The sustainability assessment of waste management systems requires tools capable of evaluating material quality degradation during recycling. Existing research has predominantly focused on the development of substitutability models for plastics, leaving a gap in addressing other materials like glass. Glass is commonly regarded as endlessly recyclable, even though its actual recyclability depends on several crucial factors, such as colour and pollutant contamination. Many Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies in this field assume a one-to-one substitution coefficient, neglecting material deterioration and inaccurately representing real-world scenarios. This study proposes and assesses a substitutability model for glass, aiming to measure the replacement extent between virgin materials and recycled crushed glass (cullet). The methodology is based on two key factors: technical quality substitutability, considering impurities and colour contaminations in cullet, and market applicability, accounting for market demand. Once formulated, the model was applied to a European case study on glass waste treatment. Two scenarios were considered: one assuming complete substitution between cullet and raw materials, the other incorporating quality degradation. Findings indicate that, accounting for quality degradation, only 83% of cullet effectively replaces raw materials, resulting in a decrease of the benefit associated with recycling of 13–23% for the different examined impact categories, compared to complete replacement assumption. Heavy metals (HM) have gained significant attention in terms of regular monitoring and detection owing to their toxicity, non-biodegradability, and persistence. Current techniques for detecting HM are expensive, cumbersome, and require sophisticated instruments and skilled labour. Hence, developing cheap, rapid, energy-efficient, and accurate sensors is imperative and electrochemical techniques have emerged as promising tools. The current study involves the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor for the concurrent detection of lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) ions using modified carbon paste electrodes (mCPE). Activated carbon (AC) with a BET surface area of 1118 m2 g−1 was obtained by chemical activation and thermal treatment of the waste rubberwood sawdust. AC-Graphite, AC-Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO), and AC-RGO-Chitosan were the types of mCPEs that were utilised. The electrochemical behaviours and effects of pH, concentration, and scan rate were studied using Cyclic voltammetry (CV). Studies on detection were conducted using CV and linear sweep voltammetry. Although all the 3 mCPEs detected Cd2+ and Pb2+ in the simulated wastewater, the CPE with RGO and AC could detect Cd2+ as low as 10.91 µg L−1 and Pb2+ as low as 14.01 µg L−1. Anaerobic co-digestion (ACoD) has been adjudged as an efficient technology to advance the goal of climate change adaptability and carbon neutrality during waste treatment and bioenergy generation. Prior to digestion integration, an evaluation of the compatibility of the waste streams is critical to enhanced bioenergy output. This study examined the methane potential, microbial ecology, and kinetics during the co-digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), sewage scum (SS), and a blended mixture of 1 part of new and 2 parts of mature leachate (LB) through mesophilic biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. Synergistic interaction within the mixtures increased methane yield by up to 92% (486.7 mL/gVS) over the treatment of OFMSW alone (252.3 mL/gVS). Likewise, the methane yield of LB-containing mixtures was enhanced by 16–41.5% over LB treatment alone (344 mL/gVS). Model estimates by modified Gompertz (MG) and logistic function (LF) were conclusive that the mixtures caused the methane production rate to improve by up to 16% from OFMSW alone and by at least 22% from LB alone. Furthermore, microbial analysis of mixtures revealed the proportion of LB in the mixture had a higher influence on the diversity than OFMSW. Even though acetoclastic Methanosaeta was more dominant, methane production was via a dual methanogenic pathway associated with both acetoclastic Methanosaeta and hydrogenotrophic Methanospirillum. Finally, the results obtained provide an insight on ACoD as a sustainable waste management strategy to enhance bioenergy production and reduce emissions through the recirculation of multiple heterogeneous waste streams into economic use. The removal of uranium from radioactive wastewater is an important step in nuclear waste management. In this study, a solid adsorbent was developed utilizing mesoporous alumina encapsulated within polyethersulfone (PES) beads for effective uranium extraction. The encapsulation process enhances the stability and selectivity of the material, while the mesoporous structure of alumina enables controlled mass transfer and optimal uranium adsorption. These composite beads were synthesized and thoroughly characterized, and their performance was evaluated for uranium removal from simulated radioactive wastewater. The synthesized materials have been characterized by FTIR, TGA–DSC, SEM, EDX and BET surface area analysis techniques to get complete insight into morphology, functionality and topography of materials. Batch adsorption experiments revealed rapid uranium uptake, reaching equilibrium within a short time frame. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be ~18 mg g−1. These findings establish the potential of mesoporous alumina-encapsulated PES beads as a promising candidate for uranium extraction, offering a valuable contribution to the advancement of radioactive waste treatment technologies. The lack of access to hygienic conditions and clean water is a serious issue in developing countries. Eco-friendly, bio-synthesised nanomaterials-based catalyst will be potential candidate material for waste water treatment. In this study, Phyllanthus niruri plant extract was used to make non-toxic, cost-effective ZnO NPs. The X-ray diffraction pattern was shown that the bio-synthesised ZnO NPs were in hexagonal wurtzite structure. The SEM image was used to analyse the surface morphology of the NPs, and the chemical purity of the NPs was analysed by EDAX spectrum. The various functional groups that exist in the NPs and purity of the prepared samples were analysed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The bio-synthesised ZnO NPs decolourised the methylene blue dye and Reactive Red 120. The larger surface area of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and wide absorption band of the NPs led to superior photocatalytic activity under the sunlight irradiation. The bio-synthesised ZnO NPs prevented or slowed down the oxidative damage of cells by controlling the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pesticide contamination to water bodies is considered as a global concern. This study involves the use of activated carbon synthesized from the shells of Thevetia peruviana shell (TPS) for the removal of the potential pollutant, Methoxychlor (MXC) from water. The TPS was activated using potassium hydroxide and was characterized by pH point zero charge (pHpzc), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). The activated material shows a high BET of 394.97 m2/g with a pHpzc of 2. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of operating conditions such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, and contact time. Under optimum conditions, adsorption of MXC onto TPS had a removal efficiency of 94.90%. The sorption experiment data best fits the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) and also correlated with Langmuir isotherm model (maximum sorption capacity of 197.2 mg/g). Due to the rapid growth of the aquaculture industry, large amounts of organic waste are released into nature and polluted the environment. Traditional organic waste treatment such as composting is a time-consuming process that retains the ammonia (NH 3) in the compost, and the compost produced has little economic value as organic fertilizer. Illegal direct discharge into the environment is therefore widespread. This study investigates the recovery of NH 3 through thermophilic composting of shrimp aquaculture sludge (SAS) and its application as a soil conditioner for the growth of mango plants. A maximum composting temperature of 57.10 °C was achieved through self-heating in a 200 L bench-scale reactor, resulting in NH 3 recovery of 224.04 mol/ton-ds after 14 days. The addition of calcium hydroxide and increased aeration have been shown to increase NH 3 volatilization. The recovered NH 3 up to 3 kg-N can be used as a source of clean nitrogen for high-value microalgae cultivation, with a theoretical yield of up to 34.85 kg-algae of microalgae biomass from 1 ton-ds of SAS composting. Despite the high salinity, SAS compost improved mango plant growth and disease resistance. These results highlight the potential of SAS compost as a sustainable source of clean nitrogen for microalgae cultivation and soil conditioner, contributing to a waste-free circular economy through nutrient recycling and sustainable agriculture. The effects of the initial C/N ratio on the composting of sewage sludge and cotton residues are not reported in the literature. Understanding the main composting control parameters is essential for the good stabilization of these wastes. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate different initial C/N ratios for the composting of sewage sludge and cotton waste, aiming to find the ranges with the best performance for the process and quality of the final organic compost. In this sense, five mixtures of sewage sludge (S) and cotton residues (C) were prepared and composted with three replications for each treatment in a completely randomized design. Physicochemical parameters were evaluated during composting and in the final organic compounds. A Multivariate Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to evaluate the agronomic quality of organic compounds. The thermal behaviour of the mixtures presented differences. The treatments 90C10S, 80C20S and 67C33S showed the highest EXI² index (3566.64, 3448.39 and 2738.89), longer duration of thermophilic phase (12 and 13 days) and better potential for maximum degradation (A) of organic matter (67.5, 61.2 and 65.6%C). The final compounds of 90C10S and 80C20S showed higher pH values (7.9 and 7.5) and higher CEC (123.6 and 114.0 meq/100 g OM). PCA showed similarity in the agronomic quality of organic compounds for 90C10S, 80C20S and 67C33S. The treatment 28C72S (initial C/N ratio of 16.6) presented final pH of 5.3 and did not meet the minimum limit required by Brazilian regulations. Construction waste slurry is used as backfill in construction engineering as a type of solid waste. However, the initial water content of the waste slurry is high and must be dewatered beforehand to realize its resource utilization. This study proposes a staged vacuum preloading (VP) method with prefabricated horizontal drain (PHD)-prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) to treat waste slurry considering the advantages of VP with PHD in waste slurry disposal. The effect of different vacuum loading modes on PHD-PVD on waste slurry treatment is analyzed through four groups of large-scale experimental model tests. The test results indicate that the staged VP with PHD-PVD can effectively alleviate the clogging compared to the effect of synchronous VP with PHD-PVD, and the effect of the soil drainage consolidation is improved. The apparent clogging is alleviated by the gradually increasing vacuum pressure applied to PHD and PVD, when combined with the results of the microstructure analysis. Biological wastewater treatment using trickle bed reactors is a commonly known and used solution. One of the key elements of the proper operation of the trickle bed bioreactor is the appropriate selection of biofilm support elements. The respective properties of the bioreactor packing media used can influence, among other things, the efficiency of the treatment process. In this study, the possibility of polyester waste material usage for the preparation of the biofilm support elements was tested. The following properties were checked: adsorption capacity, swelling, surface morphology, microbicidal properties, as well as the possibility of their use in biological wastewater treatment. The tested elements did not adsorb copper nor showed microbicidal properties for bacterial strains Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as well as fungal strains Aspergillus niger and Chaetomium globosum. The hydrophilic and rough nature of the element surface was found to provide a friendly support for biofilm formation. The durability of the elements before and after their application in the biological treatment process was confirmed by performing tests such as compressive strength, FTIR analysis, hardness analysis and specific surface area measurement. The research confirmed the applicability of the packing elements based on polyester textile waste to the treatment of textile wastewater. The treatment efficiency of the model wastewater stream was above 90%, while in the case of a stream containing 60% actual industrial wastewater it was above 80%. The proposed solution enables the simultaneous management of textile waste and wastewater treatment, which is consistent with the principles of a circular economy. The selected waste raw material is a cheap and easily available material, and the use of the developed packing elements will reduce the amount of polyester materials ending up in landfills. Aluminosilicate solid waste, primarily comprising red mud, coal gangue, fly ash, and tailings, is characterized by high annual production, low comprehensive utilization rate, and significant environmental damage. Currently, there is an urgent need for effective methods to manage and valorize aluminosilicate solid wastes. Thermodynamic investigations enable the assessment of phase transition behaviors, process