- Abstract
Since the future grid needs to provide sufficient electrical energy with high quality, it is envisaged that most of the used energy will be supplied by grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs). The VSCs are used for connecting renewable energy source to the grid, e.g., wind and solar power. The grid-connected VSC considered in this paper is a three-phase three-wire full-bridge converter in which a capacitor is connected to its dc side, while its ac-side is connected to the grid with current control. When operating under unbalanced voltages at the point of common coupling, either due to the presence of unbalanced loads or due to a grid fault condition, a voltage ripple appears at the dc side. The interaction between the VSC dc- side voltage ripple and the VSC ac-side currents is the main focus of this study. In this paper, we analyze the interaction between the VSC dc-side voltage ripple and the VSC ac-side currents under unbalanced voltages. Furthermore, the proposed model is used to determine in which conditions the stability of the VSC ac-side currents can be guaranteed even in the presence of the dc-side voltage ripple. Experimental results confirm that the system remains stable, although with distorted currents due to the dc voltage ripple. Furthermore, it is also shown that the injection of negative sequence currents can decrease the current distortion.

This paper presents a comparative analysis between results from applications of the p-q and the p-q-r theories in shunt active power filters for three-phase four-wire systems, discussing aspects related to the influence of the system voltage in the control methods that calculate the compensating currents. It is shown that in some cases, a preprocessing of the system voltage is required if the goal is to achieve sinusoidal compensated currents. On the other hand, when the goal is to compensate zero-sequence current, the need of energy storage elements in the active filter is discussed. In this case, if zero-sequence components are present simultaneously in the system voltage and load current, they produce zero-sequence power flow, and the control methods based on both theories must contain additional calculations to allow the elimination of energy storage elements in the active filter. A control strategy based on the p-q theory is proposed to eliminate the neutral current without the need of energy storage elements, with the advantage of avoiding the extra transformation from [alpha][beta]0 to pqr coordinates that is needed in the p-q-r theory. Simulation results are presented for the purpose of comparing the performance of both control methods. Index Terms--Active filters, p-q theory, p-q-r theory.

The thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) is a commercially available flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) device developed for controlled compensation of transmission-line impedance, which consequently leads to the control of transmission-line power flow. The gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC), a FACTS device based on a pair of gate-commutated switches in parallel with a capacitor, can also control impedance and power flow of transmission lines. Here, it is shown that in many situations where a controllable series compensator must be installed, the GCSC may be used instead of the TCSC, possibly with some advantages. A comparison of the sizing of the TCSC and the GCSC components is presented. It is shown that the capacitor in the GCSC can have lower megavolt-amperes than in the TCSC, especially for power-flow control applications. Also, it is shown that the thyristor valve in the TCSC needs to have a higher current rating than the gate-commutated switch valve in the GCSC. Index Terms--Flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS), gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC), series compensation, thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC).

This work presents the development of analytical models for thyristor-controlled reactors (TCRs). A nonlinear model for the TCR was developed based on the use of Generalized Switching Functions and from this model, a detailed linear model was derived. The linear model allows for the analysis and precise understanding of the behavior of the TCR under small disturbances both in the time and frequency domains, for frequency ranges up to some tens of hertz. This model clearly shows that the TCR dynamics are operating point dependent. System parameter variations are also correctly considered in the model. With the proposed model, it is possible to design static var compensators (SVC) controllers in an integrated form, avoiding risks of instabilities and guaranteeing a good overall dynamic performance for the system. Validation of the models was done by comparing simulated results obtained with the proposed model with those obtained with a traditional electromagnetic transients program (EMTP). Index Terms--Generalized switching functions, reactive power control, static var compensators, SVC analytical models.

The subsynchronous resonance (SSR) phenomenon may occur when a steam turbine-generator is connected to a long transmission line with series compensation. The main purpose of this work is to verify the capability of the gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC) to mitigate SSR. For this study the GCSC was tested in conjunction with the IEEE First Benchmark Model. The actual possibility of controlling SSR was verified by digital simulation using the Alternative Transients Program/Electromagnetic Transients Program. As a result it was shown that GCSC can damp SSR even without a specific control. It was also shown that, using a simple controller, SSR as well as electromechanical oscillation can be damped. Index Terms--Controlled series compensation, flexible ac transmission system (FACTS), GCSC, IEEE First Benchmark, subsynchronous resonance (SSR).

