6. Best brain conditions for winning an esports competition: Electroencephalography amplitude in the frontal and parietal cortices associated with esports competition results

Abstract

Success in competitive matches hinges on psychological and mental preparations, such as strategic decision and emotional control. Although relevant cognitive functions and corresponding neural activity have been reported in a simple short-term laboratory task, the contribution of neural activity to the outcome of a more complex and prolonged match-format task has not been examined. Therefore, we focused on esports players engaged in a fighting video game (FVG). We examined the association between electroencephalography results in the pre-round of FVGs and consequences of the rounds. The results showed that parietal beta and frontal alpha/gamma activities are associated with winning and losing, respectively, depending on the match's situation. Furthermore, parietal beta activity exhibited approximately 80% accuracy in win-loss predictions using machine learning. Our findings suggest that the performance of skilled video game players is influenced by psychological and mental preparations with fluctuations in neural oscillations.

7. Superior Psychological Skills of Advanced Players in Esports: An Examination of Physiological Synchrony

Abstract

Video game competition, called esports, is an intriguing subject for the investigation of psychological skill differences between players; such skills are more weighted toward achieving optimal performance than physical skills are. We looked for differences in psychological skills between advanced and intermediate players and the kind of psychological skill that is critical for defining a player's skill level. We measured the physiological states of players in esports matches and found that the temporal heart rate pattern during competitive matches was highly correlated among advanced players, rather than among intermediate players or players of different levels. Additionally, physiological synchrony among advanced players decreased under sparring situations in which no winner or loser was determined. These results suggest that the unique superior psychological skills of advanced players are motivation control, which is characterized by the ability to maintain and demonstrate a high motivation to win.

22. The effect of cheerleading chants on time estimation performance

Abstract

It is not clear how cheering chants affect time perception which can be critical for sport performance. Here we measuredthe performance participants estimated second-order length of duration using a conventional psychophysical task. In thecontrol condition, five participants were required to produce 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds of target durations by pressing a button ina gymnasium where nobody except for experimenters came in. In the testing condition, a group of cheerleaders appearedand chanted for 20 seconds after each block. The participants were required to complete otherwise the same task as thecontrol condition. The order of conditions was counterbalanced. The percentages of errors of estimated time was 4.229.58,-24.318.81, -24.9117.06, -22.4921.83 for 1, 3, 5 and 10 second of target durations in the control condition. Those valueswere 16.1322.54, -10.7716.22, -11.878.95 and -12.385.74 in the testing condition. In summary, the chants increased theduration participants produced.

Abstract

The prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma who experience recurrence or progression (R/P) is extremely poor, and more effective and less toxic therapies are needed. In the current study, the clinical data of osteosarcoma patients who experienced R/P were retrospectively analyzed to verify the reliability of O‐6‐methylguanine‐DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) protein expression or MGMT promoter methylation for predicting the response to off‐label temozolomide (TMZ)‐containing chemotherapy. Of the 30 evaluable patients, 9 (30%) showed no/low MGMT protein expression, whereas all 16 evaluable patients had unmethylated MGMT promoter irrespective of MGMT protein expression levels. Twenty‐three patients received TMZ‐containing chemotherapy for measurable lesions (n = 14) or as adjuvant therapy following resection of recurrent lesions (n = 9). Among 14 patients with radiologically measurable lesions, the objective response rate was higher in the MGMT no/low‐expression group (50.0%) than in the MGMT intermediate/high‐expression group with borderline significance (0%, p = 0.066). The 6‐month progression‐free survival (PFS) rate in patients with radiologically measurable lesions was significantly higher in the MGMT no/low‐expression group (50.0%) than in the MGMT intermediate/high‐expression group (0%, p = 0.036). In the multivariate analysis of the 23 patients receiving TMZ‐containing chemotherapy, MGMT expression and disease status before TMZ‐containing chemotherapy were significantly associated with PFS. No severe adverse effects were observed during TMZ‐containing chemotherapy. MGMT protein expression, but not MGMT promoter methylation, could predict a favorable outcome in patients receiving TMZ‐containing chemotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Inspired by the recent theoretical suggestion that the random-bond $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular and the kagome lattices might exhibit a randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior when the strength of the randomness exceeds a critical value, and that this "random-singlet state" might be relevant to the QSL behaviors experimentally observed in triangular organic salts $\kappa {\rm -(ET)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3}$and ${\rm EtMe_3 Sb[Pd(dmit)_2]_2}$ and in kagome herbertsmithite ${\rm CuZn_3(OH)_6Cl_2}$, we further investigate the nature of the static and the dynamical spin correlations of these models. We compute the static and the dynamical spin structure factors, $S({\bf q})$ and $S({\bf q},\omega)$, by means of an exact diagonalization method. In both triangular and kagome models, the computed $S({\bf q},\omega)$ in the random-singlet state depends on the wavevector ${\bf q}$ only weakly, robustly exhibiting gapless behaviors accompnied by the broad distribution extending to higher energy $\omega$. Especially in the strongly random kagome model, $S({\bf q},\omega)$ hardly depends on ${\bf q}$, and exhibits an almost flat distribution for a wide range of $\omega$, together with a $\omega=0$ peak. These features agree semi-quantitatively with the recent neutron-scattering data on a single-crystal herbertsmithite, suggesting that the QSL state observed in herbersmithite might indeed be the randomness-induced QSL state, {\it i.e.\/}, the random-singlet state., Comment: To appear in Phys.
