The stellar masses of galaxies are measured using integrated light via several methods -- however, few of these methods were designed for low-mass ($M_{\star}\lesssim10^{8}\rm{M_{\odot}}$) "dwarf" galaxies, whose properties (e.g., stochastic star formation, low metallicity) pose unique challenges for estimating stellar masses. In this work, we quantify the precision and accuracy at which stellar masses of low-mass galaxies can be recovered using UV/optical/IR photometry. We use mock observations of 469 low-mass galaxies from a variety of models, including both semi-empirical models (GRUMPY, UniverseMachine-SAGA) and cosmological baryonic zoom-in simulations (MARVELous Dwarfs and FIRE-2), to test literature color-$M_\star/L$ relations and multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) mass estimators. We identify a list of "best practices" for measuring stellar masses of low-mass galaxies from integrated photometry. These include updated prescriptions for stellar mass based on $g-r$ color and WISE 3.4 $\mu$m luminosity, which are less systematically biased than literature calibrations and can recover true stellar masses of low-mass galaxies with $\sim0.1$ dex precision. When using SED fitting to estimate stellar mass, we find that the form of the assumed star formation history can induce significant biases: parametric SFHs can underestimate stellar mass by as much as $\sim0.4$ dex, while non-parametric SFHs recover true stellar masses with insignificant offset ($-0.03\pm0.11$ dex). We investigate the impact of galactic disks on the tidal stripping of cold dark matter subhalos within Milky Way (MW)-mass halos ($M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{12}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) using a new simulation suite, EDEN. By re-simulating 45 MW-mass zoom-in halos from the N-body Symphony compilation with embedded disk potentials, which evolve according to star formation histories predicted by the UniverseMachine model, we self-consistently tie disk growth to halo accretion rate and significantly expand the range of disk masses and formation histories studied. We use the particle-tracking-based subhalo finder Symfind to enhance the robustness of subhalo tracking. We find that disks near the median disk-to-halo mass ratio of our sample ($M_{\ast, \rm Disk}/M_{\rm vir, host} = 2\%$) reduce subhalo peak mass functions within 100 kpc by about $10\%$ for peak masses above $ 10^8\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. Heavier, MW/M31-like disks ($M_{\ast, \rm Disk}/M_{\rm vir, host} \gtrsim 5\%$) lead to a reduction of more than $40\%$. Subhalo abundance suppression is more pronounced near halo centers, with particularly enhanced stripping for subhalos accreted over 8 Gyr ago on orbits with pericenters < 100 kpc. Suppression is further amplified when disk mass is increased within fixed halo and disk assembly histories. In all cases, the suppression we measure should be interpreted as stripping below the mass resolution limit rather than complete subhalo disruption. Environment plays a critical role in shaping the assembly of low-mass galaxies. Here, we use the UniverseMachine (UM) galaxy-halo connection framework and the Data Release 3 of the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) Survey to place dwarf galaxy star formation and quenching into a cosmological context. UM is a data-driven forward model that flexibly parameterizes galaxy star formation rates (SFR) using only halo mass and assembly history. We add a new quenching model to UM, tailored for galaxies with stellar masses $\lesssim 10^9$ solar masses, and constrain the model down to a stellar mass $\gtrsim 10^7$ solar masses using new SAGA observations of 101 satellite systems around Milky Way (MW)-mass hosts and a sample of isolated field galaxies in a similar mass range from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The new best-fit model, 'UM-SAGA,' reproduces the satellite stellar mass functions, average SFRs, and quenched fractions in SAGA satellites while keeping isolated dwarfs mostly star forming. The enhanced quenching in satellites relative to isolated field galaxies leads the model to maximally rely on halo assembly to explain the observed environmental quenching. Extrapolating the model down to a stellar mass $\sim 10^{6.5}$ solar masses yields a quenched fraction of $\gtrsim$ 30% for isolated field galaxies and $\gtrsim$ 80% for satellites of MW-mass hosts at this stellar mass. We present the star-forming properties of 378 satellite galaxies around 101 Milky Way analogs in the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) Survey, focusing on the environmental processes that suppress or quench star formation. In the SAGA stellar mass range of 10^6 to 10^10 solar masses, we present quenched fractions, star-forming rates, gas-phase metallicities, and gas content. The fraction of SAGA satellites that are quenched increases with decreasing stellar mass and shows significant system-to-system scatter. SAGA satellite quenched fractions are highest in the central 100 kpc of their hosts and decline out to the virial radius. Splitting by specific star formation rate (sSFR), the least star-forming satellite quartile follows the radial trend of the quenched population. The median sSFR of star-forming satellites