In connection with recent experiments on excitation in which Mott insulators change to conductors, we study the properties of excited states beyond the Mott gap as quasi-stationary states for a two-dimensional Hubbard (t-t'-U) model at half filling. A variational Monte Carlo method is used with trial wave functions for paramagnetic or normal (PM), superconducting with dx2-y2-wave (d-SC), isotropic s-wave, and extended s-wave symmetries, and antiferromagnetic (AF) states. The excited states are generated by imposing a minimum number of doubly occupied sites (doublons) D_L on the lowest-energy states. For U>W (W: band width), d_L=D_L/Ns (Ns: number of sites) corresponds to the excitation intensity. It is found that the AF state is the most stable among the states we treated for d_L<0.14 and insulating. The PM and d-SC states become conductive over a threshold d_Lc, and the conduction is caused by unbound doublons and holons (empty sites). The PM state arises for d_L>0.14, but the d-SC state is always hidden by the AF state. The s-wave-type superconducting states are not stabilized for any parameter set., Comment: 11 pages, 19 figures. Spin and charge fluctuations at vicinity of metal-to-Mott insulator transitions are studied in an organic solid with molecular dimers. The extended Hubbard model taking account of the internal electronic degree of freedom in a molecular dimer is analyzed using the variational Monte Carlo method. Three kinds of the electronic phases, i.e. a metallic phase, an antiferromagnetic insulating phase and a polar charge ordered phase, compete with each other in the ground state. It is found that the polar-charge fluctuation is dominant in a wide range of the molecular dimerization and Coulomb interaction amplitudes, and is enhanced remarkably near the metal-insulator phase boundary, in which the spin fluctuation is almost unchanged. Excitonic insulating system is studied from the viewpoints of the orbital physics in strongly correlated electron systems. An effective model Hamiltonian for low-energy electronic states is derived from the two-orbital Hubbard model with a finite energy difference corresponding to the crystalline field splitting. The effective model is represented by the spin operators and the pseudo-spin operators for the spin-state degrees of freedom. The ground state phase diagram is analyzed by the mean-field approximation. In addition to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases, two kinds of the excitonic insulating phases emerge as a consequence of the competition between the crystalline field effect and the Hund coupling. The excitonic transition is classified to be an Ising-like transition reflecting a spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry. Magnetic structures in the two excitonic insulating phases are different from each other; an antiferromagnetic order and a spin nematic order. Collective excitations in each phase are examined by using the generalized spin-wave method. The Goldstone modes in the excitonic insulating phases appear in the dynamical correlation functions for the spins and pseudo-spin operators. Both the transverse and longitudinal spin excitation modes are active in the two excitonic insulating phases in contrast to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases. We propose an indicator to measure the degree to which a particular news article is novel, as well as an indicator to measure the degree to which a particular news item attracts attention from investors. The novelty measure is obtained by comparing the extent to which a particular news article is similar to earlier news articles, and an article is regarded as novel if there was no similar article before it. On the other hand, we say a news item receives a lot of attention and thus is highly topical if it is simultaneously reported by many news agencies and read by many investors who receive news from those agencies. The topicality measure for a news item is obtained by counting the number of news articles whose content is similar to an original news article but which are delivered by other news agencies. To check the performance of the indicators, we empirically examine how these indicators are correlated with intraday financial market indicators such as the number of transactions and price volatility. Specifically, we use a dataset consisting of over 90 million business news articles reported in English and a dataset consisting of minute-by-minute stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ Stock Market from 2003 to 2014, and show that stock prices and transaction volumes exhibited a significant response to a news article when it is novel and topical., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Buyer--seller relationships among firms can be regarded as a longitudinal network in which the connectivity pattern evolves as each firm receives productivity shocks. Based on a data set describing the evolution of buyer--seller links among 55,608 firms over a decade and structural equation modeling, we find some evidence that interfirm networks evolve reflecting a firm's local decisions to mitigate adverse effects from neighbor firms through interfirm linkage, while enjoying positive effects from them. As a result, link renewal tends to have a positive impact on the growth rates of firms. We also investigate the role of networks in aggregate fluctuations.

