Abstract: Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract: The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators. Observations of γ-rays with energies up to 1.4 PeV find that 12 sources in the Galaxy are PeVatrons, one of which is the Crab Nebula.

3. Diurnal Dips and Forbush Decreases in Galactic Cosmic Rays Observed at High Cutoff Rigidity

Abstract: A Forbush decrease (FD) is the decrease in Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux, e.g., as observed by a neutron monitor count rate, in association with a coronal mass ejection (CME) and/or its shock. The FD amplitude is known to decrease at higher cutoff rigidity. During Solar Cycle 24, the Mawson neutron monitor in Antarctica, with a low (atmosphere-limited) cutoff rigidity of ~1 GV, observed numerous FDs, while the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor (PSNM) located near the Earth's equator at Doi Inthanon, Thailand, with the world’s highest geomagnetic cutoff rigidity (17 GV), observed only a fraction of these as FDs. Instead, we find that the shock arrival is often followed by repeated dips in the PSNM count rate at only certain times of day, while the GCR flux from other directions remains near the pre-shock level. We refer to decreases of this type as diurnal dips. In this work, we have surveyed FDs and diurnal dip events observed by PSNM and the dependence of their maximum amplitude on the solar wind speed, ICME speed, and interplanetary magnetic field. 4. Extended Cosmic Ray Decreases with Strong Anisotropy after Passage of Interplanetary Shocks

Abstract: The passage of an interplanetary shock and/or interplanetary coronal mass ejection often causes a rapid decrease in the Galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) flux, known as a Forbush decrease, followed by a recovery of the flux over some days. These local effects are of short duration and strongly rigidity dependent, with higher-rigidity particles exhibiting much weaker effects. In contrast, we present data for two events in which the cosmic-ray flux gradually decreased for about 1 week after shock passage, then recovering over the following week, with the highest anisotropy levels observed throughout Solar Cycle 24. These extended decreases have a weak rigidity dependence and are much more prominent in observations at higher cutoff rigidity, where the initial Forbush decrease is not clearly detected and other variations are generally weak, as we demonstrate using data from the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor at Doi Inthanon, Thailand with a cutoff rigidity of about 17 GV. We propose that these extended decrease events were initiated upon the passage of an interplanetary shock that inhibited the inflow of GCRs along the interplanetary magnetic field, possibly due to magnetic mirroring at the shock. We also discuss the general behavior of GCR anisotropy as observed at this high cutoff rigidity.

Abstract: Using a setup for testing a prototype for a satellite-borne cosmic-ray ion detector, we have operateda stack of scintillator and silicon detectors on top of the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor(PSNM), an 18-counter NM64 detector at 2560-m altitude at Doi Inthanon, Thailand. Monte Carlosimulations have indicated that about 15% of the neutron counts by PSNM are due to interactions(mostly in the lead producer) of GeV-range protons among the atmospheric secondary particlesfrom cosmic ray showers, which can be detected by the scintillator and silicon detectors. Detectionof incoming charged particles associated with neutron counts in the NM64 allows a measurementof the travel time distribution of such neutrons as they scatter and propagate through the NM64,processes that are nearly the same whether the interaction was initiated by an energetic proton (for15% of the count rate) or neutron (for 80% of the count rate). This travel time distribution underliesthe time delay distribution between successive neutron counts, from which we can determine theleader fraction (inverse multiplicity), which has been used to monitor Galactic cosmic ray spectralvariations over∼1-40 GV. In the present experiment we have measured both the coincidence rateof incident charged shower particles with neutron counts in the NM64 and the neutron travel timedistribution. We utilize these measurements to validate Monte Carlo simulations of atmosphericsecondary particle detection by the NM64 and the resulting yield functions used to interpret thecount rate and the leader fraction.