conditions (such as temperature and pressure), and the direction and feasibility of reactions. Moreover, thermodynamics can predict the composition of resulting products and reveal the reaction mechanisms. All the aforementioned issues are instrumental in refining solid waste treatment processes and achieving efficient use of resources. Therefore, to promote the application of aluminosilicate solid waste, this paper describes the predictive and guiding functions of thermodynamics in the utilization of solid waste, focusing on three aspects: composition design, ceramization, and process optimization. • GWP of housefly larvae treatment is significantly higher in summer than in winter. • Bioconversion itself contributed very little to GWP. • GWP will increase slightly when larvae are stored by drying rather than freezing. • There is a contradiction between a higher mature larvae production and a lower GWP. The significant increase in the demand for biomass waste treatment after garbage classification has led to housefly larvae treatment becoming an attractive treatment option. It can provide a source of protein while treating biomass waste, which means that nutrients can be returned to the natural food chain. However, the performance of this technology in terms of its environmental impacts is still unclear, particularly with regards to global warming potential (GWP).This study used a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to assess a housefly larvae treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 50 tons of biomass waste per day. The LCA results showed that the 95% confidence intervals for the GWP in summer and winter were determined to be 24.46–32.81 kg CO 2 equivalent (CO 2 -eq)/ton biomass waste and 5.37–10.08 kg CO 2 -eq/ton biomass waste, respectively. The greater GWP value in summer is due to the longer ventilation time and higher ventilation intensity in summer, which consumes more power. The main GWP contributions are from (1) electricity needs (accounting for 78.6% of emissions in summer and 70.2% in winter) and (2) product substitution by mature housefly larvae and compost (both summer and winter accounting for 96.8% of carbon reduction). With ever-improving social and medical awareness about menstrual hygiene in India, the demand for sanitary napkins has increased significantly. The utilization of high-quality and environment-friendly raw materials to produce these pads is further supporting the growth of the market. However, with improving demand and usage, the need for proper disposal techniques becomes more relevant, since all of these pads get contaminated with human blood which makes them a biohazard and can cause significant damage to human health and the environment. One sanitary pad takes around 800 years to degrade naturally and the plastic and super absorbent polymers (SAPs) in sanitary pads are non-biodegradable and can take multiple decades to degrade. Waste management technologies such as pyrolysis, gasification, and resource recovery can be adopted to manage tons of sanitary waste. Currently, sanitary waste treatment mainly focuses on landfilling, incineration, and composting, where biohazard wastes are mixed with tons of solid waste. Disposable sanitary pads have a high carbon footprint of about 5.3 kg CO2 equivalent every year. Innovative solutions for sanitary pad disposal are discussed in the manuscript which includes repurposing of derived waste cellulose and plastic fraction into value-added products. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate and compare the environmental impacts, throughout the life cycle, of the main treatment systems employed by the industry, as well as to identify the processes that contribute most to these environmental impacts. To achieve this, a bibliographical search was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection database platform, utilizing the keywords "life cycle assessment", "pig", "treatment", and "manure" or "slurry". The search was restricted to publications from the last five years (2019–2023), resulting in a total of 66 publications that were then analyzed according to the functional unit (FU) adopted. For the 10 publications whose FUs were expressed in tons or cubic meters of treated manure, a descriptive and quantitative analysis was carried out. It was found that anaerobic digestion has been the most widely used treatment technology for pig manure over the past five years, according to the LCA methodology. These systems, configured as biogas and biofertilizer production facilities, have proven to be environmentally friendly and could play a crucial role in the energy transition and decarbonization of the energy matrix. Agricultural waste is an emerging and promising resource due to its abundant organic compounds and high water‐holding capacity. It plays a crucial role in improving soil water use efficiency and contributing to sustainable agricultural development. This study aimed to investigate the impact of returning agricultural waste on soil moisture characteristics. Different volume ratios (4:5:1:0, 3:5:1:1, 2:5:1:2, 1:5:1:3, and 0:5:1:4) of agricultural waste blend (AWB) consisting of cattle manure, yellow loam soil, wheat straw, and distiller's grains were examined, and the water‐holding performance of the five AWB ratios under various suction forces was compared. The analysis confirmed the suitability of the Van Genuchten‐Mualem model for fitting soil moisture characteristic curves at different ratios. The study also examined the influences of AWB ratios on soil‐specific water capacity, hydraulic parameters, and equivalent pore size. The results showed that agricultural waste effectively increased soil‐specific water capacity, available water content, soil WHC(Water‐holding capacity), and soil pore count. Furthermore, reducing cattle manure and increasing distiller's grains enhanced these effects. For instance, when the AWB ratio was 0:5:1:4, soil‐specific water capacity increased by 47.7%, while field WHC and available water content increased by 9.9% and 3.8%, respectively. Additionally, the number of extremely small and small pores increased by 1.4% and 0.77%, respectively. These findings provide valuable theoretical guidance for agricultural waste treatment and improving soil WHC. Based on the results, it is recommended to increase the proportion of distiller's grains and reduce organic fertilizer when using agricultural waste for improving soil WHC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bio-based products are a fast-growing market due to increasing consumer consciousness for sustainability. Although this is per se a positive trend, it leads to a higher demand for organic feedstocks which normally comes from primary agricultural sources and can lead to undesired deforestation or other land use changes to farmland. At the same time, Europe is facing another challenge related with the treatment of organic wastes. In this context, the project CAFIPLA developed an integrated process to convert heterogeneous organic materials to building blocks for the