The scaling of large language models (LLMs) is a critical research area for the efficiency and effectiveness of model training and deployment. Our work investigates the transferability and discrepancies of scaling laws between Dense Models and Mixture of Experts (MoE) models. Through a combination of theoretical analysis and extensive experiments, including consistent loss scaling, optimal batch size and learning rate scaling, and resource allocation strategies scaling, our findings reveal that the power-law scaling framework also applies to MoE Models, indicating that the fundamental principles governing the scaling behavior of these models are preserved, even though the architecture differs. Additionally, MoE Models demonstrate superior generalization, resulting in lower testing losses with the same training compute budget compared to Dense Models. These findings indicate the scaling consistency and transfer generalization capabilities of MoE Models, providing new insights for optimizing MoE Model training and deployment strategies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in autonomous driving (AD) research, propelling its development towards intelligence and efficiency. Currently, the development of AD technology follows two main technical paths: modularization and end-to-end. Modularization decompose the driving task into modules such as perception, prediction, planning, and control, and train them separately. Due to the inconsistency of training objectives between modules, the integrated effect suffers from bias. End-to-end attempts to address this issue by utilizing a single model that directly maps from sensor data to control signals. This path has limited learning capabilities in a comprehensive set of features and struggles to handle unpredictable long-tail events and complex urban traffic scenarios. In the face of challenges encountered in both paths, many researchers believe that large language models (LLMs) with powerful reasoning capabilities and extensive knowledge understanding may be the solution, expecting LLMs to provide AD systems with deeper levels of understanding and decision-making capabilities. In light of the challenges faced by both paths, many researchers believe that LLMs, with their powerful reasoning abilities and extensive knowledge, could offer a solution. To understand if LLMs could enhance AD, this paper conducts a thorough analysis of the potential applications of LLMs in AD systems, including exploring their optimization strategies in both modular and end-to-end approaches, with a particular focus on how LLMs can tackle the problems and challenges present in current solutions. Furthermore, we discuss an important question: Can LLM-based artificial general intelligence (AGI) be a key to achieve high-level AD? We further analyze the potential limitations and challenges that LLMs may encounter in promoting the development of AD technology.

Vertical federated learning is a natural and elegant approach to integrate multi-view data vertically partitioned across devices (clients) while preserving their privacies. Apart from the model training, existing methods requires the collaboration of all clients in the model inference. However, the model inference is probably maintained for service in a long time, while the collaboration, especially when the clients belong to different organizations, is unpredictable in real-world scenarios, such as concellation of contract, network unavailablity, etc., resulting in the failure of them. To address this issue, we, at the first attempt, propose a flexible Active-Passive Federated learning (APFed) framework. Specifically, the active client is the initiator of a learning task and responsible to build the complete model, while the passive clients only serve as assistants. Once the model built, the active client can make inference independently. In addition, we instance the APFed framework into two classification methods with employing the reconstruction loss and the contrastive loss on passive clients, respectively. Meanwhile, the two methods are tested in a set of experiments and achieves desired results, validating their effectiveness.

In e-commerce, the order in which search results are displayed when a customer tries to find relevant listings can significantly impact their shopping experience and search efficiency. Tailored re-ranking system based on relevance and engagement signals in E-commerce has often shown improvement on sales and gross merchandise value (GMV). Designing algorithms for this purpose is even more challenging when the shops are not restricted to domestic buyers, but can sale globally to international buyers. Our solution needs to incorporate shopping preference and cultural traditions in different buyer markets. We propose the SEQ+MD framework, which integrates sequential learning for multi-task learning (MTL) and feature-generated region-mask for multi-distribution input. This approach leverages the sequential order within tasks and accounts for regional heterogeneity, enhancing performance on multi-source data. Evaluations on in-house data showed a strong increase on the high-value engagement including add-to-cart and purchase while keeping click performance neutral compared to state-of-the-art baseline models. Additionally, our multi-regional learning module is "plug-and-play" and can be easily adapted to enhance other MTL applications.

Effective representation of 2D images is fundamental in digital image processing, where traditional methods like raster and vector graphics struggle with sharpness and textural complexity respectively. Current neural fields offer high-fidelity and resolution independence but require predefined meshes with known discontinuities, restricting their utility. We observe that by treating all mesh edges as potential discontinuities, we can represent the magnitude of discontinuities with continuous variables and optimize. Based on this observation, we introduce a novel discontinuous neural field model that jointly approximate the target image and recovers discontinuities. Through systematic evaluations, our neural field demonstrates superior performance in denoising and super-resolution tasks compared to InstantNGP, achieving improvements of over 5dB and 10dB, respectively. Our model also outperforms Mumford-Shah-based methods in accurately capturing discontinuities, with Chamfer distances 3.5x closer to the ground truth. Additionally, our approach shows remarkable capability in handling complex artistic drawings and natural images.