increases with decreasing stellar mass and is roughly constant with projected radius. Star-forming SAGA satellites are consistent with the star formation rate--stellar mass relationship determined in the Local Volume, while the median gas-phase metallicity is higher and median HI gas mass is lower at all stellar masses. We investigate the dependence of the satellite quenched fraction on host properties. Quenched fractions are higher in systems with larger host halo mass, but this trend is only seen in the inner 100 kpc; we do not see significant trends with host color or star formation rate. Our results suggest that lower mass satellites and satellites inside 100 kpc are more efficiently quenched in a Milky Way-like environment, with these processes acting sufficiently slowly to preserve a population of star-forming satellites at all stellar masses and projected radii., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. We present the third Data Release (DR3) of the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) Survey, a spectroscopic survey characterizing satellite galaxies around Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. The SAGA Survey DR3 includes 378 satellites identified across 101 MW-mass systems in the distance range 25-40.75 Mpc, and an accompanying redshift catalog of background galaxies (including about 46,000 taken by SAGA) in the SAGA footprint of 84.7 sq. deg. The number of confirmed satellites per system ranges from zero to 13, in the stellar mass range 10^6 to 10^10 solar masses. Based on a detailed completeness model, this sample accounts for 94% of the true satellite population down to a stellar mass of 10^7.5 solar masses. We find that the mass of the most massive satellite in SAGA systems is the strongest predictor of satellite abundance; one-third of the SAGA systems contain LMC-mass satellites, and they tend to have more satellites than the MW. The SAGA satellite radial distribution is less concentrated than the MW, and the SAGA quenched fraction below 10^8.5 solar masses is lower than the MW, but in both cases, the MW is within 1 sigma of SAGA system-to-system scatter. SAGA satellites do not exhibit a clear corotating signal as has been suggested in the MW/M31 satellite systems. Emission line galaxies (ELGs) are now the preeminent tracers of large-scale structure at z>0.8 due to their high density and strong emission lines, which enable accurate redshift measurements. However, relatively little is known about ELG evolution and the ELG-halo connection, exposing us to potential modeling systematics in cosmology inference using these sources. In this paper, we propose a physical picture of ELGs and improve ELG-halo connection modeling using a variety of observations and simulated galaxy models. We investigate DESI-selected ELGs in COSMOS data, and infer that ELGs are rapidly star-forming galaxies with a large fraction exhibiting disturbed morphology, implying that many of them are likely to be merger-driven starbursts. We further postulate that the tidal interactions from mergers lead to correlated star formation in central-satellite ELG pairs, a phenomenon dubbed "conformity." We argue for the need to include conformity in the ELG-halo connection using galaxy models such as IllustrisTNG, and by combining observations such as the DESI ELG auto-correlation, ELG cross-correlation with Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), and ELG-cluster cross-correlation. A major question in $\Lambda$CDM is what this theory actually predicts for the properties of subhalo populations. Subhalos are difficult to simulate and to find within simulations, and this propagates into uncertainty in theoretical predictions for satellite galaxies. We present Symfind, a new particle-tracking-based subhalo finder, and demonstrate that it can track subhalos to orders-of-magnitude lower masses than commonly used halo-finding tools, with a focus on Rockstar and consistent-trees. These longer survival mean that at a fixed peak subhalo mass, we find $\approx 15\%{-}40\%$ more subhalos within the virial radius, $R_\textrm{vir}$, and $\approx 35\%-120\%$ more subhalos within $R_\textrm{vir}/4$ in the Symphony dark-matter-only simulation suite. More subhalos are found as resolution is increased. We perform extensive numerical testing. In agreement with idealized simulations, we show that the $v_{\rm max}$ of subhalos is only resolved at high resolutions ($n_\textrm{peak}\gtrsim3\times 10^4$), but that mass loss itself can be resolved at much more modest particle counts ($n_\textrm{peak}\gtrsim4\times 10^3$). We show that Rockstar converges to false solutions for the mass function, radial distribution, and disruption masses of subhalos. We argue that our new method can trace resolved subhalos until the point of typical galaxy disruption without invoking ``orphan'' modeling. We outline a concrete set of steps for determining whether other subhalo finders meet the same criteria. We investigate how feedback and environment shapes the X-ray scaling relations of early-type galaxies (ETGs), especially at the low-mass end. We select central-ETGs from the IllustrisTNG-100 box that have stellar masses $\log_{10}(M_{\ast}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}})\in[10.7, 11.9]$. We derive mock X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$) and