Abstract Malaria remains one of the highest causes of morbidity and mortality, with 249 million cases and over 608,000 deaths in 2022. Insecticides, which target the Anopheles mosquito vector, are the primary method to control malaria. The widespread nature of resistance to the most important insecticide class, the pyrethroids, threatens the control of this disease. To reverse the stall in malaria control there is urgent need for new vector control tools, which necessitates understanding the molecular basis of pyrethroid resistance. In this study we utilised multi-omics data to identify uridine-diphosphate (UDP)-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) potentially involved in resistance across multiple Anopheles species. Phylogenetic analysis identifies sequence similarities between Anopheline UGTs and those involved in agricultural pesticide resistance to pyrethroids, pyrroles and spinosyns. Expression of five UGTs was characterised in An. gambiae and An. coluzzii to determine constitutive over-expression, induction, and tissue specificity. Furthermore, a UGT inhibitor, sulfinpyrazone, restored susceptibility to pyrethroids and DDT in An. gambiae, An. coluzzii, An. arabiensis and An. funestus, the major African malaria vectors. Taken together, this study provides clear association of UGTs with pyrethroid resistance as well as highlighting the potential use of sulfinpyrazone as a novel synergist for vector control.

Due to technical progress in sensor technology and computer power, observation and model data are operationally available today with a high spatial and temporal resolution, suitable for thunderstorm detection and prediction. However, nowcasting the remaining lifetime of an observed thunderstorm is still a challenge to date. To improve nowcasting of deep convective cells, we developed the algorithm LOC-lifetime that predicts the remaining lifetime of thunderstorms based on life-cycle signatures present in satellite, radar, lightning and numerical weather prediction model data. We use the mathematical method “fuzzy logic” to combine this multi-source input and to categorize the thunderstorm evolution into the life-cycle sets growth and decay. We analyzed a data set of almost 1,800 thunderstorms that occurred during the summer months June 2016, May, June, July 2017 and June 2018. The data reveal highly variable life cycles which make it difficult to predict the remaining lifetime on basis of life-cycle statistics. Nevertheless, LOC-lifetime offers an improved nowcasting quality compared to a simpler nowcasting method as it increases the probability of correct prediction and reduces the root-mean-square error. Therefore, we propose the lifetime prediction via LOC-lifetime as a useful tool in combination with other existing algorithms to nowcast and forecast thunderstorms.

Cold fronts provide an environment particularly favourable for convective initiation in the mid-latitudes and can also be associated with convective hazards such as flooding, wind, hail and lightning. We build a climatology of cold-frontal convective cells between 2007–2016 for April–September in a cell-front distance framework by combining a radar-based cell detection and tracking dataset and automatic front detection methods applied to reanalysis data. We find that on average around twice as many cells develop on cold-frontal cell days compared to non-cold-frontal cell days. Using the 700 hPa level as a reference point, we show the maximum cell frequency is 350–400 km ahead of the 700 hPa front, which is marginally ahead of the typical surface front location. The 700 hPa front location marks the minimum cell frequency and a clear shift in regime between cells, with a weakened diurnal cycle on the warm side of the 700 hPa cold front and strongly diurnally driven cells on the cold side of the 700 hPa front. High cell frequency is found several hundreds of kilometres ahead of the surface front, and cells in this region are most likely to be associated with mesocyclones, intense convective cores and lightning. Namely, mesocyclones were detected in around 5.0 % of pre-surface-frontal cells compared to only 1.5 % of non-cold-frontal cells. The findings in this study are an important step towards a better understanding of cold-frontal convection climatology and links between cold fronts and convective hazards.

