In the recovery of low permeability reservoir, the capillary pressure has an important effect, which may reduce gas production. Due to the capillary end effect, there are two flow patterns in the vicinity of the production well: both water and gas phases can flow into the production well and only gas phase can enter the production well. Based on the analytical equations of one-dimensional radial flow considering the capillary end effect, an alternative numerical well model for low permeability gas reservoir is constructed. Numerical examples show that the proposed model can reflect the dramatic change for saturation and gas-phase pressure in the vicinity of the production well both for two flow patterns, and therefore can predict the gas and water productions accurately at different grid scales. In contrast, the original Peaceman well model for multi-phase flow, which is directly extended from that for single-phase flow, only can provide good prediction under the condition of that the grid size is enough small. Especially, for the original Peaceman well model, this problem is out of control since it is difficult to estimate a suitable grid size.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on estrous cycle, sex hormone levels and ovary histological features. A total of 80 female SD rats were randomly divided into 8 groups (n=10 per group): short-course control group, short-course low-dose group, short-course medium-dose group, and short-course high-dose group, long-course control group, long-course low-dose group, long-course medium-dose group and longcourse high-dose group. Intragastrical DEHP was administrated at 1000 mg/kg/d (low dose), 2000 mg/kg/d (medium dose) and 3000 mg/kg/d (high dose) independently for 14 days (short course) or 28 days (long course). Rats in control groups were untreated. Vaginal smearing was used to detect the estrous cycle and rats were weighed at every Monday and Thursday to evaluate the growth status. At the end of study, rats were sacrificed and bilateral ovaries were obtained for histological examination. The difficulties of phase unwrapping was increased with the existence of flat-earth phase removal, at the same time, it covered up the real topographical conditions. In order to solve this problem, the paper presented a method of re-flattening. based on DEM to eliminate flat-earth phase, with the interferogram, and then chose some special control points to construct polynomial fitting, removed residual phase and noise. By analyzing the ALOS/PALSAR at the mine subsidence area, the contrast experiment was carried out. The results showed that the method can clearly reflect the earth’s surface changes, reduce the surface deformation error, get a more accurate interferogram phase and improve the precision of the INSAR interferometry.

Abstract Background S100A9 was originally discovered as a factor secreted by inflammatory cells. Recently, S100A9 was found to be associated with several human malignancies. The purpose of this study is to investigate S100A9 expression in gastric cancer and explore its role in cancer progression. Methods S100A9 expression in gastric tissue samples from 177 gastric cancer patients was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The expression of its dimerization partner S100A8 and the S100A8/A9 heterodimer were also assessed by the same method. The effect of exogenous S100A9 on motility of gastric cancer cells AGS and BGC-823 was then investigated. Results S100A9 was specifically expressed by inflammatory cells such as macrophages and neutrophils in human gastric cancer and gastritis tissues. Statistical analysis showed that a high S100A9 cell count (> = 200) per 200x magnification microscopic field in cancer tissues was predictive of early stage gastric cancer. High S100A9-positive cell count was negatively correlated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.009) and tumor invasion (P = 0.011). S100A9 was identified as an independent prognostic predictor of overall survival of patients with gastric cancer (P = 0.04). Patients with high S100A9 cell count were with favorable prognosis (P = 0.021). Further investigation found that S100A8 distribution in human gastric cancer tissues was similar to S100A9. However, the number of S100A8-positive cells did not positively correlate with patient survival. The inflammatory cells infiltrating cancer were S100A8/A9 negative, while those in gastritis were positive. Furthermore, exogenous S100A9 protein inhibited migration and invasion of gastric cancer cells. Conclusions Our results suggested S100A9-positive inflammatory cells in gastric cancer tissues are associated with early stage of gastric cancer and good prognosis.

Abstract Background Biomarkers that predict clinical response, tumor recurrence or patient survival are severely lacking for most cancers, particularly for oral and pharyngeal cancer. This study examines whether gene-promoter methylation of tumor DNA correlates with survival and recurrence rates in a population of patients with oral or pharyngeal cancer. Methods The promoter methylation status of the DNA repair gene MGMT and the tumor suppressor genes CDKN2A and RASSF1 were evaluated by methylation-specific PCR in 88 primary oral and pharyngeal tumors and correlated with survival and tumor recurrence. Quantitative MGMT methylation was also assessed. Results 29.6% of the tumors presented with MGMT methylation, 11.5% with CDKN2A methylation and 12.1% with RASSF1 methylation. MGMT promoter methylation was significantly associated with poorer overall and disease-free survival. No differences in methylation status of MGMT and RASSF1 with HPV infection, smoking or drinking habits were observed. A significant inverse trend with the amount of MGMT methylation and overall and disease-free survival was observed (ptrend = 0.002 and 0.001 respectively). Conclusion These results implicate MGMT promoter methylation as a possible biomarker for oral and pharyngeal cancer prognosis. The critical role of MGMT in DNA repair suggests that defective DNA repair may be correlative in the observed association between MGMT promoter methylation and tumor recurrence. Follow-up studies should include further quantitative MSP-PCR measurement, global methylation profiling and detailed analysis of downstream DNA repair genes regulated by promoter methylation.