spectroscopic-like temperature ($T_{\mathrm{sl, 500}}$) of hot gas within $R_{500}$ of the ETG haloes using the MOCK-X pipeline. The scaling between $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$ and the total mass within 5 effective radii ($M_{5R_{\rm e}}$) agrees well with observed ETGs from Chandra. IllustrisTNG reproduces the observed increase in scatter of $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$ towards lower masses, and we find that ETGs with $\log_{10} (M_{5R_{\rm e}}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}) \leqslant 11.5$ with above-average $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$ experienced systematically lower cumulative kinetic AGN feedback energy historically (vice versa for below-average ETGs). This leads to larger gas mass fractions and younger stellar populations with stronger stellar feedback heating, concertedly resulting in the above-average $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$. The $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$--$T_{\mathrm{sl, 500}}$ relation shows a similar slope to the observed ETGs but the simulation systematically underestimates the gas temperature. Three outliers that lie far below the $L_{\rm X}$--$T_{\rm sl}$ relation all interacted with larger galaxy clusters recently and demonstrate clear features of environmental heating. We propose that the distinct location of these backsplash ETGs in the $L_{\rm X}$--$T_{\rm sl}$ plane could provide a new way of identifying backsplash galaxies in future X-ray surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Recent studies illustrate the correlation between the angular momenta of cosmic structures and their Lagrangian properties. However, only baryons are observable and it is unclear whether they reliably trace the cosmic angular momenta. We study the Lagrangian mass distribution, spin correlation, and predictability of dark matter, gas, and stellar components of galaxy-halo systems using IllustrisTNG, and show that the primordial segregations between components are typically small. Their protoshapes are also similar in terms of the statistics of moment of inertia tensors. Under the common gravitational potential they are expected to exert the same tidal torque and the strong spin correlations are not destroyed by the nonlinear evolution and complicated baryonic effects, as confirmed by the high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations. We further show that their late-time angular momenta traced by total gas, stars, or the central galaxies, can be reliably reconstructed by the initial perturbations. We present Symphony, a compilation of $262$ cosmological, cold-dark-matter-only zoom-in simulations spanning four decades of host halo mass, from $10^{11}$$-$$10^{15}~M_{\mathrm{\odot}}$. This compilation includes three existing simulation suites at the cluster and Milky Way$-$mass scales, and two new suites: $39$ Large Magellanic Cloud-mass ($10^{11}~M_{\mathrm{\odot}}$) and $49$ strong-lens-analog ($10^{13}~M_{\mathrm{\odot}}$) group-mass hosts. Across the entire host halo mass range, the highest-resolution regions in these simulations are resolved with a dark matter particle mass of $\approx 3\times 10^{-7}$ times the host virial mass and a Plummer-equivalent gravitational softening length of $\approx 9\times 10^{-4}$ times the host virial radius, on average. We measure correlations between subhalo abundance and host concentration, formation time, and maximum subhalo mass, all of which peak at the Milky Way host halo mass scale. Subhalo abundances are $\approx 50\%$ higher in clusters than in lower-mass hosts at fixed sub-to-host halo mass ratios. Subhalo radial distributions are approximately self-similar as a function of host mass and are less concentrated than hosts' underlying dark matter distributions. We compare our results to the semianalytic model $\mathrm{\texttt{Galacticus}}$, which predicts subhalo mass functions with a higher normalization at the low-mass end and radial distributions that are slightly more concentrated than Symphony. We use $\mathrm{\texttt{UniverseMachine}}$ to model halo and subhalo star formation histories in Symphony, and we demonstrate that these predictions resolve the formation histories of the halos that host nearly all currently observable satellite galaxies in the universe. Distances to the $k$-nearest-neighbor ($k$NN) data points from volume-filling query points are a sensitive probe of spatial clustering. Here we present the first application of $k$NN summary statistics to observational clustering measurement, using the 1000 richest redMaPPer clusters ($0.1\leqslant z\leqslant 0.3$) from the SDSS DR8 catalog. A clustering signal is defined as a difference in the cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of $k$NN distances from fixed query points to the observed clusters versus a set of unclustered random points. We find that the $k=1,2$-NN CDFs of redMaPPer deviate significantly from the randoms' across scales of 35 to 155 Mpc, which is a robust signature of clustering. In addition to $k$NN, we also measure the two-point correlation function for the same set of redMaPPer clusters versus random points, which shows a noisier and less significant clustering signal within the same radial scales. Quantitatively, the $\chi^2$ distribution for both the $k$NN-CDFs and the two-point correlation function measured on the randoms peak at $\chi^2\sim 50$ (null hypothesis), whereas the $k$NN-CDFs ($\chi^2\sim 300$, $p = 1.54\times 10^{-36}$) pick up a much more significant clustering signal than the two-point function ($\chi^2\sim 100$, $p = 1.16\times 10^{-6}$) when measured on redMaPPer. Finally, the measured 3NN and 4NN CDFs deviate from the predicted $k=3, 4$-NN CDFs assuming an ideal Gaussian field, indicating a non-Gaussian clustering signal for redMaPPer clusters, although its origin might not be cosmological due to observational systematics. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) possess total density profiles close to isothermal, which can lead to non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity dispersion (LOSVD) under anisotropic stellar orbits. However, recent observations of local ETGs in the MASSIVE Survey reveal outer kinematic structures at $1.5 R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ (effective radius) that are inconsistent with fixed isothermal density profiles; the authors proposed varying density profiles as an explanation. We aim to verify this conjecture and understand the influence of stellar assembly on these kinematic features through mock ETGs in IllustrisTNG. We create mock Integral-Field-Unit observations to extract projected stellar kinematic features for 207 ETGs with stellar mass $M_{\ast}\geqslant 10^{11} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ in TNG100-1. The mock observations reproduce the key outer ($1.5R_{\mathrm{eff}}$) kinematic structures in the MASSIVE ETGs, including the puzzling positive correlation between velocity dispersion profile outer slope $\gamma_{\mathrm{outer}}$ and the kurtosis $h_{4}$'s gradient. We find that $h_{4}$ is uncorrelated with stellar orbital anisotropy beyond $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$; instead we find that the variations in $\gamma_{\mathrm{outer}}$ and outer $h_{4}$ (a good proxy for $h_{4}$ gradient) are both driven by variations of the density profile at the outskirts across different ETGs. These findings corroborate the proposed conjecture and rule out velocity anisotropy as the origin of non-Gaussian outer kinematic structure in ETGs. We also find that the outer kurtosis and anisotropy correlate with different stellar assembly components, with the former related to minor mergers or flyby interactions while the latter is mainly driven by major mergers, suggesting distinct stellar assembly origins that decorrelates the two quantities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages, 11 figures. Galaxy morphologies, kinematics, and stellar populations are thought to be linked to each other. However, both simulations and observations have pointed out mismatches therein. In this work, we study the nature and origin of the present-day quenched, bulge-dominated, but dynamically cold galaxies within a stellar mass range of $10.3\,\leqslant\,\log\,M_{\ast}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}\,\leqslant\,11.2$ in the IllustrisTNG-100 Simulation. We compare these galaxies with a population of normal star-forming dynamically cold disc galaxies and a population of normal quenched dynamically hot elliptical galaxies within the same mass range. The populations of the present-day quenched and bulge-dominated galaxies (both being dynamically cold and hot) used to have significantly higher star-formation rates and flatter morphologies at redshift of $z\sim 2$. They have experienced more frequent larger mass-ratio mergers below $z \sim 0.7$ in comparison to their star-forming disc counterparts, which is responsible for the formation of their bulge-dominated morphologies. The dynamically cold populations (both being star-forming and quenched) have experienced more frequent prograde and tangential mergers especially below $z \sim 1$, in contrast to the dynamically hot ellipticals, which have had more retrograde and radial mergers. Such different merging histories can well explain the differences on the cold and hot dynamical status among these galaxies. We point out that the real-world counterparts of these dynamically cold and hot bulge-dominated quenched populations are the fast- and slow-rotating early-type galaxies, respectively, as seen in observations and hence reveal the different evolution paths of these two distinct populations of early-type galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We apply the empirical galaxy--halo connection model UniverseMachine to dark matter-only zoom-in simulations of isolated Milky Way (MW)--mass halos along with their parent cosmological simulations. This application extends \textsc{UniverseMachine} predictions into the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy regime ($ 10^{2}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}} \leqslant M_{\ast} \leqslant 10^{5}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) and yields a well-resolved stellar mass--halo mass (SMHM) relation over the peak halo mass range $10^8\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ to $10^{15}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. The extensive dynamic range provided by the zoom-in simulations allows us to assess specific