Photovoltaic-heat pump (PV-HP) combinations with battery and energy management systems are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to increase the autarchy and utilization of self-generated PV electricity. This trend is driven by the ongoing electrification of the heating sector and the growing disparity between growing electricity costs and reducing feed-in tariffs in Germany. Smart control strategies can be employed to control and optimize the heat pump operation to achieve higher self-consumption of PV electricity. This work presents the evaluation results of a smart-grid ready controlled PV-HP-battery system in a single-family household in Germany, using 1-minute-high-resolution field measurement data. Within 12 months evaluation period, a self-consumption of 43 % was determined. The solar fraction of the HP amounts to 36 %, enabled also due to higher set temperatures for space heating and domestic hot water production. Accordingly, the SPF decreases by 4.0 % the space heating and by 5.7 % in the domestic hot water mode. The combined seasonal performance factor for the heat pump system increases from 4.2 to 6.7, when only considering the electricity taken from the grid and disregarding the locally generated electricity supplied from photovoltaic and battery units.

Renovation of existing buildings is fundamental to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the building sector and to ensure the efficient operation of renewable heating systems. In multi-family houses, the suitability of heat pumps is limited by high required temperatures for the hot water preparation, which can be mitigated by hybrid heat pump systems. In this study, the energetic performance of a hybrid heat pump in a multi-family house, built in 1964, is investigated based on field data before and after a renovation. Multiple months are measured and mapped to a full year period. The combination of different renovation measures in the heating system and building envelope is rated w.r.t. their ecological and economical impact by taking into account the actual investment costs. The evaluation shows that the installation of a hybrid heat pump can achieve an accumulated greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 45%, which is similar to a building renovation to a new-build standard, which reduces the space heating demand by up to 62%. Nevertheless, only a combination of both measures can substantially reduce the emissions, which in this case are 81% lower compared to a gas boiler in 1990, which is still below the German climate target for 2040. Due to the low investment costs of a hybrid heat pump system, tenants are more likely to profit from a renting costs reduction, while a building renovation is especially economically beneficial at high energy prices. The results therefore emphasize that the insulation level should be selected carefully, as heat pumps already prepare space heating efficiently and that the heat pump must be able to support the hot water preparation to reach high emission reduction targets.

Tornadic storms with a tornado intensity of F2 or stronger on the Fujita scale that occurred in recent years (between 2013 and 2020) in Germany were analysed in detail. The 20 tornadoes, which developed on 17 different days, occurred in various parts of Germany. The majority of the analysed tornadoes occurred from May to early September. The other four events are typical cold-season cases that differ from the warm-season cases in some aspects which are discussed where applicable. Similarities and differences of the prevailing synoptic and mesoscale conditions are assessed in addition to the convective environment of the events. On the majority of the analysed tornadic days, the event happened on the forward flank of a long wave trough that was slowly propagating eastward. The second typical situation is a short wave trough passing rather fast over the area of interest from West to East. All cold-season cases occurred in high shear, low CAPE environments. Furthermore, the type of convection is analysed using a multi-source approach to best characterise the events. For this purpose, radar reflectivity and rotation data were combined with lightning detection in order to analyse the tornadic storms with respect to storm mode and storm evolution as well as lightning and rotation characteristics. The most common convective mode is linearly organised convection followd by multicellular storms. In many of the warm-season cases, radar radial wind data showed a persistent rotation track. The lightning activity of the warm-season season tornadic storms was high. In many cases, a lightning jump occurred between 5 and 120 minutes before the event.

Abstract The increasing impact of severe weather over Europe on lives and weather‐sensitive economies can be mitigated by accurate 0–6 h forecasts (nowcasts), supporting a vital ‘last line of defence’ for civil protection and many other applications. Recognizing lack of skill in some complex situations, often at convective and local sub‐kilometre scales and associated with rare events, we identify seven recommendations with the aim to improve nowcasting in Europe by the national meteorological and hydrological services (NMHSs) by 2030. These recommendations are based on a review of user needs, the state of the observing system, techniques based on observations and high‐resolution numerical weather models, as well as tools, data and infrastructure supporting the nowcasting community in Europe. Denser and more accurate observations are necessary particularly in the boundary layer to better characterize the ingredients of severe storms. A key driver for improvement is next‐generation European satellite data becoming available as of 2023. Seamless ensemble prediction methods to produce enhanced weather forecasts with 0–24 h lead times and probabilistic products require further development. Such products need to be understood and interpreted by skilled forecasters operating in an evolving forecasting context. We argue that stronger co‐development and collaboration between providers and users of nowcasting‐relevant data and information are key ingredients for progress. We recommend establishing pan‐European nowcasting consortia, better exchange of data, common development platforms and common verification approaches as key elements for progressing nowcasting in Europe in this decade.

