1. Optimization of Dark-Field CT for Lung Imaging

Abstract

Background: X-ray grating-based dark-field imaging can sense the small angle scattering caused by an object's micro-structure. This technique is sensitive to lung's porous alveoli and is able to detect lung disease at an early stage. Up to now, a human-scale dark-field CT has been built for lung imaging. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a more thorough optimization method for dark-field lung CT and summarize principles for system design. Methods: We proposed a metric in the form of contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for system parameter optimization, and designed a phantom with concentric circle shape to fit the task of lung disease detection. Finally, we developed the calculation method of the CNR metric, and analyzed the relation between CNR and system parameters. Results: We showed that with other parameters held constant, the CNR first increases and then decreases with the system auto-correlation length (ACL). The optimal ACL is nearly not influenced by system's visibility, and is only related to phantom's property, i.e., scattering material's size and phantom's absorption. For our phantom, the optimal ACL is about 0.21 {\mu}m. As for system geometry, larger source-detector and isocenter-detector distance can increase the system's maximal ACL, helping the system meet the optimal ACL more easily. Conclusions: This study proposed a more reasonable metric and a task-based process for optimization, and demonstrated that the system optimal ACL is only related to the phantom's property., Comment: There is a mistake in subsection 2.3, where the content is not correct because of the incorrect parameter we set, which leads to the following calculations in the following sections potentially incorrect

Abstract

For a century, clinical X-ray imaging has visualised only the attenuation properties of tissue, which fundamentally limits the contrast, particularly in soft tissues like the breast. Imaging based on refraction can overcome this limitation, but so far has been constrained to high-dose ex-vivo applications or required highly coherent X-ray sources, like synchrotrons. It has been predicted that grating interferometry (GI) could eventually allow computed tomography (CT) to be more dose-efficient. However, the benefit of refraction in clinical CT has not been demonstrated so far. Here we show that GI-CT is more dose-efficient in imaging of breast tissue than conventional CT. Our system, based on a 70kVp X-ray tube source and commercially available gratings, demonstrated superior quality, in terms of adipose-to-glandular tissue contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), of refraction-contrast compared to the attenuation images. The fusion of the two modes of contrast outperformed conventional CT for spatial resolutions better than 263{\mu}m and an average dose to the breast of 16mGy, which is in the clinical breast CT range. Our results show that grating interferometry can significantly reduce the dose, while maintaining the image quality, in diagnostic breast CT. Unlike conventional absorption-based CT, the sensitivity of refraction-based imaging is far from being fully exploited, and further progress will lead to significant improvements of clinical X-ray CT.

Abstract

Despite the fact that the resolution of conventional contact/proximity lithography can reach feature sizes down to ~0.5-0.6 micrometers, the accurate control of the linewidth and uniformity becomes already very challenging for gratings with periods in the range of 1-2 {\mu}m. This is particularly relevant for the exposure of large areas and wafers thinner than 300{\mu}m. If the wafer or mask surface is not fully flat due to any kind of defects, such as bowing/warpage or remaining topography of the surface in case of overlay exposures, noticeable linewidth variations or complete failure of lithography step will occur. We utilized the newly developed Displacement Talbot lithography to pattern gratings with equal lines and spaces and periods in the range of 1.0 to 2.4 {\mu}m. The exposures in this lithography process do not require contact between the mask and the wafer, which makes it essentially insensitive to surface planarity and enables exposures with very high linewidth uniformity on thin and even slightly deformed wafers. We demonstrated pattern transfer of such exposures into Si substrates by reactive ion etching using the Bosch process. An etching depth of 30 {\mu}m or more for the whole range of periods was achieved, which corresponds to very high aspect ratios up to 60:1. The application of the fabricated gratings in phase contrast x-ray imaging is presented.

Abstract

Refraction-based x-ray imaging can overcome the fundamental contrast limit of computed tomography (CT), particularly in soft tissue, but so far has been constrained to high-dose ex vivo applications or required highly coherent x-ray sources, such as synchrotrons. Here we demonstrate that grating interferometry (GI) is more dose efficient than conventional CT in imaging of human breast under close-to-clinical conditions. Our system, based on a conventional source and commercial gratings, outperformed conventional CT for spatial resolutions better than 263 µm and absorbed dose of 16 mGy. The sensitivity of GI is constrained by grating fabrication, and further progress will lead to significant improvements of clinical CT.