The role of vaccine-induced anti-V2 Abs was tested in three protection experiments in rhesus macaques. In an experiment using immunogens similar to those in the RV144 vaccine trial (Anti-envelope [Env]), nine rhesus macaques were coimmunized with gp16092TH023 DNA and SIV gag and gp120A244 and gp120MN proteins. In two V2-focused experiments (Anti-V2 and Anti-V2 Mucosal), nine macaques in each group were immunized with V1V292TH023 DNA, V1V2A244 and V1V2CasaeA2 proteins, and cyclic V2CaseA2 peptide. DNA and protein immunogens, formulated in Adjuplex, were given at 0, 4, 12, and 20 weeks, followed by intrarectal SHIVBaL.P4 challenges. Peak plasma viral loads (PVL) of 106-107 copies/ml developed in all nine sham controls. Overall, PVL was undetectable in one third of immunized macaques, and two animals tightly controlled the virus with the Anti-V2 Mucosal vaccine strategy. In the Anti-Env study, Abs that captured or neutralized SHIVBaL.P4 inversely correlated with PVL. Conversely, no correlation with PVL was found in the Anti-V2 experiments with nonneutralizing plasma Abs that only captured virus weakly. Titers of Abs against eight V1V2 scaffolds and cyclic V2 peptides were comparable between controllers and noncontrollers as were Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and Ab-dependent cell-mediated virus inhibition activities against SHIV-infected target cells and phagocytosis of gp120-coated beads. The Anti-Env experiment supports the role of vaccine-elicited neutralizing and nonneutralizing Abs in control of PVL. However, the two V2-focused experiments did not support a role for nonneutralizing V2 Abs alone in controlling PVL, as neither Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, Ab-dependent cell-mediated virus inhibition, nor phagocytosis correlated inversely with heterologous SHIVBaL.P4 infection.

ABSTRACT In the context of numerical simulators for multiphase flow in porous media, there exists a long‐standing issue known as the grid orientation effect (GOE), wherein different numerical solutions can be obtained when considering grids with different orientations under certain unfavorable conditions. The GOE is relevant to the instability near displacement fronts. If numerical oscillations accompanied by sharp fronts are not adequately suppressed, the GOE occurs. To reduce or even eliminate the GOE, we propose augmenting adaptive artificial viscosity in the process of solving the saturation equation. It has been demonstrated that appropriate artificial viscosity can effectively reduce or even eliminate the GOE. The proposed numerical method can be easily applied in practical engineering problems. Objective: To examine cognitive deficits and associated brain activity in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) patients with parkinsonism (FXTp+), in relation to FXTAS patients without parkinsonism (FXTp-), and normal elderly controls (NC). Methods: Retrospective reviews were performed in 65 FXTAS patients who participated in the event-related brain potential (ERP) study and also had either a videotaped neurological examination or a neurological examination for extrapyramidal signs. Parkinsonism was defined as having bradykinesia with at least one of the following: rest tremor, postural instability, hypermyotonia, or rigidity. Eleven FXTp+ patients were identified and compared to 11 matched FXTp- and 11 NC. Main ERP measures included the N400 congruity effect, N400 repetition effect, and the late positive component (LPC) repetition effect. Results: When compared with FXTp- and NC, the FXTp+ group showed more severe deficits in executive function, cued-recall, recognition memory, along with a significantly reduced N400 repetition effect (thought to index semantic processing and verbal learning/memory) which was correlated with poorer verbal memory. Across all patients, FMR1 mRNA levels were inversely correlated with delayed recall on the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT). Interpretation: The findings of more prominent executive dysfunction and verbal learning/memory deficits in FXTp+ than FXTp- are consistent with findings in Parkinson's disease (PD), and may indicate that concomitant and/or synergistic pathogenetic mechanisms associated with PD play a role in FXTAS. These results have implications not only for understanding the cognitive impairments associated with the parkinsonism subtype of FXTAS, but also for the development of new interventions for these patients.

Microbial remediation has become a prominent focus in soil pollution control due to its environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and high efficiency. The effectiveness of microbial remediation is rooted in the interactions between microbial metabolic activities and the soil environment. Various microorganisms employ distinct mechanisms for pollutant treatment, including surface adsorption, intracellular accumulation, and biomineralization. Using the Web of Science Core Collection database, tools such as CiteSpace 6.1.R6, VOSviewer 1.6.20, and HistCite Pro were employed to conduct a quantitative analysis of several key aspects: the volume and thematic distribution of research papers on microbial remediation of soils, the cooperative networks between countries and institutions, the leading journals, major research hotspots, and emerging trends. The analysis reveals that utilizing microbial regulatory mechanisms and functions to remediate inorganic pollutants, such as heavy metals, and organic pollutants, such as PAHs, is becoming a significant frontier in future research. This study provides a valuable reference for scholars aiming to understand the current status of microbial research in soil remediation, both domestically and internationally. It also offers guidance for developing efficient, sustainable, and safe remediation strategies while identifying directions for future innovative research. The specific results are as follows: (1) China, the USA, India, and other countries have a high frequency of citations in this field, and the research is more in-depth. (2) More and more attention has been paid to the use of microbial remediation of contaminated soil in the world, mainly in Environmental Sciences. (3) Major publications include Chemosphere, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Science of The Total Environment. In the key literature, the use of microorganisms to restore the soil environment and the combination of microorganisms and plants to repair soil contaminated by heavy metals occupy a high proportion. (4) The key areas of focus include the application of microorganisms in soil inorganic pollution remediation, the application of microorganisms in remediation of soil organic pollution (crude oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)), and the contribution of microorganisms to soil pollutant degradation and toxicity assessment systems. The research and development of combined microbial remediation technology is the current research hotspot in the field of soil remediation, focusing on the symbiosis between mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots, the enhancement in the ability of microorganisms to absorb and degrade pollutants and their tolerance, and the interaction mechanism between indigenous microorganisms and plants.
