6. Large sensitivity to freshwater forcing location in 8.2ka simulations

Abstract

The 8.2ka event is a key test case for simulating the coupled climate response to changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Recent advances in quantifying freshwater fluxes at 8.2ka from the proxy record have improved the realism of the forcing magnitude in model simulations, yet this forcing is still generally applied in an unrealistic geographic manner, across most of the Labrador Sea rather than just along the Labrador coast. Previous simulations with eddy- resolving ocean models have come to conflicting conclusions regarding the ability of such a coastally confined flow to impact the AMOC. These simulations have also not incorporated full atmosphere models nor have they used the new meltwater forcing values for 8.2ka. We use the Community Climate System Model, version 3, with an ocean model resolution only slightly coarser than that used in previous eddy-resolving simulations, to test the sensitivity to freshwater forcing location. When revised freshwater forcing is applied across the Labrador Sea, the AMOC is reduced by similar to 40% and climate anomalies compare well with proxy records of the 8.2ka event in terms of magnitude and duration. When the forcing is added just along the Labrador coast, however, most meltwater joins the subtropical gyre and travels to the subtropics with minor impact to the AMOC (similar to 10% decrease). It is likely that model biases in the placement of the North Atlantic Current remain an important limitation for correctly simulating the 8.2ka event.

Abstract

Semiaquatic muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) are in decline throughout their native range. We report on the environmental and behavioural mechanisms responsible for a half‐century of muskrat decline in a model system floodplain region of the Peace–Athabasca Delta ("Delta"). Using the Landsat satellite record, trapping and population survey records, and ecological field studies of muskrat, we develop conceptual and quantitative models to investigate mechanisms driving muskrat population decline at Egg Lake, an archetypal Delta region. Simulation results show processes occurring over nested timescales control population decline: Multidecadal drying has diminished shoreline habitat, and inter‐annual shoreline habitat deterioration resulted from excessive herbivory by muskrat thereby exacerbating their die‐off. Simulations without herbivory feedback show peak population values up to 73% higher than simulations with herbivory. Simulation results also suggest that trapping is not the primary cause of declines in muskrat abundance. The process model highlights factors responsible for long‐term decline and rapid die‐off, providing insights into mechanisms for observed muskrat population decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Primary concerns for successful inclusion

Abstract

Research on inclusion was important in order to develop successful inclusion practices, which could then be utilized in new inclusion classrooms. The purpose of this study was to learn about successful inclusion practices which included, but were not limited to, positive attitudes, supports, collaborative teaching, team-teaching, teacher training, materials and resources, and curricular modifications. The subjects of this study were a purposive sampling of the regular and special education teaching staff, as well as teaching aides and administrators who were directly involved in an inclusive classroom setting in the Galloway Township Public School District during the school year 2003-2004. Data for this research was gathered by creating an inclusion survey using a Likert scale format as well several unstructured questions. The surveys were then sent to the buildings in the district having had inclusion during the school year 2003-2004. Thirty-five surveys were sent and twenty-nine surveys were returned. The majority of respondents felt that teacher compatibility was the most essential component for successful inclusion. Teacher compatibility was followed by positive attitudes towards people with disabilities and teacher training. When participants had the opportunity to select all the components listed on the survey, the majority felt all were equally important.
