat (aquatic) biodiversity loss. By using spatial data, it is possible to synthesize the hydrometeorological effects in the medium and long term on water storage volume. Given the importance of the Douro River for hydroelectric power generation in Portugal, it is crucial to ensure that adaptation strategies align with international agreements that provide guidelines for managing transboundary water resources. This article outlines the progress and challenges faced by the European Union's Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) in aligning their water management practices with EU and international standards, such as the EU Water Framework Directive, the United Nations Water Convention and the Sustainable Development Goals. Key components include integrated water management between different water users, economic instruments for resource management, financing strategies for the sector, participatory planning at river basin level, comprehensive water monitoring including ecological parameters, water data sharing and enhanced cross-border cooperation on shared waters. Following the adoption of the Water Convention in Helsinki in 1992 and the Water Framework Directive in 2000, states located within a transboundary river basin were invited to set up basin organizations. The International Meuse Commission (IMC) was set up in 2002, under an agreement between France, Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Over the last 20 years, the IMC has been a forum for exchange, coordination and cooperation between the riparian countries, leading to improvements in the water quality of the Meuse, reduction of obstacles for migratory fish, and establishment of cross-border systems to prevent accidental pollution and flooding. The deterioration of superficial water quality is a significant concern in water management. Currently, most European rivers do not achieve qualitative standards defined by Directive 2000/60/EC (Water Framework Directive, WFD), while the health status of many surface water bodies remains unknown. Within this context, we propose a new methodology to perform a semi-quantitative analysis of the pressure state of a river, starting from easily accessible data related to anthropic activities. The proposed approach aims to address the endemic scarcity of monitoring records. This study proposes a procedure to (i) evaluate the relative pressure of different human activities, (ii) identify allocation points of different pollutant sources along the river using a raster-based approach, and (iii) determine a spatial biochemical water quality index. The developed index expresses the overall biochemical state of surface water induced by pollutant sources that may simultaneously impact a single river segment. This includes establishments under the so-called Seveso Directive, activities subjected to the IPPC-IED discipline, wastewater treatment plants, and contaminated sites. The methodology has been tested over three rivers in Northern Italy, each exposed to different industrial and anthropogenic pressures: Reno, Enza, and Parma. A comparison with monitored data yielded convincing results, proving the consistency of the proposed index in reproducing the spatial variability of the river water quality. While additional investigations are necessary, the developed methodology can serve as a valuable tool to support decision-making processes and predictive studies in areas lacking or having limited water quality monitoring data. The European Union Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC; WFD) aims to achieve a good ecological and chemical status of all bodies of surface water by 2027. The development of integrated guidance on surface water chemical monitoring (e.g., WFD Guidance Document No. 7/19) has been transferred into national German law (Ordinance for the Protection of Surface Waters, OGewV). For the majority of compounds, this act requires monthly sampling to assess the chemical quality status of a body of surface water. To evaluate the representativeness of the sampling strategy under the OGewV, high-frequency online monitoring data are investigated under different sampling scenarios and compared with current, monthly grab sampling data. About 23 million data points were analyzed for this study. Three chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, nitrate-nitrogen, and chloride concentration) and discharge data were selected from four catchments of different sizes, ranging from 51,391 km2 to 84 km2 (Elbe, Vereinigte Mulde, Neiße and two stations at Lockwitzbach). In this paper, we propose short-term online-monitoring (STOM) as a sampling alternative. STOM considers the placement of online sensors over a limited duration and return interval. In general, we: (I) compare the results of conventional grab sampling with STOM, (II) investigate the different performance of STOM and grab sampling using discharge data as a proxy for analyzing event-mobilized pollutants, and (III) investigate the related uncertainties and costs of both sampling methods. Results show that STOM outperforms grab sampling for parameters where minimum/maximum concentrations are required by law, as the probability of catching a single extreme value is higher with STOM. Furthermore, parameters showing a pronounced diurnal pattern, such as dissolved oxygen, are also captured