As large language models (LLMs) constantly evolve, ensuring their safety remains a critical research problem. Previous red-teaming approaches for LLM safety have primarily focused on single prompt attacks or goal hijacking. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study LLM safety in multi-turn dialogue coreference. We created a dataset of 1,400 questions across 14 categories, each featuring multi-turn coreference safety attacks. We then conducted detailed evaluations on five widely used open-source LLMs. The results indicated that under multi-turn coreference safety attacks, the highest attack success rate was 56% with the LLaMA2-Chat-7b model, while the lowest was 13.9% with the Mistral-7B-Instruct model. Multimodal Entity Linking (MEL) aims to link ambiguous mentions in multimodal contexts to entities in a multimodal knowledge graph. A pivotal challenge is to fully leverage multi-element correlations between mentions and entities to bridge modality gap and enable fine-grained semantic matching. Existing methods attempt several local correlative mechanisms, relying heavily on the automatically learned attention weights, which may over-concentrate on partial correlations. To mitigate this issue, we formulate the correlation assignment problem as an optimal transport (OT) problem, and propose a novel MEL framework, namely OT-MEL, with OT-guided correlation assignment. Thereby, we exploit the correlation between multimodal features to enhance multimodal fusion, and the correlation between mentions and entities to enhance fine-grained matching. To accelerate model prediction, we further leverage knowledge distillation to transfer OT assignment knowledge to attention mechanism. With the rapid development of deep learning, the implementation of intricate algorithms and substantial data processing have become standard elements of deep learning projects. As a result, the code has become progressively complex as the software evolves, which is difficult to maintain and understand. Existing studies have investigated the impact of refactoring on software quality within traditional software. However, the insight of code refactoring in the context of deep learning is still unclear. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by empirically examining the current state of code refactoring in deep learning realm, and practitioners' views on refactoring. We first manually analyzed the commit history of five popular and well-maintained deep learning projects (e.g., PyTorch). We mined 4,921 refactoring practices in historical commits and measured how different types and elements of refactoring operations are distributed and found that refactoring operation types' distribution in deep learning projects is different from it in traditional Java software. We then surveyed 159 practitioners about their views of code refactoring in deep learning projects and their expectations of current refactoring tools. The result of the survey showed that refactoring research and the development of related tools in the field of deep learning are crucial for improving project maintainability and code quality, and that current refactoring tools do not adequately meet the needs of practitioners. Text-centric visual question answering (VQA) has made great strides with the development of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), yet open-source models still fall short of leading models like GPT4V and Gemini, partly due to a lack of extensive, high-quality instruction tuning data. To this end, we introduce a new approach for creating a massive, high-quality instruction-tuning dataset, Square-10M, which is generated using closed-source MLLMs. The data construction process, termed Square, consists of four steps: Self-Questioning, Answering, Reasoning, and Evaluation. Our experiments with Square-10M led to three key findings: 1) Our model, TextSquare, considerably surpasses open-source previous state-of-the-art Text-centric MLLMs and sets a new standard on OCRBench(62.2%). It even outperforms top-tier models like GPT4V and Gemini in 6 of 10 text-centric benchmarks. 2) Additionally, we demonstrate the critical role of VQA reasoning data in offering comprehensive contextual insights for specific questions. This not only improves accuracy but also significantly mitigates hallucinations. Specifically, TextSquare scores an average of 75.1% across four general VQA and hallucination evaluation datasets, outperforming previous state-of-the-art models. 3) Notably, the phenomenon observed in scaling text-centric VQA datasets reveals a vivid pattern: the exponential increase of instruction tuning data volume is directly proportional to the improvement in model performance, thereby validating the necessity of the dataset scale and the high quality of Square-10M.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an optical technique that measures displacement and strain by tracking pattern movement in a sequence of captured images during testing. DIC has gained recognition in asphalt pavement engineering since the early 2000s. However, users often perceive the DIC technique as an out-of-box tool and lack a thorough understanding of its operational and measurement principles. This article presents a state-of-art review of DIC as a crucial tool for laboratory testing of asphalt concrete (AC), primarily focusing on the widely utilized 2D-DIC and 3D-DIC techniques. To address frequently asked questions from users, the review thoroughly examines the optimal methods for preparing speckle patterns, configuring single-camera or dual-camera imaging systems, conducting DIC analyses, and exploring various applications. Furthermore, emerging DIC methodologies such as Digital Volume Correlation and deep-learning-based DIC are introduced, highlighting their potential for future applications in pavement engineering. The article also provides a comprehensive and reliable flowchart for implementing DIC in AC characterization. Large language models (LLM) have recently attracted surging interest due to their outstanding capabilities across various domains. However, enabling efficient LLM inference is challenging due to its autoregressive decoding that generates tokens only one at a time. Although research works apply pruning or quantization to speed up LLM inference, they typically require fine-tuning the LLM, incurring significant time and economic costs. Meanwhile, speculative decoding has been proposed to use small speculative models (SSMs) to accelerate the inference of LLM. However, the low acceptance rate of SSM and the high verification cost of LLM prohibit further performance improvement of inference. In this paper, we propose Minions, an LLM inference system that accelerates LLM inference with a collective and adaptive speculative generation. Specifically, Minions proposes a majority-voted mechanism to leverage multiple SSMs to jointly speculate the outputs of LLM, which improves the inference performance without introducing prohibitive computation costs for LLM. To better trade off the number of tokens speculated from SSM and the verification cost of LLM, Minions proposes an adaptive mechanism to dynamically determine the optimal speculation length of SSM, which can achieve better inference performance across different models, datasets, and hyper-parameters. In addition, Minions decouples the SSM decoding and LLM verification efficiently and adopts a pipelined execution mechanism to further improve the inference performance of LLM. By comparing with the state-of-the-art LLM inference systems, we demonstrate that Minions can achieve higher inference throughput and lower inference time.