bio-based economy. This study performs a life cycle sustainability assessment (life cycle assessment, life cycle costing and social life cycle assessment) of the production of short chain carboxylic acids (SCCA) employing municipal bio-wastes as a feedstock. In addition to a hot-spot identification to detect the main sources of impact, a comparison of the novel technology with the current benchmark is carried out applying a cradle-to-gate approach and using 1 kg of SCCA as a functional unit. Results show the great performance of CAFIPLA in all the environmental categories analysed. Furthermore, the profitability of the plant is also verified, reaching a payback period below 6 years as long as the product is sold above 0.49 €/kg. Resourceful utilization of coal gasification fine slag (CGFS), a typical coal-based solid waste, has always been a trial and challenge in solid waste treatment. In developing its utilization value, fewer steps and lower energy consumption during treatment are more favorable. Herein, CGFS was modified by combining BiOBr to develop its possible application in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The BiOBr/CGFS photocatalysts were synthesized at ambient temperature by a simple hydrolysis method with zero pre-treatment of CGFS. The synthesized composites show improved effective photocatalytic performance in the degradation of organic pollutant and the BOB/CGFS20 showed the best activity, which can remove 89.3% of phenol within 90 minutes, 84.53% of sulfamethoxazole within 75 minutes and 84.96% of bisphenol A within 120 minutes. Moreover, the components in CGFS that may play a positive role were investigated and the results showed that CGFS acted as a carrier, and most likely, the carbon materials and metal oxides such as Fe2O3 and/or TiO2 in it led to the improvement of the quantum efficiency of BiOBr and further promoted the photocatalytic performance. Hydrogen is one of the most important energy alternatives to conventional fossil‐based fuel. Solar energy based photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) is a salient approach to produce hydrogen fuel but its efficiency is generally limited by the sluggish and energy‐unfavorable oxidation reaction. Meanwhile, waste treatment has become a worldwide problem and clean treatment is highly demanded to avoid the vast greenhouse emission currently. Inspiringly, PHE can be effectively coupled with the favorable photooxidation of many wastes, which kills two birds with one stone. In this review, the recent progress in PHE coupled with waste treatment is presented, where typical solid, liquid, and gas wastes have been briefly discussed. Focusing on the understanding of complicated reaction mechanism and the revelation of oxidation products, the cutting‐edge techniques for photophysics and surface chemistry characterization have been analyzed, which are imperative to facilitate the following investigation. Finally, the developing trend and existing issues in current research are also discussed in detail so that a holistic blueprint of PHE coupled with waste treatment can be portrayed to accelerate their application in a realistic world. This manuscript proposes a method for effective discharging method of pulsed energy in industrial effluents. The proposed approach is based on the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and Electro hydraulic Plasma Discharge (EHPD). The objective function of the proposed approach is minimizing the concentration of the ethylene blue (MB) dye in the industrial waste water. Using DBD and EHPD technique, treating such industrial effluents before mixing to the running water can effectively prevent polluting the water bodies and human health. It is one of the tertiary waste water treatments, which can also degrade biological substances. DBD technique is one of the advanced oxidation technique to de-color MB dye and the EHPD reactor is a strong and extremely efficient method for the degradation of MB. By then, the proposed model is implemented in the MATLAB platform and the implementation is calculated with the present procedure. The study concludes that the DBD and EHPD method outperforms other methods in terms of degradation efficiency. Leaching of potentially hazardous substances, especially the heavy metals from Incineration Bottom Ash (IBA) is a major problem in its recyclable usage. To address this concern, treatment of IBA is indispensable before it can be reused. IBA subjected to laboratory-scale treatment typically yields clearer conclusions in terms of leaching behaviors, benefiting from the controlled laboratory environment. However, the leaching behaviors of commercially treated IBA appear to be more ambiguous due to the complex and comprehensive nature of industrial-scale treatments, where multiple treatment techniques are involved concurrently. Furthermore, treatment efficiencies vary among different plants. In this study, three types of commercially treated IBA were sampled from leading waste treatment companies in Singapore. Characterization and leaching tests were performed on the treated IBAs in both standardized and modified manners to simulate various scenarios. Besides deionized water, artificial seawater was used as a leachant in leaching tests for simulating seawater intrusion. The results reveal the promoting effect of seawater on the leaching levels of several elements from three types of treated IBA, which may require special attention for IBA application and landfill near the coast. The combination of microbial electrolytic cells and anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) became an efficient method to improve CO 2 capture for waste sludge treatment. By adding CaCl 2 and wollastonite, the CO 2 sequestration effect with mineral carbonation under 0 V and 0.8 V was studied. The results showed that applied voltage could increase dissolved chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) degradation efficiency and biogas yield effectively. In addition, wollastonite and CaCl 2 exhibited different CO 2 sequestration performances due to different Ca2+ release characteristics. Wollastonite appeared to have a better CO 2 sequestration effect and provided a wide margin of pH change, but CaCl 2 released Ca2+ directly and decreased the pH of the MEC-AD system. The results showed methane yield reached 137.31 and 163.50 mL/g SCOD degraded and CO 2 content of biogas is only 12.40 % and 2.22 % under 0.8 V with CaCl 2 and wollastonite addition, respectively. Finally, the contribution of chemical CO 2 sequestration by mineral carbonation and biological CO 2 sequestration by hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was clarified with CaCl 2 addition. The chemical and biological CO 2 sequestration percentages were 46.79 % and 53.21 % under 0.8 V, respectively. With the increased applied voltage, the contribution of chemical CO 2 sequestration rose accordingly. An annual production of about 500 million tons of household food waste (HFW) has been documented, resulting in significant implications for human health