Abstract: We report the discovery of a new unidentified extended $\gamma$-ray source in the Galactic plane named LHAASO J0341+5258 with a pre-trial significance of 8.2 standard deviations above 25 TeV. The best fit position is R.A.$=55.34^{\circ}\pm0.11^{\circ}$ and Dec$=52.97^{\circ}\pm0.07^{\circ}$. The angular size of LHAASO J0341+5258 is $0.29^\circ \pm 0.06^\circ_{stat} \pm0.02^\circ_{sys}$. The flux above 25 TeV is about $20\%$ of the flux of Crab Nebula. Although a power-law fit of the spectrum from 10 TeV to 200 TeV with the photon index $\alpha=2.98 \pm 0.19_{stat} \pm 0.02_{sys}$ is not excluded, the LHAASO data together with the flux upper limit at 10 GeV set by the Fermi LAT observation, indicate a noticeable steepening of an initially hard power-law spectrum %($\alpha \leq 1.75$) spectrum with a cutoff at $\approx 50$ TeV. We briefly discuss the origin of UHE gamma-rays. The lack of an energetic pulsar and a young SNR inside or in the vicinity of LHAASO J0341+5258 challenge, but do not exclude both the leptonic and hadronic scenarios of gamma-ray production., Comment: Accepted by APJL

Abstract: The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the primary instrument for the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view, high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from 30 MeV to more than 300 GeV. We describe the performance of the instrument at the 10-year milestone. LAT performance remains well within the specifications defined during the planning phase, validating the design choices and supporting the compelling case to extend the duration of the Fermi mission. Abstract: The main scientific goal of the LHAASO WFCTA experiment is to measure the cosmic ray energy spectra and composition from 10 TeV to 1 EeV. Cherenkov photons in the extensive air shower measured by the SiPM camera of Cherenkov telescopes can be used to reconstruct the cosmic ray energy. The absolute calibration of the camera is a crucial step to achieve the accurate measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum. A multi-wavelength cylindrical illuminator based on LEDs is developed and mounted inside the telescope to calibrate and monitor the camera, and the illuminator’s stability is better than 0.5% under the temperature variation from -26 to 26 ° C. A portable probe with a single photoelectron resolution of 21.6% is developed. After calibration by National Institute of Metrology, China (NIM), the probe is taken to the LHAASO site to measure the absolute photon density of the cylindrical illuminator inside the telescope. Based on the illuminator with known photon density, the photon conversion factor of the camera can be calibrated, and the overall calibration uncertainty is less than 2.6%.

Abstract: The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is a major component of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Array Observatory (LHAASO), a new generation cosmic-ray experiment with unprecedented sensitivity, currently under construction. The WCDA is aimed at the study of TeV $\gamma$-rays. In order to evaluate the prospects of searching for TeV $\gamma$-ray sources with the WCDA, we present in this paper a projection for the one-year sensitivity of the WCDA to TeV $\gamma$-ray sources from TeVCat (footnote: http://tevcat.uchicago.edu) using an all-sky approach. Out of 128 TeVCat sources observable to the WCDA up to a zenith angle of $45^\circ$, we estimate that 42 would be detectable for one year of observations at a median energy of 1 TeV. Abstract: We present an update on the analysis of cross-counter time-delay histograms with 5 μs bins as recorded since late 2015 in the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor, an 18NM64 (with 18 counter tubes in a continuous row) at 2560 m altitude in Doi Inthanon, Thailand. A cross-counter relative leader fraction $L_{ij}$ can be defined as the fraction of pulses measured in counter number $i$ that are uncorrelated in time with the most recent pulse in counter $j$. For low tube separation, $L_{ij}$ rapidly increases with increasing tube separation $|i-j|$, as expected from the spatial spreading of neutrons produced by the same atmospheric secondary particle inside the neutron monitor. At high tube separation, $L_{ij}$ increases slowly with increasing tube separation and remains different from unity, which we interpret as due to multiple atmospheric secondaries arriving in rapid succession after originating from the same primary cosmic ray. We study temporal variations of the cross-counter relative leader fraction at large tube separation ($|i-j|>6$, or roughly more than 3 m) and analyze the possible contribution of atmospheric effects to the data.

