6. A Story of a Journey in Implementing an E-Assessment System at a South African University

Abstract

Following the challenges faced in the selection and implementation of e-assessment tools for student assessment, I undertook a journey of implementing an e-assessment system within the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). This article describes the path traversed and highlights the potholes and expressways on this road towards e-assessment implementation. Thus, the aim of this article is to present the journey, faced by an academic, in the process of implementing an e-assessment system. This study adopted a narrative inquiry approach. The findings indicate both student and academic acceptance of this form of e-assessment, with students showing particular excitement in this novel assessment mode. This journey serves to highlight the importance of determination, resilience and perseverance in applying a new form of technology within an academic context. Furthermore, support of senior management is also essential to its success. Essentially this article shows that the successful implementation of e-assessment at a university is possible but reliant on motivated academics and institutional buy in.

8. Permafrost dynamics at Mt. Zugspitze from passive seismic monitoring

Abstract

Degradation of mountain permafrost in response to global warming reduces the stability of steep rock slopes, which increases the hazard potential. However, continuous monitoring of permafrost environments remains challenging due to the harsh conditions typically encountered in high Alpine terrain. Here, we present results from passive seismic monitoring of permafrost at Mt. Zugspitze in the German/Austrian Alps. Single-station coda-wave interferometry reveals seasonal freeze-thaw cycles and permafrost degradation over the past 17 years, consistent with modeled velocity changes using temperature logs from a nearby borehole. To constrain the location of these changes, we installed three small seismic arrays along the ridge of Mt. Zugspitze in summer/fall 2021 and exploit the cable car operations at the summit as stationary noise sources for direct wave monitoring between the deployment sites. The results suggest that significant seasonal freeze-thaw cycles associated with permafrost bodies only occur in the western part of the ridge, which is also favored by thermal modeling. To further pinpoint the presence of permafrost, we repeatedly employ distributed acoustic sensing along the ridge, which allows us to sense seismic wave propagation on a meter-scale. In addition to the thermal rock properties, we find that the seismic velocity is sensitive to the presence of cleft water, which may critically contribute to the stability of rock walls. In contrast to more classical methods like borehole temperature logging and electrical resistivity monitoring, seismology combines high temporal resolution and spatial insights over comparatively large areas and thus constitutes a valuable contribution to permafrost monitoring.

Abstract

The large ring laser array ROMY (ROtational Motions in seismologY) consists of four Sagnac inferferometers, each representingan individual, high-sensitive rotation rate sensor, joined as a tetrahedral, heterolithic structure,due to its triangular rings of 12 meter side length.This size and the heterolithic construction introduces new challenges in the operation and monitoring of a large ring laser. Currently high performing ring lasers, such as G-ring, are individual, monolithic large ring lasers, that are less affected by mechanical instability, however, suffer from orientation changes that contribute to the variation in Sagnac frequency. Exploiting the full potential of a large ring laser such as ROMY would enable to observe rotational ground motions close to the rotational low noise model. We discuss required steps towards a stable and enhanced performance of the hetherolicitc ring laser array ROMY, especially for seismology and present implemented tilt and environmental monitoring as well as the influence of the signal processing chain on the obtained signals., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

We provide seismological data from a huddle test in Fürstenfeldbruck in August 2019 that was realized by University of Potsdam (PI: Eva Eibl) in collaboration with BGR (PI: Stefanie Donner) and LMU (PI: Felix Bernauer). 5 rotational sensors (blueSeis-3A) and 3 seismometers (Trillium Horizon 120s Nanometrics) were installed on a decoupled basement in a building of the Geophysical Observatory Fürstenfeldbruck. The seismometers were isolated with black foam rubber and white cotton. We recorded passive seismological data for one week and recorded noise, coherent noise sources and the August 29, 2019 ML 3.4 Dettingen earthquake. The aim of the seismic experiment is to compare the performance of rotational sensors and seismometers with respect to different coherent and incoherent noise sources. The noise level, spectral content of the coherent noise and back azimuth of the Dettingen earthquake was further investigated for all sensors using correlation, coherence analysis and probabilistic power spectral densities in Izgi et al. (2021). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code X3 under CC-BY 4.0 license.

Abstract

Coda-Q is used to estimate the attenuation and scattering properties of the Earth. So far focus has been on earthquake data at frequencies above 1 Hz, as the high noise level in the first and second microseismic peak, and possibly lower scattering coefficient, hinder stable measurements at lower frequencies. In this work, we measure and map coda-Q in the period bands 2.5-5 s, 5-10 s and 10-20 s in the greater Alpine region using noise cross-correlations between station pairs, based on data from permanent seismic stations and from the temporary AlpArray experiment. The observed coda-Q for short interstation distances is independent of azimuth so there is no indication of influence of the directivity of the incoming noise field on our measurements. In the 2.5-5 s and 5-10 s period bands, our measurements are self-consistent, and we observe stable geographic patterns of low and high coda-Q in the period bands 2.5-5 s and 5-10 s. In the period band 10-20 s, the dispersion of our measurements increases and geographic patterns become speculative. The coda-Q maps show that major features are observed with high resolution, with a very good geographical resolution of for example low coda-Q in the Po Plain. There is a sharp contrast between the Po Plain and the Alps and Apennines where coda-Q is high, with the exception a small area in the Swiss Alps which may be contaminated by the low coda-Q of the Po Plain. The coda of the correlations is too short to make independent measurements at different times within the coda, so we cannot distinguish between intrinsic and scattering Q. Measurements on more severely selected data sets and longer time-series result in identical geographical patterns but lower numerical values. Therefore, high coda-Q values may be overestimated, but the geographic distribution between high and low coda-Q areas is respected. Our results demonstrate that noise correlations are a promising tool for extending coda-Q measurements to frequencies lower than those analysed with earthquake data.

Abstract

In this paper a digital numerical simulation is carried out in which active magnetic bearings (AMB) are applied to control nonlinear and nonsynchronous vibrations of a rigid rotor excited by nonconservative cross-coupling mechanisms. Through an adaptive control algorithm of the AMB controller, unknown cross-coupling parameters of a rotor are estimated on-line by a standard least-square estimator along with a time-varying so-called forgetting factor. The parameters of the AMB controller are adapted in order to compensate for the cross-coupling effects and to stabilize the rotor system. Transient cross-coupling response characteristics are calculated by numerical simulation of a rigid rotor supported by two active magnetic bearings. With this kind of control strategy, the stability of the system can be guaranteed for much higher values of cross-coupling coefficients than with common nonadaptive feedback controllers, designed with pole placement or least square algorithms.
