Search

Galactic halos are known to grow hierarchically, inside out. This implies a correlation between the infall lookback time of satellites and their binding energy. Cosmological simulations predict a linear relation between the infall lookback time and the logarithm of the binding energy, with a small scatter. Gaia measurements of the bulk proper motions of globular clusters and dwarf satellites of the Milky Way are sufficiently accurate to establish the kinetic energies of these systems. Assuming the gravitational potential of the Milky Way, we can deduce the binding energies of the dwarf satellites and those of the galaxies that were previously accreted by the Milky Way. This can be compared to cosmological simulations for the first time. The relation of the infall lookback time versus binding energy we found in a cosmological simulation matches that for the early accretion events when the simulated total Milky Way mass within 21 kpc was rescaled to 2 $10^{11}$ solar masses. This agrees well with previous estimates from globular cluster kinematics and from the rotation curve. However, the vast majority of the dwarf galaxies are clear outliers to this rescaled relation, unless they are very recent infallers. In other words, the very low binding energies of most dwarf galaxies compared to Sgr and previous accreted galaxies suggests that most of them were accreted much later than 8 or even 5 Gyr ago. We also found that the subhalo systems in some cosmological simulations are too dynamically hot when they are compared to identified Milky Way substructures. AIMS. We derive the morphology of the stellar component in the outer halo volume, and search for possible overdensities due to substructures therein. METHODS. We made use of some of the data releases of the spectroscopic survey LAMOST DR8-DR9 in tandem with distance determinations for two subsamples, that is, of K-giants and M-giants, respectively, making up 60,000 stars. These distance are obtained through Bayesian techniques that derive absolute magnitudes as a function of measured spectroscopic parameters. Our calculation of the density from these catalogues requires: (1) derivation of the selection function; and (2) a correction for the convolution of the distance errors, which we carried out with Lucy's inversion of the corresponding integral equation. RESULTS. The stellar density distribution of the outer halo (distance to the Galactic centre, $r_G$, of between 25 and 90 kpc) is a smooth monotonously decreasing function with a dependence of approximately $\rho \propto r_G^{-n}$, with $n=4.6\pm 0.4$ for K-giants and $n=4.5\pm 0.2$ for M-giants, and with a insignificant oblateness. The value of $n$ is independent of the angular distance to the Sagittarius tidal stream plane, which is what would be expected if such a stream did not exist in the anticenter positions or had a negligible imprint in the density distribution in the outer halo. Apart from random fluctuations or minor anomalies in some lines of sight, we do not see substructures superimposed in the outer halo volume within the resolution that we are using and limited by the error bars. This constrains the mass of over- and under-densities in the outer halo to be of $\lesssim 10^3$ M$_\odot $/deg$^2$, whereas the total mass of the stellar halo, including inner and outer parts, is $\sim 7\times 10^8$ M$_\odot $., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, accepted to be published in A&A

We report the phase-connected timing ephemeris, polarization pulse profiles, Faraday rotation measurements, and Rotating-Vector-Model (RVM) fitting results of twelve millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal radio Astronomy FAST survey (CRAFTS). The timing campaigns were carried out with FAST and Arecibo over three years. Eleven of the twelve pulsars are in neutron star - white dwarf binary systems, with orbital periods between 2.4 and 100 d. Ten of them have spin periods, companion masses, and orbital eccentricities that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP - Helium white dwarf (He WD) systems. The last binary pulsar (PSR J1912$-$0952) has a significantly smaller spin frequency and a smaller companion mass, the latter could be caused by a low orbital inclination for the system. Its orbital period of 29 days is well within the range of orbital periods where some MSP - He WD systems have shown anomalous eccentricities, however, the eccentricity of PSR J1912$-$0952 is typical of what one finds for the remaining MSP - He WD systems., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepted

We estimate the solar peculiar velocities and Oort constants using a sample of 5,627 A-type stars with $d<0.6\,\rm kpc$ and $|z|<0.1\,\rm kpc$, selected from the LAMOST surveys. The radial and tangential velocities of these A-type stars are fitted by using a non-axisymmetric model. The best-fitting result yields the solar peculiar velocities $(U_\odot,V_\odot,W_\odot)=(11.69\pm0.68, 10.16\pm0.51, 7.67\pm0.10)\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and Oort constants $A=16.31\pm0.89\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$, $B=-11.99\pm0.79\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$, $C=-3.10\pm0.48\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$, $K=-1.25\pm1.04\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$, respectively. $|K+C|>4\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$ means that there is a radial velocity gradient in the extended local disk, implying the local disk is in a non-asymmetric potential. Using the derived Oort constants, we derive the local angular