Abstract: The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has amassed a large data set of primary cosmic-ray protons throughout its mission. The LAT's wide field of view and full-sky survey capabilities make it an excellent instrument for studying cosmic-ray anisotropy. As a space-based survey instrument, the LAT is sensitive to anisotropy in both right ascension and declination, while ground-based observations only measure the anisotropy in right ascension. We present the results of the first ever proton anisotropy search using Fermi LAT. The data set uses eight years of data and consists of approximately 179 million protons above 78 GeV, enabling it to probe dipole anisotropy below an amplitude of $10^{-3}$, resulting in the most stringent limits on the declination dependence of the dipole to date. We measure a dipole amplitude $\delta = 3.9\pm1.5 \times 10^{-4}$ with a p-value of 0.01 (pre-trials) for protons with a minimum energy of 78 GeV. We discuss various systematic effects that could give rise to a dipole excess and calculate upper limits on the dipole amplitude as a function of minimum energy. Abstract: Black holes with masses below approximately $10^{15}$ g are expected to emit gamma rays with energies above a few tens of MeV, which can be detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Although black holes with these masses cannot be formed as a result of stellar evolution, they may have formed in the early Universe and are therefore called Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). Previous searches for PBHs have focused on either short timescale bursts or the contribution of PBHs to the isotropic gamma-ray emission. We show that, in case of individual PBHs, the Fermi LAT is most sensitive to PBHs with temperatures above approximately 16 GeV and masses $6\times 10^{11}$ g, which it can detect out to a distance of about 0.03 pc. These PBHs have a remaining lifetime of months to years at the start of the Fermi mission. They would appear as potentially moving point sources with gamma-ray emission that becomes spectrally harder and brighter with time until the PBH completely evaporates. In this paper, we develop a new algorithm to detect the proper motion of a gamma-ray point sources, and apply it to 318 unassociated point sources at high galactic latitude in the third Fermi-LAT source catalog (3FGL). None of unassociated point sources with spectra consistent with PBH evaporation show significant proper motion. Using the non-detection of PBH candidates, we derive a 99\% confidence limit on PBH evaporation rate in the vicinity of the Earth $\dot{\rho}_{\rm PBH} < 7.2 \times 10^3\: {\rm {pc}^{-3} {yr}^{-1}}$. This permits extending the well-known concept of multiplicity (multiple correlated counts in one detector) to what we refer to as `cross multiplicity' or correlation of counts in one detector with those in another. At present, the data are recorded as cross-counter time-delay histograms with 5-$\mu$s bins. A cross-counter relative leader fraction $L_{ij}$ can be defined as the fraction of pulses measured in counter number $i$ that are uncorrelated in time with the next pulse in counter $j$. For simplicity, we derive average cross-counter leader fractions $L_\Delta$ with $\Delta=|i-j|$ as a function of counter tube separation, from a tube separation $\Delta=0$ (i.e., using the same tube) to $\Delta=17$. For low tube separation, $L_\Delta$ rapidly increases with increasing $\Delta$, as expected from the spatial spreading of neutrons produced by the same atmospheric secondary particle inside the neutron monitor. At high tube separation, $L_\Delta$ increases slowly with increasing $\Delta$ and remains different from unity, which we interpret as due to multiple atmospheric secondaries arriving in rapid succession after originating from the same primary cosmic ray.

Abstract: Solar modulation refers to Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) variations with the $\sim$11-year sunspot cycle and $\sim$22-year solar magnetic cycle, and is relevant to the space radiation environment and effects on Earth's atmosphere. Its complicated dependence on solar and heliospheric conditions is only roughly understood but has been empirically modeled in terms of a single modulation parameter. Most analyses of solar modulation used neutron monitor (NM) data from locations with relatively low geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, i.e., the threshold for cosmic rays to penetrate Earth's magnetic field. The Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor (PSNM) at Doi Inthanon, Thailand has the highest cutoff rigidity ($\approx$17 GV) where observations span a complete solar modulation cycle (since late 2007). The pattern of solar modulation at Doi Inthanon during 2011-2014 was qualitatively very different from that at low geomagnetic cutoff, and is not well described by the same modulation parameter. Abstract: We have been continuously observing the daily Be-7 concentrations at Bangkok in Thailand ($13.765^\circ$ N, $100.526^\circ$ E) since June 2014 to investigate the relationship between solar activities and the variation of cosmogenic nuclides in low latitude. The Be-7 concentrations show a clear seasonal variation with the high and low concentrations during January to May and June to December, respectively, for each year. In order to understand the seasonal variations, we calculated back trajectories of air mass by HYSPLIT. The calculation indicates that the back trajectories are distinguished three patterns in a year, which are "Indian Ocean trajectories", "Continental trajectories", and "Pacific Ocean trajectories". Moreover, we estimated monthly amount of Be-7 coming to Bangkok for each trajectories by EXPACS. From these findings, the amount of Be-7 is high during Continental and Pacific Ocean trajectories. On the other hand, one is low during Indian Ocean trajectories. This phase of calculated Be-7 can explain the seasonal variation. Comparing this phase and the phase of observed Be-7 concentrations, there is a time lag of one or two months.