and the environment in the absence of appropriate treatment. The anaerobic fermentation of HFW in an open system offers the potential to recover high value-added products, lactic acid (LA), thereby simultaneously addressing waste treatment and enhancing resource recovery efficiency. Most of LA fermentation studies have been conducted under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, with limited research on the production of LA through anaerobic fermentation under hyperthermophilic conditions. This study aimed to produce LA through anaerobic fermentation from HFW under hyperthermophilic conditions (70 ± 1 °C), while varying pH values (5.0 ± 0.1, 7.0 ± 0.1, and 9.0 ± 0.1), and compare the results with LA production under mesophilic (35 ± 1 °C) and thermophilic (52 ± 1 °C) conditions. The findings of this study indicated that the combination of hyperthermophilic conditions and a neutral pH (pH7_70) yielded the highest concentration of LA, measuring at 17.75 ± 1.51 g/L. The mechanism underlying the high yield of LA at 70 °C was elucidated through the combined analysis of organics dissolution, enzymes activities, and 16S rRNA microbiome sequencing. Clean up following the wide-area release of a persistent biological agent has the potential to generate significant waste. Waste containing residual levels of biological contaminants may require off-site shipment under the U.S. Department of Transportation's (US DOT) solid waste regulations for Category A infectious agents, which has packaging and size limitations that do not accommodate large quantities. Treating the waste on-site to inactivate the bio-contaminants could alleviate the need for Category A shipping and open the possibility for categorizing the waste as conventional solid waste with similar shipping requirements as municipal garbage. To collect and package waste for on-site treatment, a semi-permeable nonwoven-based fabric was developed. The fabric was designed to contain residual bio-contaminants while providing sufficient permeability for penetration by a gaseous decontamination agent. The nonwoven fabric was tested in two bench-scale experiments. First, decontamination efficacy and gas permeability were evaluated by placing test coupons inoculated with spores of a Bacillus anthracis surrogate inside the nonwoven material. After chlorine dioxide fumigation, the coupons were analyzed for spore viability and results showed a ≥6 Log reduction on all test materials except glass. Second, filters cut from the nonwoven material were tested in parallel with commercially available cellulose acetate filters having a known pore size (0.45 μm) and results demonstrate that the two materials have similar permeability characteristics. Overall, results suggest that the nonwoven material could be used to package waste at the point of generation and then moved to a nearby staging area where it could be fumigated to inactivate bio-contaminants. The Isolated Overburden Grout Injection Technology is employed for the "Three down" coal resource mining, ground subsidence management, and fly ash waste treatment, exemplifying the concept of environmentally friendly mining. The analysis of Isolated Overburden Grout Injection Technology can be effectively conducted utilizing the large-deflection inclined thin plate combined with the slurry model. However, differences in stratigraphic parameters, such as main roof and principal key strata (PKS), among different mines, as well as variations in design parameters like working face dimensions, mining height, coal seam angle of inclination, mining speed, and grouting parameters such as the number of grouting holes, start and finish times. These parameters lead to variations in outcomes such as PKS deflection and Bed-separation development, as well as the maximum subsidence and extent of the ground subsidence basin. To guarantee accurate and effective safeguarding of village structures, exploitation of coal resources, and appropriate management of fly ash waste, it is crucial to assess each parameter's influence in the model thoroughly. With the development of industry and economy, ammonia nitrogen pollutions in surface water are of great concern worldwide. This study investigated the historical contents of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and unionized ammonia molecules (NH3) in nine fresh lakes in China during 2014–2022. Three different classification methods (flood season, season, and geographical distribution) were used to analyze the concentration variation of TAN and NH3. The concentration of TAN first decreased and then increased in the flood season, showing a lower concentration in summer and a higher concentration in winter. The variation trend of NH3 was in an opposite way with TAN. Correlation analysis between ammonia and 10 water quality parameters and 4 pollution emission and treatment parameters showed that the correlation coefficient between TAN and total phosphorus (total nitrogen) was 0.44 (0.43), respectively. The correlation coefficients between average annual TAN concentration and total emissions (waste water treatment input) were 0.35 (0.53), respectively. Combined with ecotoxicity data from a series of aquatic species, the ecological risks of TAN and NH3 in lakes were evaluated using hazard quotient and joint probability curve methods. From 2014 to 2022, the probability of 5% species affected in the acute ecological risk of TAN and NH3 is lower than 0.01, but for the chronic ecological risk of TAN and NH3, the probabilities of 5% species affected are 0.003–0.030 and 0.04–0.14, respectively. The continuous accumulation of waste, particularly from industries, often ends up in landfills. However, this waste can be transformed into a valuable resource through innovative methods. This process not only reduces environmental pollution but also generates additional useful products. This study aims to screen novel high-efficiency cellulose-degrading bacteria from cow dung, forest soil, brewery waste, and agro-industrial waste in the Debre Berhan area for the treatment of cellulose-rich agricultural waste. The serial dilution and pour plate method was used to screen for cellulolytic bacteria and further characterized using morphological and biochemical methods. From eleven isolates cow dung 1 (CD1), cow dung 6 (CD6) and cow dung (CD3) which produced the largest cellulolytic index (3.1, 2.9 and 2.87) were selected. Samples from forest soil, and spent grain didn't form a zone of clearance, and effluent treatment and industrial waste (IW9) shows the smallest cellulolytic index. Three potential isolates were then tested for cellulolytic activity, with cow dung 1 (CD1) displaying promising cellulase activity. These bacterial isolates were then identified as Bacillus species, which were isolated from cow dung 1 (CD1) with maximum cellulase production. The high‐temperature industrial waste oil treatment has put forward new requirements for membrane materials. Poly (tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is regarded as the excellent membrane material for membrane