Abstract

Piezoresponse Force Spectroscopy (PFS) is a powerful method widely used for measuring the nanoscale ferroelectric responses of the materials. However, it is found that certain non-ferroelectric materials can also generate similar responses from the PFS measurements due to many other factors, hence, it is believed that PFS alone is not sufficient to differentiate the ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric materials. On the other hands, this work shows that there are distinct differences in contact resonance frequency variation during the PFS measurements for ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric materials. Therefore, a new, simple and effective method is proposed to differentiate the responses from the ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric materials, this new analysis uses contact resonance frequency responses during the PFS measurements as a new parameter to differentiate the PFS measured responses from different materials., Comment: 26 pages, 6 Figures

11. Estimation of PM 2.5 Using Multi-Angle Polarized TOA Reflectance Data from the GF-5B Satellite.

Abstract

The use of satellite data to estimate PM2.5 is an appropriate approach for long-term, substantial monitoring and assessment. To estimate PM2.5, the majority of the algorithms now in use utilize the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance or aerosol optical depth (AOD) derived from scalar satellite data. However, there is relatively little research on the retrieval of PM2.5 using multi-angle polarized data. With its directional polarimetric camera (DPC), the Chinese new-generation satellite Gaofen 5B (henceforth referred to as GF-5B) offers a unique opportunity to close this gap in multi-angle polarized observation data. In this research, we utilized TOA data from the DPC payload and applied the gradient boosting machine method to simulate the impact of the observation angle, wavelength, and polarization information on the accuracy of PM2.5 retrieval. We identified the optimal conditions for the effective estimation of PM2.5. The quantitative results indicated that, under these optimal conditions, the PM2.5 concentrations retrieved by GF-5B showed a strong correlation with the ground-based data, achieving an R2 of 0.9272 and an RMSE of 7.38 µg·m−3. By contrast, Himawari-8's retrieval accuracy under similar data conditions consisted of an R2 of 0.9099 and RMSE of 7.42 µg·m−3, indicating that GF-5B offers higher accuracy. Furthermore, the retrieval results in this study demonstrated an R2 of 0.81 when compared to the CHAP dataset, confirming the feasibility and effectiveness of the use of GF-5B for PM2.5 retrieval and providing support for PM2.5 estimation through multi-angle polarized data. 12. Satellite‐Based Surveys Reveal Substantial Methane Point‐Source Emissions in Major Oil & Gas Basins of North America During 2022–2023.

Abstract

Utilizing imaging spectroscopy technology to identify methane super‐emitters plays a vital role in mitigating methane emissions in the Oil & Gas (O&G) sector. While earlier research has uncovered significant point‐source methane emissions from O&G production in the US and Canada, which are key regions with large methane emissions, a comprehensive post‐COVID‐19 survey has been notably absent. Here, we perform a detailed survey of methane super‐emitters across multiple basins of North America (Marcellus Shale, Haynesville/Bossier Shale, Permian Basin and Montney Shale) using the new Chinese Gaofen5‐01A/02 (GF5‐01A/02) satellite measurements during 2022–2023. We detect 139 individual methane plumes emanating from 122 point sources, with flux rates ranging from 519 to 16,071 kg hr−1. These emissions exhibit a highly skewed and heavy‐tailed distribution, constituting approximately 23% of the flux inversion with TROPOMI in the sample region, with a range of 13%–40%. Moreover, we observe a 66.7% reduction in methane emissions in Permian Basin during COVID‐19, followed by fluctuations until spring 2023. By summer 2023, methane emissions rebound to twice their previous magnitude (1.68 ± 0.58 Tg a−1). Using these point‐source surveys, we further quantify a regional methane emission of 2.69 ± 0.86 Tg a−1 in Permian Basin. This estimation closely aligns with top‐down inversions (2.22 ± 0.40 Tg a−1) from TROPOMI. The upscale estimation underscores the effectiveness of high‐resolution remote sensing measurements in improving bottom‐up emissions inventories and refining regional methane emission assessments. Our results highlight the potential climate benefits derived from regular monitoring and specific remediation efforts focused on relatively few strong point‐source emissions. Plain Language Summary: Reducing methane (CH4) leaks from Oil & Gas (O&G) production is crucial for abating climate change. However, detecting these abnormal CH4 emissions globally is challenging as they often occur unexpectedly. Satellite remote sensing with hyperspectral imaging spectrometer provides an effective approach for top‐down monitoring. These instruments produce CH4 plume maps, enabling the quantification of emissions. In this research, we conduct a comprehensive survey in major O&G basins of North America during 2022–2023 using the new Chinese Gaofen5‐01A/02 satellite. Through repeated observations by high‐resolution satellites, we capture CH4 emission dynamics in sample basins and quantify their contribution to regional methane budget. Our results demonstrate the value of high‐resolution satellite observations in reducing uncertainties in quantifying anthropogenic CH4 emission and supporting strategies for emission mitigation. Abstract

The solid electrolyte interface (SEI) plays a critical role in determining the performance, stability, and longevity of batteries. This review comprehensively compares the construction strategies of the SEI in Li and Mg batteries, focusing on the differences and similarities in their formation, composition, and functionality. The SEI in Li batteries is well-studied, with established strategies that leverage organic and inorganic components to enhance ion diffusion and mitigate side reactions. In contrast, the development of the SEI in Mg batteries is still in its initial stages, facing significant challenges such as severe passivation and slower ion kinetics due to the divalent nature of magnesium ions. This review highlights various approaches to engineering SEIs in both battery systems, including electrolyte optimization, additives, and surface modifications. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of these strategies on electrochemical performance, cycle life, and safety. Abstract

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) become a highly promising candidate for the large‐scale energy storage system by right of the high volumetric capacity, intrinsic safety and abundant resources of Mg anode. However, the uneven Mg stripping and large overpotential will cause a severe pitting perforation and the followed failure of Mg anode. Herein, we proposed a high‐performance binary Mg‐1 at% Gd alloy anode prepared by the melting and hot extrusion. The introduction of 1 at% Gd element can effectively reduce the Mg2+ diffusion energy barrier (0.34 eV) on alloy surface and induces the formation of a robust and low‐resistance electrolyte/anode interphase, thus enabling a uniform and fast Mg plating/stripping. As a result, the Mg‐1 at.% Gd anode displays a largely enhanced life of 220 h and a low overpotential of 213 mV at a high current density of 5.0 mA cm−2 with 2.5 mAh cm−2. Moreover, the assembled Mg‐1 at.% Gd//Mo6S8 full cell delivers a high rate performance (73.5 mAh g−1 at 5 C) and ultralong cycling stability of 8000 cycles at 5 C.
