Introduction: This article seeks to explore tacit knowledge in the context of the practice and the role of a dental educator in a workplace learning environment. Material and Methods: The key theoretical ideologies which underpin the definition of tacit knowledge have been outlined and practical examples to enable conceptualisation. The role tacit knowledge plays in procedural knowledge, performance of a skill and diagnosis and decision‐making has been explained in further detail. Approaches to maximise the educational output of learning opportunities by using tacit knowledge and how an awareness of tacit knowledge can complement reflection have been considered. Results: It is acknowledged that workplace learning is of mutual benefit to the dental educator, trainee and clinical team and that the development of the educator to make tacit knowledge explicit, can be achieved through peer observation, amongst other methods. Conclusion: Tacit knowledge is a key element underpinning learning in the workplace; the use of this knowledge can be applied in an advantageous manner, from both an educational and a personal developmental perspective. In the placental vasculature, where oxygenation may be an important regulator of vascular reactivity, there is a paucity of data on the expression of potassium (K) channels, which are important mediators of vascular smooth muscle tone. We therefore addressed the expression and function of several K channel subtypes in human placentas. The expression of voltage-gated (Kv)2.1, Kv9.3, large-conductance [Ca.sup.2+]-activated K channel (B[K.sub.ca]), inward-rectified [K.sup.+] channel ([K.sub.IR])6.1, and two-pore domain inwardly rectifying potassium channel-related acid-sensitive K channels (TASK)I in chorionic plate arteries, veins, and placental homogenate was assessed by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Functional activity of K channels was assessed pharmacologically in small chorionic plate arteries and veins by wire myography using 4-aminopyridine, iberiotoxin, pinacidil, and anandamide. Experiments were performed at 20, 7, and 2% oxygen to assess the effect of oxygenation on the efficacy of K channel modulators. Kv2.1, Kv9.3, B[K.sub.ca], [K.sub.IR]6.1, and TASK1 channels were all demonstrated to be expressed at the message level. Kv2.1, B[K.sub.Ca], [K.sub.IR]6.1, and TASK1 were all demonstrated at the protein level. Pharmacological manipulation of voltage-gated and ATP-sensitive channels produced the most marked modifications in vascular tone, in both arteries and veins. Divalent metal transporter1 (DMT1; also known as DCT1 or NRAMP2) is an important component of the cellular machinery responsible for dietary iron absorption in the duodenum. DMT1 is also highly expressed in the kidney where it has been suggested to playa role in urinary iron handling. In this study, we determined the effect on renal DMT1 expression of feeding an iron-restricted diet (50 mg/kg) or an iron-enriched diet (5 g/kg) for 4 wk and measured urinary and fecal iron excretion rates. Feeding the low-iron diet caused a reduction in serum iron concentration and fecal iron output rate with an increase in renal DMT1 expression. Feeding an iron-enriched diet had the converse effect. Therefore, DMT1 expression in the kidney is sensitive to dietary iron intake, and the level of expression is inversely related to the dietary iron content. Changes in DMT1 expression occurred intracellularly in the proximal tubule and in the apical membrane and subapical region of the distal convoluted tubule. Increased DMT1 expression was accompanied by a decrease in urinary iron excretion rate and vice versa when DMT1 expression was reduced. Experiments were performed to study the reabsorption of potassium in the surface proximal convoluted tubules (PCT) of kidneys from rats. The microperfusion method with rubidium-86 as transport marker was the selected technique. The factors considered in the potassium reabsorption were convection, diffusion and active transport. Results revealed that the permeability of the PCT was not dependent on the fluid reabsorption elimination. Potassium transport permeability was adequately evaluated through effective use of the rubidium-86 as a marker.
