Abstract

In response to the development requirements of small-sized gaseous tritium light sources, a wet coating and sintering process for preparing micron-sized ZnS(Cu) phosphors coatings on the inner wall of a slender glass tube was independently developed. And a coating device with controllable pressure, flow and temperature was designed and established. The coating device was used to explore the preparation process of fluorescent coatings for slender glass tubes with a specification of φ1.1 mm×550 mm, and to carry out research on the influence of slurry formulations on the viscosity of mixed liquid formulations and coating thickness. By optimizing the drying parameters, the coating was finally obtained in the slender glass tube. The cross-sectional SEM analysis shows that the coating has good compactness, and its thickness is (16.9±0.6) μm(n=32). The coating has good uniformity in thickness and is stable and does not fall off after being placed for a long time. The luminescence brightness of the tritium light tube sample obtained by this process is 0.642 cd/m2, with excellent uniformity. This provides a basis for device conditions and process optimization for the development of subsequent tritium light source products.

Abstract

Studying the physical properties of materials under high pressure and temperature through experiments is difficult. Theoretical simulations can compensate for this deficiency. Currently, large-scale simulations using machine learning force fields are gaining popularity. As an important nuclear energy material, the evolution of the physical properties of uranium under extreme conditions is still unclear. Herein, we trained an accurate machine learning force field on alpha-U and predicted the lattice dynamics and elastic properties at high pressures and temperatures. The force field agrees well with the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and experimental results, and it exhibits higher accuracy than classical potentials. Based on the high-temperature lattice dynamics study, we first present the temperature-pressure range in which the Kohn anomalous behavior of the ${\Sigma}$4 optical mode exists. Phonon spectral function analysis showed that the phonon anharmonicity of alpha-U is very weak. We predict that the single-crystal elastic constants C44, C55, C66, polycrystalline modulus (E,G), and polycrystalline sound velocity ($C_L$,$C_S$) have strong heating-induced softening. All the elastic moduli exhibited compression-induced hardening behavior. The Poisson's ratio shows that it is difficult to compress alpha-U at high pressures and temperatures. Moreover, we observed that the material becomes substantially more anisotropic at high pressures and temperatures. The accurate predictions of alpha-U demonstrate the reliability of the method. 15. LEPPA: A Teaching Modality of Biotechnology Course for Postgraduate Students in Biomedical Majors

Abstract

Teaching biomedical technology is critical for the success of research of both domestic and international postgraduate students (DPSs and IPSs). However, difference in the learning characteristics between the two cohorts as well as appropriate teaching modality remains largely unexplored. In the present work, we studied these issues by recruiting 33 IPSs and 32 DPSs who selected the course of 'Patch-Clamp Technique and Its Application in Life Science Research' at Harbin Medical University in China in 2019. Questionnaires were performed to investigate their learning obstacles and style preferences. Correspondingly, we designed a new teaching modality, i.e. lecture enriched with practicum, research proposal and post-course advice (LEPPA in brief) and tested its effect. This modality was positively evaluated by all the IPSs and 90% of the DPSs. The LEPPA can efficiently resolve the concerns of both IPSs and DPSs while promoting their transition from undergraduates to research students.

38. TESOT: A Teaching Modality Targeting the Learning Obstacles in Global Medical Education

Abstract

In higher education, it is a great challenge for instructors to teach international medical students (IMSs) efficiently. These students usually have different learning obstacles and learning style preferences from domestic students. Thus it is necessary to use teaching modalities targeting the specific characteristics of IMSs. Accordingly, we have developed a teaching modality composed of classical teacher-centered approach (TCA), enriched with components of student-centered approach (SCA) and online interactions targeting the learning characteristics of IMSs, which we defined as TESOT (an acronym made of the underlined words' initials). Aside from the online interactions that provide both answers to questions raised by students and guidance throughout a course, this modality contains additional in-classroom components (i.e., pre-lecture quiz, student-led summary, and post-lecture quiz). The effectiveness of this modality was tested in the nervous system module of the Physiology course for IMSs. The final exam scores in the nervous system module in the year taught with TESOT were higher than those earned by students taught with a classical TCA modality in preceding 2 yr. The improvement of teaching effectiveness is attributable to increasing communication, bridging course contexts, and meeting diverse learning style preferences. These results indicate that TESOT as an effective teaching modality is useful for enhancing efficiency of teaching IMSs.
