The energy injected from dark matter annihilation and decay processes potentially raises the ionisation of the intergalactic medium and leaves visible footprints on the anisotropy maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Galactic foregrounds emission in the microwave bands contaminate the CMB measurement and may affect the search for dark matter's signature. In this paper, we construct a full CMB data and foreground simulation based on the design of the next-generation ground-based CMB experiments. The foreground residual after the components separation on maps is fully considered in our data analysis, accounting for various contamination from the emission of synchrotron, thermal dust, free-free and spinning dust. We analyse the corresponding sensitivity on dark matter parameters from the temperature and polarization maps, and we find that the CMB foregrounds leave a non-zero yet controllable impact on the sensitivity. Comparing with statistics-only analysis, the CMB foreground residual leads to a factor of at most 19% weakening on energy-injection constraints, depending on the specific dark matter process and experimental configuration. We review the surface flux transport model for the evolution of magnetic flux patterns on the Sun's surface. Our underlying motivation is to understand the model's prediction of the polar field (or axial dipole) strength at the end of the solar cycle. The main focus is on the "classical" model: namely, steady axisymmetric profiles for differential rotation and meridional flow, and uniform supergranular diffusion. Nevertheless, the review concentrates on recent advances, notably in understanding the roles of transport parameters and - in particular - the source term. We also discuss the physical justification for the surface flux transport model, along with efforts to incorporate radial diffusion, and conclude by summarizing the main directions where researchers have moved beyond the classical model., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) will revolutionize our ability to measure, understand and model the basic physical processes that control the structure and dynamics of the Sun and its atmosphere. The first-light DKIST images, released publicly on 29 January 2020, only hint at the extraordinary capabilities which will accompany full commissioning of the five facility instruments. With this Critical Science Plan (CSP) we attempt to anticipate some of what those capabilities will enable, providing a snapshot of some of the scientific pursuits that the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope hopes to engage as start-of-operations nears. The work builds on the combined contributions of the DKIST Science Working Group (SWG) and CSP Community members, who generously shared their experiences, plans, knowledge and dreams. Discussion is primarily focused on those issues to which DKIST will uniquely contribute.

On 2018 November 5, about 24 hours before the first close perihelion passage of Parker Solar Probe (PSP), a coronal mass ejection (CME) entered the field of view of the inner detector of the Wide-field Imager for Solar PRobe (WISPR) instrument onboard PSP, with the northward component of its trajectory carrying the leading edge of the CME off the top edge of the detector about four hours after its first appearance. We connect this event to a very small jet-like transient observed from 1 au by coronagraphs on both the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the A component of the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory mission (STEREO-A). This allows us to make the first three-dimensional reconstruction of a CME structure considering both observations made very close to the Sun and images from two observatories at 1 au. The CME may be small and jet-like as viewed from 1 au, but the close-in vantage point of PSP/WISPR demonstrates that it is not intrinsically jet-like, but instead has a structure consistent with a flux rope morphology. Based on its appearance in the SOHO and STEREO-A images, the event belongs in the "streamer blob" class of transients, but its kinematic behavior is very unusual, with a more impulsive acceleration than previously studied blobs., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement

The last solar minimum is characterized by several peculiar aspects and by the presence of a complex magnetic topology with two different kinds of coronal streamers: pseudo-streamers and bipolar streamers. Pseudo-streamers or unipolar streamer are coronal structures which separate coronal holes of the same polarity, without a current sheet in the outer corona; unlike bipolar streamer that separate coronal holes of opposite magnetic polarity. In this study, two examples of these structures have been identified in the period of Carrington rotation 2067, by applying a potential-field source-surface extrapolation of the photospheric field measurements. We present a spectroscopic analysis of a pseudo-streamer and a bipolar streamer observed in the period 12-17 March 2008 at high spectral and spatial resolution by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS; Kohl et al., 1995) onboard Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The solar wind plasma parameters, such as kinetic temperature, electron density and outflow velocity, are inferred in the extended corona (from 1.7 to 2.1 Rsun) analysing the O VI doublet and Ly alpha line spectra. The coronal magnetic topology is taken into account and has been extrapolated by a 3D magneto-hydrodynamic model of the global corona. The results of the analysis show some peculiarities of the pseudo-streamer physical parameters in comparison with those obtained for bipolar streamers: in particular, we have found higher kinetic temperature and higher outflow velocities of O VI ions and lower electron density values. In conclusion, we point out that pseudo-streamers produce a "hybrid" type of outflow that is intermediate between slow and fast solar wind and they are a possible source of slow/fast wind in not dipolar solar magnetic field configuration., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, in press in Solar Physics, 2015
