In this empirical study we examined the effect of a literacy-infused science intervention on fifth grade economically challenged students' science achievement in the curriculum-based and standardized assessments. A total of 27 treatment students and 20 comparison students from two intermediate schools in a rural district in South Texas in the United States participated in the present study. The intervention consisted of ongoing, structured, bi-weekly virtual professional development (VPD) with virtual mentoring and coaching (VMC) at the teacher level and literacy-infused science lessons with inquiry-based learning delivered at the student level. Results revealed a significant and positive intervention effect in favor of treatment students as reflected in higher normal curve equivalent scores in the standardized science assessment and higher scores in curriculum-based assessment. We conclude that the literacy-infused science intervention, inclusive of evidence-based curriculum, VPD, and VMC, is particularly beneficial for promoting science learning for the students in rural areas with educational and economical challenges due to geographic isolation.

We examined student reading achievement in rural and non-rural school districts in Texas. Our research questions probed the improvement in student performance over time, differences in the number of students achieving at different performance levels, and the impact of district-level characteristics on reading achievement. Through quantitative analyses of district-level aggregated data, we compared student growth trajectories over three years. We employed growth hierarchical linear modelling to explore to what extent time, school location, and their interaction impacted student outcomes, as measured by the state reading test. We found that both rural and non-rural students improved in all three performance levels. Location differences were only found in the higher performance levels. We further added 11 district-level factors that might influence student reading performance into the model. The percentages of at-risk and economically disadvantaged students, student mobility rate, and teacher turnover rate had a statistically significant negative impact for all reading levels.

Thyroid carcinoma in children and young adolescent is a special type of thyroid carcinoma, which has received more and more attention. In recent years, confusion and difficulties continue to emerge in understanding the disease. This article reviewed these clinical challenges and summarized recent research progress at home and abroad, with a view to identifying valuable opportunities to improve the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid carcinoma in children and young adolescents.

Protein lysine methyltransferases (PKMT) catalyze methylation of lysine residues on histone tails and non-histone targets. These important post-translational modifications affect the structure and compactness of chromatin, which in turn affects gene expression. There is growing evidence that genetic alterations in PKMT affect the normal expression of PKMT in tissues and thus exert oncogenic or tumor suppressor functions. The expression of PKMT has been found to be associated with the prognosis of tumor patients in a variety of solid tumors. In this review, we summarized the functions of three major PKMT, including EZH2, KMT2 family and SMYD family, and their roles in thyroid carcinoma.

This study focuses on comparing the growth trajectory of border and non-border school districts regarding their fifth-grade students' performance on a standardized reading test. Using a growth hierarchical linear model, we investigated the effect of time, school location, and their interaction on students' reading performance through the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) reading test in five recent school years. It was found that border school students lagged behind in reading at the initial stage when STAAR was first administered. As time went by, the gap between border and non-border district students' reading performance remained. Implications for teaching pedagogy and research are discussed regarding the preparation of border district students to become bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate.

In this study, we conducted a path analysis to explore the effect of English language learning strategies across four domains (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing) on English as foreign language (EFL) learners' self-efficacy beliefs. A total of 216 undergraduates from a coastal Chinese university responded to two survey instruments that were translated and adapted to fit the research setting. The hypothesized model was revised based on modification indices and theoretical and empirical underpinning. Final model revealed significantly positive paths from (a) English listening, speaking, and reading strategies to learners' self-efficacy beliefs in the corresponding domain; (b) English listening and reading strategies to self-efficacy beliefs in English writing; and (c) English listening strategies to self-efficacy beliefs in speaking and reading. Further, we failed to identify the factor of English writing strategies in the model. Findings are expected to offer research evidence and pedagogical implications in engaging college students' English learning, which may be applicable for EFL classrooms in a global context.

In view of the sudden change of mine pressure in 226 upper 02 fully mechanized caving face of Huangyuchuan Coal Mine, the mechanism and countermeasures of sudden change of mine pressure in fully mechanized caving face are studied by using the methods of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field measurement under the condition that the upper coal seam has been mined and affected by faults. The results show that 226 upper 02 fully mechanized caving face is located in the post mining stress influence area of the upper coal seam. During the mining process, the roof of the upper goaf is activated, the main key layer is secondary unstable, and the large-scale bench subsidence of overburden leads to the sudden change of mine pressure in 226 upper 02 fully mechanized caving working face. Therefore, the method of reducing mining height is used to control the occurrence of sudden change of mine pressure. After field application, the severity of ground pressure in the working face is significantly reduced, which ensures the safe and efficient mining of Huangyuchuan 226 upper 02 fully mechanized top caving face.

Background and purpose: Thyroid cancer is one of the fastest increasing malignancies worldwide, and its incidence in children and adolescents has also been increasing over the years. Meta-analysis were performed to investigate the correlation between gene alteration patterns and distant metastasis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) in children and adolescents. Methods: Databases were used to search studies on the association between gene alteration patterns and distant metastasis of DTC in children and adolescents, and STATA 14.0 software was used to analyze the gene alterations related to distant metastasis. Results: Twenty studies involving 1 273 patients were included, and the analysis showed that negative BRAF V600E mutation and positive RET gene fusion were risk factors for distant metastasis in DTC in children and adolescents, while NTRK gene fusion was not significantly associated with distant metastasis. Conclusion: Our research identified several genetic alterations associated with distant metastasis in DTC in children and adolescents, which could be guidance for prognosis assessment and treatment planning.