In this paper we present and verify the non-linear simulation of an aspherical adaptive lens based on a piezo-glass sandwich membrane with combined bending and buckling actuation. To predict the full non-linear piezoelectric behavior, we measured the non-linear charge coefficient, hysteresis and creep effects of the piezo material and inserted them into the FEM model using a virtual electric field. We further included and discussed the fabrication parameters -- glue layers and thermal stress -- and their variations. To verify our simulations, we fabricated and measured a set of lenses with different geometries, where we found good agreement and show that their qualitative behavior is also well described by a simple analytical model. We finally discuss the effects of the geometry on the electric response and find, e.g., an increased focal power range from $\pm 4.5$ to $\pm 9\, \mathrm{m}^{-1}$ when changing the aperture from $14$ to $10\, \mathrm{mm}$., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, final version published in Smart Materials and Structures

Diffraction-limited focusing deep into biological tissue is challenging due to spherical aberrations that lead to a broadening of the focal spot particularly in axial direction. While the diffraction-limit can be restored employing aberration correction with a deformable mirror or spatial light modulator, a bulky optical setup results due to the required beam-folding. We propose a bi actor adaptive lens, that enables axial scanning and at the same time correction of specimen induced spherical aberrations while offering a compact setup. Using the bi-actor lens in a confocal microscope, we show diffraction limited axial scanning up to \SI{340}{\micro m} deep inside a phantom specimen. Applying this technique for in-vivo measurements of zebrafish embryos with reporter gene-driven fluorescence in the thyroid gland reveals substructures of thyroid follicles.

In this paper, we compare the performance of 8 PZT ceramics and one PMN-PT material for typical bending actuator applications. This includes the measurement of non-linear transverse charge coefficient at high electric field strength and related quantities such as the Young's modulus, relative permittivity, coercive field and their temperature dependencies, and the Curie temperature. Most materials show much higher strains than what is expected from the datasheet values. We further study the operating region for fields against the polarization direction in different operating cycles and demonstrate a long-term stable quick re-poling method which increases the operating range of negative-only cycles from 50% of Ec to 75% of the coercive field., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, to be submitted to journal

We present an adaptive lens which tunes its focal length with a glass membrane that is deformed by an integrated piezo bending actuator. A particular challenge in the fabrication of this type of actuator is the need to contact the electrodes on both sides of the piezo element, i.e. also on the glass surface. Therefore, we show a novel contacting method where the top electrode on the piezo is segmented and the backside electrode is left at a floating potential. With this setup we achieve tuning capabilities of more than 13 dpt and response times in the range of less than 4 ms at a usable aperture of 4.5 mm., Comment: To be presented at ACTUATOR 2016, 15th International Conference on New Actuators: http://www.actuator.de

We present the prototype and analytical model of a miniaturized impact actuation mechanism, providing a fast out-of-plane displacement to accelerate objects against gravity, allowing for freely moving objects and hence for large displacements without the need for cantilevers. To achieve the necessary high speed, we chose a piezoelectric stack actuator driven by a high-current pulse generator, connected to a rigid support and a rigid three-point contact with the object. We describe this mechanism with a spring-mass model and compare various spheres with different masses and diameters and from different materials. As expected, we found that larger flight heights are achieved by harder spheres, achieving, e.g., approx. 3 mm displacement for a 3 mm steel sphere using a 3 × 3 × 2 mm3 piezo stack.