considerably better. The performance of STOM showed no substantial improvements for parameters with small concentration variability, such as nitrogen-nitrate or chloride. The analysis of discharge events as a proxy parameter for event-mobilized pollutants proves that the probability of capturing samples during events is significantly increased by STOM. Objectives: This article briefly analyzes the 1998 Albufeira Convention –on cooperation for the protection of the Spanish-Portuguese basins –as well as the functioning of these cooperation bodies created to apply the Convention: analyze the more than 22 years of their effective operation and assess whether they have managed (or not) to adapt the AC to climate change, respecting the ecological flow required by the Water Framework Directive. Methodology: In this work, a review of all relevant legislation is carried out, at national (Spanish and Portuguese), international and EU level, especially previous works carried out by the author and other relevant documents Results: As a consequence of the centralization of «cooperation MadridLisbon» and the lack of real public participation, the water demands of some Autonomous Communities and local communities are not being properly discussed, which makes cooperation difficult, raises some tensions and makes adaptation to the climate change of the Albufeira Convention difficult. Conclusions: The lack of authentic multilevel governance and public participation are two key aspects that should be promoted to boost Portuguese-Spanish cooperation in water matters, as well as to face the challenges of the climate change. In both Sweden and Finland, water law has traditionally provided strong protection for hydropower operations by issuing permanent environmental licences. This national protection has started to erode as a result of the requirement of the European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD) for permit reviews to improve the ecological status of rivers. In the light of this dynamic between European and national frameworks, this article compares the Swedish and Finnish implementation of the WFD regarding existing hydropower operations. Whereas Sweden has adopted comprehensive legislative and policy reforms that embrace a systemic perspective on reconciling hydropower with the current societal and ecological circumstances, Finland has relied on bottom-up collaborative processes at the grassroots level. The article shows that both approaches are problematic in so far as they push the boundaries of proper implementation of the WFD and, by extension, the achievement of the ecological objectives of the WFD in waters affected by hydropower. Our comparison highlights tensions between EU law requirements for formal legal effectiveness in national implementation, and the WFD's aspirations for adaptive river basin-based governance. Traditionally, the planning, investment, management, and evaluation of combined sewer networks has been the domain of hydraulic modelling using narrowly defined indicators associated with spill frequencies, flows and waterbody environmental quality standards. Due to concerns about the increasing frequency and impact of combined sewer overflow (CSO) ‘spill’ events, many cities and citizens are realising or reassessing the problems that accompany these systems, and considering alternatives including nature-based solutions (NBS). We report on an investigation of the impacts of urban stormwater management and CSOs, addressing key issues of framing, assessment and measures of success. With increasing interest being directed towards NBS for urban water management, we asked the questions: Which additional or alternative measures of success might be applied to judge the success or otherwise of different approaches? What outcomes are viewed as beneficial or problematic, what benefits should be optimised and what adverse impacts should be designed out? Reflecting on recent impact assessment guidance and drawing on research in a city with a globally leading reputation for innovation and ecological sustainability practices (Berlin), we explore how the conceptual, practical and methodological frameworks might evolve over time. Factors affecting investments in stormwater management, whether involving conventional hard infrastructure or using NBS, go well beyond simple measures of flow, storage, volume and frequency. Public notions of value and legitimacy in urban water management are changing fast. We conclude with recommendations as to how city stakeholders may together develop more comprehensive assessments of combined sewer impacts and stormwater management practices.

This paper presents the Zooplankton Index for Shallow Lakes’ Assessment (ZISLA), a new method for assessing ecological status based on zooplankton community structure. The ZISLA includes the body size index of Daphnia cucullata (BSI), the percentage share of high trophy-indicating rotifer species (IHTROT), the number of rotifer species (NROT), and the Margalef index (D). The ZISLA shows a strong, significant correlation with total phosphorus and total nitrogen (Spearman’s coefficient (R = −0.77, R = −0.74; p < 0.0001) and slightly weaker with Secchi disk visibility (R = 0.72; p < 0.0001). The ZISLA index shows a statistically significant good/moderate distinction for all water quality parameters.