This paper describes the GTO Controlled Series Capacitor - G4CSC, an equipment for controlled series compensation of transmission systems. The principles of operation of the GCSC are reviewed and harmonic analysis is performed, showing how much of voltage harmonics are produced by the GCSC. Novel configurations using multi-module and multi-pulse GCSC's are proposed in order to reduce the voltage harmonics. Digital simulations using the EMTP are presented to validate the proposed configurations. Index Terms--FACTS, GTO, series compensation.

The basic theoretical analysis for series connection of semiconductor power switches (valves) for zero-voltage switching (ZVS) is presented. The influences of the switching device parameters on its voltage distribution during steady and transient-state conditions are analyzed. When ZVS technique is used, the design of the voltage equalization elements is easier than when hard switching is used. Simulated results are presented to validate the analysis and design methodology. This work is important for very high-power soft-switching valves and converter designs. As an example to validate the theory, a study based on the gate turn-off thyristor (GTO)-controlled series capacitor is presented. Index Terms--Controlled series capacitor, GTO valves, series connection of switches.

This paper presents an analysis of a new high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission system, which is based on current and voltage source converters (CSC and VSC) in the same circuit. This proposed topology is composed of one CSC (rectifier) and one or more VSCs (inverters) connected through an overhead transmission line in a multiterminal configuration. The main purpose of this Hybrid HVDC (H
2 VDC), as it was designed, is putting together the best benefits of both types of converters in the same circuit: no commutation failure and system’s black start capability in the VSC side, high power converter capability and low cost at the rectifier side, etc. A monopole of the H2 VDC system with one CSC and two VSCs—here, the VSC is the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) considered with full-bridge submodules—in multiterminal configuration is studied. The study includes theoretical analyses, development of the CSC and VSCs control philosophies and simulations. The H2 VDC system’s behavior is analyzed by computational simulations considering steady-state operation and short-circuit conditions at the AC and DC side. The obtained results and conclusions show a promising system for very high-power multiterminal HVDC transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

This research presents a sensitivity analysis of the performance of Synchronous Static Compensator (STATCOM) under different conditions of steady and transient operation aiming to evaluate its behavior in a three-wire distribution system. The operating criteria of this controllable reactive power device are based on the Brazilian Electrical System Distribution Procedures (PRODIST) and the Network Procedures of the Brazilian System Operator (ONS). The following relevant performance indicators were considered: Frequency Variation, Steady State Voltage, Voltage Imbalance, Harmonic Voltage Distortion and Short Term Voltage Variation (VTCD). The main contribution of the present document is the modeling of the control strategy in time domain simulation in order to evaluate the compensator performance during voltage sags and swells, helping to contain the voltage variation at the system coupling point within the limits allowed for the operation; and during faults, helping to control over-current. The thesis investigates the nonlinear stiffness system (NSS) concept in improving wave energy conversion for a point absorber (PA) type wave energy converter (WEC). One semi-submersible sphere is adopted together with the meshing and analytical approaches in calculating the nonlinear Froude-Krylov force. The analytical approach is improved to solve the nonlinear Froude-Krylov force at the instantaneous wetted surface in both regular and irregular wave conditions more efficiently through fitting Bessel function and exponential function with suitable polynomial series according to various wave frequencies. The static analysis of one classical NSS with mechanical compression springs (NSMc) describes three types of configurations: bi-stable, QZS (quasi-zero stiffness), and mono-stable configuration. The response in regular wave conditions indicates that with the nonlinear approach the resonance response is pushed even to a longer period range, besides broadening the response bandwidth. One procedure is established to determine the feasible region of NSMc parameters. Due to the practical consideration, the potential improvements in wave energy conversion associated with the NSMc’s advantages are dramatically weakened. Then the alternative NSS with pneumatic cylinders (NSPn) is investigated in the sequence, showing that in its feasible region, the annual energy production (AEP) does not reduce too much. For the wave climate featuring a long period in the nearshore region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, PA could harvest more wave energy with the NSPn, than with the latching control. Moreover, the lower peak-to-average power ratio shows that using the NSPn, the process of power absorption is smoother.