We demonstrate a method for self-sensing of a magnetically actuated prism that can be used, e.g., in a feedback-loop without the need of additional sensors. In order to use the impedance of the actuation coils as a measurement parameter, we first obtained the optimal measurement frequency that is well separated from the actuation frequencies and at the same time provides the best compromise between sensitivity to the position and robustness. We then developed a combined actuation and measurement driver, and correlated its output signal to the mechanical state of the prism using a defined calibration sequence. We demonstrate that we can reliably measure the state of each actuator and determine the tilt angle of the prism with an accuracy of ±0.1∘ in the polar angle over a range of ±4∘ and ±20 mrad in the azimuthal angle.

In this paper, we present the proof of concept of a very fast adaptive glass membrane lens with a large aperture/diameter ratio, spherical aberration correction and integrated actuation. The membrane is directly deformed using two piezo actuators that can tune the focal length and the conical parameter. This operating principle allows for a usable aperture of the whole membrane diameter. Together with the efficient actuation mechanism, the aperture is around 2/3 of the total system diameter - at a thickness of less than 2mm. This study analyses characteristics of deep moist convection (DMC) over Germany with the aim to select relevant parameters that have the skill to improve the identification of current life cycle phase and the forecast of a lifetime of DMCs in an operational weather forecasting environment. No differentiation between thunderstorm organization types is done, since no simple differentiation method is available in an operational environment. In contrast to previous analyses, multiple data sources are used synchronously to explore an extensive data set of DMCs at high resolution in space and time. Basis of our analysis are all DMC detections in satellite data (using Cb‑TRAM – Thunderstorm Tracking and Monitoring) in a five month period (June 2016, May/June/July 2017, and June 2018). For each of these DMCs the time series of selected parameters from satellite, ground-based radar, lightning detection, and numerical weather prediction (NWP) model data are inspected. In search for clear signatures of expectable lifetime and differences between short- and long-lived DMCs, all thunderstorm systems are sorted by their lifetime. In addition, they are separated into four life cycle phases: 1. early growth, 2. advanced growth, 3. maturity, and 4. decay. Generally, it turns out that satellite, radar, and lightning data are the most suitable data to determine the actual life cycle phase of a DMC. It is shown that long-lived DMCs are, on average, related to lower minimum cloud top temperature and mid-level relative humidity and higher maximum of coverage area, vertically integrated water and lightning activity during their life cycle than short-lived systems. The NWP model parameters have a diagnostic potential to identify the remaining lifetime in connection with the observational data, but do not contain information about the actual life cycle phase. The results obtained in this study will be used for an investigation of their potential application in a nowcasting model, in order to determine the current phase of an observed DMC and to predict its remaining lifetime.

We present a controlled mode of "topological" displacement of homogeneous piezo films that arises solely from an inhomogeneous in-plane strain due to an inhomogeneous polarization. For the rotationally symmetric case, we develop a theoretical model that analytically relates the shape of the displacement to the polarization for the cases of in-plane and out-of-plane polarization. This is verified for several examples, and we further demonstrate controlled asymmetric deformations.

We present a new type of tunable mirror with sharply-featured freeform displacement profiles, large displacements of several 100\mu m and high operating frequencies close to the kHz range at 15mm diameter. The actuation principle is based on a recently explored "topological" displacement mode of piezo sheets. The prototypes presented here include a rotationally symmetric axicon, a hyperbolic sech-icon and a non-symmetric pyram-icon and are scalable to smaller dimensions. The fabrication process is economic and cleanroom-free, and the optical quality is sufficient to demonstrate the diffraction patterns of the optical elements.