process, due to its excellent properties. Herein, the reinforced PTFE hollow fiber membrane (PTFE‐HFM) was prepared by the combination of wrapping and heat setting technology. The objection of this study was focusing on the outstanding chemical and thermal resistance of PTEF‐HFM for overcoming harsh waste oil treatment. PTFE‐HFM exhibited better chemical resistance in the experiment of acid and alkali compared to PVDF‐HFM, which the surface of PVDF‐HFM corroded obviously and none of PTFE‐HFM. The pore size and porosity were precisely adjusted by heat setting technology. Firstly, the morphologies of PTFE‐HFM was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, which exhibited favorable interfacial bonding state between PTFE separation layer and supporting layer. Subsequently, the prepared membranes exhibited high‐temperature waste oil permeability of 195 L m−2 h−1 bar−1with only 3% attenuation in long‐term operation. Besides, the rejection of lubricants contained activated carbon also reached to 99%. Waste treatment using black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens L.) larvae is an emerging technology that reduces livestock manure disposal. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different growth stage BSF larvae on the decomposition potential (Experiment 1) and characteristics (Experiment 2) of pig manure. BSF larval instars were randomly divided in three groups according to their developmental stage, with three replicates per group, using a randomized block design. Each treatment group consisted of 1 kg of 2nd, 3rd, or 4th instar BSF larvae added in 10 kg of pig manure (Group 1, 2, or 3, respectively). In Experiment 1, 2nd and 3rd instar BSF larvae treatments resulted in greater decomposition levels of pig manure compared with 4th instar BSF larvae groups. In Experiment 2, BSF larvae improved the nutrient content of manure, leading to an increase in the total nitrogen levels and a decrease in total carbon content and C:N ratio, rendering it suitable for use as an organic fertilizer. In addition, the increased N levels of treated BSF manure were not related to lower pH levels. BSF larvae can greatly reduce ADF and NDF pig manure contents as a result of the larvae's waste reduction potential. Overall, BSF 3rd instar larvae have proven to be a useful tool for the sustainable management of pig manure by strongly increasing its decomposition ability and can be an organic fertilizer for agricultural purposes that reduce ADF and NDF contents through composting. Inadequately managed agricultural waste significantly impacts the environment, health, and economy. This pollution stems from the underutilization, inadequate awareness, and insufficient treatment of agricultural waste. Fruit and vegetable wastes are valuable sources of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to revalorize discarded waste from red habanero chili peppers (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) by extracting bioactive compounds through different extraction processes: maceration (ME), maceration assisted by ultrasound (US), Soxhlet extraction (SE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and supercritical fluid extraction with a co-solvent (SFEC). The extraction processes had significant effects on extraction efficiency and phytochemical profile (capsaicinoids and carotenoids recovery). The results indicated that the highest-efficiency process was SFEC, in addition to its high phytochemicals recovery (14.9 mg of total capsaicinoids and total carotenoids 292.09 µg per gram of sample). Concerning the phytochemical profile of the extract, the maceration process yielded the highest concentration of compounds, followed by US and SFEC. These data reveal that the use of the SFE and SFEC processes is recommended for extracting phytochemicals with biological activity from red habanero chili pepper waste for diverse industrial applications. As a significant source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, the municipal solid waste sector's greenhouse gas emission mode remains unknown, hampering effective decision-making on possible greenhouse gas emission reductions. Rapid urbanization and economic growth have resulted in massive volumes of municipal solid trash. As a result, identifying emission reduction routes for municipal solid waste treatment is critical. In this research, we investigate the potential of municipal solid waste treatment methods in lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Shenzhen, a typical Chinese major city. The results showed that the combined treatment of 58% incineration, 2% landfill, and 40% anaerobic digestion (AD) had the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of about 5.91 million tons under all scenarios. The implementation of waste sorting and anaerobic digestion treatment of organic municipal solid waste after separate collection can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by simply increasing the incineration ratio. The treatment of waste plastics has gradually become a hot topic in the current scientific community. In response to the needs for high-impact performance R-PP-based composites, carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polyolefin elastomer (POE)/recycled polypropylene (R-PP) composite (CF/POE/R-PP) was prepared by the mechanical blending method, and its mechanical and thermal properties were systematically studied. It was found that the CF could effectively improve the bending and notch impact strength as well as enhance the thermal stability of POE/R-PP. Furthermore, a stable and dispersed composite interface formed by the combination of maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with the surface of CF and the fusion alkyl chains in R-PP and POE further enhanced the CF's reinforcing effect. As a result, the addition of 9 wt.% CF successfully improved the heat resistance of the composite material, and the residual carbon content increased by 97.84% after sintering. The composite toughening of POE and CF effectively improved the impact strength of the composite material, with a maximum increase of over 1000%. BiOI microspheres were synthesized using the solvothermal method for the degradation of residual xanthate and gaseous nitric oxide (NO) under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared BiOI nanomaterials were then characterized using various technologies, including XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, and XPS. The photodegradation results show that the removal efficiency of isobutyl sodium xanthate can reach 98.08% at an initial xanthate concentration of 120 mg/L; that of NO is as high as 96.36% at an inlet NO concentration of 11 ppm. Moreover, the effects of operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, initial xanthate concentration, and pH value of wastewater on the removal of xanthate were investigated. The results of scavenging tests and full-spectrum scanning indicate that ·O2− radicals are the main active species in xanthate degradation, and peroxide xanthate is an intermediate. The