The conventional surface reflection method has been widely used to measure the asphalt pavement layer dielectric constant using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). This method may be inaccurate for in-service pavement thickness estimation with dielectric constant variation through the depth, which could be addressed using the extended common mid-point method (XCMP) with air-coupled GPR antennas. However, the factors affecting the XCMP method on thickness prediction accuracy haven't been studied. Manual acquisition of key factors is required, which hinders its real-time applications. This study investigates the affecting factors and develops a modified XCMP method to allow automatic thickness prediction of in-service asphalt pavement with non-uniform dielectric properties through depth. A sensitivity analysis was performed, necessitating the accurate estimation of time of flights (TOFs) from antenna pairs. A modified XCMP method based on edge detection was proposed to allow real-time TOFs estimation, then dielectric constant and thickness predictions. Field tests using a multi-channel GPR system were performed for validation. Both the surface reflection and XCMP setups were conducted. This paper investigates the problem of designing control policies that satisfy high-level specifications described by signal temporal logic (STL) in unknown, stochastic environments. While many existing works concentrate on optimizing the spatial robustness of a system, our work takes a step further by also considering temporal robustness as a critical metric to quantify the tolerance of time uncertainty in STL. To this end, we formulate two relevant control objectives to enhance the temporal robustness of the synthesized policies. The first objective is to maximize the probability of being temporally robust for a given threshold. The second objective is to maximize the worst-case spatial robustness value within a bounded time shift. We use reinforcement learning to solve both control synthesis problems for unknown systems. Specifically, we approximate both control objectives in a way that enables us to apply the standard Q-learning algorithm. Theoretical bounds in terms of the approximations are also derived. Noisy labels can impair model performance, making the study of learning with noisy labels an important topic. Two conventional approaches are noise modeling and noise detection. However, these two methods are typically studied independently, and there has been limited work on their collaboration. In this work, we explore the integration of these two approaches, proposing an interconnected structure with three crucial blocks: noise modeling, source knowledge identification, and enhanced noise detection using noise source-knowledge-integration methods. This collaboration structure offers advantages such as discriminating hard negatives and preserving genuinely clean labels that might be suspiciously noisy. Our experiments on four datasets, featuring three types of noise and different combinations of each block, demonstrate the efficacy of these components' collaboration. Our collaborative structure methods achieve up to a 10% increase in top-1 classification accuracy in synthesized noise datasets and 3-5% in real-world noisy datasets. The results also suggest that these components make distinct contributions to overall performance across various noise scenarios. These findings provide valuable insights for designing noisy label learning methods customized for specific noise scenarios in the future. Our code is accessible to the public.

The $\alpha/\beta$ interface is central to the microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium alloys. We investigate the structure, thermodynamics and migration of the coherent and semicoherent Ti $\alpha/\beta$ interfaces as a function of temperature and misfit strain via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, thermodynamic integration and an accurate, DFT-trained Deep Potential. The structure of an equilibrium semicoherent interface consists of an array of steps, an array of misfit dislocations, and coherent terraces. Analysis determines the dislocation and step (disconnection) array structure and habit plane. The MD simulations show the detailed interface morphology dictated by intersecting disconnection arrays. The steps are shown to facilitate $\alpha/\beta$ interface migration, while the misfit dislocations lead to interface drag; the drag mechanism is different depending on the direction of interface migration. These results are used to predict the nature of $\alpha$ phase nucleation on cooling through the $\alpha$-$\beta$ phase transition.