We present a method to produce in-plane polarized piezo films with a freely adjustable ratio of the strains in orthogonal in-plane directions. They can be used in piezo bending actuators with a tunable curvature profile. The strains are obtained as mean strains from a periodic polarization pattern produced by a suitable doubly interdigitated electrode structure. This mechanism is demonstrated for several examples using PZT sheets. We study physical properties of strongly coupled massive quantum liquids from their spectral functions using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The generic model that we consider is dense, heavy fundamental matter coupled to SU(N_c) super Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature above the deconfinement phase transition but below the scale set by the baryon number density. In this setup, we study the current-current correlators of the baryon number density using new techniques that employ a scaling behavior in the dual geometry. Our results, the AC conductivity, the quasi-particle spectrum and the Drude-limit parameters like the relaxation time are simple temperature-independent expressions that depend only on the mass-squared to density ratio and display a crossover between a baryon- and meson-dominated regime. We concentrated on the (2+1)-dimensional defect case, but in principle our results can also be generalized straightforwardly to other cases., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, extra paragraph and figure are added in response to referee's comments

We study a defect system of two parallel D5 probe branes in a large-N_c D3 background. Using the non-abelian DBI action, we study three different fields that can give rise to a superconducting phase transition: A vector (p-wave), a scalar corresponding to a non-trivial "separation"' of the branes in the (3+1) field theory directions and a scalar corresponding to a separation in the "internal" S^5 (both s-wave). Comparing these phases first in the \alpha'^2 expansion, we find that the internal scalar has the largest critical temperature and is always thermodynamically preferred. Further, there is an interesting attractor behavior. Taking a simplified version of the full DBI action that preserves its regularity and geometry, we find that the divergences of the \alpha'^2 expansion are resolved and some second order transitions turn into first order ones. In addition to some other changes of the phase diagram due to the structure of the DBI action, we observe that the ground state degeneracy of the unbroken theory is lifted. We also isolate the unphysical artifacts of our simplification., Comment: 35 pages, 27 figures; fixed typos, added reference, minor structural changes and re-phrasings, final version to be published in JHEP

We explore the small-temperature regime in the deconfined phase of massive fundamental matter at finite baryon number density coupled to the 3+1 dimensional N=4 SYM theory. In this setting, we can demonstrate a new type of non-trivial temperature-independent scaling solutions for the probe brane embeddings. Focusing mostly on matter supported in 2+1 dimensions, the thermodynamics indicate that there is a quantum liquid with interesting density-dependent low-temperature physics. We also comment about 3+1 and 1+1 dimensional systems, where we further find for example a new thermodynamic instability., Comment: 18+1 pages, 6 figures; replaced fig. 6 and comments in sec. 5.2; minor explanations added and typos fixed, final version published in JHEP (modulo fig. 3); factor of \sqrt{\lambda} and corresponding comments fixed

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the thermodynamic properties and the phase diagram of matter fields on (2+1)-dimensional defects coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional N=4 SYM "heat bath". Considering a background magnetic field, (net) quark density, defect "magnitude" $\delta N_c$ and the mass of the matter, we study the defect contribution to the thermodynamic potentials and their first and second derivatives to map the phases and study their physical properties. We find some features that are qualitatively similar to other systems e.g. in (3+1) dimensions and a number of features that are particular to the defect nature, such as its magnetic properties, unexpected properties at T->0 and finite density; and the finite $\delta N_c$ effects, e.g. a diverging susceptibility and vanishing density of states at small temperatures, a physically consistent negative heat capacity and new types of consistent phases., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures (jpg and pdf), typos fixed and references added, final version published in JHEP

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the anisotropic charge transport properties of both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric matter fields on (2+1)-dimensional defects coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional N=4 SYM "heat bath". We focus on the cases of a finite external background magnetic field, finite net charge density and finite mass and their combinations. In this context, we also discuss the limitations due to operator mixing that appears in a few situations and that we ignore in our analysis. At high frequencies, we discover a spectrum of quasi-particle resonances due to the magnetic field and finite density and at small frequencies, we perform a Drude-like expansion around the DC limit. Both of these regimes display many generic features and some features that we attribute to strong coupling, such as a minimum DC conductivity and an unusual behavior of the "cyclotron" and plasmon frequencies, which become related to the resonances found in the conformal case in an earlier paper. We further study the hydrodynamic regime and the relaxation properties, from which the system displays a set of different possible transitions to the collisionless regime. The mass dependence can be cast in two regimes: a generic relativistic behavior dominated by the UV and a non-linear hydrodynamic behavior dominated by the IR. In the massless case, we furthermore extend earlier results from the literature to find an interesting self-duality under a transformation of the conductivity and the exchange of density and magnetic field., Comment: 76 pages, 45 figures (jpg and pdf), IJMPA style; section on operator mixing and references added, typos fixed, final version published in IJMPA

