Abstract

The PETRA IV project for upgrading the 2.3 km 6 GeV PETRA III storage ring to a diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation source is nearing the end of its detailed technical design phase. We present the ring lattice based on the hybrid six-bend achromat (H6BA) cell and a detailed evaluation of its beam dynamics performance. Design challenges as well as unique opportunities associated with a low emittance ring of a large size are discussed.

Abstract

The concepts of wake fields and impedance are introduced to describe the electromagnetic interaction of a bunch of charged particles with its environment in an particle accelerator. The wake fields can act back on the beam and lead to instabilities, which may limit the achievable current per bunch, the total current, or even both. Some typical examples are used to illustrate the wake function and its basic properties. Then the frequency-domain view of the wake field or impedance is explained, and basic properties of the impedance are derived. The impedance of a cavity mode is illustrated using an equivalent circuit model. The relation of wake field effects to important beam parameters is treated in the rigid beam approximation. Several examples are employed to illustrate the impact of the geometry and the material properties of the vacuum chamber on the impedance. Abstract

Chapter 2 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. 4. Calculation of Asymptotic and RMS Kicks Due To Higher Order Modes in the 3.9GHz Cavity

Abstract

FLASH plans to use a "third harmonic" (3.9GHz) superconducting cavity to compensate nonlinear distortions of the longitudinal phase space due to the sinusoidal curvature of the the cavity voltage of the TESLA 1.3GHz cavities. Higher order modes (HOMs) in the 3.9GHz have a significant impact on the dynamics of the electron bunches in a long bunch train. Kicks due to dipole modes can be enhanced along the bunch train depending on the frequency and Q-value of the modes. The enhancement factor for a constant beam offset with respect to the cavity has been calculated. A simple Monte Carlo model of these effects, allowing for scatter in HOM frequencies due to manufacturing variances, has also been implemented and results for both FLASH and for an XFEL-like configuration are presented.

The LHC is already a highly complexand exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures(underground and on surface)and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

9th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC’18, Vancouver, Canada, 29 Apr 2018 - 4 May 2018; 3 pp. (2018)., Working on a coupling resonance is a usual way of producing round beams in a synchrotron. The beam dynamics in this regime is however more complicated, and the emittance is sensitive to the working point, coupling correction, and bunch current drop with time, which complicates the operation. We present experience with optics setup for working on a coupling resonance in PETRA III, including linear and nonlinear beam optics characteristics, and the measurement of the horizontal and vertical beam emittances with a 2D interferometer. Beam dynamics on a coupling resonance forPETRA IV, the MBA upgrade of PETRA III currently under consideration, is also presented.

Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the project and is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of HL-LHC.

Abstract

To extend the discovery potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) a design study for a novel machine configuration, the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), was started with the goal to increase its luminosity by a factor of 10 beyond its design value. The new machine configuration will also include an upgraded detector configuration and a new beam pipe in the CMS detector. The short range wakefields and the trapped Higher Order Modes (HOMs) for the new design of the vacuum chamber are calculated and compared with the presently used chamber. The kick and loss parameters are presented for different sets of beam parameters. The numerical calculations have been performed with the computer codes MAFIA and ECHO2D. The obtained data are intended to be included into the impedance database of the HL-LHC.

18. Observations of electron cloud phenomena at PETRA III

Abstract

PETRA III is a third generation synchrotron radiation facility at DESY, which is presently operated with positron beams. Regular user operation started in mid 2010 after a commissioning phase which began in April 2009. The design current of 100 mA has been achieved but with different number of bunches and bunch to bunch distances than originally foreseen since a strong vertical emittance growth was observed for the design bunch filling pattern with 960 bunches. During machine studies different bunch filling patterns have been tested. In 2012 two scrubbing runs with 480 bunches and a bunch to bunch spacing of 16 ns have been done. The recent measurements indicate that the scrubbing runs have mitigated the emittance growth. Furthermore conditioning effects have been observed during the user runs in 2011. The results from the measured emittances and tune spectra are reported.

Abstract

A design study for a High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) was started to extend the discovery potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Abstract

Wakefields and trapped Higher Order Modes (HOMs) in the CMS experimental chamber at the LHC are investigated using a geometrical model which closely reflects the presently installed vacuum chamber. The basic rf-parameters of the HOMs including the frequency, loss parameter, and the Q-value are provided. To cover also transient effects the short range wakefields and the total loss parameter has been calculated, too. Most numerical calculations are performed with the computer code MAFIA. The calculations of the Modes are complemented with an analysis of the multi-bunch instabilities due to the longitudinal and dipole modes in the CMS vacuum chamber.

The 3rd generation low-emittance 6 GeV PETRA III facility has been substantially modified to add new beamlines. This extension project involved the complete removal and reconstruction of part of the storage ring with a double-bend achromat lattice as well as the construction of two new experimental halls. Making use of two long straight sections and a canted undulator scheme in the rebuilt arcs, up to ten new insertion device beamlines can be accommodated. Abstract

This report contains a comprehensive technical description of a new international research infrastructure, the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) Facility. It was written between October 2005 and June 2006 and provides a realistic cost estimate and a compelling assessment of the scientific pay-off. The report has been prepared with the contribution of hundreds of people from many laboratories in Europe and even beyond. Their contributions have been harmonised and merged by many editors, and the whole effort has been coordinated by the European Project Team, generously supported and hosted by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) laboratory.

Abstract

3 pp. (2004)., At DESY it is planned to convert the PETRA ring into a synchrotron radiation facility, called PETRA III, in 2007. Different operation modes with single bunch intensities of up-to 2.5 mA have been considered to serve the needs of the user communities. A first estimate of the impedance budget of PETRA III is given based on analytical models and numerical wakefield calculations of several vacuum chamber elements. The impedance model includes higher order modes (HOMs) of the cavities to cover multi bunch aspects. The beam current limitations due to multi and single bunch instabilities are discussed. The build up of an electron cloud is also investigated for the option of using a positron beam to generate the synchrotron radiation.
