Heavy metal pollution such as cadmium and arsenic in water seriously threatens human health and safety, and the removal of Cd/As combined pollution is more difficult. In this work, the performance of mechanically activated calcite composite FeSO4 to remove Cd/As combined pollution was investigated by Cd/As combined pollution removal test in water. It was found that mechanically activated calcite can significantly improve the removal efficiency of Cd/As combined pollution in water. The results showed that the removal rate of Cd and As can reach 99% in 30 min by activated calcite composite FeSO4. The removal mechanism of Cd/As combined pollution in water by activated calcite and FeSO4 was studied by SEM-EDS, XPS, and XRD. The results showed that the crystallinity and dissolution activity of calcite were changed by mechanical activation, and the hydrolysis of calcite to produce CO32- and OH- was enhanced. OH- promoted the formation of a stable iron oxide bound precipitate of FeSO4 with arsenic, and CO32- binded with cadmium to form a stable precipitate of cadmium carbonate.

Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), an economically significant species in the Rhamnaceae family, is a popular fruit tree in Asia. The sugar and acid concentrations in jujube are considerably higher than those in other plants. Due to the low kernel rate, it is extremely difficult to establish hybrid populations. Little is known about jujube evolution and domestication, particularly with regard to the role of the sugar and acid components of jujube. Therefore, we used cover net control as a hybridization technique for the cross-breeding of Ziziphus jujuba Mill and ‘JMS2’ and (Z. acido jujuba) ‘Xing16’ to obtain an F1 population (179 hybrid progeny). The sugar and acid levels in the F1 and parent fruit were determined by HPLC. The coefficient of variation ranged from 28.4 to 93.9%. The sucrose and quinic acid levels in the progeny were higher than those in the parents. The population showed continuous distributions with transgressive segregation on both sides. Analysis by the mixed major gene and polygene inheritance model was performed. It was found that glucose is controlled by one additive-dominant major gene and polygenes, malic acid is controlled by two additive-dominant major genes and polygenes, and oxalic acid and quinic acid are controlled by two additive-dominant-epistatic major genes and polygenes. The results of this study provide insights into the genetic predisposition and molecular mechanisms underlying the role of sugar acids in jujube fruit.

A superior cultivar of dried jujube in China is 'Huizao' (HZ) jujube. Nonetheless, detailed evaluations of the texture quality of HZ fruit have been the subject of few studies. Texture is a significant indicator of the sensory and processed quality of a fruit. Here, we differentiate and characterize the texture quality of HZ fruit from the four primary producing regions in southern Xinjiang, as well as develop a system for assessing the texture quality of HZ fruit. Correlation investigation indicated strong relationships between the springiness, chewiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and hardness of HZ fruit. Furthermore, according to the factor molecules, the texture quality of HZ fruit in the four production areas was evaluated as Bazhou (1.24) > Hotan (0.773) > Kashi (−0.577) > Aksu (−0.852). RDA analysis of six texture quality parameters and 24 climate conditions identified higher mean temperature (TEM) and lower relative humidity (RHU) as the primary factors contributing to the improved texture quality of HZ fruit in Xinjiang. This study identified the variations in the texture of HZ fruit in the four primary producing regions of Southern Xinjiang. The HZ fruit in Hotan and Bazhou exhibit superior springiness and stickiness, while the fruit in Aksu and Kashi exhibit greater hardness. The texture of HZ fruit is significantly influenced by springiness, hardness, and adhesiveness, and a comprehensive evaluation model has been established through this research. This will provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the dominant producing areas and regional production of HZ varieties in Xinjiang. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This multicenter prospective cohort study (registration no. ChiCTR2000032089) aimed to investigate the relationship between saliva and plasma levetiracetam concentrations to determine whether saliva could be used for routine monitoring of levetiracetam during pregnancy. Methods: The slot concentrations of levetiracetam in simultaneously obtained saliva and plasma samples were measured using UPLC–MS/MS. The correlations between saliva and plasma levetiracetam concentrations and the dose‐normalized concentrations were compared among pregnant women in different stages and nonpregnant control participants with epilepsy. Results: In total, 231 patients with 407 plasma and saliva sample pairs were enrolled from 39 centers. Linear relationships between salivary and plasma levetiracetam concentrations were reported in the enrolled population (r = 0.898, p < 0.001), including pregnant (r = 0.935, p < 0.001) and nonpregnant participants (r = 0.882, p < 0.001). Plasma concentrations were moderately higher than saliva concentrations, with ratios of saliva to plasma concentrations of 0.98 for nonpregnant women, 0.98, 1, and 1.12 for pregnant women during the first trimester, the second trimester, the and third trimester, respectively. The effective range of saliva levetiracetam concentration was found to be 9.98 μg/mL (lower limit) with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.937 (95% confidence intervals, 0.915–0.959), sensitivity of 88.9%, specificity of 86.8%, and p < 0.001, to 24.05 μg/mL (upper limit) with an AUC of 0.952 (0.914–0.99), sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 92.3%, and p = 0.007. Conclusion: The saliva/plasma concentration ratio of levetiracetam remains constant during pregnancy and is similar to that in non‐pregnant individuals. Monitoring levetiracetam concentration in saliva during pregnancy should be widely promoted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