velocity $\Omega\,{\approx}\,A-B=28.30\pm1.19\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$. By using A-type star sample of different volumes, we further try to evaluate the impacts of the ridge pattern in $R$-$V_{\phi}$ plane on constraining the solar motions and Oort constants. As the volume becomes larger toward the anti-center direction, the values of $A$ and $B$ become larger (implying a steeper slope of the local rotation curve) and the value of $V_\odot$ becomes smaller probably caused by the ridge structure and its signal increasing with distance., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this work, 1272 superflares on 311 stars are collected from 22,539 solar-type stars from the second-year observation of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which almost covered the northern hemisphere of the sky. Three superflare stars contain hot Jupiter candidates or ultrashort-period planet candidates. We obtain $\gamma = -1.76\pm 0.11$ of the correlation between flare frequency and flare energy ($dN/dE\propto E^{-\gamma}$) for all superflares and get $\beta=0.42\pm0.01$ of the correlation between superflare duration and energy ($T_{\text {duration }} \propto E^{\beta}$), which supports that a similar mechanism is shared by stellar superflares and solar flares. Stellar photometric variability ($R_{\rm var}$) is estimated for all solar-type stars, and the relation of $E\propto {R_{\rm var}}^{3/2}$ is included. An indicator of chromospheric activity ($S$-index) is obtained by using data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) for 7454 solar-type stars. Distributions of these two properties indicate that the Sun is generally less active than superflare stars. We find that saturation-like feature of $R_{\rm var}\sim 0.1$ may be the reason for superflare energy saturating around $10^{36}$ erg. Object TIC 93277807 was captured by the TESS first-year mission and generated the most energetic superflare. This superflare is valuable and unique that can be treated as an extreme event, which may be generated by different mechanisms rather than other superflares., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJS. The recent discovery of a spiral feature in $Z-V_Z$ phase plane in the solar neighborhood implies that the Galactic disk has been remarkably affected by a dwarf galaxy passing through it some hundreds of millions of years ago. Using 429,500 LAMOST K giants stars, we show that the spiral feature exits not only in the solar vicinity; it also extends to about 15 kpc from the Galactic center, and then disappears beyond this radius. Moreover, we find that when the spiral features in a plot of $V_\phi$ as a function of position in the $Z-V_Z$ plane, at various Galactocentric radii, are re-mapped to $R-Z$ plane, the spiral can explain well the observed asymmetric velocity substructures. This is evidence that the phase spiral features are the same as the bulk motions found in previous as well as this work. Test-particle simulations and N-body simulations show that an encounter with a dwarf galaxy a few hundred million years ago will induce a perturbation in the Galactic disk. In addition, we find that the last impact of Sgr dSph can also contribute to the flare. Recent statistical deconvolution methods have produced extended kinematical maps in a range of heliocentric distances that are a factor of two to three larger than those analysed in the Gaia Collaboration based on the same data. In this paper, we use such maps to derive the rotation curve both in the Galactic plane and in off-plane regions and to analyse the density distribution. By assuming stationary equilibrium and axisymmetry, we used the Jeans equation to derive the rotation curve. Then we fit it with density models that include both dark matter and predictions of the MOND (Modified Newtonian dynamics) theory. Since the Milky Way exhibits deviations from axisymmetry and equilibrium, we also considered corrections to the Jeans equation. To compute such corrections, we ran N-body experiments of mock disk galaxies where the departure from equilibrium becomes larger as a function of the distance from the centre. The rotation curve in the outer disk of the Milky Way that is constructed with the Jeans equation exhibits very low dependence on $R$ and $z$ and it is well-fitted both by dark matter halo and MOND models. The application of the Jeans equation for deriving the rotation curve, in the case of the systems that deviate from equilibrium and axisymmetry, introduces systematic errors that grow as a function of the amplitude of the average radial velocity. In the case of the Milky Way, we can observe that the amplitude of the radial velocity reaches $\sim 10\%$ that of the azimuthal one at $R\approx 20$ kpc. Using a sample of nearly 140,000 red clump stars selected from the LAMOST and Gaia Galactic surveys, we have mapped mean vertical velocity $\overline{V_{z}}$ in the $X$-$Y$ plane for a large volume of the Galactic disk (6 $< R < 16$ kpc; $-20 <\phi< 50^{\circ}$; $|Z| < 1$ kpc). A clear signature where $\overline{V_{z}}$ increases with $R$ is detected for the chemically thin disk. The signature for the thick disk is however not significant, in line with the hot nature of this disk component. For the thin disk, the warp signature shows significant variations in both radial and azimuthal directions, in excellent agreement with the previous results of star counts. Fitting the two-dimensional distribution of $\overline{V_{z}}$ with a simple long-lived static warp model yields a line-of-node angle for this kinematic warp of about $12.5^{\circ}$, again consistent with the previous results., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, ApJ accepted