aspects of dwarf galaxy evolution predicted by \textsc{UniverseMachine}. In particular, although UniverseMachine is not constrained for dwarf galaxies with $M_* \lesssim 10^{8}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, our predicted SMHM relation is consistent with that inferred for MW satellite galaxies at $z=0$ using abundance matching. However, UniverseMachine predicts that nearly all galaxies are actively star forming below $M_{\ast}\sim 10^{7}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and that these systems typically form more than half of their stars at $z\lesssim 4$, which is discrepant with the star formation histories of Local Group dwarf galaxies that favor early quenching. This indicates that the current UniverseMachine model does not fully capture galaxy quenching physics at the low-mass end. A key feature of a large population of low-mass, late-type disk galaxies are star-forming disks with exponential light distributions. They are typically also associated with thin and flat morphologies, blue colors, and dynamically cold stars moving along circular orbits within co-planar thin gas disks. However, the latter features do not necessarily always imply the former, in fact, a variety of different kinematic configurations do exist. In this work, we use the cosmological hydrodynamical IllustrisTNG Simulation to study the nature and origin of dynamically hot, sometimes even counter-rotating, star-forming disk galaxies in the lower stellar mass range (between $5\times 10^9\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $2\times 10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$). We find that being dynamically hot arises in most cases as an induced transient state, for example due to galaxy interactions and merger activities, rather than as an age-dependent evolutionary phase of star-forming disk galaxies. The dynamically hot but still actively star-forming disks show a common feature of hosting kinematically misaligned gas and stellar disks, and centrally concentrated on-going star formation. The former is often accompanied by disturbed gas morphologies, while the latter is reflected in low gas and stellar spins in comparison to their dynamically cold, normal disk counterparts. Interestingly, observed galaxies from MaNGA with kinematic misalignment between gas and stars show remarkably similar general properties as the IllustrisTNG galaxies, and therefore are plausible real-world counterparts. It is believed that massive galaxies have quenched their star formation because of active galactic nucleus feedback. However, recent studies have shown that some massive galaxies are still forming stars. We analyze the morphology of star formation regions for galaxies of stellar mass larger than 10$^{11.3}$ M$_{\odot}$ at around redshift $z_r=0.5$ using $u-z$ color images. We find that about $20\%$ of the massive galaxies are star-forming (SF) galaxies, and most of them ($\sim 85\%$) have asymmetric structures induced by recent mergers. Moreover, for these asymmetric galaxies, we find that the asymmetry of the SF regions becomes larger for bluer galaxies. Using the Illustris simulation, we can qualitatively reproduce the observed relation between asymmetry parameter and color. Furthermore, using the merger trees in the simulation, we find a correlation between the color of the main branch galaxies at $z_r=0.5$ and the sum of the Star Formation Rates (SFRs) of the recently accreted galaxies, which implies that star formation of the accreted galaxies has contributed to the observed star formation of the massive (host) galaxies (ex situ star formation). Furthermore, we find two blue and symmetric galaxies, candidates for massive blue disks, in our observed sample, which indicates that about $\sim 10\%$ of massive SF galaxies are forming stars in the normal mode of disk star formation (in situ star formation). We study the evolutionary trend of the total density profile of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in IllustrisTNG. To this end, we trace ETGs from $z=0$ to $z=4$ and measure the power-law slope $\gamma^{\prime}$ of the total density profile for their main progenitors. We find that their $\gamma^{\prime}$ steepen on average during $z\sim4-2$, then becoming shallower until $z=1$, after which they remain almost constant, aside from a residual trend of becoming shallower towards $z=0$. We also compare to a statistical sample of ETGs at different redshifts, selected based on their luminosity profiles and stellar masses. Due to different selection effects, the average slopes of the statistical samples follow a modified evolutionary trend. They monotonically decrease since $z=3$, and after $z\approx 1$, they remain nearly invariant with a mild increase towards $z=0$. These evolutionary trends are mass-dependent for both samples, with low-mass galaxies having in general steeper slopes than their more massive counterparts. Galaxies that transitioned to ETGs more recently have steeper mean slopes as they tend to be smaller and more compact at any given redshift. By analyzing the impact of mergers and AGN feedback on the progenitors' evolution, we conjecture a multi-phase path leading to isothermality in ETGs: dissipation associated with rapid wet mergers tends to steepen $\gamma^{\prime}$ from $z=4$ to $z=2$, whereas