Abstract: The Fermi LAT has opened the way for comparative studies of cosmic rays (CRs) and high-energy objects in the Milky Way (MW) and in other, external, star-forming galaxies. Using 2 yr of observations with the Fermi LAT, local Group galaxy M31 was detected as a marginally extended gamma-ray source, while only an upper limit (UL) has been derived for the other nearby galaxy M33. We revisited the gamma-ray emission in the direction of M31 and M33 using more than 7 yr of LAT Pass 8 data in the energy range 0.1-100 GeV, presenting detailed morphological and spectral analyses. M33 remains undetected and we computed an UL for it. This revised UL remains consistent with the observed correlation between gamma-ray luminosity and star-formation rate tracers and implies an average CR density in M33 that is at most half of that of the MW. M31 is detected with a significance of nearly 10 sigma and to be extended with 4 sigma. Its spectrum is consistent with a power law. The spatial distribution of the emission is consistent with a uniform disk with a radius of 0.4 deg and no offset from the center of M31, but nonuniform intensity distributions cannot be excluded. The flux from M31 appears confined to the inner regions of the galaxy and does not fill the disk or extend far from it. The gamma-ray signal is not correlated with regions rich in gas or star-formation activity suggesting that the emission is not interstellar in origin, unless the energetic particles radiating in gamma rays do not originate in recent star formation. Alternative and nonexclusive interpretations are that the emission results from a population of millisecond pulsars dispersed in the bulge and disk of M31 by disrupted globular clusters or from the decay or annihilation of dark matter particles, similar to what has been proposed to account for the so-called Galactic Center excess found in Fermi-LAT observations of the MW., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The region around the Galactic center (GC) is now well established to be brighter at energies of a few GeV than expected from conventional models of diffuse gamma-ray emission and catalogs of known gamma-ray sources. We study the GeV excess using 6.5 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We characterize the uncertainty of the GC excess spectrum and morphology due to uncertainties in cosmic-ray source distributions and propagation, uncertainties in the distribution of interstellar gas in the Milky Way, and uncertainties due to a potential contribution from the Fermi bubbles. We also evaluate uncertainties in the excess properties due to resolved point sources of gamma rays. The Galactic center is of particular interest as it would be expected to have the brightest signal from annihilation of weakly interacting massive dark matter particles. However, control regions along the Galactic plane, where a dark-matter signal is not expected, show excesses of similar amplitude relative to the local background. Based on the magnitude of the systematic uncertainties, we conservatively report upper limits for the annihilation cross section as function of particle mass and annihilation channel., Comment: Contact authors: A. Abstract: We present a catalog of sources detected above 10 GeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in the first 7 years of data using the Pass 8 event-level analysis. This is the Third Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL), containing 1556 objects characterized in the 10 GeV - 2 TeV energy range. The sensitivity and angular resolution are improved by factors of 3 and 2 relative to the previous LAT catalog at the same energies (1FHL). The vast majority of detected sources (79%) are associated with extragalactic counterparts at other wavelengths, including 16 sources located at very high redshift ($z>2$). Eight percent of the sources have Galactic counterparts and 13% are unassociated (or associated with a source of unknown nature). The high-latitude sky and the Galactic plane are observed with a flux sensitivity of 4.4 to 9.5$\times 10^{-11}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, respectively (this is approximately 0.5% and 1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 10 GeV). The catalog includes 214 new $\gamma$-ray sources. The substantial increase in the number of photons (more than 4 times relative to 1FHL and 10 times to 2FHL) also allows us to measure significant spectral curvature for 32 sources and find flux variability for 163 of them. Furthermore, we estimate that for the same flux limit of $10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, the energy range above 10 GeV has twice as many sources as above 50 GeV, highlighting the importance, for future Cherenkov telescopes, of lowering the energy threshold as much as possible., Comment: Accepted by ApJS. Abstract: We report on the Fermi-LAT detection of high-energy emission from the behind-the-limb (BTL) solar flares that occurred on 2013 October 11, and 2014 January 6 and September 1. The Fermi-LAT observations are associated with flares from active regions originating behind both the eastern and western limbs, as determined by STEREO. All three flares are associated with very fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and strong solar energetic particle events. We present updated localizations of the >100 MeV photon emission, hard X-ray (HXR)and EUV images, and broadband spectra from 10 keV to 10 GeV, as well as microwave spectra. We also provide a comparison of the BTL flares detected by Fermi-LAT with three on-disk flares and present a study of some of the significant quantities of these flares as an attempt to better understand the acceleration mechanisms at work during these occulted flares. We interpret the HXR emission to be due to electron bremsstrahlung from a coronal thin-target loop top with the accelerated electron spectra steepening at semirelativistic energies. The >100 MeV gamma-rays are best described by a pion-decay model resulting from the interaction of protons (and other ions) in a thick-target photospheric source. The protons are believed to have been accelerated (to energies >10 GeV) in the CME environment and precipitate down to the photosphere from the downstream side of the CME shock and landed on the front side of the Sun, away from the original flare site and the HXR emission., 13 pages, 14 figures published on ApJ