The European Fish Index EFI+ is the only fish-based multimetric index for the assessment of the ecological status of running waters that is validated and thus applicable across most countries of the European Union. Metrics of the index rely on several attributes of the species present in the fish assemblage, irrespective of their native/alien status. The abundance of alien fish, together with other anthropogenic impacts, is one of the most important threats to the conservation of native fish and ecosystem health and is also an indicator of degraded stream conditions. Therefore, to improve the performance of the EFI+ in regions with high incidence of alien species, the EFI+ was adapted to include alien fish pressure as a new metric that reflects the number of alien species as well as the proportional abundance of alien individuals. The application of the adapted index (A-EFI+) is illustrated with data from several Iberian Mediterranean basins and showed similar or stronger correlations than the original EFI+ with anthropogenic pressure (land-use variables and alterations in hydrology and river morphology) and with other regional fish indices. EFI+ has been invaluable to intercalibrate fish indices across Europe, and A-EFI+ is similar but explicitly includes alien pressure, thus helping to provide a more comprehensive assessment of ecosystem health and to communicate it to society. The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) is one of the most studied environmental legislations and recently turned twenty. The paper deals with a literature search and analysis of 4120 references related to this Directive. After a period of strong increase in article production (2002–2012) WFD scientific productivity is currently still high (~ 260 papers year−1), suggesting a persistent interest of the scientific community on this issue. Most research supporting the WFD was on water sciences, but contributions were also from governance and socio-economic disciplines. Studies on biological quality elements and rivers were prominent. The WFD implementation has seen a strong participation of scientists from all EU countries, and partially also from outside-EU nations. To improve the EU water policy and management, the paper suggests a greater interconnection between WFD and other EU Directives and indicates some emerging environmental issues to which the Directive should address. Despite numerous published literature on the impacts of agriculture on water quality, knowledge gaps persist regarding which farming systems are of most concern for their impact on water quality, which would allow water resource planners to better target water management efforts. Seeking to understand how these relationships vary across different farming systems, we used data on water quality status in watersheds of an agricultural region in southern Portugal and overlaid it with a map of farming systems for the same region provided by a previous study. By intersecting both data layers, we characterized the areal shares of the farming systems in each watershed and inspected how these shares relate to water quality status using logistic regression. The results show that the impact of agriculture on water quality is primarily related to specific farming systems. We believe this type of information can be of significant interest to agricultural planners and policymakers interested in meeting water quality standards, and we conclude this study by suggesting innovative policy options based on payments to farmers operating selected farming systems as a cost-effective way to reconcile agricultural and environmental policy objectives. The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a comprehensive initiative guiding river basin water management, addressing pressures such as pollution from diffuse and point sources, and hydromorphological alterations. However, pressures that can deteriorate the ecological quality of water bodies through biotic changes (i.e., by the introduction of non-indigenous species) are not rigorously addressed by the WFD. This study explores associations between conventional ecological quality indices based on physicochemical and biotic quality elements (fish and macroinvertebrates) against the presence and densities of non-indigenous freshwater fish species (NIFS) in lotic ecosystems of Greece, aiming to unravel the potential usage of NIFS in future ecological assessments. The dataset comprises 277 samplings at 115 sites, covering physicochemical and biotic (fish and macroinvertebrate) quality indices, and anthropogenic pressure variables. Based on our findings, the occurrence and densities of four NIFS (Lepomis gibbosus, Pseudorasbora parva, Gambusia holbrooki, and Carassius gibelio) were highly associated with the ecological quality assessments of the applied indices. Higher occurrences and densities of these NIFS were related to samplings of lower ecological quality. In addition, NIFS exhibited a positive association with anthropogenic pressures, likely due to their adaptability to less optimal environmental conditions or higher tolerance to pollution and other stressors. Our findings underscore the need for a paradigm shift in ecological quality assessments, emphasizing the use of NIFS either as a potential indicator of ecosystem health or as a pressure that deteriorates ecological quality. Water quality has deteriorated considerably because of urban runoff, agricultural production, and rapid industrialization. This prosecution's objective is to assess the surface water's quality in the Gjakova location. In general, surface water quality complies with the Water Framework Directive's principles. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, three distinct sampling sites--the Lumbardh River, the Derivative Channel, and the Radoniqi Lake--were used to examine the surface water intended for consumption. According to principal corresponding analysis (PCA), there was a positive association between various physicochemical parameters and total and fecal coliforms. Based on the water quality index for each sampling site and the analyzed surface water parameters, surface water belongs to the medium category. In comparison to the Waste framework directive, most parameters fall into the first category, excluding nitrites, phosphates, and manganese. However, the water treatment for drinking should be related to parameters that exceed the upper limits. Seasonal monitoring of water quality is an effective tool to evaluate treatment processes. Abstract Background Climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure are two of the major drivers of increasing extreme events like droughts and floods. To deal with the increasing number of flooding events hitting Europe in the last few decades, around twenty years ago the European Commission started to develop ad-hoc legislation to reduce flood risk by mapping flood hazard and risk areas, such as the Directive 2007/60/EC on the Assessment and Management of Flood Risk. This Directive looks to identify regions where flood management strategies should be prioritized. Despite this holistic approach, flaws connected to the consideration of sediment transport and morphological changes in rivers exist, leading to potential underestimations of the impact of floods affecting active watercourses or areas subjected to frequent morphological changes. Results By discussing six examples related to European lowland and mountain watercourses affected by significant floods in the last 20 years, the present mini-review aims to provide additional evidence on the need for a rethinking of flood risk mapping, moving from a “clear water” perspective to a more integrated approach, where the interactions between all the fluvial components (water, sediment, biota, and humans) are adequately considered. Conclusions The examples reported here show the importance of considering sediment and wood in flood risk management, suggesting the need for integrating flood-related studies with other disciplines like geomorphology and ecohydrology.