We investigate the structure of global inter-firm linkages using a dataset that contains information on business partners for about 400,000 firms worldwide, including all the firms listed on the major stock exchanges. Among the firms, we examine three networks, which are based on customer-supplier, licensee-licensor, and strategic alliance relationships. First, we show that these networks all have scale-free topology and that the degree distribution for each follows a power law with an exponent of 1.5. The shortest path length is around six for all three networks. Second, we show through community structure analysis that the firms comprise a community with those firms that belong to the same industry but different home countries, indicating the globalization of firms' production activities. Finally, we discuss what such production globalization implies for the proliferation of conflict minerals (i.e., minerals extracted from conflict zones and sold to firms in other countries to perpetuate fighting) through global buyer-supplier linkages. We show that a limited number of firms belonging to some specific industries and countries plays an important role in the global proliferation of conflict minerals. Understanding the mutual relationships between information flows and social activity in society today is one of the cornerstones of the social sciences. In financial economics, the key issue in this regard is understanding and quantifying how news of all possible types (geopolitical, environmental, social, financial, economic, etc.) affect trading and the pricing of firms in organized stock markets. In this article, we seek to address this issue by performing an analysis of more than 24 million news records provided by Thompson Reuters and of their relationship with trading activity for 206 major stocks in the S&P US stock index. We show that the whole landscape of news that affect stock price movements can be automatically summarized via simple regularized regressions between trading activity and news information pieces decomposed, with the help of simple topic modeling techniques, into their "thematic" features. Using these methods, we are able to estimate and quantify the impacts of news on trading. We introduce network-based visualization techniques to represent the whole landscape of news information associated with a basket of stocks. The examination of the words that are representative of the topic distributions confirms that our method is able to extract the significant pieces of information influencing the stock market. Our results show that one of the most puzzling stylized fact in financial economies, namely that at certain times trading volumes appear to be "abnormally large," can be partially explained by the flow of news. Motivated by superconductivity (SC) in layered nitrides, we study an ionic-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which consists of two sublattices with an energy-level offset, by using an optimization variational Monte Carlo method. Parameter values for the Coulomb interaction and the energy-level offset, to realize a band insulator in non-doped state, are evaluated, and the SC state is investigated in a carrier-doped band insulator. It is found that, in a weakly doped band insulator, spin fluctuation remains and the spin-singlet d-wave SC state is realized. Recently research on bubble and its burst attract much interest of researchers in various field such as economics and physics. Economists have been regarding bubble as a disorder in prices. However, this research strategy has overlooked an importance of the volume of transactions. In this paper, we have proposed a bubble burst model by focusing the transactions incorporating a traffic model that represents spontaneous traffic jam. We find that the phenomenon of bubble burst shares many similar properties with traffic jam formation by comparing data taken from US housing market. Electronic structure and dielectric property in an electronic ferroelectricty, where electric polarization is driven by an electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, are studied. Motivated from layered iron oxides, roles of quantum fluctuation on ferroelectricity in a paired-triangular lattice are focused on. Three types of the extended V-t model are examined by the variational Monte-Carlo method with the Gutzwiller-type correlation factor. It is shown that electron transfer between the triangular layers corresponding to the inter-layer polarization fluctuation promotes the three-fold charge order associated with an electric polarization. This result is in highly contrast to the usual manner of quantum fluctuation in the hydrogen-bond type ferroelectricities and the quantum paraelectric oxides. Spin degree of freedom of electron and a realistic crystal structure for the layered iron oxides further stabilize the polar charge ordered state. We empirically investigate fluctuations in product prices in online markets by using a tick-by-tick price data collected from a Japanese price comparison site, and find some similarities and differences between product and asset prices. The average price of a product across e-retailers behaves almost like a random walk, although the probability of price increase/decrease is higher conditional on the multiple events of price increase/decrease. This is quite similar to the property reported by previous studies about asset prices. However, we fail to find a long memory property in the volatility of product price changes. Also, we find that the price change distribution for product prices is close to an exponential distribution, rather than a power law distribution. These two findings are in a sharp contrast with the previous results regarding asset prices. We study spin-state transition and phase separation involving this transition based on the milti-orbital Hubbard model. Multiple spin states are realized by changing the energy separation between the two orbitals and the on-site Hund coupling. By utilizing the variational Monte-Carlo simulation, we analyze the electronic and magnetic structures in hole doped and undoped states. Electronic phase separation occurs between the low-spin band insulating state and the high-spin ferromagnetic metallic one. We examine theoretically a possibility of ferroelectricity caused by electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, motivated by layered iron oxides. Quantum electronic models in a paired-triangular lattice are analyzed by utilizing the variational Monte Carlo simulation. Our calculation demonstrates that combined effects of electron transfer between the layers, corresponding to quantum fluctuation between the potential minima, and geometrical frustration promote appearance of an electric polarization.