We revisit the diagonal ridge feature (diagonal distributions in the $R, v_{\phi}$ plane) found in $Gaia$ and present timing analysis for it between Galactocentric distances of $R=7.5$ and 12 \,kpc, using Main-Sequence-Turn-Off and OB stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys. We recover the ridge pattern in the $R$--$v_{\phi}$ plane color coded by mean radial velocity and find this feature is presented from very young (OB stars, few hundred \,Myr) to very old populations ($\tau$ = 9$-$14 \,Gyr). Meanwhile, some ridge features are also revealed in the metallicity [Fe/H], [$\alpha$/Fe] and $v_{z}$ distributions. In the $L_{Z}, v_{\phi}$ plane, one of the ridge patterns, with constant angular momentum per unit mass, shows variations with different age populations compared. By combining LAMOST DR4 and Gaia DR2 common red clump stars with age and proper motion, we analyze the amplitude evolution of the stellar warp independently of any assumption with a simple model. The greatest height of the warp disk increases with Galactocentric distance in different populations and it is dependent on the age: the younger stellar populations exhibit stronger warp features than the old ones, accompanied with the warp amplitude $\gamma ({\rm age})$ decreasing with age and its first derivative $\dot{\gamma} ({\rm age})$ is different from zero. The azimuth of line of nodes $\phi _w$ is stable at $-$5 degree without clear time evolution, which perfectly confirms some of previous works. All these self-consistent evidences support that our Galactic warp should most likely be a long lived, but non-steady structure and not a transient one, which is supporting the warp is originated from gas infall onto the disk or other hypotheses that suppose that the warp mainly affects to the gas, and consequently younger populations tracing the gas are stronger than the older ones. We present a large, homogeneous catalogue of molecular clouds within 4 kpc from the Sun at low Galactic latitudes ($|b|$ $<$ 10\degr) with unprecedented accurate distance determinations. Based on the three-dimensional dust reddening map and estimates of colour excesses and distances of over 32 million stars presented in Chen et al, we have identified 567 dust/molecular clouds with a hierarchical structure identification method and obtained their distance estimates by a dust model fitting algorithm. The typical distance uncertainty is less than 5 per cent. As far as we know, this is the first large catalogue of molecular clouds in the Galactic plane with distances derived in a direct manner. The clouds are seen to lie along the Sagittarius, Local and Perseus Arms. In addition to the known structures, we propose the existence of a possible {\it spur}, with a pitch angle of about 34\degr, connecting the Local and the Sagittarius Arms in the fourth quadrant. We have also derived the physical properties of those molecular clouds. The distribution of cloud properties in different parameter spaces agrees grossly with the previous results. Context: In our Paper I, by using statistical deconvolution methods, extended kinematics maps of Gaia-DR2 data have been produced in a range of heliocentric distances that are a factor of two to three larger than those analyzed previously by the Gaia Collaboration with the same data. It added the range of Galactocentric distances between 13 kpc and 20 kpc to the previous maps. Aims: Here, we investigate the dynamical effects produced by different mechanisms that can explain the radial and vertical components of these extended kinematic maps, including a decomposition of bending and breathing of the vertical components. This paper as a whole tries to be a compendium of different dynamical mechanisms whose predictions can be compared to the kinematic maps. Methods: Using analytical methods or simulations, we are able to predict the main dynamical factors and compare them to the predictions of the extended kinematic maps of Gaia-DR2. Results: The gravitational influence of Galactic components that are different from the disk, such as the long bar or bulge, the spiral arms, or a tidal interaction with Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, may explain some features of the velocity maps, especially in the inner parts of the disk. However, they are not sufficient in explaining the most conspicuous gradients in the outer disk. Vertical motions might be dominated by external perturbations or mergers, although a minor component may be due to a warp whose amplitude evolves with time. Here, we show with two different methods, which analyze the dispersion of velocities, that the mass distribution of the disk is flared. Despite these partial explanations, the main observed features can only be explained in terms of out-of-equilibrium models, which are either due to external perturbers or to the fact that the disk has not had time to reach equilibrium since its formation., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, accepted to be published in A&A