Water pollution with nitrogen (N) from agriculture constitutes a persisting environmental problem in intensive farming regions worldwide. Understanding the spatio-temporal interconnection between agricultural N emissions and N inputs to water bodies is key to evaluating and improving existing mitigation policies. Nitrogen flux models are an indispensable tool for addressing these complex research questions in the land use–water nexus, requiring adequate data on agricultural N surpluses. However, high-resolution farm management data are not readily available to the scientific community. We develop a municipality-level agricultural N budget model for Germany based on farm-level administration data from the Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS) and regional expert knowledge. We estimate a total agricultural N surplus of 58 kg N ha−1 of utilised agricultural area as the three-year average for 2014–2016. About 90% of municipalities exhibit N surpluses between 21 and 99 kg N ha−1. Evaluation with collected farm accountancy data revealed a good fit of the modelled (with observed) mineral N quantities applied. Our results highlight the potential of farm-level data for N flux models. Due to the ubiquitous reporting of land use and farming structures in the IACS, our approach can be adapted in other countries of the EU to serve as a harmonised backbone of monitoring and policy impact assessments.

The poor conditions of rivers worldwide make restoration an issue of great importance and urgency. The acceptance of restoration by society is crucial, however, the factors determining such acceptance are still poorly understood. In particular, the understanding of the complex interplay between the acceptance or rejection of specific project components and the acceptance of the overall project require further exploration. To address this research gap, we analyze a restoration project in Bad Bergzabern, Germany to (1) investigate the acceptance of the overall project and its components, and (2) explore why people accept or reject specific components. Three hundred and twenty-one in-person interviews were conducted and the factors of acceptance were analyzed using logistic regression. Our findings show that while acceptance of the overall project is generally high, many respondents reject one or more project components. Complementary social project components, like a playground, find less support than purely ecological components. Overall, our research shows that differences in the acceptance of components depend on individual concerns, the quality of communication, attachment to the site, and age. Our results contribute to a better understanding of preferences for river restoration projects and help water managers design restoration projects that are highly accepted by society. HIGHLIGHTS To increase the acceptance of WFD objectives and thus accelerate implementation, public concerns need to be taken seriously.; Social project components add value for the population, but also lead to new concerns that can jeopardize the acceptance of river restoration projects.; Cost and flood concerns are partly based on wrong assumptions and needlessly lower the acceptance of river restoration projects.;

In late 2000, the European Union adopted the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and funded a series of research and innovation projects to support its implementation. One of these was the MULINO project (MULti-sectoral, INtegrated and Operational Decision Support System for Sustainable Use of Water Resources at the Catchment Scale). Its main product was a decision support system (mDSS) tool designed to help water managers make choices related to WFD implementation in a participatory manner. After the end of MULINO, a long sequence of research projects allowed for the maintenance and continuous development of its tool, which has been applied for more than 20 years in various contexts related to environmental and integrated management. This experience and an analysis of the literature allow us to draw some general conclusions regarding DSS tools for water management and their role in our societies. Lessons learned are proposed, from the need to frame tools within sound methodological frameworks for the management of decision processes, supporting instead of substituting decision-makers in their roles, to the trade-offs that appear between ease of use and specificity on one side and flexibility and reusability on the other. The specific strengths attributed to mDSS include the provision of an interface based on a simplified and understandable conceptual framework that facilitates communication with interested parties, the flexibility and ability to approach a wide variety of decisional issues, the relatively simple and understandable decision rules provided by the tool, and the simplified connections with other software environments. This paper presents the current version of the software and reports on the experience of its development and use over more than two decades; it also identifies the way forward.

