In this article, we formulate a monolithic optimal control method for general time-dependent Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) systems with large solid deformation. We consider a displacement-tracking type of objective with a constraint of the solid velocity, tackle the time-dependent control problems by a piecewise-in-time control, cope with large solid displacement using a one-velocity fictitious domain method, and solve the fully-coupled FSI and the corresponding adjoint equations in a monolithic manner. We implement the proposed method in the open-source software package FreeFEM++ and assess it by three numerical experiments, in the aspects of stability of the numerical scheme for different regularisation parameters, and efficiency of reducing the objective function with control of the solid velocity.

This paper presents an efficient methodology for the robust optimisation of Continuous Flow Polymerase Chain Reaction (CFPCR) devices. It enables the effects of uncertainties in device geometry, due to manufacturing tolerances, on the competing objectives of minimising the temperature deviations within the CFPCR thermal zones, together with minimising the pressure drop across the device, to be explored. We first validate that our training data from conjugate heat transfer simulations of the CFPCR thermal flow problems is noise free and then combine a deterministic surrogate model, based on the mean of a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) simulator, with Polynomial Chaos Expansions (PCE) to propagate the manufacturing uncertainties in the geometry design variables into the optimisation outputs. The resultant probabilistic model is used to solve a series of robust optimisation problems. The influence of the robust problem formulation and constraints on the design conservatism of the robust optima in comparison with the corresponding deterministic cases is explored briefly.

We introduce a novel approach to automatic unstructured mesh generation using machine learning to predict an optimal finite element mesh for a previously unseen problem. The framework that we have developed is based around training an artificial neural network (ANN) to guide standard mesh generation software, based upon a prediction of the required local mesh density throughout the domain. We describe the training regime that is proposed, based upon the use of \emph{a posteriori} error estimation, and discuss the topologies of the ANNs that we have considered. We then illustrate performance using two standard test problems, a single elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) and a system of PDEs associated with linear elasticity. We demonstrate the effective generation of high quality meshes for arbitrary polygonal geometries and a range of material parameters, using a variety of user-selected error norms., Comment: Accepted in International Conference on Computational Science 2020

In this article we present a one-field monolithic finite element method in the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation for Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems. The method only solves for one velocity field in the whole FSI domain, and it solves in a monolithic manner so that the fluid solid interface conditions are satisfied automatically. We prove that the proposed scheme is unconditionally stable, through energy analysis, by utilising a conservative formulation and an exact quadrature rule. We implement the algorithm using both ${\bf F}$-scheme and ${\bf d}$-scheme, and demonstrate that the former has the same formulation in two and three dimensions. Finally several numerical examples are presented to validate this methodology, including combination with remesh techniques to handle the case of very large solid displacement.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have enjoyed increasing adoption because of the global concerns about the petroleum dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. However, their limited driving range fosters the occurrence of charging requests deriving from EV drivers in urban road networks, which have significant uncertain characteristic from time dimension in the real-world situation. To tackle the challenge brought by the dynamic charging requests, this study is devoted to proposing optimal strategies to provide guidance for EV charging. The time-varying characteristic of road network is further involved in the problem formulation. Based on the charging request information, we propose two charging guidance strategies from different perspectives. One of the strategies considers the travel demands of EV drivers and uses the driving distance as the optimization criterion. In contrast, the other strategy focuses on the impacts of EV number on the charging station operation and service satisfaction. The reachable charging stations with minimum vehicle number are selected as the optimal ones. More importantly, both the strategies have the ability to ensure the reachability of selected charging stations in a time-varying road network. In addition, we conduct simulation examples to investigate the performance of the proposed charging guidance strategies. In this article we consider the widely used immersed finite element method (IFEM), in both explicit and implicit form, and its relationship to our more recent one-field fictitious domain method (FDM). We review and extend the formulation of these methods, based upon an operator splitting scheme, in order to demonstrate that both the explicit IFEM and the one-field FDM can be regarded as particular linearizations of the fully implicit IFEM. However, the one-field FDM can be shown to be more robust than the explicit IFEM and can simulate a wider range of solid parameters with a relatively large time step. In addition, it can produce results almost identical to the implicit IFEM but without iteration inside each time step. We study the effect on these methods of variations in viscosity and density of fluid and solid materials. The advantages of the one-field FDM within the IFEM framework are illustrated through a selection of parameter sets for two benchmark cases.

The distinguishing feature of this method is that it only solves for one velocity field for the whole fluid-structure domain; the interactions remain decoupled until solving the final linear algebraic equations. To achieve this the finite element procedures are carried out separately on two different meshes for the fluid and solid respectively, and the assembly of the final linear system brings the fluid and solid parts together via an isoparametric interpolation matrix between the two meshes. The weak formulations are introduced in the continuous case and after discretization in time. Then the stability is analyzed through an energy estimate. Finally, numerical examples are presented to validate the energy stability properties.

In this article, an implicit version of this approach is introduced. The property of energy conservation is proved, which is a strong indication of stability. The solvability and error estimate for the corresponding stationary problem (one time step of the transient problem) are analyzed. Finally, 2D and 3D numerical examples are presented to validate the conservation properties.

In this article, we present a one-field monolithic fictitious domain (FD) method for simulation of general fluid-structure interactions (FSI). One-field means only one velocity field is solved in the whole domain, based upon the use of an appropriate L2 projection. Monolithic means the fluid and solid equations are solved synchronously (rather than sequentially). We argue that the proposed method has the same generality and robustness as FD methods with distributed Lagrange multiplier (DLM) but is significantly more computationally efficient (because of one-field) whilst being very straightforward to implement. In this article, we present a new unified finite element method (UFEM) for simulation of general Fluid-Structure interaction (FSI) which has the same generality and robustness as monolithic methods but is significantly more computationally efficient and easier to implement. Our proposed approach has similarities with classical immersed finite element methods (IFEMs), by approximating a single velocity and pressure field in the entire domain (i.e. occupied by fluid and solid) on a single mesh, but differs by treating the corrections due to the solid deformation on the left-hand side of the modified fluid flow equations (i.e. implicitly). The method is described in detail, followed by the presentation of multiple computational examples in order to validate it across a wide range of fluid and solid parameters and interactions.