We study the charge transport properties of fields confined to a (2+1)-dimensional defect coupled to (3+1)-dimensional super-Yang-Mills at large-$\nc$ and strong coupling, using AdS/CFT techniques applied to linear response theory. The dual system is described by $\nf$ probe D5- or D7-branes in the gravitational background of $\nc$ black D3-branes. Surprisingly, the transport properties of both defect CFT's are essentially identical -- even though the D7-brane construction breaks all supersymmetries. We find that the system possesses a conduction threshold given by the wave-number of the perturbation and that the charge transport arises from a quasiparticle spectrum which is consistent with an intuitive picture where the defect acquires a finite width. We also examine finite-$\lambda$ modifications arising from higher derivative interactions in the probe brane action., Comment: 54 pages, 22 figures, references added, minor changes to figures and comments, final version published in JHEP

Unrenovated multifamily houses in Germany are mostly heated by fossil heat generators; therefore, measures are required for CO2 emission reduction. The use of air–water heat pumps is restricted by high required flow temperatures and heat output but can be mitigated by hybrid heat pumps. To limit additional operation costs by the heat pump, a new operation strategy is introduced in this study, which allows to maintain a target CO2 emission. The operation strategy is applied in a field trial in a small unrenovated multifamily house built in 1964. A thermohydraulic simulation model is verified and is used in full-year simulations to apply improvement measures and compare the new control strategy with existing optimizing strategies. The results show that the control onto target emissions is possible and limits additional costs but can also result in higher CO2 mitigation costs, making it less favorable. The hybrid heat pump reduces the direct fossil CO2 emissions by 61% (in total by 22%); thus, it is a relevant solution for multifamily houses, especially within a further decarbonized electrical grid.

We describe how to recover the quantum numbers of extremal black holes from their near horizon geometries. This is achieved by constructing the gravitational Noether-Wald charges which can be used for non-extremal black holes as well. These charges are shown to be equivalent to the U(1) charges of appropriately dimensionally reduced solutions. Explicit derivations are provided for 10 dimensional type IIB supergravity and 5 dimensional minimal gauged supergravity, with illustrative examples for various black hole solutions. We also discuss how to derive the thermodynamic quantities and their relations explicitly in the extremal limit, from the point of view of the near-horizon geometry. We relate our results to the entropy function formalism., Comment: 25 pages; references and comments added, typos fixed, minor changes to notation, minor clarifications in the discussions; final version published in CQG

We present the development of a dual-mode imaging platform that combines optical microscopy with magnetic resonance microscopy. Our microscope is designed to operate inside a 9.4T small animal scanner with the option to use a 72mm bore animal RF coil or different integrated linear micro coils. With a design that minimizes the magnetic distortions near the sample, we achieved a field inhomogeneity of 19 ppb RMS. We further integrated a waveguide in the optical layout for the electromagnetic shielding of the camera, which minimizes the noise increase in the MR and optical images below practical relevance. The optical layout uses an adaptive lens for focusing, 2 × 2 modular combinations of objectives with 0.6mm to 2.3mm field of view and 4 configurable RGBW illumination channels and achieves a plano-apochromatic optical aberration correction with 0.6μm to 2.3μm resolution. We present the design, implementation and characterization of the prototype including the general optical and MR-compatible design strategies, a knife-edge optical characterization and different concurrent imaging demonstrations.