Abstract: International audience; The spatial extension of a γ-ray source is an essential ingredient to determine its spectral properties, as well as its potential multiwavelength counterpart. The capability to spatially resolve γ-ray sources is greatly improved by the newly delivered Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 event-level analysis, which provides a greater acceptance and an improved point-spread function, two crucial factors for the detection of extended sources. Here, we present a complete search for extended sources located within 7° from the Galactic plane, using 6 yr of Fermi-LAT data above 10 GeV. We find 46 extended sources and provide their morphological and spectral characteristics. This constitutes the first catalog of hard Fermi-LAT extended sources, named the Fermi Galactic Extended Source Catalog, which allows a thorough study of the properties of the Galactic plane in the sub-TeV domain.

Abstract: We present results from $\gamma$-ray observations of the Coma cluster incorporating six years of Fermi-LAT data and the newly released "Pass 8" event-level analysis. Our analysis of the region reveals low-significance residual structures within the virial radius of the cluster that are too faint for a detailed investigation with the current data. Using a likelihood approach that is free of assumptions on the spectral shape we derive upper limits on the $\gamma$-ray flux that is expected from energetic particle interactions in the cluster. We also consider a benchmark spatial and spectral template motivated by models in which the observed radio halo is mostly emission by secondary electrons. In this case, the median expected and observed upper limits for the flux above 100 $\mathrm{MeV}$ are 1.7 × $10^{−9} ph$ $cm^{−2} s^{−1}$ and 5.2 × $10^{−9} ph$ $cm^{−2} s^{−1}$ respectively (the latter corresponds to residual emission at the level of 1.8$\sigma$). These bounds are comparable to or higher than predicted levels of hadronic gamma-ray emission in cosmic-ray (CR) models with or without reacceleration of secondary electrons, although direct comparisons are sensitive to assumptions regarding the origin and propagation mode of CRs and magnetic field properties. The minimal expected $\gamma$-ray flux from radio and star-forming galaxies within the Coma cluster is roughly an order of magnitude below the median sensitivity of our analysis.

Abstract: Physical review letters 116(15), 151105(2016). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.116.151105, The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Collaboration has recently released a catalog of 360 sources detected above 50 GeV (2FHL). This catalog was obtained using 80 months of data re-processed with Pass 8, the newest event-level analysis, which significantly improves the acceptance and angular resolution of the instrument. Most of the 2FHL sources at high Galactic latitude are blazars. Using detailed Monte Carlo simulations, we measure, for the first time, the source count distribution, dN/dS, of extragalactic γ-ray sources at E>50 GeV and find that it is compatible with a Euclidean distribution down to the lowest measured source flux in the 2FHL (∼8×10$^{−12}$ ph cm$^{−2}$ s$^{−1}$). We employ a one-point photon fluctuation analysis to constrain the behavior of dN/dS below the source detection threshold. Overall, the source count distribution is constrained over three decades in flux and found compatible with a broken power law with a break flux, Sb, in the range [8×10$^{−12}$,1.5×10$^{−11}$] ph cm$^{−2}$ s$^{−1}$ and power-law indices below and above the break of $\alpha_2$∈[1.60,1.75] and $\alpha_1$=2.49±0.12, respectively. Integration of dN/dS shows that point sources account for at least 86$^{+16}_{−14}$% of the total extragalactic γ-ray background. The simple form of the derived source count distribution is consistent with a single population (i.e., blazars) dominating the source counts to the minimum flux explored by this analysis. Abstract: The astrophysical journal 819(1), 44 (2016). doi:10.3847/0004-637X/819/1/44, The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has provided the most detailed view to date of the emission toward the Galactic center (GC) in high-energy γ-rays. This paper describes the analysis of data taken during the first 62 months of the mission in the energy range 1–100 GeV from a 15° × 15° region about the direction of the GC. Specialized interstellar emission models (IEMs) are constructed to enable the separation of the γ-ray emissions produced by cosmic ray particles interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation fields in the Milky Way into that from the inner ~1 kpc surrounding the GC, and that from the rest of the Galaxy. A catalog of point sources for the 15° × 15° region is self-consistently constructed using these IEMs: the First Fermi-LAT Inner Galaxy Point Source Catalog (1FIG). The spatial locations, fluxes, and spectral properties of the 1FIG sources are presented, and compared with γ-ray point sources over the same region taken from existing catalogs. After subtracting the interstellar emission and point-source contributions a residual is found. If templates that peak toward the GC are used to model the positive residual the agreement with the data improves, but none of the additional templates tried account for all of its spatial structure. The spectrum of the positive residual modeled with these templates has a strong dependence on the choice of IEM., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. [u.a.]

