Fe + (acetylene) n ion-molecule complexes are produced in a supersonic molecular beam with pulsed laser vaporization. These ions are mass selected and studied with infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the C-H stretching region, complemented by computational chemistry calculations. All C-H stretch vibrations are shifted to frequencies lower than the vibrations of isolated acetylene because of the charge transfer that occurs between the metal ion and the molecules. Complexes in the size range of n = 1-4 are found to have structures with individual acetylene molecules bound to the core metal ion via cation-π interactions. The coordination is completed with four ligands in a structure close to a distorted tetrahedron. Larger complexes in the range of n = 5-8 have external acetylene molecules solvating this n = 4 core ion via CH-π bonding to inner-shell ligands. DFT computations predict that quartet spin states are more stable for all complex sizes, but infrared spectra for quartet and doublet spin states are quite similar, precluding definitive determination of the spin states. There is no evidence for any of these complexes having acetylenes coupled into reacted structures. This is consistent with computed thermochemistry, which finds significant activation barriers to such reactions.

Understanding the factors that contribute to fish impairment and survival from angling events is essential to guide best angling practices for catch-and-release (C&R) recreational fisheries. Complex interactions often exist between angler behaviour, environmental conditions, and fish characteristics that ultimately determine biological outcomes for fish. Yet, few studies focus on identifying biologically relevant thresholds. We therefore examined the effects of water temperature, air exposure and fish size on reflex impairment and mortality in brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis exposed to experimental and simulated angling stressors ( n  = 337). Using conditional inference trees, we identified interactions among these factors as well as threshold values within them that determine brook trout reflex impairment as an indicator of whole animal stress. Specifically, longer air exposure times (>30 sec) and warmer temperatures (>19.5°C) had a synergistic effect leading to higher reflex impairment scores. Further, larger fish (>328 mm) were more sensitive to air exposure durations >10 sec. Of the reflex impairment measures, loss of equilibrium and time to regain equilibrium were strongly and moderately associated with brook trout mortality (18-24 h monitoring), although mortality rates were generally low (6%). These findings support previous research that has established strong links between these reflex impairment measures and fish health outcomes in other species. They also highlight the important interactions among air exposure duration, water temperature and fish size that determine impairment in brook trout, providing specific thresholds to guide best angling practices for C&R fisheries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, incidence rates for dental diseases will continue unabated. However, the intent to prevent the spread of this lethal respiratory disease will likely lead to reduced treatment access due to restrictions on population movements. These changes have the potential to increase dental-related emergency department visits and subsequently contribute to greater viral transmission. Moreover, dentists experience unique challenges with preventing transmission due to frequent aerosol-producing procedures. This paper presents reviews and protocols implemented by directors and residents at the Dental College of Georgia to manage a dental emergency clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic. The methods presented include committee-based prioritization of dental patients, a multilayered screening process, team rotations with social and temporal spacing, and modified treatment room protocols. These efforts aid in the reduction of viral transmission, conservation of personal protective equipment, and expand provider availability. Introduction: Copper poisoning is associated with severe multiorgan injury and potentially death if chelation therapy is not administered. Of interest, while important gastrointestinal and urinary tract hemorrhage is associated with copper poisoning, very little is known concerning the nature of copper induced coagulopathy., Methods: Using thrombelastography, we assessed changes in coagulation kinetics in human plasma following exposure to copper concentrations encountered during poisoning., Results: While time to commence coagulation was not compromised, both velocity of thrombus growth and final strength were diminished. This result was duplicated with one concentration of copper in factor XIII deficient plasma. This pattern of coagulation kinetic response was interpreted as copper mediated fibrinogen dysfunction, perhaps via oxidation of key fibrinogen disulfide bridges. Lastly, experiments wherein glutathione was added implicated copper generated radical oxygen species as one of the mechanisms responsible for compromised coagulation kinetics., Conclusions: While chelation therapy is the key to survival following copper poisoning, perhaps this and future investigations of how copper affects coagulation may provide insight into effective supportive therapy for patients with active bleeding.