- Abstract

Two severe summer-time convective events in Germany are investigated which can be classified by the prevailing synoptic conditions into a strong and a weak forcing case. The strong forcing case exhibits a larger scale precipitation pattern caused by frontal ascent whereas scattered convection is dominating the convective activity in the weak forcing case. Other distinguished differences between the cases are faster movement of convective cells and larger regions with significant loss mainly due to severe gusts in the strong forcing case. A comprehensive set of various observations is used to characterise the two different events. The observations include measurements from a lightning detection network, precipitation radar, geostationary satellite and weather stations, as well as information from an automated cell detection algorithm based on radar reflectivity which is combined with severe weather reports, and damage data from insurances. Forecast performance at various time scales is analysed ranging from nowcasting and warning to short-range forecasting. Various methods and models are examined, including human warnings, observation-based nowcasting algorithms and high-resolution ensemble prediction systems. The analysis shows the advantages of a multi-sensor and multi-source approach in characterising convective events and their impacts. Using data from various sources allows to combine the different strengths of observational data sets, especially in terms of spatial coverage or data accuracy, e.g. damage data from insurances provide good spatial coverage with little meteorological information while measurements at weather stations provide accurate but pointwise observations. Furthermore, using data from multiple sources allow for a better understanding of the convective life cycle. Several parameters from different instruments are shown to have a predictive skill for convective development, these include satellite-based cloud-top cooling rates as measure for intensive convective growth, 3D-radar reflectivity, mesocyclone detection from doppler radar, overshooting top detection or lightning jumps to evaluate storm intensification and formation of severe weather. This synergetic approach can help to improve nowcasting algorihtms and thus the warning process. The predictability of the analysed severe convective events differs with different types of forcing which is reflected in both, convective-scale ensemble prediction system forecasts and human weather warnings. Human warnings show larger false alarm rates in the weak forcing case. Ensemble predictions are able to capture the characteristics of the convective precipitation. The forecast skill is connected strongly to the synoptic situation and the presence of large-scale forcing increases the forecast skill. This has to be considered for potential future warn-on-forecast strategies.

The Hans-Ertel Centre for Weather Research is a network of German universities, research institutes and the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD). It has been established to trigger and intensify basic research and education on weather forecasting and climate monitoring. The performed research ranges from nowcasting and short-term weather forecasting to convective-scale data assimilation, the development of parameterizations for numerical weather prediction models, climate monitoring and the communication and use of forecast information. Scientific findings from the network contribute to better understanding of the life-cycle of shallow and deep convection, representation of uncertainty in ensemble systems, effects of unresolved variability, regional climate variability, perception of forecasts and vulnerability of society. Concrete developments within the research network include dual observation-microphysics composites, satellite forward operators, tools to estimate observation impact, cloud and precipitation system tracking algorithms, large-eddy-simulations, a regional reanalysis and a probabilistic forecast test product. Within three years, the network has triggered a number of activities that include the training and education of young scientists besides the centre's core objective of complementing DWD's internal research with relevant basic research at universities and research institutes. The long term goal is to develop a self-sustaining research network that continues the close collaboration with DWD and the national and international research community.

We present a rapid-prototyping process to fabricate aspherical lens arrays based on surface deformation due to thermal expansion of PDMS. Using laser-structuring and molding in combination with an FEM-based shape optimization, we were able to design, fabricate and characterize different micro-lens arrays. This fabrication process can be used for almost any kind of arbitrary lens shape, which allows for a large design freedom for micro lenses.

The development and use of nowcasting systems should inevitably be accompanied by the development and application of suitable verification methods. A thorough verification strategy is needed to adequately assess the quality of the system and consequently to lead to improvements. Different verification methods for thunderstorms and its attributes are discussed along with the importance of observational data sets. They are applied to two radar-based nowcasting algorithms for a convective season using various observation data sets. The results show, that the combination of the two algorithms outperforms a single algorithm.
