28. Experimental process and kinetic behavior of carbothermal reduction of lithium cobaltate as a cathode for waste lithium batteries

Abstract

Lithium cobaltate as a cathode material has great recycling value in the recycling process of spent lithium-ion batteries, To promote the thermal reduction process of lithium cobaltate and recover high-value cobalt and lithium metals, we studied the process of lithium cobaltate reduction by carbon under different conditions and its thermal reaction kinetics. The effects of calcination temperature, raw material ratio, pelletizing pressure and holding time on the reduction rate of lithium cobaltate were investigated by controlling variables. The results showed that the optimum experimental conditions were as follows: mass ratio of carbon and lithium cobaltate was 1:1, pelletizing pressure was 45 MPa, calcination temperature was 800 °C, and calcination time was 6 h. Under these conditions, lithium cobaltate could be converted into cobalt and lithium carbonate, and the recovery rate of cobalt and lithium was 97% and 95%, respectively. A kinetic study on the carbothermal reduction reaction of LiCoO2 showed that the average activation energy of the carbothermal reaction of LiCoO2 under nitrogen protection was 280.6851 kJ/mol, and the mechanism model of the thermal decomposition reaction of LiCoO2 was controlled by chemicals, showing a deceleration curve. The corresponding process conforms to the threedimensional diffusion mechanism of the inverse Jander equation, which lays a theoretical foundation for the high-efficiency separation and recovery of LiCoO2 cathode material for waste lithium-ion batteries.

At the authors request, the Editor and Publisher of Drug Design, Development and Therapy wish to retract the published article. The authors informed the journal when attempting to scale up salvianolic acid microcapsule development, using the same process described in the article, they were unable to replicate the results previously reported. The previous study was based on small laboratory trials and preliminary analysis with no instability of the salvianolic acid B observed. However, during the process of scaling up the study the authors observed considerable instability of salvianolic acid B indicating the process design is unreliable and the findings reported previously are invalid. In addition, the authors were also unable to locate the raw data for their original study. The Editor agrees with the decision to retract the paper. Our decision-making was informed by our policy on publishing ethics and integrity and the COPE guidelines on retraction. This was prepared using the spray-drying method, with chitosan as the carrier. In the preparation process, the prescription and process were optimized by L9 (34) using an orthogonal design, with yield and drug loading as indexes, in order to obtain optimum conditions.Results: The optimal process and prescription for the preparation of salvianolic acid microcapsules were found to be as follows: mass concentration of chitosan, 1.5%; mass ratio of salvianolic acid to chitosan, 1:3; inlet air temperature, 190°C; and peristaltic pump speed, 300 mL·h-1. The surface of the microcapsules was round, the drug loading was 25.99% ± 2.14%, the yield was 51.88% ± 2.84%, the entrapment efficiency was 86.21% ± 2.89%, and the average particle size was 105.6 ± 2.56 nm. The microcapsules in vitro had certain sustained release characteristics. The internally fitted first-order release model equation was ln(1-Q) = − 0.236 t + 4.591 7, r = 0.920.