The purpose of the current study was to explore resilience in senior-level baccalaureate nursing students. Twenty-seven participants completed an online questionnaire assessing three stressors that pertained to marriage or divorce, death or loss of family members or close friends, and extreme financial hardship in the past 1 year. Resilience was measured using the 25-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25) and one open-ended question about the experience of resilience. Mean CD-RISC-25 score was 73.26 (SD = 10.7; range = 45 to 96); only 33.3% of the sample was considered resilient (score >80). Qualitative data described academic stressors and support resources for resilience. Study findings underscore the relevance of resilience in nursing students. Nurse educators must help nursing students develop resilience to better prepare them for academic success and ensure a smooth transition into their professional nursing role. Sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) coupled with balanced removal of sodium ions via Na + , K + -ATPase is a major determinant of cellular homeostasis and intracellular ionic concentration. Interestingly, many metastatic carcinomas express high levels of these channels. We hypothesized that if excess VGSCs are activated and Na + , K + -ATPase is simultaneously blocked, the intracellular Na + concentration should increase, resulting in water movement into the cell, causing swelling and lytic cell death. MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells over-express VGSCs by 7-fold. To test our hypothesis, we treated these cells in vitro with the Na + , K + -ATPase blocker, ouabain, and then stimulated with a sublethal electric current. For in vivo histologic and survival studies, MDA-MB-231 xenografts were established in Nu/J mice. Mice injected with saline or ouabain were electrically stimulated with trains of 10 msec 10V DC pulses. Within seconds to minutes, the cells swelled and lysed. MCF-10a cells, which express normal VGSCs levels, were unaffected by this treatment. Cells from the weakly-malignant cell line, MCF-7, which express 3-fold greater VGSCs than MCF-10a cells, displayed an intermediate time-to-lysis. The rate of lysis correlated directly with the degree of sodium channel expression and malignancy. We also demonstrated efficacy in cell lines from prostate, colon and lung carcinomas. Treated MDA-MB-231 xenografts showed 60-80% cell death. In survival studies, TOL-treated mice showed significantly slower tumor growth vs. controls. The taste receptor type 1 (TAS1R) family of heterotrimeric G protein-coupled receptors participates in monitoring energy and nutrient status. TAS1R member 3 (TAS1R3) is a bi-functional protein that recognizes amino acids such as L-glycine and L-glutamate or sweet molecules such as sucrose and fructose when dimerized with TAS1R member 1 (TAS1R1) or TAS1R member 2 (TAS1R2), respectively. It was recently reported that deletion of TAS1R3 expression in Tas1R3 mutant mice leads to increased cortical bone mass but the underlying cellular mechanism leading to this phenotype remains unclear. Here, we independently corroborate the increased thickness of cortical bone in femurs of 20-week-old male Tas1R3 mutant mice and confirm that Tas1R3 is expressed in the bone environment. Tas1R3 is expressed in undifferentiated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) in vitro and its expression is maintained during BMP2-induced osteogenic differentiation. However, levels of the bone formation marker procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP) are unchanged in the serum of 20-week-old Tas1R3 mutant mice as compared to controls. In contrast, levels of the bone resorption marker collagen type I C-telopeptide are reduced greater than 60% in Tas1R3 mutant mice. Consistent with this, Tas1R3 and its putative signaling partner Tas1R2 are expressed in primary osteoclasts and their expression levels positively correlate with differentiation status. Collectively, these findings suggest that high bone mass in Tas1R3 mutant mice is due to uncoupled bone remodeling with reduced osteoclast function and provide rationale for future experiments examining the cell-type-dependent role for TAS1R family members in nutrient sensing in postnatal bone remodeling.

Despite many similarities and intuitive links between individual dietary specialization and behavioral inter-individual variation, these phenomena have been studied in isolation, and empirical data confirming relationships between these intraspecific variance sources are lacking. Here we use stable isotope analysis and acoustic telemetry to test the hypothesis that individual specialization in trophic (δ 15 N) and littoral/pelagic prey reliance (δ 13 C) covary with inter-individual variation in movement in a group of 34 free-swimming burbot (Lota lota). By performing stable isotope analysis on tissues with differing isotopic turnover rates (anal fin and dorsal muscle), in 24 lethally sampled burbot, we demonstrate that individual specialization in trophic niche (δ 15 N) and littoral/pelagic prey reliance (δ 13 C) occurred within the population. By performing stable isotope analysis on anal fins of a group of telemetry tagged burbot, we were able to show that interactions between trophic niche and littoral/pelagic prey reliance, explained a significant proportion of the subsequent between-individual variance in mean movement rates. Critical thinking is essential in the practice of the nurse generalist, today. Nursing faculty is frequently trying to identify teaching strategies in promoting critical thinking and engaging students in active learning. To close the gap between critical thinking and student success, a school in the south east United States implemented the use of the 'think like a nurse initiative" for incoming junior nursing students. Faculty collaborated to adopt the fundamental and essential nursing concepts for nursing students to support thinking like a nurse.

Ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management (EAFMs) have emerged as requisite for sustainable use of fisheries resources. At the same time, however, there is a growing recognition of the degree of variation among individuals within a population, as well as the ecological consequences of this variation. Managing resources at an ecosystem level calls on practitioners to consider evolutionary processes, and ample evidence from the realm of fisheries science indicates that anthropogenic disturbance can drive changes in predominant character traits (e.g. size at maturity). Eco-evolutionary theory suggests that human-induced trait change and the modification of selective regimens might contribute to ecosystem dynamics at a similar magnitude to species extirpation, extinction and ecological dysfunction. Given the dynamic interaction between fisheries and target species via harvest and subsequent ecosystem consequences, we argue that individual diversity in genetic, physiological and behavioural traits are important considerations under EAFMs. Here, we examine the role of individual variation in a number of contexts relevant to fisheries management, including the potential ecological effects of rapid trait change. Using select examples, we highlight the extent of phenotypic diversity of individuals, as well as the ecological constraints on such diversity. We conclude that individual phenotypic diversity is a complex phenomenon that needs to be considered in EAFMs, with the ultimate realization that maintaining or increasing individual trait diversity may afford not only species, but also entire ecosystems, with enhanced resilience to environmental perturbations. Put simply, individuals are the foundation from which population- and ecosystem-level traits emerge and are therefore of central importance for the ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management.

Affective domain teaching and learning can facilitate the reduction of stigmatization of clients with mental illness in nursing students. Experiential learning activities such as simulation are regarded as an effective method for facilitating student learning in the affective domain. The project reported here measured the impact of a simulation experience, "Hearing Voices Which Are Distressing," on attitudes, values, and beliefs of accelerated baccalaureate students caring for clients with mental illness who experienced hearing voices.

There is a high incidence of comorbid substance use in the bipolar population. Co-occurring substance use in this population increases negative outcomes and changes the illness presentation. Currently there is a lack of insight into the lived experience of adults with bipolar disorder and comorbid substance abuse. This descriptive phenomenological study describes and enhances the understanding of what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and comorbid substance used disorder. The data were collected using face-to-face in-depth interviews. Six distinctive themes were developed and validated by the descriptions of the experiences of the participants. The six themes that emerged from analysis of formulated meanings were: (1) Life is Hard; (2) Feeling the Effects; (3) Trying to Escape; (4) Spiritual Support; (5) Being Pushed Beyond the Limits; and (6) A Negative Connotation. All the themes came from the interconnection of bipolar disorder and substance use disorder. This study has implications for nursing practice, research, and education. If nursing and health care professionals understand the problem as these patients' perceive it, management of mood swings and relapses from periods of sobriety along with selection of treatment modalities will be improved.

Purpose: The induction of polyamine catabolism has been directly associated with the cytotoxic response of various tumor types to the antitumor polyamine analogues. Initially, human polyamine catabolism was assumed to be under the control of a rate-limiting spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT) that provides substrate for an acetylpolyamine oxidase (PAO). We have recently cloned a new polyamine analogue-inducible human polyamine oxidase (PAOh1/SMO) that efficiently uses spermine as a substrate. The induction of PAOh1/SMO in response to multiple polyamine analogues was examined in representative lung tumor cell lines., Methods: Representatives of three different classes of antitumor polyamine analogues were examined for their ability to induce PAOh1/SMO., Results: The human adenocarcinoma line, NCI A549 was found to be the most responsive line with respect to induction of PAOh1/SMO in response to analogue exposure. Similar to previous observations with SSAT expression, PAOh1/SMO induction was found to occur primarily in non-small-cell lung cancers cell lines. Using a series of polyamine analogues, it was found that the most potent inducers of PAOh1/SMO possessed multiple three-carbon linkers between nitrogens, as typified by N1,N11-bis(ethyl)norspermine., Conclusions: Since PAOh1/SMO is an analogue-inducible enzyme that produces H2O2 as a metabolic product, it may play a significant role in determining the sensitivity of various human tumors to specific polyamine analogues.

The synthesis of symmetric and asymmetric piperazinyl-linked dimers of the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics is described. Specific dimers are shown to possess potent antibacterial activity against drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including strains possessing resistance due to the NorA multidrug efflux pump and a mutation in the quinolone resistance-determining region of topoisomerase IV.

A single blind crossover study with washout phases showed that pyrazinoylguanidine (PZG) reduced elevated serum concentrations of urea, triglycerides, and cholesterol in patients with renal insufficiency. Pyrazinoylguanidine was saluretic, without affecting serum potassium or glucose concentrations. The onset of PZG's antihypertensive effect occurred within 4 hours. In contrast, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) increased serum concentrations of urea, triglycerides, and glucose, without affecting cholesterol.
