Phonon resistance from dislocation scattering is often divided into short-range core interactions and long-range strain field interactions. Using electron energy-loss spectroscopy on a GaN dislocation, we report observations of vibrational modes localized at specific core atoms (short-range) and strain-driven phonon energy shifts around the dislocation (long-range). Ab initio calculations support these findings and draw out additional details. This study reveals atomically resolved vibrational spectra of dislocations, thus offering insights for engineering improved material functionalities.

Particle-like topologies, such as vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pairs, have garnered significant attention in the field of condensed matter. However, the detailed phase transition dynamics of V-AV pairs, as exemplified by self-annihilation, motion, and dissociation, have yet to be verified in real space due to the lack of suitable experimental techniques. Here, we employ polar V-AV pairs as a model system and track their transition pathways at atomic resolution with the aid of in situ (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and phase field simulations. We demonstrate the absence of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition between the room-temperature quasi-long-range ordered ground phase and the high-temperature disordered phase. Instead, we observe polarization suppression in bound V-AV pairs as the temperature increases. Furthermore, electric fields can promote the vortex and antivortex to approach each other and annihilate near the interface. The elucidated intermediate dynamic behaviors of polar V-AV pairs under thermal- and electrical-fields lay the foundation for their potential applications in electronic devices. In the search for high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides, a plethora of multi-hydrogen superconductors have been theoretically predicted, and some have been synthesized experimentally under ultrahigh pressures of several hundred GPa. However, the impracticality of these high-pressure methods has been a persistent issue. In response, we propose a new approach to achieve high-temperature superconductivity under atmospheric pressure by implanting hydrogen into lead to create a stable few-hydrogen metal-bonded perovskite, Pb$_4$H. This approach diverges from the popular design methodology of multi-hydrogen covalent high critical temperature ($T_c$) superconductors under ultrahigh pressure. By solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) equations, we demonstrate that perovskite Pb$_4$H is a typical phonon-mediated superconductor with a $T_c$ of 46 K, which is six times higher than that of bulk Pb (7.22 K) and higher than that of MgB$_2$ (39 K). The high $T_c$ can be attributed to the strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) strength of 2.45, which arises from hydrogen implantation in lead that induces several high-frequency optical phonon modes with a relatively large phonon linewidth resulting from H atom vibration. The metallic-bonding in perovskite Pb$_4$H not only improves the structural stability but also guarantees better ductility than the widely investigated multi-hydrogen, iron-based, and cuprate superconductors. Multi-hydrogen lanthanum hydrides have shown the highest critical temperature $T_c$ at 250-260 K under 170-200 GPa. However, such high pressure is a great challenge for sample preparation and practical application. To address this challenge, we propose a novel design strategy for ambient-pressure high-$T_c$ superconductors by constructing new few-hydrogen metal-bonded perovskite hydrides, such as Al-based superconductor $\rm {Al_4H}$, with better ductility than the well-known multi-hydrogen, cuprate and Fe-based superconductors. Based on the Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we predict that the structurally stable $\rm {Al_4H}$ has a favorable high $T_c$ up to 54 K under atmospheric pressure, similar to SmOFeAs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Low-rank approximation of images via singular value decomposition is well-received in the era of big data. However, singular value decomposition (SVD) is only for order-two data, i.e., matrices. It is necessary to flatten a higher order input into a matrix or break it into a series of order-two slices to tackle higher order data such as multispectral images and videos with the SVD. Higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) extends the SVD and can approximate higher order data using sums of a few rank-one components. We consider the problem of generalizing HOSVD over a finite dimensional commutative algebra. This algebra, referred to as a t-algebra, generalizes the field of complex numbers. The elements of the algebra, called t-scalars, are fix-sized arrays of complex numbers. One can generalize matrices and tensors over t-scalars and then extend many canonical matrix and tensor algorithms, including HOSVD, to obtain higher-performance versions. The generalization of HOSVD is called THOSVD. Its performance of approximating multi-way data can be further improved by an alternating algorithm. THOSVD also unifies a wide range of principal component analysis algorithms. To exploit the potential of generalized algorithms using t-scalars for approximating images, we use a pixel neighborhood strategy to convert each pixel to "deeper-order" t-scalar. Ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes (UVC-LEDs) have great application in pathogen inactivation under various kinds of situations, especially in the fight against the COVID-19. Unfortunately, its epitaxial wafers are so far limited to 2-inch size, which greatly increases the cost of massive production. In this work, we report the 4-inch crack-free high-power UVC-LED wafer. This achievement relies on a proposed strain-tailored strategy, where a three-dimensional to two-dimensional (3D-2D) transition layer is introduced during the homo-epitaxy of AlN on high temperature annealed (HTA)-AlN template, which successfully drives the original compressive strain into tensile one and thus solves the challenge of realizing high quality Al$_{0.6}$Ga$_{0.4}$N layer with a flat surface. This smooth Al$_{0.6}$Ga$_{0.4}$N layer is nearly pseudomorphically grown on the strain-tailored HTA-AlN template, leading to 4-inch UVC-LED wafers with outstanding performances. Our strategy succeeds in compromising the bottlenecked contradictory in producing large-sized UVC-LED wafer on pronounced crystalline AlN template: The compressive strain in HTA-AlN allows for crack-free 4-inch wafer, but at the same time leads to a deterioration of the AlGaN morphology and crystal quality. The launch of 4-inch wafers makes the chip fabrication process of UVC-LEDs matches the mature blue one, and will definitely speed up the universal of UVC-LED in daily life.

Microcavity exciton-polaritons are two-dimensional bosonic quasiparticles composed by excitons and photons. Using model Hamiltonian with parameters generated from ab initio density-functional theory and Bathe-Salpeter Equation calculations, we investigate the exciton and the exciton-polariton properties of hexagnonal boron nitride (hBN) based microcavity. We show that hBN based microcavities, including monolayer and all-dielectric ones, are promising in optoelectronic applications. Room temperature exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein Condensation can be achieved because of the large oscillating strength and binding energy of the exciton, and the strong interaction between the exciton-polaritons and the longitudinal optical phonons. Based on this BEC state, exciton-polariton mediated superconducting device can also be fabricated at such moderate temperatures using the microcavity structure proposed by Laussy et al., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is well known for its capability of dimension reduction and data compression. However, when using PCA for compressing/reconstructing images, images need to be recast to vectors. The vectorization of images makes some correlation constraints of neighboring pixels and spatial information lost. To deal with the drawbacks of the vectorizations adopted by PCA, we used small neighborhoods of each pixel to form compounded pixels and use a tensorial version of PCA, called TPCA (Tensorial Principal Component Analysis), to compress and reconstruct a compounded image of compounded pixels. Our experiments on public data show that TPCA compares favorably with PCA in compressing and reconstructing images. We report $ab$ $initio$ band diagram and optical absorption spectra of hexagonal boron nitride ($h$-BN), focusing on unravelling how the completeness of basis set for $GW$ calculations and how electron-phonon interactions (EPIs) impact on them. The completeness of basis set, an issue which was seldom discussed in previous optical spectra calculations of $h$-BN, is found crucial in providing converged quasiparticle band gaps. In the comparison among three different codes, we demonstrate that by including high-energy local orbitals in the all-electron linearized augmented plane waves based $GW$ calculations, the quasiparticle direct and fundamental indirect band gaps are widened by $\sim$0.2 eV, giving values of 6.81 eV and 6.25 eV respectively at the $GW_0$ level. EPIs, on the other hand, reduce them to 6.62 eV and 6.03 eV respectively at 0 K, and 6.60 eV and 5.98 eV respectively at 300 K. With clamped crystal structure, the first peak of the absorption spectrum is at 6.07 eV, originating from the direct exciton contributed by electron transitions around $K$ in the Brillouin zone. After including the EPIs-renormalized quasiparticles in the Bethe-Salpeter equation, the exciton-phonon coupling shifts the first peak to 5.83 eV at 300 K, lower than the experimental value of $\sim$6.00 eV. This accuracy is acceptable to an $ab$ $initio$ description of excited states with no fitting parameter.