INTRODUCTION: Reduced brain energy metabolism, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) dysregulation, and extracellular amyloid beta (Aβ) oligomer (xcAβO) buildup are some well‐known Alzheimer's disease (AD) features; how they promote neurodegeneration is poorly understood. We previously reported that xcAβOs inhibit nutrient‐induced mitochondrial activity (NiMA) in cultured neurons. We now report NiMA disruption in vivo. METHODS: Brain energy metabolism and oxygen consumption were recorded in heterozygous amyloid precursor protein knock‐in (APPSAA) mice using two‐photon fluorescence lifetime imaging and multiparametric photoacoustic microscopy. RESULTS: NiMA is inhibited in APPSAA mice before other defects are detected in these Aβ‐producing animals that do not overexpress APP or contain foreign DNA inserts into genomic DNA. Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3β) signals through mTORC1 to regulate NiMA independently of mitochondrial biogenesis. Inhibition of GSK3β with TWS119 stimulates NiMA in cultured human neurons, and mitochondrial activity and oxygen consumption in APPSAA mice. DISCUSSION: NiMA disruption in vivo occurs before plaques, neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline in APPSAA mice, and may represent an early stage in human AD. Context Presently, there is a paucity of prospective clinical trials investigating neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced thyroid cancer. Objective This study was a multicenter, open-label, single-arm, phase II trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of apatinib as neoadjuvant therapy in patients with local advanced differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Methods Patients were treated with preoperative apatinib over a course of 2 to 4 cycles, culminating in surgical resection. The primary endpoints were objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR); the secondary endpoints were the rate of R0 surgery, alterations in serum thyroglobulin levels, disease-free survival, and adverse events (AEs). Results A total of 14 patients who met the inclusion criteria were administered neoadjuvant apatinib. Among these, 13 patients underwent surgical procedures following apatinib treatment and were enrolled in the ITT population. The ORR was 53.8% and the DCR was 100%. Of the patients, 84.6% received R0 surgery, while the remaining 15.4% underwent R1 resection. Predominant among the observed AEs were hypertension, hand–foot syndrome, hepatic dysfunction, proteinuria, and hypothyroidism, with no instances of grade 4 or 5 AEs reported. Subsequent to surgery, patients were followed up for a median period of 34 months, during which disease progression occurred in 5 individuals (35.7%), encompassing 3 cases of locoregional recurrences and 2 cases of distant metastases. Conclusion Apatinib may be an effective agent in the use of neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced DTC. Patients may therefore benefit from surgical outcomes and their long-term prognosis. In this three-phase, systematic review, we comprehensively synthesize research on bilingual education in higher education institutions over a 19-year period, starting from the initiation of this top-down educational provision across mainland China. In this context, although English has no official status, it is highly regarded and widely used as a medium of instruction alongside Chinese. We critically examine studies (n = 1,632) published in both English and Chinese outlets on academic discourse that deliberate on "what was studied," "how it was studied," and "what the publication trend was." We argue that scholarly attention should continue to revolve around the benefits of bilingual programs, due to the lack of rigorous empirical evidence that attests to the effectiveness of bilingual education in Chinese higher education. Our review echoes similar research syntheses conducted in Europe and worldwide and is, therefore, expected to shed light on the policy implications and the practice of bilingual education in higher education on a global scale. Recommendations for future research are provided.

This study investigated the psychometric properties of an adapted Chinese version of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Data were collected from 611 college students from two Chinese universities on the scales of Motivation and Learning Strategies. Results suggested that cross-cultural adaptation and modification were necessary when addressing the transferability of self-regulated learning (SRL) models from Western culture to Eastern culture, particularly in the Chinese educational context. The adapted models indicated absence of Intrinsic Goal Orientation, ambiguity of Peer Learning, and split of managing resources of study time and place among Chinese adult learners. Re-specified models were tested and adequate reliability and model fit indices were reported in MSLQ for Chinese adult learners (MSLQ-CAL) with 52 items. These modifications were discussed with theoretical and empirical perspectives related to SRL.

Background: The function of H3F3A G43W mutation, which has been observed in almost all GCTB, remains poorly characterized. Breakthrough in malignant GCTB has been trapped by the lack of clinical available drugs, limited canonical patient samples and paucity of fidelity preclinical models. Methods: Tumor samples obtained from a malignant GCTB was implanted in immunodeficient mice for the generation of PDX. Histological examination and short tandem repeat (STR) were used for inherited features analyses. An epigenetic/transcriptional targeted compound library was selected for drug screening. The in vivo effects of selected drug were validated in PDX model. Results: We established the PDX model with recurrent malignant GCTB specimens, histological examination and STR analyses revealed that PDX and their corresponding parental patients shared the same STRs and histologic features, suggesting common origins. ITF-2357 was the most significant compound with an IC50 lower than 0.1 uM. The results of the drug screening and in vivo PDX validation demonstrated that ITF-2357 might be a promising drug targeted H3F3A G34W mutation MGCTBs. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that PDX model maintained the same histologic and genetic features as those in the original patient. targeting HDAC through ITF-2357 effectively overcomes malignant GCTB progression in vitro and in vivo. Translational potential statement: As PDX retain the principal histologic and genetic characteristics of the primary tumors, mad it a valuable research tool in predictive clinical efficacy. In this study, we first established a malignant GCTB PDX model, which might further accelerate the progress of drug development in malignant GCTB.