Abstract: The astrophysical journal 826(1), 1 (2016). doi:10.3847/0004-637X/826/1/1, We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope detection of extended γ-ray emission from the lobes of the radio galaxy Fornax A using 6.1 years of Pass 8 data. After Centaurus A, this is now the second example of an extended γ-ray source attributed to a radio galaxy. Both an extended flat disk morphology and a morphology following the extended radio lobes were preferred over a point-source description, and the core contribution was constrained to be $\lt 14$% of the total γ-ray flux. A preferred alignment of the γ-ray elongation with the radio lobes was demonstrated by rotating the radio lobes template. We found no significant evidence for variability on ~0.5 year timescales. Taken together, these results strongly suggest a lobe origin for the γ-rays. With the extended nature of the $\gt 100\;{\rm{MeV}}$ γ-ray emission established, we model the source broadband emission considering currently available total lobe radio and millimeter flux measurements, as well as X-ray detections attributed to inverse Compton (IC) emission off the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Unlike the Centaurus A case, we find that a leptonic model involving IC scattering of CMB and extragalactic background light (EBL) photons underpredicts the γ-ray fluxes by factors of about ~2–3, depending on the EBL model adopted. An additional γ-ray spectral component is thus required, and could be due to hadronic emission arising from proton–proton collisions of cosmic rays with thermal plasma within the radio lobes., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. Abstract: We have measured the gamma-ray emission spectrum of the Moon using the data collected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite during its first 7 years of operation, in the energy range from 30 MeV up to a few GeV. We have also studied the time evolution of the flux, finding a correlation with the solar activity. We have developed a full Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of cosmic rays with the lunar surface. The results of the present analysis can be explained in the framework of this model, where the production of gamma rays is due to the interactions of cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei with the surface of the Moon. 32. Distinct Pattern of Solar Modulation of Galactic Cosmic Rays above a High Geomagnetic Cutoff Rigidity.

Abstract: Solar modulation refers to Galactic cosmic-ray variations with the ∼11 yr sunspot cycle and ∼22 yr solar magnetic cycle and is relevant to the space radiation environment and effects on Earth’s atmosphere. Its complicated dependence on solar and heliospheric conditions is only roughly understood and has been empirically modeled in terms of a single modulation parameter. Most analyses of solar modulation use neutron monitor (NM) data from locations with relatively low geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, i.e., the threshold for cosmic rays to penetrate Earth’s magnetic field. The Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor at Doi Inthanon, Thailand, has the world’s highest cutoff rigidity (≈17 GV) where observations span a complete solar modulation cycle (since late 2007). The pattern of solar modulation at Doi Inthanon during 2011–2014 was qualitatively very different from that at a low geomagnetic cutoff and is not well described by the same modulation parameter. At other times, NM count rates from Doi Inthanon and McMurdo, Antarctica (cutoff ∼1 GV), were linearly correlated and confirm the observation from latitude surveys in the previous solar cycle that the slope of the correlation changes with solar magnetic polarity. Low solar magnetic tilt angles (<40° at negative polarity) were well correlated with variations at both NM stations, as predicted by drift models. At a higher tilt angle, the Doi Inthanon count rate is well correlated with the interplanetary magnetic field, which is consistent with an increase in diffusion at high rigidity short-circuiting the effects of drifts and the heliospheric current sheet.