reusability of BiOI was explored through cyclic experiments. Furthermore, the reaction path and the mechanism of NO removal using BiOI were analyzed, and the main active species was also ·O2−. Urban rehabilitation of brownfields advances cities' resilience and contributes to residents' wellbeing and nature preservation. This article explores the transformation of one such site-Hiriya, once the largest landfill in Israel-into a large metropolitan park. The rebirth of the area, taken to new levels by the design of German landscape architect Peter Latz, combines a regional solution to problems exacerbated by climate change, drainage, and transportation and brings social recovery to neglected neighbourhoods in the southern Tel Aviv metropolis. We argue that the success of Hiriya's transformation was a national-scale event, resulting not only from an evolved Israeli environmental discourse but from parallel processes including a maturing national planning system, a new approach to water and streams, and an overdue national plan for waste treatment problems resulting from threats to vital infrastructures. Using a range of textual and visual documents, the article examines the processes that led to the transformation of Hiriya and looks at how an excellent design turned Hiriya from a brownfield on the outskirts of the cities into a lively, green, functioning space in an urban setting, thereby providing a regional, even a global, model for creating sustainable spaces. Summary: Customer priority for consuming dairy products with intact natural characteristics is leading the food processing trends towards the extensive exploration of non‐thermal technologies. Pulsed electric field (PEF) technique has arisen as a potential and sustainable processing solution. This review discusses the microbial and enzyme inactivation potential of PEF technique in milk and milk products. Alongside its effect on their natural characteristics. Its potential for better probiotic retention in spray‐dried powders, dairy waste treatment and nutrient enrichment application in dairy products has also been highlighted. PEF has demonstrated its effectiveness in ensuring the dairy product's safety with minimal effects on quality parameters. However, these findings are limited to lab and pilot scale level. Due to the acceleration of urbanization, the municipal waste (MW) problem has transformed into a global challenge for urban sustainability. To elucidate historical trends, current focal points, and future directions in MW research, we conducted a bibliometric analysis and employed knowledge graph visualization to scrutinize a total of 34 212 articles, which were published between 1991 and 2021 in the Web of Science (WoS) core database. The results indicated that current major research themes encompass waste classification and recycling, waste management and public behavior, waste disposal methods and technologies, as well as environmental impact and evaluation. There has been a shift in the research focus from the environmental impacts of waste incineration to sustainable management related issues. A comparison of research from six typical countries revealed the differences in research priorities and techniques advantages. Scholars from the USA and Britain initiated MW research earlier than other countries and investigated management issues in depth, such as public behavior and willingness to pay. Meanwhile, Japanese, German, and Swedish scholars conducted extensive studies on advanced waste treatment technologies, such as disposal and recycling, risk assessment, and waste-to-energy techniques. Chinese scholars placed particular emphasis on end-of-pipe treatments and their associated environmental impacts. Hotspots and potential future frontiers were identified by burst detection analysis. Keywords with high value of burst index (BI) worldwide are food waste and circular economy. Chinese scholars have put great efforts on waste environmental impact and its recycling technologies, while we' re expecting to further investigating vulnerable population. Lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE), a promising coolant in advanced nuclear systems, can be activated by neutrons during nuclear reactor operations. The decommissioning of nuclear facilities would generate lead–bismuth (Pb–Bi) alloy‐contaminated nuclear waste. The current metallic nuclear waste treatment approach involves remelting followed by cementitious solidification. This increases the waste volume and the risk of radionuclide migration in groundwater. Therefore, this study developed a method for vitrification of Pb–Bi alloy waste. Different amounts of SiO2 were added at 750–1100°C in the air to turn the simulated LBE waste into glass waste form. The values of the normalized elemental leaching rates (Pb, Bi, Si, Te, and Ni) determined using the 28‐day static leaching test were less than.2 g m−2 d−1 and varied with SiO2 addition. Furthermore, a three‐stage evolution of the glass structure with SiO2 addition was proposed according to the structural analysis performed using Raman and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The evolution stages were as follows: (i) the stage of heavy metal transition from covalent to ionic heavy metals (7.5 wt% < SiO2 < 15 wt%), (ii) the stage of increase in bridging oxygen (15 wt% < SiO2 < 20 wt%), and (iii) the stage of domination of the Si–O network (20 wt% < SiO2 < 25 wt%). The evolution of the glass structure resulted in varying glass chemical durability. Finally, the glass‐forming region of (20–48)PbO–(35–70)Bi2O3–(7.5–25)SiO2 (wt%) and the temperature needed to melt those glasses were determined through the melting test, where radionuclides and toxic heavy metals showed undetectable volatilization during vitrification. In line with the objectives of the circular economy, the conversion of waste streams to useful and valuable side streams is a central goal. Ash represents one of the main industrial side-products, and using ashes in other than the present landfilling applications is, therefore, a high priority. This paper reviews the properties and utilization of ashes of different biomass power plants and waste incinerations, with a focus on the past decade. Possibilities for ash utilization are of uttermost importance in terms of circular economy and disposal of landfills. However, considering its applicability, ash originating from the heat treatment of chemically complex fuels, such as biomass and waste poses several challenges such as high heavy metal content and the presence of toxic and/or corrosive species. Furthermore, the physical properties of the ash might limit its usability. Nevertheless, numerous studies addressing the utilization possibilities of challenging ash in various applications have been carried out over the past decade. This review, with over 300 references, surveys the field of research, focusing on the utilization of biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) ashes. Also, metal and phosphorus recovery from different ashes is addressed. It can be concluded that the key beneficial properties of the ash types addressed in this review are based on their i) alkaline nature suitable for neutralization reactions, ii) high adsorption capabilities to be used in CO 2 capture and waste treatment, and iii) large surface area and appropriate chemical composition for the catalyst industry. Methane is the second largest anthropogenic greenhouse gas, and changes in atmospheric methane concentrations can reflect the dynamic balance between its emissions and sinks. Therefore, the monitoring of CH 4 concentration changes and the assessment of underlying driving factors can provide scientific basis for the government's policy making and evaluation. China is the world's largest emitter of anthropogenic methane. However, due to the lack of ground-based observation sites, little work has been done on the spatial-temporal variations for the past decades and influencing factors in China, especially for areas with high anthropogenic emissions as Central and Eastern China. Here to quantify atmospheric CH 4 enhancements trends and its driving factors in Central and Eastern China, we combined the most up-to-date TROPOMI satellite-based column CH 4 (xCH 4) concentration from 2018 to 2022, anthropogenic and natural emissions, and a random forest-based machine learning approach, to simulate atmospheric xCH 4 enhancements from 2001 to 2018. The results showed that (1) the random forest model was able to accurately establish the relationship between emission sources and xCH 4 enhancement with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.89 and a root mean-square error (RMSE) of 11.98 ppb; (2)The xCH 4 enhancement only increased from 48.21±2.02 ppb to 49.79±1.87 ppb from the year of 2001 to 2018, with a relative change of 3.27%±0.13%; (3) The simulation results showed that the energy activities and waste treatment were the main contributors to the increase in xCH 4 enhancement, contributing 68.00% and 31.21%, respectively, and the decrease of animal ruminants contributed -6.70% of its enhancement trend. The decomposition of municipal organic waste (MOW) results in the generation of gasses and liquid fractions called leachates that may contain high concentrations of organic matter and ammonium (NH4+). Leachates can be treated through biological processes to reduce the environmental problems they cause. Thus, in the present study, the physiology and microbial community of a sequential nitrification-denitrification process (SNDP) were analyzed during MOW leachate treatment. First, the acclimation of nitrifying (SBR with up to 600 mg NH4+-N/L) and denitrifying (UASB reactor with up to 166 mg NO3--N/L d) sludge was carried out. The SBR was then fed with leachate (28.92 ± 13.32–76.26 ± 13.94 mg NH4+-N/L and 5661.69 ± 1002.36–6070.28 ± 554.04 mg COD/L), and the effluent was fed to the UASB reactor. Both processes were completed during acclimation, and efficiencies and yields higher than 92% and 0.89 were obtained, respectively. During the leachate treatment, the SBR reached an ammonium consumption efficiency (ENH4+-N) of 99.01 ± 1.79% and a COD consumption efficiency (ECOD) of 81.62 ± 13.15%. However, the yields and specific production rates of nitrate decreased by 41.0% and 99.8%, respectively. The UASB reactor fed with the SBR effluent (17.68 ± 0.77 mg/L nitrate, 55.20 ± 0.84 mg/L nitrite, and 55.20 ± 0.84–324.86 ± 9.94 mg COD/L) reached nitrate, nitrite, and ECOD efficiencies of 81.53 ± 1.53%, 64.49 ± 1.03%, and 97.42 ± 2.03%, respectively. During acclimation in the nitrifying SBR, the groups that predominated in the microbial community were Nitrospira, Bacteroidetes, Nitrosomonas, and Thauera (25%, 21%, 4%, and 3%, respectively). However, in the presence of leachate, nitrite accumulation and low O2 availability decreased the values of Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas to 0.2% and 0.08%, respectively. In the UASB reactor, members of the family Pseudomonadaceae and the genera Cecembia and Thauera were predominant, regardless of the stage evaluated. Environmental pollution and energy scarcity are the two significant issues that could substantially impede the sustainable growth of our civilization. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging technique for converting the chemical energy of organic wastes directly into electric energy, allowing for both energy recovery and environmental rehabilitation. Solid organic waste decomposition is generally more challenging compared to organic wastewater due to several factors, including the nature of the waste, the decomposition process, and the associated environmental and logistical considerations. With rapid population expansion and acceleration of urbanization, waste generation continues to rise globally, causing complicated environmental, socioeconomic, and energy problems and a growing demand for public health globally. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are promising solid waste management options. However, BES may not be the most effective solution on its own for certain types of waste or may be incapable of treating all waste components. In many circumstances, combining BES with other solid treatment technologies can increase overall treatment efficiency and waste management. Combining BES with other solid treatment methods can have synergistic effects, boosting waste treatment efficiency, resource recovery, and environmental sustainability. However, to guarantee the successful integration and optimization of these combined approaches, site-specific factors, waste characteristics, and system compatibility must be considered. In this paper, coal measure kaolin after flotation decarburization was made into an adsorbent by ball milling and acid modification to absorb methylene blue in water, achieving the treatment of waste with waste. The objective of this paper is to expand the application of coal measure kaolin, reduce its stock, and lower the raw material cost of adsorbents while treating wastewater containing methylene blue. The optimum milling time, acid boiling conditions, and adsorption conditions were investigated. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was investigated by kinetic calculation. The results show that the optimum milling time is 7 h. Relatively good acid modification conditions include a boiling temperature of 100 °C, a stirring time of 135 min, a stirring speed of 1000 r·min−1, and a concentration of hydrochloric acid of 8 mol·L−1. When 0.05 g of flotation kaolin adsorbent was used to adsorb the solution with pH 12 and a methylene blue concentration of 100 mg·L−1, the optimal adsorption conditions were a 38.05 °C adsorption temperature, a 160 r·min−1 stirring speed, and a 31.02 min stirring time. Under these optimal conditions, the adsorption quantity reached 39.92 mg·g−1. The adsorption process involves physical adsorption and spontaneous adsorption. The adsorption type is known as the quasi-second-order adsorption kinetic model. The adsorption form is heterogeneous adsorption in which a monolayer and a multi-molecular layer coexist.