subsequent AGN feedback (especially in the kinetic mode) makes $\gamma^{\prime}$ shallower again from $z=2$ to $z=1$. Afterwards, passive evolution from $z=1$ to $z=0$, mainly through gas-poor mergers, mildly decreases $\gamma^{\prime}$ and maintains the overall mass distribution close to isothermal., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We investigate the fundamental plane (FP) evolution of early-type galaxies in the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation (TNG100) from redshift $z=0$ to $z=2$. We find that a tight plane relation already exists as early as $z=2$. Its scatter stays as low as $\sim 0.08$ dex across this redshift range. Both slope parameters $b$ and $c$ (where $R \propto \sigma^b I^c$ with $R$, $\sigma$, and $I$ being the typical size, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness) of the plane evolve mildly since $z=2$, roughly consistent with observations. The FP residual $\rm Res$ ($\equiv\,a\,+\,b\log \sigma\,+\,c\log I\,-\,\log R$, where $a$ is the zero point of the FP) is found to strongly correlate with stellar age, indicating that stellar age can be used as a crucial fourth parameter of the FP. However, we find that $4c+b+2=\delta$, where $\delta \sim 0.8$ for FPs in TNG, rather than zero as is typically inferred from observations. This implies that a tight power-law relation between the dynamical mass-to-light ratio $M_{\rm dyn}/L$ and the dynamical mass $M_{\rm dyn}$ (where $M_{\rm dyn}\equiv 5\sigma^2R/G$, with $G$ being the gravitational constant) is not present in the TNG100 simulation. Recovering such a relation requires proper mixing between dark matter and baryons, as well as star formation occurring with correct efficiencies at the right mass scales. We derive the mass weighted total density slopes within the effective (half-light) radius, $\gamma'$, for more than 2000 nearby galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey using Jeans-anisotropic-models applied to IFU observations. Our galaxies span a wide range of the stellar mass ($10^9$ $M_{\rm \odot}< M_* < 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) and the velocity dispersion (30 km/s $< \sigma_v <$ 300 km/s). We find that for galaxies with velocity dispersion $\sigma_v>100$ km/s, the density slope has a mean value $\langle \gamma^{\prime} \rangle = 2.24$ and a dispersion $\sigma_{\gamma}=0.22$, almost independent of velocity dispersion. A clear turn over in the $\gamma'-\sigma_v$ relation is present at $\sigma\sim 100$ km/s, below which the density slope decreases rapidly with $\sigma_v$. Our analysis shows that a large fraction of dwarf galaxies (below $M_* = 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) have total density slopes shallower than 1, which implies that they may reside in cold dark matter halos with shallow density slopes. We compare our results with that of galaxies in hydrodynamical simulations of EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG projects, and find all simulations predict shallower density slopes for massive galaxies with high $\sigma_v$. Finally, we explore the dependence of $\gamma'$ on the positions of galaxies in halos, namely centrals vs. satellites, and find that for the same velocity dispersion, the amplitude of $\gamma'$ is higher for satellite galaxies by about 0.1., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We explore the isothermal total density profiles of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the IllustrisTNG simulation. For the selected 559 ETGs at $z = 0$ with stellar mass $10^{10.7}\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \leqslant M_{\ast} \leqslant 10^{11.9}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, the total power-law slope has a mean of $\langle\gamma^{\prime}\rangle = 2.011 \pm 0.007$ and a scatter of $\sigma_{\gamma^{\prime}} = 0.171$ over the radial range 0.4 to 4 times the stellar half mass radius. Several correlations between $\gamma^{\prime}$ and galactic properties including stellar mass, effective radius, stellar surface density, central velocity dispersion, central dark matter fraction and in-situ-formed stellar mass ratio are compared to observations and other simulations, revealing that IllustrisTNG reproduces many correlation trends, and in particular, $\gamma^{\prime}$ is almost constant with redshift below $z = 2$. Through analyzing IllustrisTNG model variations we show that black hole kinetic winds are crucial to lowering $\gamma^{\prime}$ and matching observed galaxy correlations. The effects of stellar winds on $\gamma^{\prime}$ are subdominant compared to AGN feedback, and differ due to the presence of AGN feedback from previous works. The density profiles of the ETG dark matter halos are well-described by steeper-than-NFW profiles, and they are steeper in the full physics (FP) run than their counterparts in the dark matter only (DMO) run. Their inner density slopes anti-correlates (remain constant) with the halo mass in the FP (DMO) run, and anti-correlates with the halo concentration parameter $c_{200}$ in both types of runs. The dark matter halos of low-mass ETGs are contracted whereas high-mass ETGs are expanded, suggesting that variations in the total density profile occur through the different halo responses to baryons., Comment: 31 pages, 20 figures, 9 tables.