Study region: Europe, with focus on Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Finland, Poland, and Ukraine. Study focus: The Water Framework Directive (WFD) aims to obtain harmonised holistic Europe-wide water management based on an integrated river basin management model. This study analyses the efficiency of national groundwater monitoring programmes in meeting cross-border demands for harmonised data in IRBDs. Emphasis is placed on the core parameters, oxygen content, pH, conductivity, nitrate, and ammonium, specified by the WFD to be monitored in surveillance monitoring programmes. The findings offer recommendations for national water authorities on infirmities in groundwater management and how they could improve data transparency and availability for enhanced long-term management of shared resources. New hydrological insights for the region: A questionnaire distributed to nine European countries indicates large national differences in the extent of groundwater monitoring. This study highlights several key recommendations for moving forward with transborder groundwater management. Firstly, it is imperative that all nations adhere to ISO standards for field practices and analysis. Secondly, transborder collaborative projects to harmonise e.g., design of monitoring programmes, sampling, and analysis and cooperation on data analysis must be established. Lastly, there is a need to enhance the accessibility of groundwater data and associated metadata. The achievement of the WFD objectives encounters obstacles, due to weak transborder integration and the effects related to administrative boundaries.

In the context of the requirements of the Water Framework Directive to reinstate a river's good ecological status after being severely altered by human pressures, river restoration became a major topic in the last decade in the EU and the number of projects implemented especially on hydromorphology increased. However, it is still uncertain whether these restoration measures have positive cumulative effects, i.e. hydromorphological effectiveness, when compared to reference conditions and expectations of stakeholders, because of inconsistent methodologies. Therefore, the goal of our project is to develop a methodology to evaluate the hydromorphological effectiveness of river restoration, based on standardised indicators, at various spatial scales, appropriate for implemented measures and for restored river types, weighting the expectations of actors and adapted to case studies in Romania. This methodological protocol could become also a useful tool to create a strategy and make decisions in the practice of river restoration. Eutrophication impairs lake ecosystems at a global scale. In this context, as benthic microalgae are well-established warnings for a large range of stressors, particularly nutrient enrichment, the Water Framework Directive required the development of diatom-based methods to monitor lake eutrophication. Here, we present the diatom-based index we developed for French lakes, named IBDL (Indice Biologique Diatomées en Lacs). Data were collected in 93 lakes from 2015 to 2020. A challenge arose from the discontinuous pressure gradient of our dataset, especially the low number of nutrient-impacted lakes. To analyze the data we opted for the so-called "Threshold Indicator Taxa ANalysis" method, which makes it possible to determine a list of "alert taxa." We obtained a multimetric index based on specific pressure gradients (Kjeldahl nitrogen, suspended matter, biological oxygen demand, and total phosphorous). Considering the European intercalibration process, the very good correlation between IBDL and the common metric (R2 from 0.52 to 0.87 according to the lake alkalinity type) makes us very confident in our ability to match future IBDL quality thresholds with European standards. The IBDL proved at last to be particularly relevant as it has a twofold interest: an excellent relationship with total phosphorus (R2 from 0.63 to 0.83 according to the lake alkalinity type) and a possible application to any lake metatype. Its complementarity with macrophyte-based indices moreover justifies the use of at least two primary producer components for lake ecological status classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stream geodiversity is a novel concept that is used to describe the variety of geological, geomorphological and hydrological features at a reach‐scale level. In this study, we investigated the relationship between geodiversity and ecological indicators based on fishes, benthic macroinvertebrates and diatoms used for the ecological classification of rivers in line with the Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC. We examined whether geodiversity can be used as a proxy indicator of ecological quality, and we further tested if geodiversity can explain a significant amount of taxa richness variation. We hypothesized that undisturbed or minimally disturbed rivers will be more hydrologically and geomorphologically diverse, and as such, the ecological quality of streams will improve with geodiversity. We also attempted to quantify the probability of achieving 'good' ecological quality in relation to geodiversity levels through ordinal regression analysis. Although we did not find a significant relationship between geodiversity and taxonomic richness for any of the three freshwater groups, our results showed positive effects of geodiversity on all three ecological indicators. We also found that the likelihood of achieving the WFD target increases significantly with higher geodiversity. Our findings indicate that geodiversity can potentially serve as a proxy of ecological quality and highlight the need to consider the inclusion of geodiversity measures in ecological quality assessment systems. Abstract Background For more than 20 years, restoration measures have been conducted on watercourses in Germany to increase habitat diversity and thus promote biodiversity. However, their ecological efficacy often proved to be limited. While some studies report an increase in species diversity, others