Abstract

Introduction Occurrence of urinary calculi is a common medical condition. Since treatment and prevention measures depend on the type of stone found, reliable diagnostic tools are required. Dual energy computed tomography (CT) allows for rough classification of the stones found. After extraction, stone composition can be confirmed by laboratory analysis. We investigated to which degree gratings-based X-ray interferometry, which can measure attenuation, refraction and scattering (dark-field) properties of samples, allows for the discrimination of urinary stone type by calculating the ratio (R) of attenuation and scattering signals. Material and methods In an experimental setup we investigated 322 renal stone fragments from 96 patients which were extracted during routine clinical practice. Laboratory analysis showed the chemical composition of the urinary stones. These were correlated with dark field analysis of the stone samples. Measurements were performed on a X-rays gratings interferometer prototype. The attenuation, refraction and scattering signals were measured and the R-value calculated. Results The spread of R-values of a given type of calculi is large, reducing the specificity of the method. Only uric acid stones can reliably be distinguished (sensitivity of 0.86 at a specificity of 0.9) from the other stones. Conclusions Gratings-based dark-field imaging is a non-destructive and potentially non-invasive technique that allows to discriminate between uric acid and non-uric acid stones, which from a clinical point of view represents by far the most important question for stone treatment.

In this paper, we propose a novel regularized iterative reconstruction algorithm with an improved tomographic operator and a powerful data-driven regularizer to tackle this challenging inverse problem. Our algorithm combines the L-BFGS optimization scheme with a data-driven prior parameterized by a deep neural network. Importantly, we propose a novel regularization strategy to ensure that the trained network is non-expansive, which is critical for the convergence and stability analysis we provide. We empirically show that the proposed method achieves high quality images, both on simulated data as well as on real measurements.

Abstract

PURPOSE Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Unfortunately, current breast imaging techniques all suffer from certain limitations: they are either not fully three dimensional, have an insufficient resolution or low soft-tissue contrast. Grating interferometry breast computed tomography (GI-BCT) is a promising X-ray phase contrast modality that could overcome these limitations by offering high soft-tissue contrast and excellent three-dimensional resolution. To enable the transition of this technology to clinical practice, dedicated data-processing algorithms must be developed in order to effectively retrieve the signals of interest from the measured raw data. METHODS This article proposes a novel denoising algorithm that can cope with the high-noise amplitudes and heteroscedasticity which arise in GI-BCT when operated in a low-dose regime to effectively regularize the ill-conditioned GI-BCT inverse problem. We present a data-driven algorithm called INSIDEnet, which combines different ideas such as multiscale image processing, transform-domain filtering, transform learning, and explicit orthogonality to build an Interpretable NonexpanSIve Data-Efficient network (INSIDEnet). RESULTS We apply the method to simulated breast phantom datasets and to real data acquired on a GI-BCT prototype and show that the proposed algorithm outperforms traditional state-of-the-art filters and is competitive with deep neural networks. The strong inductive bias given by the proposed model's architecture allows to reliably train the algorithm with very limited data while providing high model interpretability, thus offering a great advantage over classical convolutional neural networks (CNNs). CONCLUSIONS The proposed INSIDEnet is highly data-efficient, interpretable, and outperforms state-of-the-art CNNs when trained on very limited training data. We expect the proposed method to become an important tool as part of a dedicated plug-and-play GI-BCT reconstruction framework

Abstract

X-ray phase-contrast imaging is a potential nondestructive testing and diagnostic technology in medicine, biology and materials science. It provides high sensitivity and contrast of weakly absorbing Iow-Z objects by measuring phase shifts of the X-rays. In this paper, we propose a novel phase-contrast imaging method using only one absorption grating and a high-resolution detector. The intensity distribution downstream of the grating is recorded and analyzed by the high-resolution detector directly. We use a spatial phase demodulation method to retrieve the phase information. Only one image is needed. Numerical simulations are performed to validate that the setup of our method is greatly simplified compared with the phase-stepping method and our method can significantly reduce the time-consuming and the unnecessary dose.