Most neural networks assume that input images have a fixed number of channels (three for RGB images). However, there are many settings where the number of channels may vary, such as microscopy images where the number of channels changes depending on instruments and experimental goals. Yet, there has not been a systemic attempt to create and evaluate neural networks that are invariant to the number and type of channels. As a result, trained models remain specific to individual studies and are hardly reusable for other microscopy settings. In this paper, we present a benchmark for investigating channel-adaptive models in microscopy imaging, which consists of 1) a dataset of varied-channel single-cell images, and 2) a biologically relevant evaluation framework. In addition, we adapted several existing techniques to create channel-adaptive models and compared their performance on this benchmark to fixed-channel, baseline models. We find that channel-adaptive models can generalize better to out-of-domain tasks and can be computationally efficient. During a band-gap-tuned semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes can cause spontaneously formed excitons near the zero-band-gap point, or the Lifshitz transition point. This has become an important route to realize bulk excitonic insulators -- an insulating ground state distinct from single-particle band insulators. How this route manifests from weak to strong coupling is not clear. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), we investigate the broken symmetry state across the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition in a leading bulk excitonic insulator candidate system Ta2Ni(Se,S)5. A broken symmetry phase is found to be continuously suppressed from the semimetal side to the semiconductor side, contradicting the anticipated maximal excitonic instability around the Lifshitz transition. Bolstered by first-principles and model calculations, we find strong interband electron-phonon coupling to play a crucial role in the enhanced symmetry breaking on the semimetal side of the phase diagram. Our results not only provide insight into the longstanding debate of the nature of intertwined orders in Ta2NiSe5, but also establish a basis for exploring band-gap-tuned structural and electronic instabilities in strongly coupled systems., Comment: 27 pages, 4 + 9 figures

3D human pose estimation in outdoor environments has garnered increasing attention recently. However, prevalent 3D human pose datasets pertaining to outdoor scenes lack diversity, as they predominantly utilize only one type of modality (RGB image or pointcloud), and often feature only one individual within each scene. This limited scope of dataset infrastructure considerably hinders the variability of available data. In this article, we propose Human-M3, an outdoor multi-modal multi-view multi-person human pose database which includes not only multi-view RGB videos of outdoor scenes but also corresponding pointclouds. In order to obtain accurate human poses, we propose an algorithm based on multi-modal data input to generate ground truth annotation. This benefits from robust pointcloud detection and tracking, which solves the problem of inaccurate human localization and matching ambiguity that may exist in previous multi-view RGB videos in outdoor multi-person scenes, and generates reliable ground truth annotations. Evaluation of multiple different modalities algorithms has shown that this database is challenging and suitable for future research. Furthermore, we propose a 3D human pose estimation algorithm based on multi-modal data input, which demonstrates the advantages of multi-modal data input for 3D human pose estimation. Learning with noisy labels (LNL) aims to train a high-performing model using a noisy dataset. We observe that noise for a given class often comes from a limited set of categories, yet many LNL methods overlook this. For example, an image mislabeled as a cheetah is more likely a leopard than a hippopotamus due to its visual similarity. Thus, we explore Learning with Noisy Labels with noise source Knowledge integration (LNL+K), which leverages knowledge about likely source(s) of label noise that is often provided in a dataset's meta-data. Integrating noise source knowledge boosts performance even in settings where LNL methods typically fail. For example, LNL+K methods are effective on datasets where noise represents the majority of samples, which breaks a critical premise of most methods developed for LNL. Our LNL+K methods can boost performance even when noise sources are estimated rather than extracted from meta-data. We provide several baseline LNL+K methods that integrate noise source knowledge into state-of-the-art LNL models that are evaluated across six diverse datasets and two types of noise, where we report gains of up to 23% compared to the unadapted methods. Open World Object Detection (OWOD) is a novel and challenging computer vision task that enables object detection with the ability to detect unknown objects. Existing methods typically estimate the object likelihood with an additional objectness branch, but ignore the conflict in learning objectness and classification boundaries, which oppose each other on the semantic manifold and training objective. To address this issue, we propose a simple yet effective learning strategy, namely Decoupled Objectness Learning (DOL), which divides the learning of these two boundaries into suitable decoder layers. Moreover, detecting unknown objects comprehensively requires a large amount of annotations, but labeling all unknown objects is both difficult and expensive. Therefore, we propose to take advantage of the recent Large Vision Model (LVM), specifically the Segment Anything Model (SAM), to enhance the detection of unknown objects. Nevertheless, the output results of SAM contain noise, including backgrounds and fragments, so we introduce an Auxiliary Supervision Framework (ASF) that uses a pseudo-labeling and a soft-weighting strategies to alleviate the negative impact of noise. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks, including Pascal VOC and MS COCO, demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Our proposed Unknown Sensitive Detector (USD) outperforms the recent state-of-the-art methods in terms of Unknown Recall, achieving significant improvements of 14.3\%, 15.5\%, and 8.9\% on the M-OWODB, and 27.1\%, 29.1\%, and 25.1\% on the S-OWODB.