show little evidence of improvement even many years after the implementation of restoration measures. In general, ecological efficacy of hydromorphological restoration measures is highest for terrestrial and semiaquatic groups of organisms such as floodplain vegetation and ground beetles. According to the literature, macrophytes responded most strongly to in-stream restoration measures, while fish stocks showed little improvement and macroinvertebrates showed little or no effect in terms of species richness and diversity. These findings raise the question of reasons for the low ecological efficacy of hydromorphological restoration measures, especially for macroinvertebrate communities. The following literature review and a case study for the river Horloff will provide possible indications for failing success of intensive restoration measures. Results One reason for the inadequate ecological status of many restored river stretches is the inappropriate scaling of restoration measures. Often, small-scale restoration measures are planned, although the respective water bodies exhibit stressors at the catchment scale that impair the ecological efficacy of restoration measures. In particular, chemical contamination of running waters is often insufficiently addressed in the planning and implementation of restoration measures and hampers efficacy of hydromorphological restoration measures. For a holistic water resource management, the planning and implementation of measures should therefore be more closely coordinated and harmonized between federal states and neighboring countries. For this purpose, the establishment of so-called river basin communities is suitable, as they already exist today on the rivers Rhine, Danube, Meuse, Weser, Elbe, Ems, Eider, Schlei/Trave, Warnow/Peene. Conclusion The literature review indicated that for a successful recolonization of restored river stretches by macroinvertebrates and the enhancement of the ecological status, large-scale stressors, i.e., stressors acting at the catchment scale, should be eliminated initially by restoration measures focusing on the chemical contamination and the surrounding land use. Structural restoration measures acting on the reach or local scale should ideally be implemented contemporarily to the removal of large-scale stressors like chemical contamination.

Multimetric indices play a pivotal role in assessing river ecological quality, aligning with the European Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) requirements. However, indices developed specifically for large rivers are uncommon. Our objective was to develop a fish-based tool specifically tailored to assess the ecological quality in Portuguese large rivers. Data were collected from seven sites in each of three Portuguese large rivers (Minho, Guadiana, and Tagus). Each site was classified using an environmental disturbance score, combining different pressure types, such as water chemistry, land use, and hydromorphological alterations. The Fish-based Multimetric Index for Portuguese Large Rivers (F-MMIP-LR) comprises four metrics: % native lithophilic individuals; % alien individuals; % migrant individuals; and % freshwater native individuals, representing compositional, reproductive, and migratory guilds. The index showed good performance in separating least- and most-disturbed sites. Least-disturbed sites were rated ‘high’ or ‘good’ by F-MMIP-LR, contrasting with no such classification for most-disturbed sites, highlighting index robustness. The three rivers presented a wide range of F-MMIP-LR values across the gradient of ‘bad’ to ‘high’, indicating that, on a large spatial extent, the biological condition was substantially altered. The F-MMIP-LR provides vital information for managers and decision-makers, guiding restoration efforts and strengthening conservation initiatives in line with the WFD.

The European Union Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC; WFD) aims to achieve a good ecological and chemical status of all bodies of surface water by 2027. The development of integrated guidance on surface water chemical monitoring (e.g., WFD Guidance Document No. 7/19) has been transferred into national German law (Ordinance for the Protection of Surface Waters, OGewV). For the majority of compounds, this act requires monthly sampling to assess the chemical quality status of a body of surface water. To evaluate the representativeness of the sampling strategy under the OGewV, high-frequency online monitoring data are investigated under different sampling scenarios and compared with current, monthly grab sampling data. About 23 million data points were analyzed for this study. Three chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, nitrate-nitrogen, and chloride concentration) and discharge data were selected from four catchments of different sizes, ranging from 51,391 km2 to 84 km2 (Elbe, Vereinigte Mulde, Neiße and two stations at Lockwitzbach). In this paper, we propose short-term online-monitoring (STOM) as a sampling alternative. STOM considers the placement of online sensors over a limited duration and return interval. In general, we: (I) compare the results of conventional grab sampling with STOM, (II) investigate the different performance of STOM and grab sampling using discharge data as a proxy for analyzing event-mobilized pollutants, and (III) investigate the related uncertainties and costs of both sampling methods. Results show that STOM outperforms grab sampling for parameters where minimum/maximum concentrations are required by law, as the probability of catching a single extreme value is higher with STOM. Furthermore, parameters showing a pronounced diurnal pattern, such as dissolved oxygen, are also captured considerably better. The performance of STOM showed no substantial improvements for parameters with small concentration variability, such as nitrogen-nitrate or chloride. The analysis of discharge events as a proxy parameter for event-mobilized pollutants proves that the probability of capturing samples during events is significantly increased by STOM.
