Abstract

Here we present a study of magnetism in \CTO\ anatase films grown by pulsed laser deposition under a variety of oxygen partial pressures and deposition rates. Energy-dispersive spectrometry and transition electron microscopy analyses indicate that a high deposition rate leads to a homogeneous microstructure, while very low rate or postannealing results in cobalt clustering. Depth resolved low-energy muon spin rotation experiments show that films grown at a low oxygen partial pressure ($\approx 10^{-6}$ torr) with a uniform structure are fully magnetic, indicating intrinsic ferromagnetism. First principles calculations identify the beneficial role of low oxygen partial pressure in the realization of uniform carrier-mediated ferromagnetism. Abstract

Ag3Sn intermetallic growth within Sn-Bi-Ag alloys during relatively slow cooling rates has a pronounced effect on the performance and reliability of solder joints. In this study, we combined experimental electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis with first-principles calculations to explore the crystal growth and faceting mechanisms of Ag3Sn intermetallic in solidifying Sn-xBi-1Ag (x = 10, 57 wt.%) alloys. Using EBSD techniques, accommodated for a pseudo-hexagonal setting of Ag3Sn to avoid pseudo-symmetry, and subsequent lattice transformation to an orthorhombic structure (a = 5.97 Å, b = 4.78 Å, c = 5.18 Å, Pmmn), this study reveals predominant (001)orth facets in Sn-10Bi-1Ag, and both (001)orth and more frequent (010)orth facets in Sn-57Bi-1Ag. Stability assessments of various crystal surfaces through first-principles calculations found the (010)orth surface to be most stable, followed by the (001)orth. Variations in stable facets between the two alloys may result from energy minimization influenced by atomic attachment at the liquid/solid interface, dynamic non-equilibrium solidification conditions, Bi concentration, and growth twinning. These findings enhance the understanding of intermetallic compound growth in solder alloys, with implications for solder joint technology improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. A risk model based on the tumor microenvironment to predict survival and immunotherapy efficacy for ovarian cancer.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Based on the interactions between immune components in the tumor microenvironment and ovarian cancer (OC) cells, immunotherapies have been demonstrated to be effective in dramatically increasing survival rates. This study aimed to identify landmark genes, develop a prognostic risk model, and explore its relevance to the efficacy of immunotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A risk model was built based on the immune-and stromal-related genes, which were extracted from the OC gene expression data of "The Cancer Genome Atlas" (TCGA) database. Survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were then conducted through the model's risk score pattern, which was established depending on the TCGA training cohort and verified based on the internal TCGA cohort and external "Gene Expression Omnibus" (GEO) datasets. Furthermore, the immune- related characteristics and prognostic values of the risk model were evaluated. RESULTS: The prognostic risk model for ovarian cancer demonstrated excellent performance in predicting survival rates, as validated in both the TCGA and GEO databases. The model showed significant associations with 17 functional immune cells, 17 immune checkpoints, PD-1, and several immune pathways, suggesting its potential to enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy in OC. CONCLUSIONS: The risk model developed in this study has the potential to serve as a prognostic marker for OC, enabling the development of personalized immunotherapy protocols and providing a theoretical basis for novel combinations of immunotherapeutic approaches. Abstract

Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) of forests is the net carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes between land and the atmosphere due to forests' biogeochemical processes. NEP varies with natural drivers such as precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, plant functional type (PFT), and soil texture , which affect the gross primary production and ecosystem respiration, and thus the net C sequestration. It is also known that deposition of sulphur and nitrogen influences NEP in forest ecosystems. These drivers' respective, unique effects on NEP, however, are often difficult to be individually identified by conventional bivariate analysis . Here we show that by analyzing 22 forest sites with 231 site-year data acquired from FLUXNET database across Europe for the years 2000–2014, the individual, unique effects of these drivers on annual forest CO2 fluxes can be disentangled using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) for nonlinear regression analysis. We show that S and N deposition have substantial impacts on NEP, where S deposition above 5 kg S ha−1 yr−1 can significantly reduce NEP, and N deposition around 22 kg N ha−1 yr−1 has the highest positive effect on NEP. 20. Direct patterning of periodic semiconductor nanostructures using single-pulse nanosecond laser interference

Abstract

We demonstrate an effective method for fabricating large area periodic two-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures by means of single-pulse laser interference. Utilizing a pulsed nanosecond laser with a wavelength of 355 nm, precisely ordered square arrays of nanoholes with a periodicity of 300 nm were successfully obtained on UV photoresist and also directly via a resist-free process onto semiconductor wafers. We show improved uniformity using a beam-shaping system consisting of cylindrical lenses with which we can demonstrate highly regular arrays over hundreds of square micrometers. We propose that our novel observation of direct pattern transfer to GaAs is due to local congruent evaporation and subsequent droplet etching of the surface. The results show that single-pulse interference can provide a rapid and highly efficient route for the realization of wide-area periodic nanostructures on semiconductors and potentially on other engineering materials.

Abstract

The effective manipulation of mode oscillation and competition is of fundamental importance for controlling light emission in semiconductor lasers. Here we develop a rate equation model which considers the spatially modulated gain and spontaneous emission, which are inherently governed by the ripple of the vacuum electromagnetic field in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) microcavity. By manipulating the interplay between the spatial oscillation of the vacuum field and external optical injection via dual-beam laser interference, single longitudinal mode operation is observed in a FP-type microcavity with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 40 dB. An exploration of this extended rate equation model bridges the gap between the classical model of multimode competition in semiconductor lasers and a quantum-optics understanding of radiative processes in microcavities.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CTEP) TaqIB gene polymorphism with lipid metabolism abnormalities and cerebral infarction (CI) in patients with atherosclerosis (AS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 100 AS patients complicated with (CI) as AS+CI group, and 200 AS patients with matched age, gender and race as controls (AS group). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs102313, rs118231 and rs201832 in the promoter region of CTEP TaqIB gene were classified by conformational differential gel electrophoresis. Then, Chi-square test was carried out to determine whether the distribution frequency of CTEP TaqIB genotypes conforms to the law of genetic equilibrium. In the meantime, the correlations of gene polymorphisms and allelotypes in the promoter region of CTEP TaqIB with CI and lipid metabolism abnormalities in AS patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Hardy-Weinberg genetic equilibrium analysis showed that the three polymorphisms of CTEP TaqIB gene were in accordance with the genetic equilibrium distribution (p>0.05). Moreover, the results of gene association analysis revealed that the polymorphisms rs102313 and rs118231 and allelotypes in the promoter region of CTEP TaqIB gene were correlated with CI in AS patients (p<0.05). Specifically, AS patients with GG genotype and allele G at rs102313 and those with TT genotype and allele T at rs118231 had a higher risk of CI (p<0.05). Besides, the polymorphism rs102313 in the promoter region of CTEP TaqIB gene was markedly related to lipid metabolism abnormalities in AS patients (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The polymorphisms rs102313 and rs118231 in the promoter region of CTEP TaqIB gene are associated with CI in AS patients, and the polymorphism rs102313 is remarkably correlated with lipid metabolism abnormalities in AS patients.