This thesis proposes the application of the stationary discrete wavelet packet transform (SDWPT) to properly estimate primary power quantities (active, total apparent, nonactive power, and power factor), and distortion power. Additionally, the analysis tools of signal processing developed in this work allowed the development of a method for estimating the grid impedance. The SDWPT provides a uniform frequency band and possesses the timeinvariance property, which is ideal for power estimation and grid impedance estimation in the real-time. The method of estimation of power quality indices was assessed and compared to the IEEE Standard 1459-2010 under different operational scenarios, where stationary synthetic waveforms and with both stationary and nonstationary power quality disturbances were emulating in an experimental setup. Regarding the grid impedance estimation, the current study was developed to identify the impedance of low voltage electric grids interconnected with distributed power generation systems. The validation of the proposed method was accomplished in a distributed generation implemented through the photovoltaic plant of 8 kWp connected to the point of common coupling of a threephase feeder composed by a transformer of 15 kVA.

Some systems like blood pumps and equipment positioned in space stations or high towers require electrical machines with highly reliable operation and extended durability. Mechanical contact between rotating and static parts are a major cause of failure in electrical machines. To eliminate mechanical contact completely, magnetic bearings rose as an alternative to the usual mechanical ones. Through use of permanent magnets and electromagnets, it became possible to levitate the rotating parts, addressing the wearing and durability problems, at the expense of an increase in complexity of operation. In this kind of machine, miniaturization becomes more challenging. Position control structures are included and highly stable positioning is required. Each fraction of millimeter can lead the rotor shaft to contact with the stator. By adapting the mechanical structure and electromagnetic parameters of a bearingless motor, it was possible to optimize flux density distribution and increase torque in a miniaturized permanent magnet synchronous motor, while keeping position stability high. This dissertation presents the method employed and the intermediate steps taken towards the final version, as well the finite element analysis results.

The power renewable system must operate off the grid, and is based on wind turbine, solar panels and a bank of batteries. Based on a bibliographical research on several desalination methods, the reverse osmosis (RO) desalinator was chosen because it was considered the easiest commercial acquisition and the possibility of composing a low power system. The main elements in this process are a module with semipermeable membranes ("skid") and an induction type electric motor for the pumping of water under high pressure. Therefore, the power system is designed to meet the power demand of that engine. The performance of two hybrid system configurations that have been termed system topology 1 and 2 are analyzed. In both topologies the wind power converters are diode rectifier and DC-DC converter classic boost, the one for the photovoltaic solar array is a "boost"CC-CC converter, and a "buck-boost"converter manages the energy flow of the battery bank. This assembly forms the DC bus that feeds a three-level three-phase Neutral-Point Clamped (NPC) three-phase inverter. In the case of topology 2 the distinguishing point is the use of a voltage doubler that combines the two boost converters to form up the DC bus. This converter was developed by making a small modification to the classical topology of the quadrupler rectifier of Greinacher / Cockcroft-Walton. In each boost converter, a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm was implemented. In the case of battery bank modeling, given the complexity of this theme observed in the researched literature, a simplified and specific model for the system operation regime is realized. The analyzes were performed by considering different situations at extreme limits of maximum and minimum wind and solar irradiation to meet specific conditions of load demand. The commercial program PSIM is used in carrying out all analyzes.

Initially, an optimization process is proposed to determine the optimum dimensions of a control-free point absorber wave energy converter (WEC). The methodology is based on frequency domain simulation of the WEC oscillations and a statistical analysis method called “design of experiment” (DOE). Then, using the preliminary results, an approach based on a series of time domain analyses is adapted to obtain the optimum dimensions of a point absorber controlled by a constant-delay latching. The optimization goal is to maximize both WEC absorbed power and absorption bandwidth when providing a natural period close to the predominant wave periods of the sea site. In addition, a wave-to-wire numerical model is developed to address the performance of the COPPE/Seahorse device in the nearshore Rio de Janeiro. The code is adapted to model a specific PTO system consisting of a gearbox and a rotational generator. An adapted constant-delay latching control aiming at the optimization of the WEC power generation is proposed and the results are compared to the control-free model.

This work presents a study of sensorless speed control by field orientation considering the use of a three-phase induction motor fed through long cables through subsea umbilicals. For this study, the adopted electrical model reproduces a system that is used to drive a subsea pump in offshore oil fields. The long tieback and the absence of sensors, as an application requirement, can undermine or compromise motor performance. To make the field-oriented control feasible to the proposed scenario, this work brings the use of field observers and speed estimators instead the use of sensors that are typically used in this type of control. To improve performance, this dissertation brings a technique to compensate the effects of cable and filter installed in the output of the converter. The proposed system is submitted to simulations that reproduce different conditions of predicted field operations. The simulations also show the comparison of the performance of the proposed control against the performance of the system with a scalar control. The results here presented show that the speed control proposed for the application using long cable is robust and feasible.