We investigate the three-dimensional asymmetrical kinematics and present time stamps of the Milky Way disk between Galactocentric distances of $R=12$ and 15 \,kpc, using red clump stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic survey, also with proper motion measurements provided by the Gaia DR2. We discover velocity substructure above the Galactic plane corresponding to a density dip found recently ("south-middle opposite" density structure[R $\sim$ 12-15 \,kpc, Z $\sim$ 1.5 \,kpc] discovered in \citet{Wang2018b, Wang2018c}) in the radial and azimuthal velocity. For the vertical velocity, we detect clear vertical bulk motions or bending mode motions, which has no clear north-south asymmetry corresponding to the in-plane asymmetrical features. In the subsample of stars with different ages, we find that there is little temporal evolution of the in-plane asymmetry from 0$-$14 \,Gyr, which means the structure is sensitive to the perturbations in almost cosmic time possibly. We perform analysis of the three-dimensional kinematics of Milky Way disk stars in mono-age populations. We focus on stars between Galactocentric distances of $R=6$ and 14 \,kpc, selected from the combined LAMOST DR4 red clump giant stars and Gaia DR2 proper motion catalogue. We confirm the 3D asymmetrical motions of recent works and provide time tagging of the Galactic outer disk asymmetrical motions near the anticenter direction out to Galactocentric distances of 14\,kpc. Radial Galactocentric motions reach values up to 10 km s$^{-1}$, depending on the age of the population, and present a north-south asymmetry in the region corresponding to density and velocity substructures that were sensitive to the perturbations in the early 6 \,Gyr. After that time, the disk stars in this asymmetrical structure have become kinematically hotter, and are thus not sensitive to perturbations, and we find the structure is a relatively younger population. With quantitative analysis, we find stars both above and below the plane at $R\gtrsim 9$ kpc that exhibit bending mode motions of which the sensitive duration is around 8 \,Gyr. We speculate that the in-plane asymmetries might not be mainly caused by a fast rotating bar, intrinsically elliptical outer disk, secular expansion of the disk, or streams. Spiral arm dynamics, out-of-equilibrium models, minor mergers or others are important contributors. Vertical motions might be dominated by bending and breathing modes induced by complicated inner or external perturbers. We have investigated the distributions of stellar azimuthal and radial velocity components $V_{\Phi}$ and $V_{R}$ in the vertical position-velocity plane $Z$-$V_{Z}$ across the Galactic disc of $6.34 \lesssim R \lesssim 12.34$\,kpc and $|\Phi| \lesssim 7.5^{\circ}$ using a Gaia and Gaia-LAMOST sample of stars. As found in previous works, the distributions exhibit significant spiral patterns. The $V_{R}$ distributions also show clear quadrupole patterns, which are the consequence of the well-known tilt of the velocity ellipsoid. The observed spiral and quadrupole patterns in the phase space plane vary strongly with radial and azimuthal positions. The phase spirals of $V_{\Phi}$ become more and more relaxed as $R$ increases. The spiral patterns of $V_{\Phi}$ and $V_{R}$ and the quadrupole patterns of $V_{R}$ are strongest at $-2^{\circ} < \Phi < 2^{\circ}$ but negligible at $4^{\circ} < \Phi < 6^{\circ}$ and $-6^{\circ} < \Phi < -4^{\circ}$. Our results suggest an external origin of the phase spirals. In this scenario, the intruder, most likely the previously well-known Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, passed through the Galactic plane in the direction towards either Galactic center or anti-center. The azimuthal variations of the phase spirals also help us constrain the passage duration of the intruder. Accurate determinations of atmospheric parameters (effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, surface gravity log $g$ and metallicity [Fe/H]) and distances for large complete samples are of vital importance for various Galactic studies. We have developed a photometric method to select red giant stars and estimate their atmospheric parameters from the photometric colors provided by the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) data release (DR) 1.1, using stars in common with the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys as a training set. Distances are estimated with two different approaches: one based on the Gaia DR2 parallaxes for nearby ($d \leq 4.5$ kpc) bright stars and another based on the absolute magnitudes predicted by intrinsic color $(g-i)_0$ and photometric metallicity [Fe/H] for distant ($d > 4.5$ kpc) faint stars. Various tests show that our method is capable of delivering atmospheric parameters with a precision of $\sim$80 K for $T_{\rm eff}$, $\sim$0.18 dex for [Fe/H] and $\sim$0.35 dex for log $g$, but with a significant systematic error at log $g \sim$ 2.3. For distances delivered from $(g-i)_0$ and photometric [Fe/H], our test with the member stars of globular clusters show a median uncertainty of 16 per cent with a negligible zero-point offset. Using this method, atmospheric parameters and distances of nearly one million red giant stars are derived from SMSS DR1.1. Proper motion measurements from Gaia DR2 are available for almost all of the red giant stars, and radial velocity measurements from several large spectroscopic surveys are available for 44 per cent of these. We observed the coulomb blockade phenomena in ferromagnetic contacting single wall semiconducting carbon nanotube devices. No obvious Coulomb peaks shift was observed with existing only the Zeeman splitting at 4K. Combining with other effects, the ferromagnetic leads prevent the orbital spin states splitting with magnetic field up to 2 Tesla at 4K. With increasing magnetic field further, both positive or negative coulomb peaks shift slopes are observed associating with clockwise and anticlockwise orbital state splitting. The strongly suppressed/enhanced of the conductance has been observed associating with the magnetic field induced orbital states splitting/converging.
