1. Training of Teachers of Migrant Workers' Children.

Abstract

This document discusses the training of teachers of migrant workers' children and outlines a program of basic and specialized training for the teacher. Part 1, an introduction, discusses some trends in the demand for foreign workers in western Europe and problems in education relating to these trends. Part 2 examines teacher education in the host country on three levels: basic, specialized, and additional training. Part 3 presents responses to a Council of Europe questionnaire from emigration and immigration countries regarding the three levels of education mentioned above. Part 4 presents opinions of nursery and primary teachers who have foreign pupils in their classes concerning the shortcomings in their training and suggestions to repair them. Part 5 outlines a teacher education program for teachers of migrant children in the host countries and the emigration countries. (PD)

Abstract

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. Abstract

Theme II of the Ad Hoc Conference on the Education of Migrants was "measures to secure satisfactory educational provision before and during the host country's compulsory schooling period (including specialized and additional training for teachers dealing with migrant workers' children)". This paper briefly discusses this theme. Major topics are: (1) problems arising from the presence of substantial numbers of migrant workers' children in the host country; (2) ways of easing their integration into the host country's educational system; and (3) schemes and projects quoted by way of example and taken from the reports presented by the participating countries. These are divided into before and during compulsory schooling and teacher training in the emigration and host countries. Recommendations presented for consideration by the Standing Conference of European Ministers of Education are given. The appendices include: (1) Resolution No. 3 (1969)--the nursery school and primary school in relation to the demands of educational opportunity for all; and (2) Resolution (70) 35--school education for the children of migrant workers. 8. Effect of Tibial Plateau Leveling on Cranial and Caudal Tibial Thrusts in Canine Cranial Cruciate–Deficient Stifles: An In Vitro Experimental Study

Abstract

To investigate the effect of tibial plateau leveling (TPL) on tibial subluxation and tibial axial rotation; to determine the minimal tibial plateau rotation (MinTPR) angle that provides stifle stability; and to evaluate caudal cruciate ligament (CaCL) strain following tibial plateau rotation in cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL)-deficient stifles.Fifteen canine cadaver hind limbs.Tibial subluxation was measured from lateral radiographs in intact, loaded stifles and after sequential CrCL transection, MinTPR, TPL, and CaCL transection. The MinTPR angle was determined using a custom-made hinge plate and compared with the TPL angle. Tibial axial rotation was evaluated in CrCL-deficient stifles before and after TPL. Finally, CaCL strain was recorded in intact, loaded stifles, and following MinTPR, TPL, and tibial plateau over-rotation (MaxTPR) using a force probe.Cranial tibial subluxation in CrCL-deficient stifles was eliminated with TPL. Tibial plateau rotation, however, induced caudal tibial subluxation, which significantly increased from MinTPR to TPL before and after CaCL transection. The MinTPR angle was 6.5°± 0.9° less than the TPL angle ( P < .05 ). Tibial internal rotation decreased significantly after TPL in CrCL-deficient stifles. Finally, CaCL strain increased with increasing tibial plateau rotation. This study suggests that, during stance phase, TPL transforms cranial tibial thrust into caudal tibial thrust, thereby stabilizing the stifle in the cranio-caudal plane via the constraint of the CaCL. The increase in CaCL stress, which results from tibial plateau rotation, could predispose the CaCL to fatigue failure and therefore would caution against tibial plateau over-rotation.

10. An easier method for percutaneous endoscopic gastrojejunostomy tube placement

Abstract

Background: The current procedures for percutaneous endoscopic gastrojejunostomy (PEG-J) tube placement require fluoroscopy and are time consuming. We describe a new, simple method. Methods: Ten patients had a PEG-J tube placed by the new method. After placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube using standard technique, the PEG tube was pushed up to the pylorus to make it easier to place the jejunal tube into the duodenum without looping in the stomach. Fluoroscopy was not used. The position of the tube was confirmed by a plain x-ray film of the abdomen. Results: The mean time required for PEG placement and jejunal tube placement was 9.0 and 8.2 minutes, respectively. In all patients the tip of the jejunal tube was at the ligament of Treitz. In one patient the jejunal tube formed a loop in the duodenum, but this was reduced by spontaneous forward migration. In another patient, the tube migrated back into the stomach after 1 week. Conclusion: The method described allows easier PEG-J placement without fluoroscopy.

12. An Integrated Quasi-3D Finite Element Calculation Program for Turbomachinery Flows

Abstract

A quasi-3D calculation program based on finite elements is presented in the spirit of Wu’s approach. In this work, however, the flow along the S2 surface is replaced by the calculation of the exact mass averaged-pitch averaged flow in a meridional plane. Extra terms appear in this equation which result from the deviations from axisymmetry and which can be calculated from the knowledge of the blade-to-blade flows. Due to the mass-averaging, these terms represent the only interaction from blade-to-blade S1 surfaces to the meridional flow. The complete program is integrated in a single package requiring only ten percent more computer storage than each of the composing S1 or S2 codes taken alone. The various parts of the program are described as well as the interaction process and specific approximations. Example of calculations compared with experimental data are given, showing good agreement with experimental data.

13. A Finite-Element Method for Through Flow Calculations in Turbomachines

Abstract

A new method for the numerical solution of the meridional through-flow equations in an axial flow machine is presented based on the finite-element method. A rigorous derivation of the pitch-averaged flow equations is presented and the assumption of axisymmetric flow leads, with the introduction of a stream function, to the equation to be solved. A description is given of the finite-element technique which is applied in this problem. The method of solution allows the calculation of transonic stages. Numerical results are compared with experimental data and show very satisfactory agreement. This method appears, therefore, to compare very favorably with the other methods used up to now. Although the present results pertain to axial flow machines, the method is easily applicable to radial flow machines as well and the way of solution for this case is indicated.

14. The solid reaction products of the catalytic decomposition of carbon monoxide on iron at 550°C

Abstract

The catalytic decomposition of carbon monoxide on iron surfaces at 550°C has been studied by optical methods, internal friction measurements, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Carburization of the bulk of the metal takes place by interstitial diffusion of carbon atoms with precipitation of cementite when the solution becomes supersaturated; this affects the mechanical stability of the metal. Two types of carbon are generally found on the surface of the samples after exposure to CO. The first is a lamellar form of carbon located close to the metal surface and arising probably from decomposing Fe3C crystals in the surface. The second is a filamentous form which originates from small crystals of a particular iron carbide epitaxially grown on the surface of metal grains. These small crystals also develop on the surface of decomposing Fe3C crystals. X-ray diffraction studies show this iron carbide to be Fe7C3. Electron microscopy of the carbon filaments shows a small crystal of Fe7C3which acts as a growth centre for each filament. The decomposition of CO is catalyzed by iron as well as by Fe7C3. Cementite does probably not catalyze the reaction.

20. Congenital unilateral cleft of the soft palate in six dogs

Abstract

Unilateral cleft of the soft palate occurs sporadically in dogs, and there are few reports in the veterinary literature regarding its aetiology and management. This report describes six dogs with the condition. The dogs' primary presenting problem was rhinitis. The defects were successfully repaired using a two‐layer closure technique with absorbable suture in five of the cases. Surgical correction was not performed in the remaining case.

Abstract

We report the results of endoscopic photocoagulation in the treatment of villous adenomas of the rectum in 49 consecutive patients (26 males, and 23 females, mean age: 74 years). Twenty-six patients were treated with a high-power Nd-Yag laser (80 W/sec). After a mean of 3.4 laser sessions, all the small-sized adenomas (C1) and 88% of the intermediate-sized adenomas (C2) were healed. No extensive villous adenoma (C3) could be eradicated. Complications occurred in 5 patients. Recurrence was observed in 3 C2 patients who are still on maintenance laser therapy. Twenty-three patients were treated with another Nd-Yag laser (maximal power output: 45 W/sec). After a mean of 6.4 laser sessions, 85% of the C1 patients were healed, while eradication of villous tissues was obtained in 60% of C2 and C3 patients. No complications were noted. A recurrence was observed in three C1 patients with secondary healing after reinstitution of laser therapy in 2 cases. Moreover, two C3 patients also relapsed and laser eradication was again obtained in 1 patient. In conclusion, these results confirm the efficacy of laser therapy in small- and intermediate-sized villous adenomas of the rectum. The number of laser sessions required for eradicating a villous tumour was lower using a high-power Nd: Yag laser, but the risk of complications was increased.

30. Single dose ranitidine: influence of the time of administration on gastric acidity in normal subjects and in patients with duodenal ulcer.

Abstract

Using ambulatory 24 hour pH monitoring, intragastric acidity was measured in 6 healthy volunteers and 8 patients with duodenal ulcer. According to a latin square design each patient was randomly assigned to receive placebo, 300 mg ranitidine at 19.00 h or 300 mg ranitidine at 22.00 h, on three separate occasions. Validation of the method was achieved by comparing the values indicated by the intragastric electrode and the pH of simultaneously aspirated gastric juice (y = 0.87x + 0.66, r = 0.93). Comparing the area under the curve of intragastric hydrogen ion activity, as well as the percent of time less than pH 5, we found a better inhibition of nocturnal acidity (20.00 h-08.00 h) with 19.00 h ranitidine than with ranitidine administered at 22.00 h (p less than 0.01). By contrast, there was no significant difference in diurnal acidity between both ranitidine regimens and placebo.