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a subject of increasing interest for power electronics researchers. Therefore, the use of this topology in the most diverse application areas has been studied, especially in high voltage direct current transmission systems. Thus, this work describes the MMC converter model, considering both half and full-bridge submodules, associated with a model predictive control strategy, which considers a reduced number of states to control the power flow delivered to the grid, through AC current regulation; and for minimizing circulating current components. The algorithm used to implement the balancing of submodules’ capacitor voltages was developed based on sorting methods, but also considering the cost function idea. In order to verify the performance of the adopted strategy, qualitative analyses were made based on simulation results conducted in the environment of circuit simulation PSIM, in which the logic of the control system was programmed in C language. Tests were also carried out on an experimental prototype whose circuit refers to one leg of the MMC, and the results obtained confirm the model. In these tests the circulating current was not analyzed.

In relation to the control algorithms for active filters, the contribution results from the extension involving the concepts of selective harmonic filtering to compensate unbalanced and harmonic currents in a 4-wire three-phase electrical grid. These algorithms derive from the instantaneous power theory (pq theory) together with a synchronizing PLL-circuit. It is important to mention that these algorithm do not use the currents consumed by the loads, i.e, only the voltages at the point common coupling (PCC) are used to determine the reference harmonic currents. Only the output converter currents were used as a feedback to the PWM control. These algorithms were also employed in a hybrid filter to compensate harmonic currents in a 3-wire three-phase electrical grid. Finally, some improvements on these control algorithms were done, such that the output converter currents used as a feedback of the PWM control were eliminated. Simulations results were provided in order to analyze the behavior of the active and hybrid filters in the aforementioned conditions.

This thesis presents an strategy to control a two–phase, three-wire shunt active power filter (APF). This APF can be implemented as an extra functionality of the embedded voltage source converter in the propulsion system of an electric vehicle (EV). This application would be useful in the compensation of residential and commercial electrical installations fed by a two–phase three–wire grid connection. The working principle of shunt two-phase APF is presented and its mathematical models are also treated. Concepts of the instantaneous powers p and q, called single-phase p–q theory, are reviewed. The relationship between these quantities and the conventional active and reactive powers is discussed. Then, some adaptations are done in the implementation of such theory. The main one is related to the implementation method of singlephase αβ transformations. After these adaptations, the modified p–q theory is used to described the developed algorithm to control the two–phase APF. The adopted control strategy consists of compensating all current harmonics and reactive power, as well as equalizing currents in involved phases. Simulation results are presented to show the APF operation in steady-state and under load changes. Yet, some experimental results are presented to show the APF in operation. The obtained results validate the presented working principle and the control strategy proposed in this thesis.

Além disto, resultados de medição serão apresentados para validar a proposta de separação das responsabilidades na geração de distúrbios, sejam estes originários nas cargas ou nas fontes do sistema elétrico Abstract: Considering the various applications related to the modern power systems, one of the major challenges in the last decades has been the interpretation and control of the physical phenomena using the so called power theories. Applications related to the project and control of devices and systems have been influenced by the presence of waveform distortions, as well as voltage asymmetries caused by unbalanced loads in polyphase systems. In addition, the last trends related to distributed generation networks, especially micro-grids, are vulnerable to frequency deviation and are more sensitive to load disturbances. In this scenario, the analysis and operation of the power system became even more complex. In such context, this work brings some contributions to the so called Conservative Power Theory, initially proposed by professors P. Tenti and P. Mattavelli, from the University of Padova (Italy), where part of the work has been realized. The influence of frequency deviation, distortion and/or asymmetry of the measured voltages have been analyzed. As a result, the proposed renewed theory provides a proper basis to lead to the characterization of modern power systems. Considering the proposed theory, a possible accountability approach has been presented, which allows the characterization and separation of load and supply responsibilities. Besides, it provides a platform for designing cooperative control techniques for distributed switching power converters and static reactive compensator. Both, the contributions to the Conservative Power Theory and its application to the cooperative control of power conditioners have been evaluated by means of computational simulation of different electrical circuits. In addition, the proposed accountability approach has been validated by means of experimental data measurements Doutorado Energia Elétrica Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica
